When a futuristic scientist is transported into the body of a young man in a fantasy world, his curiosity and desire for power push him to pursue magic. In a world without mercy, Leylin has no qualms about doing anything if it means benefits. He is cold, ruthless and calculating, never forming attachments that could impede his ultimate goal…

Honor? Who needs that… Hmmm… that guy seems too powerful for me to take on now… I better keep a low profile for now.

You want me to help you? What do I get out of it? Nothing? Bye.

Hmm… that guy looks like he might cause me problems in the future. Better kill him before he becomes a problem…

Honestly, this novel is sh*t (really sorry to say this). The true point is 3.7.

First, the plot is the MC was a SCIENTIST who reincarnated to the Magus world with A.I. Chip. Though the novel mentioned about laboratory and some physics things, but they are very very vague. The explanation to support how do the MC apply science to the Magus path was nowhere. The A.I. Chip is also too OP, combining with the weak science logic, made the plot as the MC as a scientist is just killing this... more>> novel. (The scientist who his brain doesn't have any science knowledge at all.)

Second, the storyline is f*cking shit. It is like the writer didn't plan anything before writing for the next chapter. This made many irrational scenes appear many times.

Third, if I remember correctly the MC never lose in any fight or scheming. There were always some s*upid things that appear to make him won as mentioned in the 'Second'.

Last, the describing is also shit. There were always many times that the MC was thinking something off but the writer didn't mention it to give some clues for the reader to guess, and the next scene was the MC win, and the reader don't know what going on, how did he win, and so on.

In summary, the storyline is the sh*t of this novel and I endured reading it till the end. Damn. <<less

Ok, so I came to this novel to quench my thirst for an average, not an over-lucky protagonist, fighting for a solid goal much like in "Reverend Insanity" after reading it.

The conclusion: Yeah, I found something a bit similar to RI, okay, BUT it's similar in the wrong sense dude. That Leylin guy just said 'I want eternity' out of nowhere, he didn't even enjoy all the different types of places in that world, nor the powers (magic). Then we get some more bits and pieces from RI- average talent,... more>> 'I want to become eternal', the world will, expressionless, grandmaster master realms, dreamscape, 9 ranks, beings at later ranks waiting to be reincarnated, etc. To be honest, it feels like this was written by a fanboy wanting to do an original novel.

More cons :

  1. He has an overpowered AI chip which can stimulate basically anything, there goes my average, non-lucky protagonist. BTW it is a world run by researchers, so it becomes more prominent.
  2. This guy gets everything right into his lap whenever he has a problem.
    Spoiler

    1) way to become a magus with astonishing potential. 2) a lab rat (clone of a rank 4 magus) to increase a rank. 3) wisdom tree to give him an answer to his problems. 4) destiny child right after he completed that precognition meditation technique (I forgot the name), many more.

    [collapse]
  3. In RI, fang yuan did mu*der and other ruthless acts because his opportunities were non-existent with some shitty luck and being under pressure of death from all around, BUT here we got this dude who has the greatest luck, an OP device (exclusive), large lifespan, the leeway of going around other worlds to explore but he still doesn't want to quitely do research and goes out to.......
  4. I read two instances where the AI chip gave him the secret abilities of his opponents without any clues whatsoever in the battle stimulations. I mean, in a place where knowledge of the opponent is the key to victory, this is way too much OP.
  5. He's dumb as f*ck-
    Spoiler

    1) goes to the inheritance ground with an heir of a large organization while knowing full well that heir's gonna be killed and make Leylin take the blame. 2) uses the wisdom tree to awaken the purgatory world's will rather than his own (which is rank 9 and is gonna favor him exceedingly) then he could just re-start his journey of normal magi with the help of his world's will rather than a warlock (whose last upgrade was rank 8) 3) He doesn't learn about soul where his greatest advantage of AI chip lies.

