Years later, he ascends again–only to be banished again a few minutes after his ascension.

Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task as a god thrice ascended, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules over the ghosts and terrifies the Heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

It took me over a year to read a second MXTX novel. Scum Villain's Self Saving System was what got me into danmei from my formerly restricted to yaoi manga world and it was a turning point in my reading life. I can't express how much I love SVSSS and I was hesitant to read another MXTX novel because I worried if it would live up to its predecessor. I am happy to say, MXTX deserves all the love and respect they have in this community! I've read an actual... more>> ton or danmei by now and there is something very special to how their novels are written- you really fall not only in love with the characters but the world setting! Other reviews will tell you more details about the story itself. The warnings about the even numbered books isn't there lightly. Book 2 can be classified as knives to the heart while book 4 are swords. That one chapter from book 4 in particular is enough to drive me to tears just thinking about it! Honestly why I'd recommend SVSSS as an entry point for this author. That has more humor (there are funny moments here, don't get me wrong though) and is more light hearted than HOB. This one requires you to be able to get through some inhuman levels of suffering. You earn your happy ending! That payoff is sweet though- it's in many ways more "complete" than SVSSS. You feel like you've gotten appropriate canonical endings for everyone. The fanfiction minded may not be as inspired, but that also shows an evolution in the author's writing ability to wrap things up! Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are the definition of soulmates- it's worth pushing through the angst for the fluff lovers (I promise!) and plenty of plot and character depth for those just wanting to deep dive into an actual novel. Maybe it wont take me years to complete the trilogy this time! Haha! <<less

I don't know what to say, this is my first time writing a review. I love this story so much the character development and the genuine love between the two main characters.

I want to have amnesia so I can reread without knowing what happens, this is truly a masterpiece.

I recommend it if you want to go through a rollercoaster of emotions, you want to laugh, cry. Cringe and everything else.

I love hualian so much

This Novel is one of The best Novel in my list. MXTX is really an awesome author all her novels is so good. Why is this Novel is good? First, it has a good plot line, you can find the comedy scenes, the fluffy scenes and the sad scenes. Second, if you don't like the novel that have many smut scenes then this Novel will suit you. Last go to read it quickly if you don't read it before and watch the anime adoption.

Rating: 5/5- Wow! This was so wonderful!

One of my absolute favorite MCs and MLs. The MC stood out the most for me. I think if I ever wished to strive for a personality type, this MC would be my ideal.

I think the concept of living and dying for someone was the crux of this plot and Hua Cheng is pretty much an outstanding ML in all senses. I cried at the points of discovering how deep Hua Chang’s love was but I also sobbed at how selfless Xie Lan was... more>> as both a man and God that had risen and fallen so many times.

Overall I wished that the main characters had more interactions, but I thoroughly enjoyed the main plot of this story and the world that it sucks you into.

In my opinion, this is the author’s best work and these two characters are the most appealing and well defined characters out of all the BLs I’ve read thus far. <<less

4.0/5.0 Stars

From reading its synopsis, I had a feeling this would be my favorite of MXTX's three novels. Was I right? Yes, absolutely! However, this novel wasn't the five-star glowing book that I thought it would be. As much as I love this novel, there are still faults which make me lower its score to a 4. But if you're just perusing reviews quickly and not interested in my full thoughts, I would say give this novel a read!

Getting into the nitty-gritty part of the review, I want to talk... more>> about the glowing parts of this novel. The parts that make this novel as mesmerizing as Xie Lian's third ascension. That begins of course with our god himself! Xie Lian is a kind-hearted, but ultimately flawed individual. In his 800 years of life, he's gone through immense pain and trauma which have never fully healed. The novel has multiple flashbacks detailing his early life before and after godhood. These parts are heart-wrenching to read. The psychological and physical torment that Xie Lian goes through is harrowing. While he still pushes through it all, he never fully heals from it and I appreciate MXTX showing that in this novel. It makes Xie Lian a realistic and tragic character. Thankfully, this story does have a happy-ending for him which he wholeheartedly deserves.

Another strength of this novel is the richness of its side-characters' personalities. The Wind Master is one of my favorites in particular. Their story is a surprise which I won't be spoiling in this review. Pei Ming is also a delight to have in scenes and is our HuaLian advocate in-universe! Besides characters, I also really enjoyed several of the plot-twists in the novel. There is one in particular in Book Three which was incredibly well-done.

But now... I must address the negative aspects to this novel.

I would say one of the main faults with this story is how several characters with plot significance in one arc disappear for the rest of the novel and then reappear quickly at the end with no solid conclusion to their story.
Spoiler

This is especially true for He Xuan and Shi Qingxuan.

