Rather Than The Son, I’ll Take The Father

I became a side-character who died in anguish because of her good-for-nothing husband.

If I can’t avoid getting married, why don’t I change who I marry instead?

“Excellent, marriage sounds good.”

“Wise choice. Then let’s have a wedding ceremony that isn’t too ceremonious. Following that, I’ll need you to go down to the Fief and behave like the lady of the house until I call for you. Naturally, there won’t be any time to spend in leisure whilst dousing yourself in luxuries.”

“I’m not marrying you, but your father instead.”

“……Pardon?”

“I’m not going to marry you. Do you have a problem with that?”

It's sort of funny how much of the previous reviewers praise this for "skipping the tedious parts."

The start of this story is fun. The concept is great. The execution is fine... until it isn't.

Positives

  • I know I'm not the only one who wishes more princekai stories came from this angle - MC is strong, confident, and eager to dole out retribution for sins of the past timeline. She's not interested in having a normal life, she's not easily taken advantage of, and she actively pursues her goals without shame. Good, great, go off queen, you love to see it
  • She 360 slamdunking on her abusive "ex" (not together in this timeline, obviously) left and right like she's on the Harlem Globetrotters team and it's pretty funny. Imagine Thor calling for his hammer, only to realize it was in a septic tank - that's the kind of tr*shing Gilbert gets throughout
  • I always like when authors take characters who were originally one dimensional jerks and give them a little more depth, which they did with MC's ex-love rival
  • If the author could let the story speak for itself, I think I would like the Duke a lot, he seems cool without being overly aloof to his surroundings
  • In the beginning, there's enough stuff going on that the flaws don't stand out. On reread, you'll realize they were always there
Negatives

  • I don't know if this book is based on another existing book, if it is? Good LORD, is the author mad about it. I see this kind of story sometimes and it makes me a bit sad I can't read Korean and verify for myself - so much of MC's narration is spent on taking jabs at the original book, complaining about how annoying the original book was, fuming over the original book choosing to take a certain path. It feels very... specific, like the author wrote this while angrily scrolling through the Other Author's Twitter.
  • I guess that isn't intrinsically an issue except the venting often comes at the expense of this author's story. I wanted to shake the author/MC by her shoulders and say "I am not reading the other story, I am reading yours. I am taking time out of my day because I am interested in the story YOU are telling. I don't care what the other guy wrote, stop telling me about it! This is world is yours now and we all want to see what YOU do with it, not them!"
  • As the story slows down to focus on the relationship between MC and the Duke, there's not enough action to distract you from how much MC does this
  • This officially went to dropped territory with the most recent chapter and it looks like the translator agrees - the Duke is about to reveal a big secret that will change everything, probably. The chapter starts with the implication that we are able to learn something huge! What's the relevation?
I dunno.

Seriously, I don't. MC grumbles that she never learned the secret because she only cared about seeing a Gilbert punished in the original novel. She insists that she and the other readers thought the original novel was simple. Then she just straight up gives a multi paragraph exposition of major plot points of the original novel for 33 PARAGRAPHS. I think I might be off a bit because I started to lose it once I hit 20. Thirty. Three. Paragraphs. Dedicated to explaining the plot of a different book, including plot points you are already aware don't matter anymore.

After 33 paragraphs, she pauses. Takes a moment to express regret over not reading the end, because she doesn't know what the twist is.

And then she's right back to summarizing the original novel's plot. Oh my god.

Eventually she meanders back to reality, where the Duke can finally talk about the secret and we can get back to the fun. Oh wait, never mind, the Duke is playing 20 questions rather than just stating wtf the secret is. Spoilers???
Spoiler

Gilbert wasn't abandoned by his parents?

[collapse]
is that it??? Is that why you made me read the plot summary of a different book? Like this is clearly missing another half to make it relevant, but why was it necessary to withhold whatever the rest of the info is? All of that buildup for nothing interesting.

This book should have been entertaining. It should have been a breath of fresh air. Instead it gradually becomes a tedious exercise in frustration. I wish this story could have been about itself and not about what the original story wasn't. <<less

Spoiler

The FL gets reincarnated in a novel she once read as the daughter of the Marquis Morgana, a woman who gets pressured into marriage without love and who'll get abandoned by her husband after he cheated on her with her maid. To change her fate the FL had changed the position of her family compared to the book, but this has already happened where the book starts, so we can skip to the interesting part:

There is a magic contract between two families, a powerful grand dukedom Kallakis and family of marquis Morgana, that their descendants have to marry one day. That's what the adoptive son of the grand Duke wants to use to pressure the FM into marriage without love, because if not fulfilled the contract will have serious consequences.