    [collapse]
  6. the world-building is shit, for the people that search for 'truth', they, for some reason, keep their research a secret from each other and fights with each other for the results. The gods didn't search for the remains and inheritances of the people which caused their world to decline (that's basically irresponsible to your life). The people kept underestimating Leylin even after he advanced most quickly with that average aptitude (I'm surprised they didn't turn him into a lab rat)
I would've written more if I wasn't so lazy but yeah, in a nutshell, this is the story

1 - 100 ----------- good

100 - 700 ----------- turning a little illogical

700 - 870 ----------- meh

870 - 997 ----------- ugly <<less

I completed this story and I have to say that it was interesting. I appreciated that he was consistent in his character and his objective to get stronger. Like others have mentioned he was a selfish and cold person to the end so don't expect anything in the relationship department.

The MC is just too special, you either love him or hate him for the piece of sh*t he is. He can do absolutely anything (good things bad things) to obtain benefits. Expert in manipulation. As a person I wouldn't wanna be acquainted with him in anyway in real life.... more>>
Spoiler

the only person he has a somewhat good relationship throughout this whole series is his wife

[collapse]

A.I chip was overused but given how useful it is it would be s*upid not to use it so yeah that's how it is.

Story pace is good. World building is good. Leylin farlier can be considered a villain given the things he's willing to do to get what he seeks. But he's different from a pure evil villain like feng yuan (MC from Reverend insanity). LF would opt for the most effective plan doesn't matters if it's good or evil and he would prefer the good to maintain a good reputation and avoid making himself a public enemy if possible whereas FY would opt for the most ruthless and evil effective plan disregarding his reputation. During their journey to their final goal LF is willing to enjoy his life (s*x, money, food) whereas FY has only his end goal in his sight. LF can be grateful towards people who are good to him and would return favours if it isn't much too difficult for him whereas FY is just too busy acting evil that barely anyone gets to help him.

Nice story with an MC who isn't total nice guy for no reason, gets a harem for existing with endless plot armour or edgy OP kid kills for the sake of killing. Granted the AI chip is OP at times and helps significantly upgrade the main character. A fair amount of luck is also present in the story but not to the point of "magical artifact capable of everything falls from the sky".

Spoiler

1. The story mainly follows Leylin Farlier as he improves from lowly leech son of a noble to leader of a powerful Warlock clan to a rank 9 existence capable of scaring off the god of his world. Leylin is a much more cold and ruthless MC than others. He has no qualms about betrayal or allying with enemies as long as he obtains benefits. Unlike other MCs he doesn't do the typical bullsh*t saving everybody and crashing head first into matters that are beyond him. A main problem I have with the story is the lack of real friends he makes as he betrays, isn't very close or abandons most of them.

2. This novel is very distinctively divided into arcs where connections between them are sometimes rather loose (except for the power). Some arcs are a bit harder to follow and on my first read through I skipped many chapters even some entire arcs.

South Coast Arc:

I like to separate this arc into 4 parts even if they are nonetheless very intertwined:

Magical School Arc: This arc does much of the world building, power scaling, south coast and much more that will be prevalent in the rest of the arc. It mainly chronicles Leylin as he goes from the Chernobyl Islands to the South Coast and attempts to become more powerful and builds himself an image with benefits but without attracting too much attention. Despite the naming the school life isn't as significantly developed as I wished and is very soon replaced.

Escape to Extreme Night City: In this arc Leylin exiles to Extreme Night City for 3 years for a "mission" which is in fact a cover of an escape for the talented students from the academy which is preparing for a devastating war. On the way, he experiences the World of Magi outside the academy freely and obtains a number of resources and money. He accomplishes his mission with a number of casualties. While in Extreme Night City he has the freedom of experimenting as he pleases and brewing without fear of attracting attention and obtains many valuables and significantly improves his power. This arc is pretty mediocre in general. Not the most memorable.

Exile to the Light: Leylin is called back into the academy for a bloodbath. And eventually fights his way to some valuable items. He later hunts for a famous Magus' inheritance and kills his teammates for it. He then has to escape to the Light Magi side of the Continent through some dangerous areas. This arc does a lot of World Building on the south coast and serves as the introduction to the Warlocks and provides much of the power Leylin will use for the next three arcs. The Margaret Canyon is also very interesting.

