I Don’t Want To Be An Ojakgyo

Description

I was reincarnated as the supporting character of a novel.

As a wingwoman in a depressing romance novel titled at that. Romance is out of the question, and the future of my family is ominous because of debt.

I was going to become a civil servant to gain some of the splendor I never got in my last life…but the male love interests are acting kind of strange?!

“Just think about it, does Shushu look like someone who would blush and act shy?”

“Wow…….that would be great.” Cory said as he stared at Hylli in a daze, and Yves frowned and whispered to himself.

“Should I just kidnap her…….”

Swan wrapped his face with both of his hands and stayed quiet. His face turned bright red. The blush turned his ears red.

Why are you guys fooling around, you’re supposed to be obsessing over the heroine.

The story of Shuraina West, Shushu’s reverse harem academy survival.

Note: Ojakgyo means wingman/woman!

I went ahead and finished the novel in Korean after being introduced via the English translation.

I loved the main character: she's pragmatic, smart, hilarious, and generally more relatable than I've found other transmigrators. I found that the characters were also a lot more relatable and multi-dimensional than some of the other transmigrator stories that I've read.

Spoiler

I was also very surprised at the original MC (Hestia) and how funny she is: she's definitely fleshed out, unlike some of the other transmigration stories where the original main character stays flat and unrelatable. I really dislike some of the other stories that focus on the transmigrator only and seem to forget that the original novel canon existed, and this always seemed that part in mind.

She's extremely caring of the main character and is also very possessive of her: she's blatantly hateful towards some of the love interests and always diverts the main character's attention to her. She's also more than just a pretty face (unlike some stories) : she's intelligent, caring, and quite lovable. It definitely doesn't feel that way towards the beginning of the story, but I really loved all of the characters by the end of the story.

It's really good. Look at Moonlike's review if you want a review, because it's all true.

By the way, this is coming from a guy who can't normally stomach cheesy, shallow stories. This series deserves all its praise. I have no idea why there are so many low ratings- but if I can say something for sure, they haven't read enough. Character interactions are realistic and well written, and they act appropriate for their background and age. Every character is developed adequately, which includes even the former female lead. It tackles... more>> some pretty mature topics too, including female empowerment which was actually handled in a tasteful manner that isn't preachy or condescending towards the characters and readers, nor is it misandrist.

I've read a lot of good and bad novels on novelupdates, and I can say for sure that this story ranks all the way near the top of my list. This is legitimately a diamond in the rough, I didn't expect something this good from a 4.2/5 rating (which is actually pretty mediocre on this site). Please please please read it. <<less

I'm so thankful this got picked up! When I first read the promo this was only being translated a few chapters, but recently I was looking for a new read and saw the 100+ chapters and immediately binged it!!

I fell in love with the plot and how their relationship forms- it is not through love at first sight or anything shallow, but their relationships are formed by going through hardships and ngl I had a really hard time deciding who I wanted her to end up with. Their bonds are... more>> really emphasized and I like how the author writes enough screentime for all the MLs. What surprised me most was how the author introduced new MLs, because whilst they joined in late, you can't help but ship them hard with ShuShu. Usually, when the MLs are introduced late, you'd assume they are the 2nd, 3rd 4th etc leads, but in this novel they all have reasons to like her and I love how it didn't only focus on romance, but on each characters' growth and how ShuShu's actions really helped them grow individually. (I especially love her relationship with the Heroine, it's not often you see this kind of friendship with the MC and the Heroine forming) I'm really looking forward to reading more!

5/5, thank you for translating this! <<less

This is similar to Magical Explorer, in that the MC becomes a mob character in a cheesy harem novel. The impression given is that it's going to be a satire/parody (with the new MC recognizing the novel was bad), but all that happens is the previous MC being replaced by the new mob one and the novel becoming that which it was mocking before: pure harem cliche. There are some good comedy moments, though. Most are born from the MC's awkwardness, but they're still funny. Hence the 2 stars.

While her goal is to be an independent woman working as a knight, male leads keep gravitating towards her by 'chance' and end up in a friendly relationship, forgetting about the original heroine for no reason even though they were mesmerized by her at first. No normal dudes, though, they must all be the famous, handsome, noble capture targets, the most prominent men on the school and country. By chap 30 there are 3 love interests already and while the first one was original and quirky, despite being the Crown Prince, the other were cliche and creepy.

Spoiler

One guy watching her sleep and touching the girl while she's sleeping. The other pressing the girl against the wall and posing as 'bad boy' while being aggressive.

She's kick ass at magic and sword fighting but when at the capture target's presence forgets all about it and needs to be carried around like a damsel in distress.

Bunch of dumb excuses and 'conveniences' for them to touch, among other things. I dropped at the third love interest because the amount of s*upid cliches was through the roof and I was rolling my eyes at it.

