Honestly, I like it more than most Er Gen novels. The cultivation is super interesting and the main character is unique and you can actually see his growth throughout the story.

its really good and has some really good and emotional moments. If you like Er Gen work you will love this.

Why poor? (2stars)

Well, mot people seem to be caught up on the sudden childishness of the MC, where he goes crazy and does s*upid shit, and it magically succeeds. Yes, it's badly written, though not because of the mc's reaction. The reaction is over the top, but if you ignore the overdramatisation of the author, it's still believable. He's sixteen, and what sixteenyearold has ever been reasonable?

No, the bad part is that it's been added halfheartedly by the author. Probably because he felt there was too little excitement.

Spoiler

First the elder goes and attacks the enemy tribe. Why? To be sure the enemy was at awakening. Flimsy reason for an unnecessary action. Obviously written in haste without much forethought.

Then he leaves with only his tribes-members while locking up the one kid, instead of all of the kids. Why? To make the MC seem more special, of course. This reason naturally creates a hole in the plot purely to make the MC seem more awesome. BAD AUTHOR, BAD.

That's without mentioning the fact he already had a deal for protection with the dud from wind tribe, which is graciously ignored at this point. Why? To ensure more drama!

Then he goes loco loco in such an exaggerated way all to make him seem "loyal". Like a good little doggy MC. The problem is not him going loco loco, but it being exaggerated to the point the MC sounds like a five-year old rolling on the ground throwing a tantrum.

Then he does s*upid things that would kill anyone, but survives. Why? To make the MC seem even more awesomely invincible, of course!

[collapse]

All this shows that the author needed tricks to pump up his poor excuse for an MC, instead of making him awesome through action. Honestly, the writer is good, and MC was already on his way to being a good one, but for some reason the author had an aneurysm and decided the MC needed exaggerated super-duper over-the-top, impress 2yearolds but leave all others cringing awesomeness that serves no point other than to ruin a good story.

Sad, really. <<less

Underrated Novel!

This author nailed it here with this Novel, a good change of pace after Renegade Immortal, without most of the common cultivation tropes. What I liked most was:

  • MC is loyal to his path, no bipolarity with his acts neither hypocrisy.
  • Bland o nonexistent romance, besides the usual "Saved female falls for MC" but on MC's case. He doesn't shove or plainly reject the women like those MC who are scared of v*ginas, or "boohoo Senior Apprentice Sister" here we get the best natural way a intelligent cultivator can treat any woman. (Still he is a p**sy, but I understand Author wants to keep the Teen Rating)
  • Bromance is strong on this one, MC is loyal to his friends and Masters.
  • No Word Count farming, I was impressed to no see it here like in other novels. At the very least you don't see s*upid side-quest.
  • Bald Crane
  • Deep Plot with plenty of scheming, the MC gets schemed a lot, but author stated at the beginning that this was the motto of the novel, and MC had to work out schemes.
I recommend this Novel.

Honestly this novel is just as good as any of er gen’s other novels. Yes, he creates and tosses characters left and right, but the plot more than makes up for it.

compared to his other novels like ISSTH, pursuit of the truth is a lot more serious, gritty and emotional. Overall, definitely worth a read; this novel does not disappoint

Su Ming, sigh, a very unfortunate character, from birth until 'death'.

Spoiler

It was revealed later that he died not long before his birth, strangely enough, a shard of his soul survived, OP father from a higher Realm etc...

[collapse]

First 100 chapters were clearly well-planned, if not for the useless dragging final fight, everything was great. The 100 chapters should be called 'foundation establishment realm' of this novel.

From a cheerful teenager to a tragic hero...

Su Ming is very unfortunate that I started to hate the author (Er Gen) for creating such a character.

Wang Lin had his share of troubles, but comparing it to Su Ming, I could only sigh with pity. Comparing him to Meng Hao and Bai Xiaochun made feel even worse.

I didn't really want to read this 'Tragedy Tag plus some reviews', but as I'm a fan of ISSTH and RI, I couldn't suppress my curiosity towards the 'Devil'. I could only say that I'm satisfied, but at the same time frustrated.