But the FM knows that would happen if she were to marry the adoptive son, so she demands to marry not him, but his bachelor of a father. The adoptive son, doesn't cooperate and acts very foolishly, which caught the attention if the grand duke, who lived isolated from novel society.

At the end of chapter 4 the grand duke decides to go to the Capital, where the FL waits for her future husband

[collapse]

Since the novel skips the uninteresting part of the "reincarnated into a novel"-route, where they prepare for the story of the book to begin, it starts of at a really interesting point. I believe this novel will skip all the stuff many people find boring in these stories (research, building prestige and wealth...), so it's a good read!

And the translations are really smooth! Please give this novel a chance! <<less

I don't know how I feel about this. Her former husband has -200 IQ. Plus the father is just erratic. The plot is like "oh, I'll accompany you because you interest me." How exactly? I think this story could have been promising, but it's just banking on low IQ characters and an indifferent ML with the cliché "you interest me" line. It makes no sense how the ML who is described as a man who wants nothing to do with society basically or is just lazy to partake in any... more>> work suddenly dances with the FL on their first meeting. Am I asking for too much at least for the first few chapters?! <<less

Don't let the reviews mislead you. Don't bother reading the novel. If you have the time to read this novel, might as kill the rats at home, to pass the time.

Its a sh*t novel. Too dry. There's nothing in it. All characters seem one dimensional. FL is too arrogant, crude, more like a country bumpkin. She acts like the sun rises only for her. Every time she opens her mouth she bullshits. Like f*ck! What the hell is happening here? Nothing is explained in detail.

Everyone acts like the world owes... more>> them everything. They are too smug. This is sh*t novel.

I don't know if the author wrote it like this or Translator is sh*t at translating.

Don't waste time reading this. Lost my temper in the middle of the night after reading this. <<less

I love how the author managed to give bits of background from time to time, unlike the usual chunk of I-transmigated-to-a-novel narration of the MC. Looking forward for this couple!

The title baited me.

I was expecting that the son was the typical 2nd ML sweetheart whom the MC would throw away for the ML because she has a thing for DADDYs responsible, mature guys, but instead, all I got was a villain of a son who was rid of early in the story and an ML who's as interesting as a pebble on the road. There's no good rivalry between father and son, and they're not worth mentioning in the title at all.

As for the MC, she tends to act... more>> like the world is beneath her feet. Her character is supposed to be "scheming" as someone who knows the plot of the novel, but several chapters in, and she has yet to make any smart moves. Good things just fall on her lap without her lifting a finger. It's also pitiable to read the author's attempts to show her good sense of humor. Really.

As for the romance, it feels forced. The MC dominates the relationship, and while that is something I usually like with female MCs, this one is like a mix of a master and servant + marionette and marionette's relationship. The ML has no opinion of his own and just exists to do whatever the MC wants. Instead of appearing as sweet, it comes off as strange. It was never explained, or at least hinted, why a demon lord like him who's been around for hundreds of years is wrapped around the MC's finger. The MC has no affection for the ML either. He treats the ML like a social experiment or a servant most of the time.

For me, the biggest turn-off is the narration. It's all over the place and keeps jumping around. You can't get immersed in the story because half the time, you're confused about what's happening. At first, I thought it was due to the translation quality, but the other reviewers don't seem to think so. It must be the writing then. Honestly, there were times where only 5-7 sentences made sense in an entire chapter. It's that bad.

I don't know how I reached chapter 50 before yeeting myself out of this misery. I guess I was hoping it'd get better, but it was all in vain. There was nothing to look forward to, to be curious about, or to be excited about in reading this series. So save yourself the agony and go look for something else to read. It's not worth your time. <<less

How to know you're reading a bad review and avoid writing one yourself 101. (Nothing to do with the story complaining about other reviewers mostly)

Spoiler

-If the reviewer focuses on the characters instead of the ACTUAL STORY and don't mention anything else

This is called "personal bias" when someone can't enjoy something because what happens in the story is against personal principles or whatever... the reviewer is unable to put distance between the characters and themselves, they find fault on everything the character does because they would never act that way... without taking into account that THEY ARE NOT THE CHARACTERS IN THE STORY.

-If the reviewer haves only complaints and can't elaborate on "why" something is bad without spoiling the work.