More but too lazy to continue

[collapse]

8.5/10

Good time killer but nothing that will blow your mind. The World of the Gods arc towards the end is fun though and a breeze of fresh air. <<less

A satisfying novel that feels really different from your usual Chinese novel. I'll list out the yays and nays of this novel

Yay:

  1. The setting/world. The universe is basically so expansive that it wouldn't come as a surprise if the author decided to write 2000+ chapters out of it.
  2. The power-up system and how it affects fights. The power-up system is interesting because there are multiple ways for a character to power up and reach the top. Also, rank-skipping fights rarely happen (and deemed nearly impossible) which makes the novel more 'realistic' as MC only has advantage over those of same rank.
  3. The MC. MC is anti-hero with questionable morals but that makes the entire thing interesting. MC is intelligent, rational and very cunning which makes his journey and fights really interesting.
  4. No repetitive subplot. You don't see MC undergoing smelting trials, young genius tourneys and sorts that you see in typical Chinese novels.
Nay:

  1. Rushed final arc and ending. The pacing seems to be nitro-boosted in the last 100 chapters and especially the ending. The ending was not bad but just super rushed.
  2. Not utilizing the expansive universe. Until the end of the novel, we basically know only about 20-30% of the places in the universe. Would have been great if we get to see more places

it's been a long while since I last read a light novel. Started reading a couple of english novels for the first time in like years and then came back to light novels. This book has been on my to read list almost since the beginning, and I finally decided to get on with it.

well, this guy is OP, which I'm always a fan of. I like the ai chip as a cheat, which only accelerates his growth. Many might be turned off by the absolute madness of his growth... more>> and improvement, but I'm a fan of that kind of stuff so it's all based on your own taste. I did like that he had enemies, but it was more in the form of a long-term goal and rarely was like too strong and overpowering to the extent that he would always be running for his life. He would also go to new worlds but it wasn't the big trope of oh he's barely an ant, and he can't do anything out of line before he gets stronger. The MC is pretty realistic and calm, and remains relatively intelligent throughout, which is quite rare.

ultimately, this story was too long and drawn out. I really liked the first four or five sections, but by the time I got to the end, I was already getting a bit tired and bored of the story. I do wish that there was a little more of romance or something that would make it more interesting, but it is in his character to not feel that kind of intense emotion. Maybe i'll come back and finish it later. <<less

It would've been good if the MC didn't have the cheat that made everything so easy for him to achieve. This made the MC arrogant (as usual) and over-confident. He relied entirely on the A.I. Chip.
Spoiler

I've only read up to chapter 46, the MC have a scent masking powder that will only last 3-4 days, which he had used so that whoever is tracking him wouldn't find him. So what did the MC do after using the powder? Stayed around in the vicinity for 4 days to "discover" who was following him. He already suspected who were following him, and if it was the fully fledged magus then he wouldn't stand a freaking chance!!! So instead of effin ran off after using the powder, he effin stayed around. What is the effin point of using the limited powder then????!!!! And then he realised that he wouldn't be able to take the enemy on because the enemy is stronger (duhh you have already know this!), but of course our MC survived with the help of strong plot armour! How was that a rational decision for a supposedly successful scientist to make?? I really hate these type of out of character characters! A scientist that doesn't even use his effin brain and just relied on the cheat! Ridiculous!

[collapse]

Note: I've finally finished the novel. It's not the worst novel I've read, although there are plot holes and some of the plot seem a bit forced
Spoiler

(for example the ending, distorted shadow betrayed the whole magi alliance because MC wouldn't let him take control of his body and become distorted shadow's puppet. Like wtf?

[collapse]

Leylin is definitely The Devil, he is emotionless and only cared about power and immortality and he achieved this with the A.I. Chip (a freaking supercheat that allowed him to master everything and predict every situation. He had no other personality other than this, which made this MC flat and robotic.
The ending: I feel like the author was under too much pressure and he just wanted to finish the novel because the ending was so rushed and very anticlimatic. He spent more time focusing on insignificant characters that were killed off at the end of that arc, who none of the readers care a whit about.

The good thing about this novel was how different it was from all the others typical heroic and brawn but brainless MCs of other novels. Leylin is ruthless and did not let others get away with betrayals as he always had schemes within schemes within schemes. Nobody could out-schemed Leylin and he did not hesitate to kill those who needed to be killed.
Read this if you don't mind psychotic protagonist and can tolerate evil atrocities and hypocrisies. Although beside the previous original Leylin's (before our MC took over the body) attempted r*pe on the little Countess, there wasn't any r*pe in the rest of the story.