His journey is so bloody, lonely and brutal, even his first crush seems to be a bad joke of fate...

Su Ming seems to be the only one that have more than enough motives to destroy AllHeaven. His life is hell!!! <<less

The first thing I'd like to say is that the ratings in this site for this novel is definitely not normal. The scuffle between wuxiaworld and qidian had a huge negative impact on this novel as fans of wuxiaworld decided to nuke the ratings to show their anger. And being and Er Gen novel which have usually been handled by wuxiaworld and what they are especially famous for, fans raged with 1 star ratings for this piece of gold.

Being an Er Gen novel this novel can definitely guarantee you one... more>> thing. There is no trope similarities between the other novels apart from the few elements that were meant to be (being a part of the shared universe). People who've read good novels from an author tend to be very comparative in reviewing other works from the same author, not realising that even the worst of said person would still be the cream of the crop among all the other novels out there. Therefore I request you to have a clear mind when you are giving a public review comparitively which might lead to people missing out something amazing.

It's dark. It's sad. It's tragic. It's complex. It's amazing. It's exciting. It's solid.

1) Story :

The story is extremely complicated and flat out a depressing tragedy. But just because it's depressing and a tragedy doesn't mean it's bad but on the contrary is actually a really well thought out and written story. When it comes to deep plots I've never seen/heard of anything much more deep than this. The entire story is COMPLETELY plot driven. Briefly into the story readers will begin to see that there exists a huge plot and this continues on until the point I've read (chapter 1231). The story even at this point still remains a bit hidden but many facts already revealed. Unlike most novels where the plot drives the novel only half way through pursuit of the truth perfectly apt to it's title is a story of pursuing the actual truth all throughout the novel. Despite this huge plot the story doesn't seem to be dragged on and actually progresses rapidly when you least expect it. The story is almost impossible to predict and will always feel like a cliff hanging situation which slowly but surely is being relieved. Some people can tend to find this suspense frustrating (I myself do) , but I also believe that this is the most clear proof indicating an amazing story (like the manhwa tower of God).

Spoiler

Even ISSTH which has a deep plot but is more like a grand scheme that's only unveiled at the end is lacking in compared to this.

[collapse]

2) Character :

Su Ming is not your common protagonist. His life is riddled with misfortune, almost as if the whole universe refuses to acknowledge him. He isn't overly smart or lucky like Meng Hao, nor does he have an hilarious personality like Bai xiaochun. He isn't also cold and ruthless like Wang Lin but someone who is very emotional. The character development is really good and readers can feel the changes as the story progresses. The standing point of this novel are how the side characters are developed not forgotten like in most novels.

3) Writing :

As usual Er Gen's style of writing is as amazing as ever. But pursuit of truth sees particularly more emphasis on the emotional scenes that further make the story feel more tragic. There's almost no humour involved except one character that stands out wierdly hilarious in this tragedy. But overall the writing is extremely fitting for the tragedy it is, without wrongly placed humour just for the sake of it. Little to non existent cliched tropes.

4) Romance :

Like all Er Gen novels romantic subplots exist but is not significant. Although the few scenes are evident in this dark story

5) World Building :

One word : Outstanding.

Pursuit of the truth sees new styles of cultivations different from the common ones all the while ensuring proper connection to other cultivation systems. The most exciting part of this novel lies in this fact that the story explores the shared parts of the Er Gen universe very early on and not just at the ending for the sake of it. As someone who had finished A Will Eternal, ISSTH and almost done with Renegade Immortal I find this very exhilarating as despite much progress the full truth still remains vieled. This "might" be the biggest 'universe' in the Er Gen universe so far, or maybe I'm wrong as I'm not yet done with the story.

Pacing :

The story starts of incredibly slow. With the initial parts of the story beginning only around 100+ chapter. BUT this is not just outlining the world or characters but actually also an important part of the story. When I first read through the novel this was how I felt

Spoiler

Chapter 1: oh cool seems new and interesting

Chapter 100: man this is kinda slow, is it gonna progress at all?