[collapse]

The main villain is also somewhat interesting, but overall they aren't very memorable in my mind. This novel also contains very glaring pacing issues. There are parts which fly by faster than Hua Cheng's scimitar and other scenes which drag for far too long. I also want to mention there is a sub-plot that was added which was incredibly superfluous--
Spoiler

The whole Mu Qing and Cuo Cuo connection was not only confusing but also quite unnecessary for the novel.

[collapse]

My biggest gripe with this novel, however--as much I hate to admit--is Hua Cheng. I wanted to love his character. Desperately. But in the end, I couldn't really resonate with him whatsoever. His whole personality is centered around Xie Lian. I was really hoping throughout the novel that he'd receive a complex backstory and his character depth would be explored. But sadly, that backstory is quite underwhelming and his character is mostly a puppet serving Xie Lian. Whilst I do like Hua Cheng's chemistry with Xie Lian, I ultimately prefer Xie Lian overall as a character. He is much more well-rounded and flawed than Hua Cheng.

Overall, this work is memorable and fun. Xie Lian's story and character are the true heart of this novel. His story will stick with me for a long time. I would say for Xie Lian's story alone this novel is worth reading. Don't expect this to be the masterpiece people are proclaiming it to be. It is a flawed, but gratifying read. I'd say give this novel a shot and see if it's to your taste. <<less

It's hard not to compare Tian Guan to MDZS even though the stories are indeed different and the author wanted to separate the two. I think the author worried that people who enjoyed MDZS would go into TGCF with way too high expectations, but I actually found TGCF to be more charming that MDZS. This is despite what I think are some significant shortcomings haha.

First, the novel is a little clunky. It's super long and the transition between arcs feels really sudden. At the end of the series the author... more>> tries to tie everything together by saying it was all planned by the big baddie, which I felt kinda iffy about. I actually really liked the antagonist and their relationship to the Xie Lian, but some of the details about how the antagonist pushed the MC fell a little flat. You can compare it to MDZS, where there was also multiple people pushing the MC towards their goals by setting up various traps for him throughout his journey. I think this worked a little bit better in MDZS because there were less people involved. This brings me to the second shortcoming of TGCF, which is the hugggeee cast. Actually, a lot of the side characters were very loveable and made the novel more interesting, but since there was just so many characters it was hard to get interested in all of them. It felt more believable for the antagonist in MDZS to be controlling everything and laying down traps, but in TGCF, there are so many characters and so many factors, it's hard to believe that the antagonist controlled everything and it came across as a little cheesy when it was insinuated they were behind everything. I think the large cast might also be one of the reasons why the transitions felt so clunky, and I think it was difficult for the author to tie up the many loose ends for the side characters.

I actually rated this novel pretty high so if anyone is reading this they might be confused because I started out with the shortcomings, but I love this novel!

There are three things about this novel that really hooked me in and got me invested in this series for so long. First, the protagonist. I think Xie Lian has so much depth. It's kind of funny when other readers find that he lacks substance and is sort of shallow, because I think the opposite. In the present, he definitely gives off this feeling of being selfless, maybe to the point of boring. But in the books covering his past, it is exceptionally clear that he has never been perfect and his experience from being someone of high status to a nobody makes him a really interesting character. In their postscript, MXTX mentions that this story is about "gentleness, dreams, something never to be given up on...". I think Xie Lian's story through past and present is a journey of how he struggles to maintain his dream of saving the common people. His struggle to uphold his values, his dreams and beliefs, I think gives him depth and makes him a character worth reading about. The second thing I love about the series is the world building. It may be that I am not really that familiar with xianxia, but the imagery and the various settings were really beautifully written. MDZS had several settings as well, but not as expansive or detailed as TGCF. So I think MXTX was successful in writing an adventure series, what with the numerous scene changes. The third and probably most captivating aspect of the series is the romance. For some reason the couple seems to be a bit controversial and I sometimes do think there are parts that could've been written better to emphasize the romance but I think as a whole, the ML and MC had a really beautiful relationship. Both the MC and ML had very difficult and painful pasts, so I feel like the simpleness of how they fell in love is refreshing and justified. I could go on about the numerous romantic scenes in the books but I will say that the gentleness of the ML towards the MC and their love that transcends time really solidified the romance. The most romantic dialogue will linger in your mind even after finishing.

And so, these three things made the novel so great for me! <<less

someone said xie lian is literally hua cheng’s religion and I 100% agree with them.

i had a hard time moving on from this book, because it was one of the best I've seen. It was beautifully written, the worldbuilding is great, and it has plot twists that actually makes me go back to look for any easter eggs between the lines. Nearly every characters in this book has a share of their dirty laundry. The main characters are not without flaws, but for me it seems like when they are... more>> together, they balanced each other out, and you know what? They might be one of those whose relationship are quite healthy. Boundaries are respected, lines are not crossed, and consent!!

will probably still watch the dongua and read the manhua although I've finished this lol <<less

At first I felt embarrassed and ashamed because of the MC XD It was really awkward in each chapter but soon from second-hand embarrassment I found him funny instead. The author really doesn't hold back on making a character suffer lmfao.

