GOD reading this novel is so. Worth. IT!!

Honestly I kind of wish it was longer, but the pacing was so well done that I don't mind too much. This novel actually has realistic writing about LGBT, child-raising, learned helplessness, obsessive compulsive behaviors, etc. Most amazingly, neither MC and ML are in denial about their sexuality!! The ML even talks about sexuality being a spectrum, and there are some side characters who are also LGBT or allies. I've gotten so used to the "I'm straight but you're okay" bullsh*t that this... more>> was like a rare imperial delicacy...

The smut was pretty awesome, too. Read for voice-con, phone s*x, daddy kink, and wholesome s*x. The big scene where MC loses his v-card to the ML is delicious, even in MTL form. The build-up was super hot, too. I could not recommend this enough.

Finally, the emotional pay-off for this novel makes this even more of a must-read. Both the MC and ML, and even the baby boy have great character development, and its easy to appreciate the ways that they make each other better and happier. This novel may not make you cry, but your heart will WRENCH. From the summary and the first few chapters, you may not expect how serious and psychological this story can get. The healing process for each character is touching. <<less

I haven't finish reading this, but I can't wait to write some review on this amazing gem.

How amazing this is? This novel is my starting point of read by MTL-ing (I hate MTL the most, but this novel makes me want to finish it soon). And even with MTL, they managed to make me cry.

Character

  • I really don't expect MC to be written that way. Beneath that Pastel Colours, hid some realistic tragedy. And (like other reviewer point out) he's really positive. His self-loathing is kinda 'refreshing'. In the middle of the overconfident, OP MC, he's really feels grounded. I can feel connected to him at some point, and that makes me appreciate this novel more.
  • ML is the one that really bring MC self-confidence. His view on many thing really mature, and that's how you write a mature character! He's not without flaw (he'll be boring if that happens). At first, I really want to punch him hard. How dare he hurt our lovely MC that way! But...
    Spoiler

his relationship reveal is really sweet. Sugary sweet. I really can't punch him if he's that sweet. And that video conference thing makes me cry happily.

    [collapse]
  • MC's child. The reason why he's exist really surprised me, in a good way. He's really mature FOR HIS AGE. The author doesn't exaggerate how mature he is. Sometimes for BL (or straight) novel with child at the center of the story, the author makes them do everything that impossible for their supposed age. And that's always bummed me.
    Spoiler

I love how the author write about his loneliness. With a pure and heavy atmosphere. And I love how MC told ML that the only place where the children always obedient is the orphanage. It's really brilliant how the author using Bubu to tell us the story of young Song Ran. He's there for plot and characterization. Not just for 'awww' moment.

    [collapse]
  • The cat and the little robot. Wish my cat that cute. The author really using them, not just for emphasize how great the ML, how cute the MC.
Psychological and LGBT Issue

  • The author handle many of it awesomely. It looks like they do some research.
  • The trauma is realistic. I've seen that kind of trauma in real life. And the onset really well written. It serve as a heartwrenching moment, character development, and plot. It's rare for Chinese author to handle this issue that delicately. They don't exaggerate it, and serve that as a pitiful point for MC. While all the issue makes the MC more 'pitiful', but it the author write it as something that makes him him.
  • I really appreciate how ML handle that issue. He acknowledge it, and using everything in his power to make MC better. He did what he did not only because he has the power, but because he's genuinely love MC and wants to flaunt him to the world. Not using MC to flexing all of his power and wealth.
  • I kinda wish MC's issues not really go away after that one moment with ML. Or that part written a bit more. While it's still awesome, how unrealistic 'the therapy' really throws me out of loop.
  • One of the best LGBT chinese novel. I kinda wish they make this into c-drama. The side character really awesome too. While almost all the pair here gay or lesbian, the author write it realistically.
    Spoiler

Such as the desire to have children, and how far Bubu's mother goes for it.

    [collapse]
They're not just for author's perversion.
Relationship and Sex

  • The s*x is delicious. And with a lot of feelings. And with a lot of uwu.
  • While the relationship actually a bit too quick, the author wrote it in the way it doesn't feel that way. They using hours and days to tell the story, it's a clever way to use chapter to cut one long day.
  • It's natural. Love how ML as the mature one handle the relationship and guide MC through the labyrinth of it.
  • There's no unnecessary drama. There's no unnecessary misunderstanding. There's no unnecessary third wheel.
    Spoiler

Bubu's mother, the third wheel material, surprisingly lesbian.

    [collapse]
This novel is really a hidden gem.

While I haven't finish it yet, this novel managed to make me give it 5 stars. There's a bit of question and potential plothole. But, maybe I'll complain about it after I finish this novel.

It's good, then it's not.

The writer made a good back story, a great build up, and then *boom* what an unsatisfying dumbfounding wrap.