Taste is SUBJECTIVE, what he disliked might be what you enjoy as a reader all you can really hope for is to be presented with a well constructed story with appropriate set up and plot devices and even if clichés are used, for everything to be done competently to tell a story... EVERY SINGLE STORY HAVES ALREADY BEING TOLD. there are NO completely original stories, no completely original works, there are "world builders" that write beautiful worlds, there are "personificators" that write compelling characters, there are "mystery weavers" that create an intricate set up of plot devices that keep you on your toes, there are AWESOME WRITERS that manage all that in the same book!, but probably not in a web novel or a light novel... in this category are your Tolkiens or Rowlings or Doyles or Dickens.

-If the reviewer goes straight to the PLOT of the story.

You really want to "know" what happens before reading the story?? I don't think so... spoiling things is... quite simply bad form, and a disservice to the person reading your review, please try to avoid this at all cost, EVEN if it is used to praise the story... I came here to know if there is something I might not endure, not to read a resume of what happens in the story.

There are places to read spoilers in the forums, go there, do that there, don't come into the review section and WAM! hit us with the "I can't believe Darth Vader was Luke's father!" too dated? "I can't believe Snape killed Dumbledore!"... don't ruin the fun for everyone.

[collapse]

Anyway.

Once again I am in awe at the capabilities of Korean authors, this story is filled with charisma and charm thanks to the world building and the characterizations.

The characters are well portrayed and have their particular personalities well explained, it's written with a lot of subtleties that hint at a lot of different subtext that don't really spell out what their importance is, but since we're still early into the story, and I am familiar with Korean works, I am exited to know how things begin to resolve later.

I would compare this story to "Lucia"... but the MC isn't as meek as her.

The whole plot devices are... FUN, because the MC isn't your super "pure, humble, meek" woman, she haves a very strong character, and is interested in being affluent and powerful, which is a nice break of the mold from the normal MCs on this stories.

The pacing is inconsistent, but I didn't find it that bad, except for a few clunky chapters that got bogged down by exposition dump because the author really wanted to push the plot forward... It felt like he was as anxious to move ahead I can almost hear him yelling at the characters "get on with it!", but TBF it got the whole set up of what he really wanted to write about in a single chapter, and then the real story seems to be coming to fruition.

So far there have being almost no misunderstandings, except a few for comedic effect that weren't done to create tension or conflict and were resolved without a second thought.

I really like how the MC is actually TRYING to do things to avoid what happened in the original work to happen, she's definitely pro active, instead of your cliché character that just tries to hide or avoid the main characters, she went head on to become her own power.

If anything the quirkiness of each character is great, the plot devices are still being set up and definitely interesting on their own regard, the original story? well... let's just say that the author didn't really want to write that and shoved it aside at the first opportunity... she still retains some memories that might come handy later but the author has made it quite clear that he's DONE with that whole thing and wants to write its own thing.

THIS STORY ISN'T ABOUT YOUR DAMSEL IN DISTRESS, SHE'S EGOTISTICAL, OBNOXIOUS AT TIMES, SELFISH, SELF SERVING, ARROGANT, THE EXACT OPOSITE OF WHAT THE MC'S OF THIS KIND OF STORIES ARE, THAT'S THE WHOLE POINT.

If you can't endure characters like this, go read Lucia, I for one am enjoying this story very much, the humor is very much to my taste, and in particular, I'm thrilled by the interactions between her and the ML of the original work because... well, you need to read it, let's just say this novel haves "child elements" in it, and even with all her character traits she "tries" because she "knows"... and it's hilarious... <<less

I rarely review any books but I couldn't ignore this, cause I stayed up all night to read some shit. I wanted to give one star but accidentally gave two stars.

Piece of advice don't bother yourself with this book and waste your time and braincells.

Honestly I couldn't find head and tail in this book. It's plain s*upid. Lot of basic information was missing or should I say poor narration of background and character. It straight up jumped into marriage contract. It never explained how or when MC came into the... more>> novel world (at least till chapter 30). Why MC's ancestors made a marriage contract? What is the relationship between them or at least when was it established? Since this is European setting I expected some powerful or cunning royal family but I can't even describe them as paper tiger, that much insignificant they were. I understand ML is powerful but it seemed little too much. But at times he was cute.

As for the MC, please don't even get me started. She might be powerful and badass but she's outright childish and s*upid.
Spoiler

Her actions seemed questionable almost all the time. Why did she go horse riding even knowing Gilbert might do something? Why did she pour wine on him in imperial ball? Why did she give ginger dishes to Gilbert? (Although it might be revenge it was really petty.) Why did she drink beast blood just to punch kallen once? Why did she dress up as a maid when already everything was set for her? She treated those good knights as plaything.

