It is a high level novel, one of the best among translating novels. If you like xianxia genre stories you will like this one too. It has good action, interesting cultivation, characters aside from main lead have their own personalities and their own interesting history. MC's personality is likable and he is quit smart. I definitely enjoy reading this, when I first started reading I read all translated chapters in one go.

Rather poor. My biggest problem with this story is it’s inconsistency in everything, from personalities, to world geography, to characters actions and/or way of thinking. Everything can (and dose) change chapter to chapter depending on the need of the author to tell a particular “story act”.

If you can ignore the plot armor and the large inconsistencies in the story then you can enjoy this story, it’s different enough from the rest to be a nice read.

A refreshing adaptation, deviating from the strict norms of the xianxia genre, yet still within its boundaries. A novel filled with military strategy and political intrigue, retaining moments of light-heartedness and gripping fights.

Totally worth of the 5/5 rating

Great story!

Although it has the same elements with other cliche xuanhuan/xianxia novel with the same genre, this novel choose the different path, The Mortal path. Unlike the other xuanhuan/xianxia whose MC was totally immersed with cultivating and finding treasure, this xuanhuan choose to enter mortal matters such as politics and such while strengthening his self for the sake of Master filiality and Love! And the MC excel at it!! And he was only 13!.

The author tends to take time in world building which is totally... more>> worth it because you can clearly see the beauty of the world just by the simple imagination. He also put effort to character interaction and side character development which is also a unique charm of this novel. I just hope to see more character Opness and action I truly thirst to see that in this novel.

Qi Xiaoyu falls in love with MC for absolutely no reason whatsoever. She literally just meets him in the forest and immediately starts helping him. I don't know why she did that, maybe she has a reason that might be revealed later, but the love relationship feels really forced and unnatural and actually a bit creepy. If I was the MC I would be creeped out if some random stranger popped out of the forest and stalked me for months on end for absolutely no reason. The harem also forms... more>> unnaturally as well. The princess only met him for a few days and fell in love with him already? Doesn't make much sense.

As another reviewer said the characters act inconsistently from one chapter to the next. One time he has to escape a band of robbers to save his life and the next scene he is killing a group of elite hors**en all by himself.

I forgot why I was reading this. There's nothing really interesting going on. His master is still going to live for another 7 years, so there's plenty of time to find a cure. He doesn't have a reason to infiltrate the grasslands. He doesn't actually have a reason to do anything. Things just happen to him. One day he's just travelling and he encounters a princess being chased by some bandits so he just decides to meddle in their internal affairs because... he's really patriotic so he's helping his country by doing so. Right. But really what's he getting out of all this? He just interfered in other people's business for no real reason. And after he saves the princess he just walks away. Completely pointless. <<less

This story had such a promising start. Then he goes into politics for no apparent reason and it becomes boring... and it transitions in the most random manner. Ugh. It had so much potential!

It has been mentioned that the MC gets some plot armor, but I do not understand. It is more like a chance encounter with a pretty cool master, and the MC had to train to get stronger, and he is still not close to being OP. There is another world (s) been mentioned, which is intriguing to the future plot of the story.

Initial impressions after Ch.35.

Expected to find something common, found a potential rough gem instead. The early chapters read almost like a satire of other xianxia novels. The good in reputation aren’t good, the bad in name aren’t all too bad. The master-disciple relationship is not what you expect from other novels. Instead of reading about painstaking training and learning, you will read about the MC being kicked off the mountain very quickly after memorizing some vague thing or another. The MC has all these preconceptions about cultivation that a xianxia... more>> reader would have, and the author uses the MC’s grumbling to voice out the differences in a humorous manner. The bit where the master didn’t even tell him the individual names of the moves that the disciple had learned is a plus.

It isn’t a straightforward “power up, offend people, kill people, offend clans, destroy clans” type of novel. Yes, there is spatial space involved, a mysterious voice that offers short factual insights once in a while; and a secret, incomplete yet incomparable skill bestowed by his master.

It reminds me of the classic novel The Legend of the Condor Heroes, where the jianghu (martial underworld) permeates but is still separate from the secular, ‘normal’ world. The MC after much detour from what was a dream of a straightforward path of cultivation, is immediately thrown into the infighting politics of a grasslands people in the second arc; almost like how a young Guo Jing in Condor Heroes got involved with the Mongols even though he was an outsider.

The MC’s characterization can swing wildly. On one hand he seems naive, yet he was raised by his military grandfather to be independent and tactful. On the other hand he displays cunning, taking calculated risks and yet still can be quite inexperienced due to his youth. There is some disparity between the introduction and the later chapters, it seems the author hadn't fully decided on the MC's background and a reader might be forgiven to think it's a story of two different people: a down-trodden kid at the start and suddenly a prodigy trouble-maker later on. We were not fully told the reasons of his bad fortunes during the start of the story and one might feel sorry for the kid, only to be told that in the later arcs that his bad luck was actually because of him being a smart-aleck and offending the wrong people due to his own self confidence. The translation can be quite rough and it might take someone a few reads to get who is saying what at times, but it is still very readable and to-the-point. Dialogue is standard and functional, don’t expect the quality of Ze Tian Ji but it works well enough to get the story moving. The prose improves later on after the grasslands act.