Romance. It's become shallow and kinda 'forced' by writer.

Spoiler

I mean, it would be best if it's happen later when they're already met each other, instead of confirming relationship by phone, and ML actually can said that he's serious and they're to be forever. I mean, it's only 10 days after they know each other and it's only by phone calls.

[collapse]

Past trauma. Oh my god, I hate this one so much.

Spoiler

No one should do what ML did to MC regarding MC's trauma. I'm so uncomfortable with it. How could the writer decide to write something like that. Oh god.

[collapse]

Bubu's mom. Hahahhaa, what a dramatic bulshiet. I would prefer if ML is divorcee or something more make sense

Spoiler

Bubu's mom is lesbian who wants to have baby by tricking ML and have his sperm from cond*m. And wow, the mom's lesbian partner also pregnant at the same time! I'm so done.

Feeling kind of conflicted between 3 or 4 stars, but in the end decided to round down. I really really liked the novel in the first half and thought it was so cute, but not gonna lie in the second half it started feeling a little like a bad fanfic.

Spoiler

I started getting these vibes after they got together, and I really tried to overlook them because I really liked the premise of the novel. But (1) they keep on getting h**ny at random and slightly absurd times, (2) MC has childhood trauma and they try to heal the trauma through unrealistic means, and (3) there was an instance where the MC very clearly rescinded consent but the ML continued, and though unfortunately this isn't uncommon in novels, the part that really had me go "yikes" was that the MC said he didn't deserve to be able to rescind consent. You can tell that the author meant the scene to be sexy but even though the MC and ML clearly have a good relationship, that one line made me very uncomfortable. The translator addressed both the second and third points thankfully, but even then all of these things are very characteristic of fanfics written by teens or anyone who doesn't have a great understanding of a healthy relationship.

[collapse]

The romance definitely feels a little unrealistic,
Spoiler

The falling in love and meeting in-person parts could have been fleshed out a little better.

[collapse]
which I guess is typical in a lot of novels, but compounded with the bad fanfic vibes, it started to feel a little unsettling in the second half of the novel.

Honestly I still really like the premise of pastel illustrations and wish that the author had stuck to it/developed it more.

Spoiler

-and not have made the characters so exaggeratedly h**ny.

This novel is so worth it!! It's honestly a hidden gem.

PLOT

The Plot has to be one of the best I have read in such a short story. It's consistent and the characters have depth. Their conversations are so wholesome. Sure they got together really fast but the author wrote it in such a way that you won't feel like it. There is also smut. The interactions are so wholesome and there are no unnecessary villains or such. Even BuBu's mother did not make much of a fuss and only... more>> came up for a chapter. Even the LGBTQ part is considered very well. I think there was M-preg part though I am not sure cuz the MTL may have f*cked that up.. It may have been an alternate universe or something - Not sure.

CHARACTERS

The characters are so GOOD! Their are 3D and the interactions of their family + Little Q and Cat. Song Ran behind his positive shell has a trauma which honestly made me tear up a bit. The way the ML handled it is also so awesome. We see how BuBu improved and ML rectified his actions and realized his mistakes and all of it just makes the book so much more better.

I can't wait to read the TL'd version again because like I told this book is honestly so god and it needs more readers! <<less

It was a 5 star until the smut. The smut wasn't bad but the story lost its charm and the fluffy warmth that captured me.

This story is a slice of life that plays out in only 17 days. MC and ML only meet face to face on day 16. I especially liked how the writer was able to create this warmth and closeness with them being separated by 10000 km. The more devastating I felt when the writer changed the style later on.

The MC has a rather unstable personality and... more>> depending on the readers own experiences there will be parts you either resonate with or feel uncomfortable. There is a part some might take as a flippant personality or capricious when he (sub) conscious tests ML on how much of his dark side is tolerable to him but this part struck me somewhat with nostalgia. When I was young and insecure I did something similar so the fiction came real to me... also a part when he was sick and he made himself depressed with overthinking.

At some parts the writer captured reality close but sometimes there were stumbling stones that tore me out of the flow.

So I did like this for the greater part but I dislike the decline further in. So it's between 5 and 3 stars for me. <<less

I have a similar experience with MC so I'm biased. I also felt healed to a degree while reading this.

Yes, I agree healing trauma isn't as easy as it was shown here BUT finding the right person, that safe place, that home you can finally feel safe and secure in, that makes a huge huge difference that cannot be put into words. Healing is so much faster and more complete.

Of course it doesn't work for some people but that is not the author's intent here. There are other novels here... more>> like Mistakenly Saving The Villain that shows a more arduous process.

Overall 5/5. <<less

Pastel Colours is a romance based novel coupled with child care cute fluff, LGBT elements here and there and a bit of realistic angst about the MC’s past.