[collapse]

The magic system is bogus and barely explained. She can create any type of magic circles doing all kinds of wondrous things because 'she knows about earth's science" and that's it. World building is medieval Europe + magic and monsters so no surprises there as well. The plot is the new MC gathering money to prevent her family from going broke.

I expected something in line with the manga 'Beware of the Villainess', but it couldn't be farther from it. This is a cliche shoujo harem novel and the transmigrated mob premise is irrelevant. Read if you like cheesy harem romance for girls and comedy, avoid otherwise.

First off, if you're reading this for the summary/tags, or if you read the promotional manhwa, keep an open mind because it'll be nothing like you expect.

The story itself is written sort of like a visual novel/dating sim/mobile otome game, where the main story has all the plot and just the buildup for the relationships but no solid ship until the end, then there are extras for each ship (even technically the OFL, although one ML still had a disappointing 2nd ML syndrom friendzone ending).

Pros: The characters feel like people,... more>> the plot is interesting and engaging (there's some wild twists near the end but they make sense for the world), and the author is really great at balancing humor, fluff and angst.

Cons: sometimes things seem too easy or the world seems too convenient. The last arc pretty much had no tension and started and ended super quickly. Also, there's quite a few lose ends that I feel didn't really get addressed properly, even in the extras.

All in all, one of my most favorite novels and definitely a novel that I recommend everybody read. I can't really put into words how much I love and enjoyed reading this. I fully recommend this to everyone too.

ps. Kudos to the translator as well, their translations are really good and I wouldn't have been able to enjoy this novel without their hard work! <<less

The characters are really detailed and realistic, and always make you root for them.

on top of that, the translator of the story is wonderful, even putting up tl;dr-s and warnings for chapters that may be too disturbing for some to read/read in depth.

but... god, the way this author achieves character growth and builds trust between characters...
They seem to really like the idea that most of the character growth occurring has to be from the protagonist or another character embarrassing themselves (mainly the protagonist, though). And I honestly am... more>> getting really tired of it.

It’s painful enough to exist as someone who gets really bad second-hand embarrassment, so please don’t award me finally getting past an embarrassing scene with MORE embarrassing scenes

this being said, if you dont have any trouble with second-hand embarrassment this is a good read. I’ll probably even continue reading it and just skip scenes I dont like (which I have to often) <<less

Edited May 12, 2021:

I previously dropped this novel because of the incredibly poor translation. While looking for something new to read, I noticed there was a new translator that had gone over those unreadable parts. I decided to give us one another go, and I could not be happier! This novel is really well done for the genre especially. The main character is smart, quick witted, and capable. She is able to grasp the situation, and isn't worshiping the original story like most main characters in this genre... instead she... more>> is using it as a guideline, but paving her own way. I only wish I could change my previous rating to a full 5 stars.

Original June 03, 2020:

The story is really interesting, and I love the main character's resolve and desire for independence. I was really enjoying this one, but then the translator was switched and I had a really hard time following the story. Does the translation get better, or should I give up on this one? As it stands, it's really hard to decipher and I can't follow the plot as well. = ( <<less

Reasons to read this:

  1. Hilarious, Cool, Reliable and Strong MC (Shuraina/Shushu) - She is hardworking, good in magic and swords, an inventor, and super cute. She LOVES MONEY and has another persona called "Shunivalen"- a famous inventor and magical tools operator.

  2. THE MLS!! All of them have different backgrounds so everyone has their own favorite, but don't worry about 2nd, 3rd, 4th lead syndrome because the side stories got you! The MLs had different endings with our MC. And the dynamics are so fcking cute!!! I love how the author made 4 romance stories in one novel. I repeat, this is good so read it! Damn it.
  3. It's a reverse harem but the ending and the story flow is satisfying. The MLs friendship with her is fcking hilarious and wholesome, there are also tearjerker scenes that will grab your attention and relate to the characters.
  4. The OG FML (Hestia) acted weak but had a character development. She's obsessed withour MC and isn't flirty with men, is two-faced but in a good way. A strong woman and a real good friend to our MC.
  5. It's NOT CLICHE. It's one of the best, if not, the #1 reverse harem novel on my list.

I love the MC in this one, she’s super pragmatic and wise. This story is pretty fun and light so far. The ML that we’ve seen the most of is (I don’t remember his name, sorry) strawberry boy and I love him so much- he’s super cute and sweet ... more>>

The title, image, and summary are all very misleading. Yes, it is a cannon fodder side-villian redemption story (in name), but it plays out more like a classic op transmigrator making money and expanding their influence in a eurofantasy setting. There isnt any revenge or remenants of the original plot, and its mostly abt the trauma she suffered from her past life influencing her + her protagonist halo collecting harem members to her side. She is a "noble lady, " but dont expect romance, politics, or beautiful dresses. Think more... more>> along the lines of adventure fantasy and inventing things.