Now this story has a very special place in my heart because it was the first novel that broke the Xianxia model of "The Hero Protagonist", it gave me something that I really never thought I wanted but now I crave it and made me read other good novels like Reverend Insanity because of it, but although this novel is good.. Is not great, some might call it nitpicking, but the thing is.. Is it really?

The AI chip is the main thing that I dislike about this novel, and its... more>> not because it helps the protagonist or makes him power up faster, no neither of that.. Its because the AI chip is a tool that the author uses to not have to describe things, instead of creating a unique method of learning, or interesting backstory to different powers and journeys, the AI chip just calculates everything without needing any development and handles it to the Protagonist.

The world is a classic Fantasy World, but with the Chinese style, instead of the Japanese happy land where every damn farmer, peasant and s*ave is a happy and cute loli girl, this world is grey, people dislike their place in society, and some work hard to rank up and have a more comfortable life, that makes the world more believable.

And now the Protagonist, although I really LOVE this protagonist, I need to point out things that always annoyed me about him, yes he is heartless and cold, he moves only when he has guarantee of success and because of that there's not much Plot Armor around him, great! But the thing is, we never get to understand WHY he is like that.. He comes from Earth and on earth he is a very successful middle-aged scientist that happened to die on a nuclear explosion caused by his own, but that doesn't explain why he is so cold-hearted and borderline evil, I mean people can be evil but he has no real reason to behave like that, nothing shaped him to become like that, I like that he doesn't fall for cute girls and behave like an grown up like he should, but I never understood where all the cruelty came from, was he a psycho on earth? Did he have family abuse problems? Was he mentally ill? I don't know! It was never explained, different from Reverend Insanity that I came to read way after.. The protagonist here has no real reason to behave the way he does, and that makes me.. Disappointed.. Because in my eyes its a huge flaw

The story is interesting, its a mix of Xianxia mythos (the cultivation levels) but done in a Western Fantasy world, and it blends in very well, and is way easier for me to remember character names like "Brian Stock" than it is to remember "Wu Zun Shu Zhi" for example, so its great.

The story goes very well until the central continent part, that's where I really feel like a bit of let down, halfway through the central continent story we start getting this HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE time skips of 500 years, 1000 years, and then start growing to 100k years by the end of the story, I mean.. Really? You know how much could've happened during that massive skip.. And you just jumped? I get it, not everything is interesting, and they need to stick with the main story, but like 500, 1k or 100k years are a time skip that could have huge stories on it own, never make that huge leap when storytelling, because it breaks the rhythm of the story.

The ending was rushed, I think that's a reason why they had those huge time skips, to rush to the ending, I feel that without rushing and with proper sized timeskips this novel would've reached 5k chapters, and the author probably didn't want to be stuck with it for that long, but it doesn't make it any less disappointing.

I'm giving 4/5 because it didn't fail in sucking me in and immersing me in its word, that's what every good story does, so it deserves 4 stars, but not 5 because of the details stated above, if you are interested in reading this, its a great ride, and the rushed ending doesn't really ruin these feelings, just disappoints a bit because it leaves us wanting way more than we got. <<less

Best novel for a reader, that bored of other novel MC keep depending on his or her luck. Sometimes, luck too part of strength, but if its keep happening, then its make no sense, and it will make the plot more disgusting.

Good (MC using his brain more often, or cunning. Same as the real human in this Earth. Have a cheat ability, but hey!!! all other Xuanhuan or Xinxia MC can't even use 100 % of his own ability or Item, so it okey for leylin can't do... more>> it. MC is a rational person, keep saying " my life is more important " and do other stuff..

Bad (To many time skip, author keep saying that MC is a apathetic, cold, cunning, evil, etc... but all that doesn't even matter. Author always make MC battle for no reason at all!!! and at that time skip, all the information about dangerous place is nonexistent!! MC keep saying that this place or that place is dangerous, even Rank 4 magus can die!! But more often or not, MC will always be there, with no information at all!! so the time, is doesn't matter.