Chapter 150:... Oh damn.... That's some serious stuff

Chapter 350: Oh god this is exciting seems like something

Chapter 500: Now this is what I call a plot

Chapter 950: I did NOT expect that. This story is just insane and sad beyond belief

Chapter 1200: Based on the story there's more yet to come. Oh god I can't wait.

[collapse]

It's been a long while since a extremely plot driven xianxia came out. And this is just gold. Add on to the mysteries of Er Gen's shared universe it gets better.

Meh, its decent. Compared to other novels in NU, this can actually get 4 stars. However the reason I gave 3 stars is that I expected better from Er Gen. Also the fact that he tries too hard to make this story an emotional rollercoaster becomes very annoying.

I've read 900 chapters of this and I was finally hoping :

Spoiler

When he wears the mask that makes him lose his emotions, he stops being a f*cking crybaby and mans up a bit. But oh no although the mask can make him lose his emotions, it still "can't make the pain in his heart disappear". This MC annoys me endlessly, he is more similar to a pu*sy rather than the "devil" as this novel would have you believe.

[collapse]

Also the plots are very forced, some idiotic sh*t happens so MC has to go somewhere. It was fine the first few times but when this is used every time to change a setting, it really makes you think if the author really couldn't think anything better?

There are some well executed plots and mystery as well, however it is drowned by the other parts of the story. If I were to rank it amongst Er Gen's work, it would be :

Renegade Immortal > I Shall Seal the Heavens > A Will Eternal > Pursuit of the Truth

Quality of Pursuit of Truth and A Will Eternal is similar, with this book being a bit worse overall while A Will Eternal shits the bed after the midpoint of the story. <<less

Spoiler

Judging this novel based on it's first arc is not really great. The first arc is just about an innocent boy who was pulled into a messed up situation when his tribe was facing a crisis. He's still a naive boy who thought he is a hero that can protect his tribe.

But, just like Renegade Immortal, you will see a great development in character in the next arc when he was forced to be away in his home tribe. You will see the naive boy pushing himself to survive the unknown environment. You will see him as he slowly matures.

His character is still growing even in the third arc when he learned that his life is in control of another person's hand. Take note: this person is a third step expert while he is only a pitiful first step cultivator At that time.

[collapse]

Honestly IMO, this is better than ISSTH when you compare the character growth and the plot development. I'm not saying ISSTH is bad, actually it's a great novel, it's actually bad to compare the two cuz ISSTH has the humor PoT lacks.

It can stand next to RI honestly. This is one of the few novels where you see almost all the characters the MC interacts with are all scheming and cunning. Both novels has amazing character growth from naive village/tribal boy to a cunning top experts. They're similar yet different.

All-in-all one of the top novel for me in it's genre. Though you can expect Er Gen is a failure at romance, but that's a minority if you're not into romance. <<less

I won't give this one full marks cause there is still a long way to go, but the current progression is very well paced. For some SU Ming might be kind of a bland character, but I feel this novel is more about the enigma and his search for his roots so far. I can't say that the support cast is very outstanding either, BUT

Heavy spoiler !

Spoiler

It seems that the people from dark mountain village will be gradually making a comeback as immortals because that whole thing was some kind of illusion. I have the feeling they will play a bigger role in the next few hundred chapters so Er Gen will have a chance to redeem some of them

[collapse]

I enjoy the cultivation and progression of Su Ming so far. It is only nattural that cultivators spend a lot of time in the first step (chapter wise) and we have more time skips and a more rapid developement in later steps.

Er Gen does really good job with establishing worlds. I have a very vivid picture in my head of all locations he indroduces.

I don't know if it is because of the vast quantities of garbage being translated in ww, qi and volare, but this stands out as a gem and should be given the respect it deserves. <<less

Okay here is my review for this novel

If you are the kind of reader who takes things in novel logically. Then prepare yourself because the logic in this novel sucks and s*upid

Spoiler

in this novel, lightning is nothing but illusion, in short lightning is not exist in reality. So how does the lightning form ?