In this new liftime she has 2 loving parents and 2 (?) loving brothers, with no imediate finacial issues and upper class status. Only she cant escape her past life and cares abt nothing but making money (which is fair consitering her parents are reckless and take on lots of debt which will lead to the destruction of her house eventually. Very reckless parents) and she has once again become the primary breadwinner of the house.

she is defined by her "dead fish eyes" and "lack of dreams" (which I think refeers to how she doesnt hope for unrealistic things like rainbows and unicorns. She seems to have a lot of abition). She intends to become a high ranking magic knight 100% bc it pays well and has good retirement. She also invents crazy magic and sells it under an alter ego.

fishes (love interests) :

  1. the heroine-
    Spoiler

her childhood best friend who seems to know the novel plot and be terrified of it. Just wants to stay together and not meet the same bad end where her friend hates her and shes stuck with a harem she doesnt want

  2. the prince-
    Spoiler

the MC mugged him in an alleyway fr his sword then blackmailed him w cringy recordings, but they eventually became friends & sparring partners at school. Buddies.

  3. the magician-
    Spoiler

lazy, likes sweets, has a scary face. Joins her magic circle manipulation club so he can be lazy and she can get the funding to pocket. They end up accidentaly working hard and inventing new magic. Later he finds out abt her fake alter ego and turned out to be a huge fan. Very sweet interactions where he actually starts to take care of her (unique fr literaly anyone in her life since she has to constantly be the adult, even w her parents)

    [collapse]
  4. the criminal-
    Spoiler

heir of a merchant group w shifty underworld leanings, he hires her on a temp basis to help him eliminate (?) the higher ups so he can take over. He has that same emotionless deadeye thing she has, only shes desperately trying to hold things together, while he wants to destroy things (they kno their goals dont allign but choose to hang out under truce)

Omg. The novel is amazing. It does not revolve around only romance and the female lead saving herself. The female lead is not an OP. She gains what she has through her hardwork. It id not your normal transmigrating novel. Each of the characters have their own backstories. And the male leads do not start liking shushu (fl) immediately.

The characters have their own development and start liking FL gradually. It is not love at first sight.

FL is a hardworking person who in her past life struggled because of her parents'death... more>> and their company became bankrupt and died unwittingly. Thus in this life she wanted to be a female knight that could receive much money.

I really really recommend to read this novel. The translations are also amazing.💜😳

There are 4 male leads:- Cory with a pair of scary eyes. Hyelli the Prince. Yuves the leader of the guide. And Swanhaden /Swan the heir of the Blanche Duke.

In this novel the original FL that is Hestia is not a white lotus b*tch or backstabber (until now). She loves Shuraina (Shushu) our FL and is quite obsessed with her. She doesn't want shushu to date others without her consent.

Spoiler

1). Swan loves Shuraina because she helped him and healed him when he was under the process of having great white (healing) magic skills even when he was cold to her at first but later started opening up to her. He's my fav ML so far. He had to seal shushu's memory because it was a secret of the Blanche's. He's such a cutie pie and a tsundere🖤🖤💜

2). Cory is a scary green eyed boy whom everyone is scared of but shushu approaches him and they form a club together. He is very caring towards shushu and whenever she's sad, he never goes beyond the boundaries to ask her the reason but silently comforts her. He loves snacks and sleeping and has a bunch of vegetable blankets. And he is an amazing magician and a huge fan of shushu because of her magic inventions.

3). Yves contracts shushu for his revenge on the guild. (Shushu is a great renowned magician but very few people know it as magic was the same as maths in her previous world.) He is touchy and loves to be clingy. He even has a dog named shushu with same orange fur as the fl's hair colour.

4). He is the prince of the kingdom and a swordsman student just like fl. He is a very good swordsman and had lost his sword to shushu when they both were on their way to the academy and were unacquainted. He did not like shushu at first but ultimately they became friends.

[collapse]

The male leads and female lead are a very good group of caring friends🖤🖤🖤.

Overall the character development is great and there are mannyyyy twists and turns😅 but this is a must read novel. All the characters are cuties😳🖤🖤 but yeah some are just b*tches just like Eric.

I reallly recommend it to the readers.🖤🖤🖤 Enjoy reading it with amazingly translated chapters. <<less

I've been enjoying this immensely. To my surprise, all of the characters are actually likable, even the original heroine and the one that in any other story would be an obsessive yandere.

The MC, Shuraina, is a treat. Because her best friend is so much prettier and girlier, she basically gave up on romance and just decided to devote herself to a stable career and began pursuing it from an early age. Her goal is to be a magic knight because of all the job perks and starts working on both... more>> magic and swordsmanship as a result. However, while she starts out above the rest of the cast, she settles pretty comfortably into a sort of jack of all trades position where she's perfectly capable of taking care of herself, but unable to beat any one of her friends at their specialty. Hylli is a better duelist, Cory is better at magic, Yves does better with business and Swan... is a giant muffin and you can't really compare the two so easily. It lets her both be good and doesn't make her seem overpowered. She also has clear flaws that do have realistic consequences, though never ones that seem insurmountable.