Spoiler

Chapter 1 until 300 is wonderfull! An MC using his brain rather than pure luck is briliant. More than that, is.... what I say ermm...a pure luck! MC still cunning, but not to much. Like other newbie, he's always dying.. or injured for no reason. Rational? apathetic?... hehe all that is gone!! leylin already become like other MC, keep depending on his lucks, a fighting with no reason, author wants more reader... and etc... its get disgusting... and keep pathetic...

First of all, this novel isn't your typical good guy saves everyone kinda thing. Not this one is similiar to gu master in that both MC are ruthless, evil, and persue eternal life.

This novel's MC will do whatever it takes, friends? Family? Romance? No, f*ck that, this is a true MC that doesn't falter in the face of these meager reasons. His morality is f*cked but that is what I like. Overall the MC is a psychopath from our view.

An incredible read if you prefer cunning and ruthless protagonists. It takes a while to get going, but it is well worth it to make it to the end. Interesting story. Just be prepared - if you're someone who hears the tone of a dialogue in your head, then this novel is going to take you quite some time to adjust. If you're gonna marry and have some overpowered children then you should have at least some relevant interactions with them. But what does the MC does? He basically ignores her from the time he met her to the very end (which s**ked. Rushed. Nonsensical. So after getting to almost the top of the magnus world he sneak himself into the god's worlds with reincarnated body. Basically story almost restart with him climbing up to become a god. Its still fun story and all. Then he does this quick detour to the shadow world to do some stuff that's not related to the plot at all.

Finally the big showdown between the warlocks and the gods happen. And its a total sh*t show where the entire war basically get skipped beside 1 battle. Then when it comes to the final showdown.... There is none lol. MC just get some bullsh*t plot armor to gain control of both planet's will fuse them and story end with him invading the world he came from...

This novel is mediocre.

The main protagonist has the personality of a 'villain' that wants to be a villain but ends up doing whatever the f*ck they want. At first, they were not a saint, nor a devil, but after they successfully (hell, maybe even before that) become a rank one warlock, they become a crazed lunatic that pretends to be sane.

The novel's characters aren't developed well at all, and once you have completed the novel and wait a few months whilst reading other novels, there's no way in hell you'll... more>> remember a lot of the characters that stem from the very start to the end of the novel.

I honestly wouldn't have an issue if the author had at least tried to have the guy introduce things such as sci-fi weaponry instead of just cold weaponry and 'magic'. You can honestly just take away the fact that he is a 'scientist', rename his 'AI Chip' to probably some sentient being that the character gets from some not-so-dangerous place and bam! You'll be easily able to completely copy the entire storyline and make it a little more interesting? Who knows, just me rambling.

Although I do not think that the authors of these novels read these reviews, I recommend reading actual novels, watching movies to see the plot and how character development (for character development, TV shows are better.) is like, plan out the basic components for the novel and then start writing. I barely see anything interesting because a lot of the novels nowadays for me is easily predictable after reading a fair bit since it doesn't keep me in suspense or have anything interesting (although everyone has different tastes regarding towards what you'd consider interesting or not). To the lovely translators here, if you do not have a person who can edit the novel to get rid of unnecessary junk (grammatical errors, punctuation issues, spelling, etc.) when they read through your English translation. <<less

I don't want to write a long review especially since many before have more or less covered the important points so I'll generalize. If your expecting this MC to be "good" and that is what you are used to then do not even start this novel. However if you want a more "neutral evil", not necessarily good but not going out of his way to ruin the fun for people then this is perfect. The complaints about the MC are a bit strange to me. He may not be a... more>> do-gooder but the MC does have a bottom line and for me thats all I need. He doesn't go out of his way to terrorize the weak and innocent but he is an MC who doesn't mind getting his hands dirty to reach the apex. This may sound contradicting but if you read this novel you will realize how cut throat the Magus world is portrayed that you will realize the MC is actually not that evil of a guy. His good/evil aspect kinda reminds me of Li Qiye from Emperor's Domination. Not saying the two are alike personality wise but they both share that propensity to do both good and evil. Also a major pro about this novel is that I doesn't get bogged down by useless conflicts particularly ones relating to women, which I found very refreshing. Female characters do play important roles but you will never see the MC going out of his way to save a damsel in distress or get caught in their baggage. That is probably why even with the "polygamy" tag you will notice no "harem" tag. <<less