Lightning is formed because of void lightning and earth lightning meet.

What is void lightning ? What is earth lightning ? How do they form ?

No one knows about them.
When we are talking about lightning in real life, that's not how the lightning forms. The logic of lightning in this novel is so ridiculous and s*upid. I know I shouldn't have related it to science since it's just a fiction. But I can't help it, I just find it very s*upid.
[collapse]

Main Character

I don't really like the MC, I don't know why. Perhaps it's because MC is pathetic and reckless. And his homesick is annoying. But MC is still better than a spoiled troublemaker like meng hao.

but I really like the cultivation system of this novel. Where you have to draw your own mark, find your epiphany, etc.

One of my favorite novels from Er Gen! Probably somewhere on my 10-20 list.

A really interesting novel. The cultivation here feels different from most other novels and the fight scenes are epic! Dude's good at writing fight scenes and strong emotions. Oh, the emotions in some parts of the novel get intense (I'm sensitive tho).

Characters are pretty good. Not the most memorable, but they're decent enough. The girls and pets aren't annoying, even though they don't get much 'screen time'. MC's pretty OP, but he isn't the strongest: his enemy... more>> is strong too.

Su Ming's mysterious background is really interesting: I'm metaphorically dying to know. He's a pretty good MC. Kinda calm, but isn't a complete iceberg anti-hero. Gotta love him hiding his identity and all those hype moments from the author are suuuuper satisfying.

Spoiler

MC fights with blood and lightning! He's pretty fast!

A bit of a slow progression, but it's a good story! :D <<less

Im immersed with the world here. The primordial life of seeking herbs, hunting, and grow stronger with power of tattoo/blood vein. The story is progessing for a better. The MC isnt overpowered, but his alchemist is making him having the advantage.

Spoiler

The first volume reach climax with war between tribes, and now beginning on 2nd volume. The only downside is the final battle of volume 1 is showing too much confusing technique, and I have to skip that part. The only thing I disagree is how MC select a beauty without much intelect as lover (well they are still young, its puppy love, but I hope the girl can grow more mature in the future). Other than that, everything is very good.

One of the best novel I've read so far. First one I've of the Er Gen novel series, which luckily turns out to be the correct one to start with XD... since the series go from Pursuit of the Truth > Renegade Immortal > I Shall Seal the Heavens.

I want to like this novel but it tries too hard with the mysteries and trying to make the reader feel emotional. And the worse part is certain segments drags on and on. The closest example I can give without spoiling the story is imagine a single dinner could be talked about for 15+ chapters when you were already over it by the third chapter and wishing it would end by the sixth. Then the MC goes take a leak in the toilet and that's another 3 chapters. Ugh...

But there... more>> is a light at the end of the tunnel, because once you get to around chapter 250's, things only drag on for a few chaps and the story becomes more entertaining then. <<less

I am enjoying the read. The main system of cultivation is interesting. I feel as though the novel does suffer a little from its purposeful shadowy ambiguity (towards clouding the origins of the M.C) which hurts the world-building in the novel. But still very enjoyable with a good mix of varied cultivation, battles of wit, and action scenes.

This is by far Er gen's best work and if we are going by plot it has the best plot of ant Chinese novel I have ever read period. I'm not going to spoil any part of the plot here because experiencing all the challenges twist and turns by yourself is the best experience you can ever have.

But in short, if your looking for a novel where the MC isn't a bloody idiot where things don't happen for the sake of convenience where the plot actually makes sense and where... more>> the MC actually feels and acts like a person instead of a cardboard cut out then this is the novel for you.

Mind you the story is a bit depressing and has you guessing at every turn but that's what makes it amazing.

Lastly, ignore all the 1-star reviews from the idiots out here either they're s*upid and can't comprehend what good story or they have the mind of a three-year-old and only want to read about some op MC coming to save the day whenever he sees anyone in trouble with a trail of harem members following behind him. <<less