Anyways, I love it! It's really nice. The characters are well-written and I love how there's lots of mysteries there and how our Xie Lian is like an old, innocent grandpa HHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

Anyways, the pacing is great, the characters are funny, and the plot is great. I definitely recommend reading it.

THIS RIVIEW HAS SMALL SPOILERS !!

Spoiler

i have read all of mxtx works and I am a fan of all of her works, but I can say this one is my favorite, tbh the best danmei I ever read. Each character have their own story to tell. Even being heavenly official it seems that they're not without a dark or dirty past and their own flaws. There is so much details to the story you can almost imagine the scenes and I love that.

Xie Lian and his personality albeit suffering so much is so innocent and pure even knowing the world with all the pain he still sees hope in smallest things and loves humanity despite its ugliness. When you know as you know him reading the book despite his flaws you will feel the pain that he is so used to feeling, just like Hua Cheng you will be as protective of him.

Hua Cheng on the other hand surprises me. He almost died, but being saved by Xie Lian and due to his words making him the meaning of his life, his life was so hard it makes me cry as much as Xie Lian's. To not die for your beloved, being there for him at his worst and yet not judging but understanding. Some might call it stalking and maybe it is but he never wished to be acknowledged rather protect him in secret and become most powerful just to protect the one he loves but yet rather than punishing the ones who made Xie Lian suffer he never harmed the innocent or did something wrong. And he tells the most romantic lines that wiill make your heart flutter as much as Xie Lian. The angst in this novel is so painful I had to keep the book aside to cry for 10 mins straight

all in all must read highly recommended from mxtx works !!

I love all author’s novel. Some people maybe said that this one is really slow and the plot unnecessary. But for me, I love how she try to broad her writing by introduce us to bigger plot, and story behind characters. As usual, her MC and ML are really likeable. And I love how all her MC + ML is different with each novel. The similarity between each couple is they are smart. Thats why we love her work. But their personality is different.

WWX and LWJ are the funny cheerful... more>> MC that coloring ML’s life. Thats how LWJ fall in love with him. WWX add colors to LWJ life. LWJ try to deny his feeling, but in the end he realize he only want to live together with WWX despite of the “man x man” taboo relationship, after he lose WWX in the 1st time. And how LWJ minimalist words but always show enormous “loving” act towards WWX that makes us all sighing while fangirling towards this couple.

SSQ and LB are the master disciple couple. LB always feel rejected by everyone, and lonely in the end. But SSQ save him, teach him, trust him. SSQ always encourage him, appreciate him, and gentle towards him. He’s the one that LB feels giving him unconditional affection. Thats how he adore and fall in love towards SSQ. And how a cruel half demon become a crybaby and cute cute boy in front of his shizun, is what makes us all screaming and giggling while read SVSS.

XL and HC in this novel, is savior protector couple. HC adores.. No, adoration is a simple word to describe his act towards XL. Worship? XL is everything to HC, like he said, XL is the reason HC existed. If XL is gone, there’s no reason to HC exist anymore. And just like his words, his most painful experience is how you saw your beloved ridicule and trampled but you can’t do anything. Both of them are hurts beyond words, but they manage to survive and getting strong by their own. For people to say XL is abused and too naive beyond words, have to read until book 4 where XL live after his 1st banishment. Wow.. I cried a lot in this part. And then we realized, XL is not naive, nor too kind. But he’s strong, really strong. He manage to stay true, and live his life to the fullest. And how we see this pure HC protected by the devilish HC in a sweet fluffy way, is how we rolling on the floor while read this masterpiece.

All this author works is masterpiece! <<less

It's an amazing story, with amazing characters and very good development.

For me, it is one of the best cultivation novels that I have read.

The MC is so strong and kind that made me wish he was my friend so I could talk to him and listen to his stories (he lived for more than eight hundred years, he passed through a lot and knows a lot).

The villain really scared the sh*t out of me.. I had nightmares -.- (Because I imagined myself in Xie Lian shoes too much)
I cried many times too, more than I thought I could while reading a novel.
Waiting for the donghua now *-* sounds promising edit:The donghua is out and its AMAZING!!

(As you can see, I really loved it and if you liked MDZS or its style/genre you will love this one too)

As usual, MXTX's novel was very good. Very, very, good.