If a reader perseveres he or she might find a novel that is different from the other novels that dominate this site. I know I will read on. <<less

Just casually started reading it... waiting for new translated chapters from my other novels. Who would have known that I would stumble upon something so interesting?! Now, I have to say before my review that this is not one of the best xianxia novels I have read. However, it is still better than most.

Firstly, this novel does not bring anything new to the table at all. There is no innovative story telling here. Its the same old sh*t where MC is trying to find his parents and he stumbles... more>> upon a mysterious powerful expert master from higher planes (MC is in mortal plane). And so the story starts. So.... yeah ain't nothin new here. However, in every sense even though story is only average along with average characters it is still interesting to read.

One of the most interesting aspects of the story is about concept of secular world (monarchies/countries) vs sects and how the people of sects usually look down on secular nations even though they depend on these nations for resources (f*ckers think they are immortals). And there is always this tension between kingdoms and sects and their interdependence on each other. This is an interesting aspect which has never been viewed in other novels. Additionally, at least for the first 60-70 chapters the MC is really adorable and naive. Then, his personality changes as he experiences the dark side of the cultivation world and realizing that the sects are not as high and almighty as he thought them to be and the secular nations are not as weak as he thought them to be. All in all the development of MC (while sometimes too abrupt) is still logical and there are some likable side characters which keep the things fresh. There are a lot of things going on in the background in the story such as internal political struggle in the empire, spies of the foreign nations and their struggles, pressure of the sects on the royalties and nations and that constant friction between sects and nations. Keeps things fresh and decently fast paced.

All in all, I would recommend this novel for casual readers who are not looking for something too serious. The LN is not excellent in any ways but is above average in all aspects (at least as compared to some of the pure crap like Martial god asura, Against the gods (ikr, but I have read raws, believe it sucks later on) and so on).... <<less

Its not a bad novel, interesting master and MC pair, dudes a genius like all the others but the demon lord guy is kinda cool. Raw readers I warn you novel is kinda long 700000 chapters and still ongoing, thats a little bit longer than CD but not as long the oxford dictionary so its pretty hefty.

Typical mortal-spirit-immortal-heaven-above world buldling.

Almost all of MC's ability is plot armor.

He's supposed to have learned that letting enemies survive will lead to people close to you suffering later.

... more>> Somewhere in the middle of the plot some of his close people are about to get mu*dered and he gets assaulted as well. He overpowers the attackers. The boss of the attackers yells "I give up" and MC lets him go..... what?

you. have. got. to. be. kidding. me.

Situations similar to this are happening more and more frequent towards the middle, but this is a new low of insanity. This is filth written by such <<less

The beginning is typical xianxia. Humilation/op master/cheat item. But as story progress it becomes more. Politician fighting/economy come into play. The MC does not shout strength is everything every second sentence. It is not maybe the very best but it mostly manages to avoid dry xianxia. (Train/fight/run)

Overally good read once you read flagships like world of cultivation. (Yes I got paid jingshi to say it!)

The xianxia genre managed to break free from most cliches in recent years by using different types of cultivation systems or giving the protagonist a better plot background. This way the sensation of deja vu seemingly disappeared, This novel is one of these new xianxia where the protagonist is not just a cultivation machine that progresses at a speed faster than light. He has the qualifying characteristics of an OP protagonist but not because of some insta kill artifact.

Of course, it's not like all is good and green. The... more>> protagonist luck is quite extreme at the beginning as he obtains something unique with way too much ease. But, thankfully, that is not repeated, at least for how much I have read.

I can say that this novel is truly a good read for everyone, a smart protagonist, decent women around him that don't have wet panties all the time, an interesting master and good friends. If you want to give it a try, you won't regret it... At least until the translation moved to another site. The format of the site and its white background hurts my eyes a lot. <<less

Reviewed at 81, rated 4.

mu*dering Heaven Edge tells the story of a boy with unknown origin who had to run from his city because he stepped on a prince’s foot (not literally, of course). He took arduous journey to a certain sect with hopes to cultivate there, but unexpected turns of events happened and led him to a different, albeit better, path where he met strong characters and stuffs that later changed his life.