[collapse]

And just how ML easily accepted her as wife and adored her without any settings was beyond me. Like com'on he's supposed to be some extremely bored grand Duke who thought even leaving his room tiresome, but he just accepts her and moved around her without any reasoning or explanation.

There's no plot except occasionally questioning why ML adopted Gilbert and Regen or his backstory? Nothing else. <<less

I had so much fun reading this! No tedious introductions, you just jump right into the action. The FL is awesome, self-assured and has obviously been hard at work. You get the gist of her past deeds and shenanigans from conversation, gossip and some short flashbacks, but there's no tedious superfluous details to them, they are just there to highlight her resolve and her character and relations. It's awesome and reads so easily and it becomes obvious throughout the first few chapters that she apparently transmigrated.

Her coy behaviour around the... more>> familiar is her introducing herself to the Grand Duke and the ML and she knows it. He knows it, too. It's subtle and implied and never outright stated and THAT is probably what I love about the novel. It doesn't assume that the readers are completely ret*rded like a lot of the over explaining Korean Novels tend to do. The first time the OTP are meeting face to face, he tells her to bring it on, he's willing to negotiate. And also, he's not willing to completely loose face by allowing the asswipe wannabe villain to represent his family. Promise to the original hero or not. And she delivers. I love it.

I really hope this keeps up with the rest of the novel! (I keep hoping that she will call him "Daddy" at some point and wiggle her eyebrows. But that's just me. Probably.)

Another plus point worth mentioning: the translator is doing an outstanding job, it's very fluent and natural and eloquent and doesn't read forced or stilted. Thank you for the effort! <<less

I'm pretty disappointed, the premise was eye grabbing (oh you're going for the scumbag's dad???? Uhh yes please) but it lost its appeal quickly with Eve breezing through her wins. There's no real struggle, and seeing her triumph over her shitty marriage candidate and netting his aloof daddy by being "iNtErEsTiNg" doesn't exactly hold my attention beyond 4 chapters. It just tells me that there isn't going to be any real conflict, especially since she doesn't care about literally anyone besides herself (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long... more>> as it's paired with actual genuine conflict).

That being said, if that kind of power fantasy is what you're after then you'll love this. It's very well written/translated and the characters are all beautiful and charismatic. Give it a read if that appeals to you! <<less

I am dropping this at chapter 20.

The premise is nice. The set up with fantasy/magic contract and immortal (?) ML sounds good. I also enjoyed the strong and cool FL.

What makes me drop it is the narration of the story. It feels more like a draft of an actual novel rather than the novel itself. Character introduction is random (suddenly some new name just pops up), the story shifts fast and one has to think what happened since the last sentence (like guessing game).

If it ever gets a remake, I... more>> will read it.

The translation is very solid, shame the author didn't work a bit more on the novel. <<less

I’ve been on a massive princikai binge lately. Manhaw, manga, novels. And this is the one I’m most excited about getting the next chapter.
I like my FLs badass and capable, and my MLs capable, appropriately appreciative of their good luck, and happy to lend a hand or sword should things get too dicy. Extra points if either roll is shockingly clever or slightly unhinged or both. Do not psychoanalyze me.
This book tics all those boxes this far (ch 18) and the translation is well done and entertaining.
FL... more>> is active, decisive, and funny. And quite clever. ML is interesting, powerful, nuts in a way that is not a threat to the heroine, and very entertained by the FL.
Over all I’m very much enjoying it! <<less

So far I'm loving this story. The MC is intelligent and funny. It's too soon to tell on the ML, but he doesn't seem to be the generic cold type that the novel in the story portrays him as.

As others have said, they didn't really do any background info, but that's honestly a relief for someone who hates reading through a big chunk of stuff at the start. It's not really confirmed until several chapters in, but she was born as this character, rather than being dropped in midway. So... more>> at least it makes sense that she's very prepared and capable. <<less

This novel. I really, really, REALLY like it.

MC is badass af, a truly elegant flower of evil. And I admit that after reading all those KR novels with so many generous descriptions of the dads. Well, I might or might have not developed some ahjussi issues.

MC and ML, I... It's like that marvelous OTP villain ship that I have always dreamed of.

I dont quite understand why the novel has such high reviews. After chapter 25, I just feel like the novel has completely lost its sense of direction and the fl's actions make absolutely no sense to me. Maybe that's just a problem with me, but there are so many other options she could've chosen, she chose the most absurd options that I could even think of. The MC was likeable at first, but there are times where I just can't understand her.