The OG heroine, Hestia, seems to have nothing going for her but a pretty face and keeps nagging at the MC to be girlier since Shushu is always training or studying and never takes care of her appearance, which leaves her quite unpopular with boys who don't bother to get to know her. However, the MC can tell that she actually has her own hidden interests and doesn't actually believe what she's trying to tell her. Instead, she wants Shushu to reject what she's saying because she worships her BFF and wants her to fulfill her own dreams. However, the MC isn't that ambitious and encourages her to pursue her own talents and behave more honestly. And she does, and it's great. One thing I particularly liked is that the MC, despite her pretty perfect girl act, was actually doing something pretty shitty to the MC when they were younger, which has formed her current negative personality into what it is. However, she knows it's bad and is conflicted because she didn't mean for things to get that bad and is extremely upset with herself for having caused a certain problem that I won't get into unspoilered.

Meanwhile, the MLs are actually all enjoyable. The crown prince starts off bratty and selfish but is rather seamlessly nudged into being more of a sparring partner. The marquis' son is an entirely supportive and affectionate friend. The mysterious and sneaky playboy looking type quietly cleans up his act when he realizes he can't let his past dictate his future and the psychopath in training not only grows obsessed with the MC, but actually strives to better himself as a person so she won't hate him. With mixed results, but he's actually trying, which I love. Best of all, despite all of them being very into her, especially Hestia and Swan, they're willing to respect her choices even when it interferes with their own desires because they respect her. And yet they stay protective and make sure she doesn't get hurt. I would be satisfied with her ending up with any of them. The supporting cast is also pretty solid, though they don't get much time to shine since Shushu doesn't really care much about people outside her close friend group.

There are a few minor flaws that I think would maybe deserve dropping off about half a star, but for the most part this is one of the most consistently enjoyable novels I've read in a few months or even a year or so, especially given that it's 140+ chapters of reasonable length in. <<less

This is the best story I've read on NU. The friends are FRIENDS. They tease one another, and they support one another. I love that Hestia and our protagonist, Shushu, are such good friends. Normally in these stories, the beautiful former female lead is secretly evil or something like that. In this story, she's an awesome friend and reading about their friendship makes me get a lil choked up sometimes. It's so amazing to have someone who is just on your side, rain or shine, and I'm so glad this... more>> story shows what real friendship is like - not just the benefits of it, either - the parts where your friend has to kick you in the bu*t sometimes too. <<less

Cries, I'm very thankful to the TLtor who pick this up!💖

The characters have naive, strong, and eccentric sides to them, very interesting and good children growth going there. Then when the moments MLs open up and smile, just, so so precious and heartwarming like how boys their age should be~ instead of fuqed up sh*t like how the novel MLs became as they goes through traumatizing experiences alone. MC's goal is to have a stable job and save her house from financial crisis so she've been working hard towards that goal and one way or the other got acquainted with the male leads along the way. The young heroine did not get caught up with some inconsequential hairy boys that one by one fell in love at 1st sight with her, instead the boys later got acquainted to the Ojakgyo, then attracted to MC who is pragmatic and capable even with her lacks of youthful enthusiasm and dead fish eyes (tbh very sincere and good friend), gradually their first love stopped there before they've properly blossomed.

As for the heroine, she doesn't seem to be interested in some prince charming, MC lectures about independency and modern women may have influenced her quite a bit that she's more inclined to stay with MC rather than finding her love and marriage partner. As everyone is still in their puberty anyway.

The relationship btw MC and MLs overall is that of friendship, yah so I supposed they'll realize the big friend-zone they're in when they recognizes their feelings not far off in the future, lol my condolences.

Spoiler

Ps. I'm caught btw who to cheer her with btw the merchant, magician, and healer. When they start caring for MC in their own ways it is just so so sweet! (*/ω\*).

I was actually expecting it to be your usual isekai, but after reading it I realized how wrong I was. All the characters are lovable and aren’t two dimensional. Each one of them has a back story as to why they became attached to Shushu and what made them darken in the original plot line. Not only that, there seems to be more to it than what meets the eye as to why Shuraina was summoned into their world.

I’m all in for a reverse harem ending adding Hestia HAHAHAHA but... more>> personally at this point all my stocks are invested on Swan. I mean this guys is just so uwu and a total simp for Shushu and I love it. Overall, all the male leads are lovable dorks and Hestia is an adorable OG female lead with a Shushu complex. I also love the fact that they still respect Shuraina’s boundaries and decisions despite being quite overprotective of her. <<less