Honestly, I was just thinking it might just be romantic and fluffy but Our MC’s (Song Ran) past really did take me by surprise managing to make me tear up. So like tbh, most of the BLs nowadays give their MCs some really sad sob story to sell misery and make them pitiful which I have grown to kind of dislike. On the... more>> other hand, I love how some authors handle this quite well and this author is one of them. Song Ran despite carrying such a sad past was optimistic, kind, willing to give and waiting to fall in love even tho he hid pain deep within himself! I really like this kind of MCs a lot who even tho have sad pasts but grow due to these pasts!

The romance for me was fine.I mean yeah it was too quick but for me it felt like a confirmation that if you are meant to fall in love, you can do so separated by a thousand miles too! I loved ML’s reasoning that even tho they were not familiar. Its not like a scoundrel can change into a good person or a good person into scoundrel just because you get more familiar with them. So I think it was all well n good!

Bubu was really too cute and I loved the ML’s and MC’s opinions on child raising. It gave me different insights and loved the LGBT elements in it!

But I cut two stars due to some reasons that realllyyyyy bothered me:

Even tho I like hot smut but um this smut actually seemed a little cringey if I dare say.I mean smexy times over phone only seem hot after you’ve dobe the real thing no? But thats ok I liked the smut

but the real problem is about

MC’s psychological condition being solved just like that made me want to shout bullsh*t so much! I mean like the author did a terrific job explaining his past and the cause of his condition and all and I would have loved it if the author took her time and slowly and steadily solved it while showering the MC with love bit instead what she does is:

Spoiler

ML forces the MC to count while making him wait on a familiar bus stop and the MC also agrees just like that??? I mean bruh show some resistance you are traumatised!!! But ok lets put that aside too. The ML does come for the MC and just like that the MC is cured!!! Wow!!! Congrats!! Like seriously? Are you kidding me? Is this a joke? Guys! Psychological traumas can’t be cured like that!

[collapse]

But the thing I have a even more of a great amount of problem with is:

Spoiler

MC accidently calls the ML daddy.i mean yeah thats totally ok its an accident but then he describes his embrace as a strong father’s embrace. At this time, the red flags were already flashing before me. This seems so much like a father complex so YAMETE KUDASTOP!!! But no! You have to make him call you daddy during your first time too???!!!? And the MC enjoys calling him that???!!! Ahhhh thats so effed!!!! Like dude I would have given this a 1 star review if not for my liking of some unique elements in this story!

[collapse]

Its an okay-ish read like it has some really good elements as I mentioned above which had made me like it quite a lot but the problems I mentioned that happen later are like really offsetting too (for me at atleast for sure) so i‘ll advise you to read at your own risk. <<less

Pastel colors is exactly like its name; soft, fluffy, and very cute.

However, beneath these soft colors is the MC's past trauma and the ML's mistake.

But have no fear, the author implements communication to its best among both the leads, giving us readers a satisfactory and drama free story.

This is a very fluffy, simple, and short read (with great s*x ;D).

Enjoi and Adieu!

Read the first 20-25 chapters in full, skimmed until the second-last chapter, then dropped.

This one started relatively promising, but the MC was the type I often find annoying - low self-esteem, super sad backstory as the author's attempt to not make him seem completely pathetic without reason, he has a fixation on the ML's child that feels weird and unnatural, and the same goes for the way he falls for the ML. He sees the ML one day playing with his child, and immediately falls head over heals because the... more>> ML is a) hot and b) seems like a good dad (he isn't actually). Now, one thing is being young and inexperienced and having a crush on someone. But the MC continues to insist that the mystery stranger (who for all he knows is a married straight man) is the love of his life for a long time. Until he starts having phone conversations with the ML (without knowing it's his crush) and then falls for him in a super short time span - to the point where

Spoiler

He not only agrees to enter a relationship with someone he's only talked with on the phone for about a week's time, but also tells the ML's child whom he's looking after, and who have already formed an unnaturally strong attachment to what is basically a strange man, that he will be together with the child's dad and they'll form a family. This is so insanely irresponsible, considering the MC and ML have zero idea whether they will work as a couple, since they barely know each other and haven't even met in person. In real life this would be a recipe for disaster.

[collapse]

The writing is very long-winded, most of the story is just about the MC taking care of the ML's child (the ML trusting his 4-year old to a random neighbor has got to be some of the most irresponsible parenting ever) and having long, boring phone calls with the ML.

The ML is a low-key alcoholic - if someone has to drink a glass over wine every single evening, they have a problem. The way the ML's child is conceived is also seriously disturbing, but the most disturbing part is how the ML just shrugs it off and the author just glosses over how insane the mother of the child is.