It's not really like the average cultivation novel, which was a nice change of pace. I actually really love this CP. Like just the idea of it is just sooo good. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just praise everything. The plot was smooth, but I really had to trudge through the flashback books. They were so... realistic. Like how life goes up and down, the plot wasn't just on a positively upward trend. I love that the characters... more>> changed throughout time, which sometimes just doesn't happen.

I wanted more between the couple as I read, but as with all of this author's books, they end up satisfying me anyway. This book just balances plot and romance so well. If you're reading reviews to see whether you should read it, just read it. It's good. <<less

This is my first Chinese LN, I'm quite new to the cultivation stuff, but I wasn't confused while reading this. Everything was explained smoothly. I actually got to read the Manhua first, and it gave me the visual concept of it's world and characters. The flow of the story is smooth and everything connects. The comedy is fluid. I hope to read other LNs like this again

9/10 would recommend this read!

Don't go into this novel expecting it to be the same as Mo Dao Zu Shi.

Mo Dao Zhi shi is Mo Dao Zu Shi and Heaven Official's Blessing is Heaven Official's Blessing.

They may be written by the same author but they are 2 separate entities. The only thing similar would be that they both go into flashback mode for a good while before going back to the present.

  • Heaven Official's Blessing was my first BL novel that I started reading back in October, 2019 and took a long break from it. Then during this lockdown period that would be two months ago I finished reading the whole novel. I came to know about this novel from MZDS (I watched the anime ver

of MDZS at that time and came to know it was adopted from novel) as they share they same author. I firstly read the Manhua and totally fell in love with the art and the story was interesting.

The story at the first few chapters are a little confusing and boring as you don't understand a lot of things but once you start getting to know every characters you will love the story. For those who have just started reading the novel, there is a lot

    of plot twists.

I really loved how the plot progressed. From knowing the background of Xie Lian to

  • The relationship between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng is really cute. I love it when they make out in public like they are the only one there. The devotion Hua Cheng

has towards Xie Lian is really precious.

My review was not that good. But I must tell those readers who are in the verge of dropping this novel that "Don't drop it!!!" Read it till the end. You will surely love it.

There are not papapa scenes in the novel but there are hints of it in the extras and it's really funny (the first extra)

Anyways I really really love Heaven official's blessing. I am eagerly waiting for the donghua to release and the manhua to update (The artist of the manhua is so talented, his/her drawings are so pretty that I want to be her disciple)

Therefore finally in the end of this not so helpful review, I want to say that it's one of the best BL novel you will ever read. So keep on reading it until you finish it.

This has to be my favourite novel of MXTX closely beating MDZS.

The story is well written that challenges the reader's intuition and the charcaters are so deep with personality that it makes you instantly attracted.

There was not a moment where I was able to guess what the next plot point was going to be. It grasps your attention like no other book and the translation is splendid.

The schemes and characters are so well written that you will commend the author's thinking I was never able to figure out what the... more>> hell was happening.

The ultimate BOSS was also a surprise to me - A truly invigorating novel.

The character development is also well written You understand the personality and actions of every character.

Xie Lian's pain, Mu Cheng's attitude, Hua Cheng's mysteriousness - Every character has their own personality and their values which is implied clearly without foreshadowing anyone or anything else.

Book 2 and Book 4 made me tear up especially book 4 - When you read what Xie Lian has went through you will truly understand the concept of the novel and the character and his actions.

This is a major plot driven book and I suggest everyone to read it because there is no other book like this.

I commend the author and the translators for making this book and also being able to read it. <<less

Spanning across 800 years, it is first and foremost, a tale of friendship, devotion and love.

Xie Lian is a disgraced god. His lot in life is misfortune - from being unable to save his country from war and plague, to losing everything he ever owned - he's cursed as the bringer of bad luck. His friends gave up on him, his devotees deserted him, his temples burnt down and desecrated.

But he is also a god with good intentions - he wanted to save the common folk. And this has earned... more>> him a friend in the most unlikely person of the immortal realm - the Ghost King, Crimson Rain Seeking Flower.

However his friendship goes beyond the common definition, for as threads slowly start unravelling on the story behind Xie Lian's misfortune filled life, and secrets are unearthed - there is a terrible truth to be uncovered.

In short, I fell in LOVE with this story, its well written main characters, the side characters with their own beautiful story arcs and the slowly developing relationship between former Crown Prince Xie Lian and the Ghost King Hua Cheng.

When people gush about how this couple literally "invented" love, they're right!! The amount of pure devotion and care shown between these characters is heart wrenching and worth reading every page for - then rereading once more when clues fall into place and you realise that the one insignificant detail from chapter 5 is a BIG plot point.

It's a fully translated novel (into English) that can be accessed online, so GO READ IT. <<less