As you can perceive from that short intro, the plot armor is a bit thick in this... more>> one (although definitely not the thickest). There were some interesting characters, but they were somehow overshadowed by the MC’s armor. On the development side, till the latest chapter, the world’s construct was being told incrementally, so we probably have to put more patience before gaining the full picture. However, the MC’s character development so far is pretty good; we can see how he changed from a naive boy into an astute and resourceful teenager. And the plot contains unexpected turns and twist that although we don’t get the connection yet, but I believe is part of a bigger plot. It’s not simply a weak-to-strong story, as the MC receives much loyalty from the people around him and doesn’t easily kill people (prefers to make good use of them, actually). I’ve got quite high hopes on this one. <<less

The Writing is amazing! You have to read this. It will make you cry, laugh and even feel heartwarming. The way the story is constructed is certainly better then most CNs I've read on NU. Really well thought. I love the Character development and Character interactions. They feel well fleshed out. But please keep in mind. This is more Drama and less Cultivating!

I also don't like how the Author isn't clear with the Readers. He makes us wait several more chapters for more Info. He never shows but just tells.... more>> He keeps coming up with these explosive random developments!
Spoiler

Like wtf? You say build a organization, but you don't really do crap but in the next few chapter its already build up? Sure he does something like recruit strong people but that's about it. There is no "Kingdom Building" nor does he show how its made. The Organizations are just there like Air.

[collapse]
I hate that Author bad habit. Just say the things you need to say all at once instead of making us wait... I've read many CNs but this is truly different. I've never seen a Cultivator interfere so much in Normal Human matters. Its weird. MC has morals and has a heroic spirit. We see him grow from a Child to an Adult.

As for the Romance! Its a Harem but whether its Polygamy, I don't know! But as I see it so far. The MC is completely loyal to his love interest and only sees one girl! Sure the Romance was a bit force and sloppy in the beginning but it genuinely becomes something good! I just don't like how the Romance was too fast! <<less

Tipical xianxia, I thought that it was different at first to be disapointed later. Villans are one-dimensional carbon copies of the other villans and our MC finds the "love of his life" in about 30 chapters. There are a lot of girls with more developement and more personality but because that one was the first it gets to be the main one. Also I dont know why the author prefers to power up every female to later be useless for example :

Spoiler

Evey girl friend of the MC is powered up before going to the spirit realm with a venerable inheritance one of those girls gets a sword that has sentinence and all. But what do they do? They make enemies because everyone wants to f*ck them. To later be saved by our mc

[collapse]

There's also the "heroicness" of the MC who wants to save everyone unrelated to him because ???? I understand being good an all but he's always meddling in others people bussiness because he wants to prove how good he is <<less

After finishing this title, I can say that out of all the titles I've read "Chu Mo" is by far my favorite MC. He's smart, calm and not bloodthirsty. He kills when needed and refrains when not. This is what I want in a MC and not those arrogant pricks that will exterminate a clan and their nine generations just because they annoyed him.

The romance is nice and his leading lady has a great personality. At the end of the story, he only had two wives albeit he has a... more>> lot of *ahem* ladies that is not courageous enough to pin him down and have their way with him.

The pacing is good after you get pass the first 50 chapters. It just keeps on getting better. When you've reached the turning point at around chapter 900+ (After he rescues his leading lady). It would be better to take a day or two to rest. Continue afterwards and you will feel that the story is like a "brand new story" to you.

Overall I liked how it all wrapped up. Kudos to the author for doing a great job. Definitely one of my highly recommended titles here in Novelupdates. <<less

The cultivation realm naming in this novel for me is probably the only thing that irks me. Not that it doesn't make sense, it's that the concept behind the names try too hard to be original.

I'd prefer it just the realm and the stage plus an explanation of details of what they relate to. I seriously didn't need to know that your power level was equal to killing a thousand people aka a terrorist.

Moving on, the MC 's jade stone is most likely a spatial item that acts as a... more>> multipurpose cheat device. Raising plants, becomes a human-pokedex, automatic alchemy machine, translation and deciphering stone. Haven't learned much of indestructible sword though.

OP sword + Multipurpose cheat jade + #1 cultivation method.
Sounds a bit cliche and overused, but the redeeming quality is that cultivation speed isn't god-tier. Fast due to the method but reasonable if we all listen to the demon lord. There is training, there is hardships there is sweat and tears of a 14 year old killing old monsters.

So far in the novel, the MC is dedicated to only one girl and pretty much sets her as the target for driving the plot.
Probably the reason I first started reading this was because of a no-harem tag...

Spoiler

But that all changed when the fire nation attacked.

[collapse]

Other girls have begun to show affection, the maid and a random girl he saved even though he seems to be still focused on the missing chick, he disdains looking at the princess and rejected her cold and thoroughly.
So whoever put the harem tag, chances are it's going to be a harem... sigh... but I pray not.

I found that I ended up hating literally all the political characters in the novel, especially the emperor.

But yeah, you should all read this just for the sake of the demon lord's advice in life. <<less

Fine to kill time, but nowhere near novels like ATG, ISSTH or BTTH, the reason being, in my opinion, the lack of profundity when explaining xianxia concepts and the simplicity of the plot coupled with no real sense of danger for the MC, like a constant plot armor.