The premise of the story is fine, but the execution is boring, the characters often act illogical or make decisions that are seriously problematic yet are presented as good decisions. People seem to freak out about the dubcon in the smut part, but for me it's everything leading up to it that's the main issue - the writing simply isn't very good. <<less

It was setting up to be a good deep story but then just went shallow. The romance was rushed and forced big time. Also, I'm all for smut but how it was written didn't fit with the rest of the story's tone.

The MCs backstory was like a villian in the making but some how stayed innocent and sweet? He doesn't become better either, he weirdly obsesses over someone else's kid, promises to live forever with some guy he never meet, and then proceeds to call him daddy. I don't know... more>> the relationship didn't seem as sweet to me as it did to others. <<less

Very beautifully written..

If you are just randomly strollinh through, please please do give this novel a try. Wether you like it or not, it will at least give rise to certain mental health awareness, and I think that, in itself, is worth your time.

Many people dislike the psychological aspect of this novel because it's not realistic and tend to oversimplify the problems.

... more>> But I don't mind it.. I personally think that it gives rise to the issue and makes people think about it without feeling overly burden by it.

Daddy issues, daddy kink, daddy everything

Oh yeah.. This definitely hits a lot of my sweet spots. Using my favorite line from the one & only He Zhiyuan, “It’s more interesting to be a gentleman in the streets and a scoundrel in the sheets”—c30

Cute, hot, angsty. I knew in advance that there was trauma, so I was prepared for darker themes. Did I like the way they approached it MC’s trauma in the end?? Well it’s fiction, so I’m not mad at it. But if you’re gonna throw down some realistic... more>> issues, might as well go big or go home with it. It could have been dealt with better.

Overall, this is a ridiculously good novel that checkmarks a lot of the criteria I enjoy. Some might dislike it & others might also be in search for a sexy single dad who’s looking for a new nanny to come stumbling into his life. I am unmistakably the latter of course ;) <<less

For around two third of the story, full 5 stars. MC's lovable, ML's great, and the kid was adorable throughout the novel. I loved reading MC and ML's conversations.

The rest, it kinda went downhill—I'd say 3-4 stars, mainly because of (minor spoiler?) ... more>>

how the author poorly handled MC's mental illness and a few of ML's behaviors to MC since they got together.

You'll know what I'm talking about when you get there.

I'd really love to let these things slide, but I just couldn't. It dragged me out of my immersion in the story and also made me a bit uncomfortable. The ending was ok though, so there's that xD

I gave out 4 stars because the kid was extremely adorable and actually acted like his age for once; plus their MC-ML-kid dynamics early on were great as well. Translations are excellent, too!

Overall, it's still a fun read, though I kind of lost interest in the last few chapters and just skimmed through it. I haven't read the extras and honestly, I don't think I will. <<less

This is the second novel by Nineteen Jade I'm reading, every time I feel like I'm being pulled into a different world. The descriptions are always so vivid in my mind, I can visualize, smell, feel the surroundings, the atmosphere leading to events are really important.

Unlike PM which was more tragic and made me cry a lot, this one was a slow burn that dealt with past traumas, self-awareness and putting pride aside for character growth. I enjoyed this one, Bubu was so adorable! MC & ML had such a... more>> strong connection in such a short time, yet when you read you'll be able to understand why.

The slow burn aspect.. It hurt me personally.. But I'm so thankful for ML, holding MC close and accepting his darkness. Honestly, it is not easy.. Yet he slowly yet cautiously helped MC heal in his own way. MC was headstrong in his values, he understood the importance of issues easily overlooked, and tried to hold his own wounded heart, despising being pitied. ML he.. Was confident in himself, but when he realized his wrongs he matured even more from it and strived to be a better father, and learned how to truly love and care for MC for his all. I liked all the details that breathed life and vibrancy to the story, the cats, the products, the scenery, conversations, the hard to touch on topics.. Just wow.

although I love the interaction of MC and the kid, the romance was fast when both MC and ML never even met, they knew each other for like half a month without seeing each other and started dating. Short and sweet. Really love this novel! It's so fluffy, touching (yes I cried so many times T^T) and adorable (especially the bun!).

I loved the positivity of the MC.
Spoiler

Despite having past trauma, he was still willing to face life positively. Despite the betrayal that he faced in the past, he still treated people genuinely.

[collapse]
Such a loveable character. It's great that he found his happiness eventually <3

As for the ML, he is so smexy (nosebleed ͡°  3 ͡°). He is a great man, really. I love the way he solved every problem that he had with the MC (just minor stuff, it's not those dog blood misunderstandings). He loved to tease the MC as well, and their interaction was so adorable <3.

And most importantly there are quite a few smutty scenes too which is a major plus point! (At least for me (͡Ⓘ ᴗ ͡Ⓘ))

For those who love buns and fluffy novels and smutty scenes, you should give this novel a try! It's gonna worth your time (trust me).
