This author has a way of writing warm and mostly light and pleasant stories with couples that have a heartwarming connection.

Which is why it became increasingly frustrating to me that in this story they ALSO persisted with a really unpleasant component of the ML being wilful and domineering and the MC not always liking it but thinking it was natural and acceptable because he's the emperor. As in, the tired old cliche of the ML not liking something so "punishing" the MC in bed all night. MC just accepts his... more>> punishment because he is in love and the other guy is (WAS) the emperor so he's justified in doing what he wants.

And I think this aspect of never moving beyond the relationships of the past is what dragged the story down for me. It is otherwise a fairly standard family power struggle dog blood reincarnation story that actually has a fair bit of charm.

However, none of the small group of characters who remember their past life are able move beyond their old identities (except his little brother a tiny bit). This is a story about an emperor, his consort and his retainers continuing these identities and relationships but in a modern setting. The retainers still kowtow and beg for punishment if they think they've displeased the ML, the ML still makes unreasonable demands of the MC (from doing his homework for him or assisting him in his work to bed-related things) and the MC accepts it. I just really don't enjoy that domineering attitude in an ML nor generally in a man of modern times. Others served him loyally in their past lives and, even if they are still attached to him and want to work for him again, they should no longer be treated as inferior humans, but equals who have made the decision to support the ML and MC, which should be valued and respected, not taken for granted.

I would have enjoyed instead seeing all the characters find new purposes in their modern lives, now they are no longer tied to ancient court life, even if they were still allies/supporters of the main couple, and main couple giving the same support in return.

What kept me going for a lot of the story was what WAS good about the ML. He does "grow" in terms of how he communicates, expresses his feelings and considers the MC, and we actually get lots of really cute or sweet moments. It's just that he never uses that growth to question whether he maybe shouldn't EVER boss his love around. He goes from a totally overbearing emperor to a... less overbearing oligarch. And I just found it increasingly hard to see that he never stopped that behaviour, no matter how well he treated the MC most of the time (and that the MC always allowed it).

...

As for the rest, you will get a lot of the standard plotlines, character types and attitudes that are really common for stories like these, so how much you can enjoy or tolerate scheming mistresses, power-grabbing uncles, everybody swooning over the looks and temperaments of the MC and ML etc. etc. will determine how critical you are of the story. I did like that the story wasn't as painfully repetitive in having totally s*upid relatives coming back again and again no matter how often they're slapped down. While one s*upid pair do persist, we also get some antagonists intelligent enough to have some business power and try to be clever (of course, not super clever, because we need the MC and ML to seem smarter, but not all the antagonists are blatantly inane). My bottom line tends to be the treatment and judgment of female villains - they are truly despicable in this story, but I still don't like seeing a man retaliate by slapping them, or the public suddenly condemn someone's whole character and label them a prostitute because it's discovered they've had multiple abortions. Meh.

...

Chinese webnovels of this style tend to like to make sweeping generalisations "all men like..." or "the women were only interested in..." or "the Japanese look down on...." etc. and in this story, it becomes more prominent once the main characters are in the US. I notice that a lot of American readers found this tendency for mindless generalisations particularly difficult to take, as well as the unnecessary mentions of people's ethnicity/appearance in negatively stereotyped roles (e.g. the more strong or thuggish characters tending to be specifically described as black). It's not confined to negatives, there are mentions of Americans being worse at certain things but other times being better than Chinese at things, or Chinese people being inferior in certain characteristics (or at least not perceived as impressive in certain aspects to outsiders). Novels like this are worse for this kind of thing, but it's pretty common in Asian stories generally for Westerners, and particularly Americans, to be characters that emphasise perceived differences from Asian characters often (more outgoing, perhaps more arrogant, more progressive etc.). These problematic attitudes definitely appear in reverse in Westerners' portrayals of Asians, but in a story like this it won't be subtle, and that definitely drags the quality of the story down. I tend to laugh at the misconceptions about Westerners generally, but this one might be a bit much if it's your own country that's being described in this story.

...

I'm honestly not sure how to judge this story... I think 3/5 is a reasonable reflection of how much there is about the writing style, the sense of connection between the main couple, the warm moments and overall ease of reading that kept me going. On the other hand, I definitely can't give it more than that, as the flaws that I found especially hard to deal with persisted throughout the story and soured my satisfaction of the ending. <<less

Read the raws. The CP is really cute and sweet, and the historical>modern transmigration is refreshing to read. Their reunion in highschool and their ensuing highschool life is fluff and precious.

That's where the novel should've stopped.

There are tr*shy novels and then there are tr*sh novels. Authors who want to write about subjects outside their comfort zones should be encouraged, but this author obviously doesn't care to hone their craft and is only pulling garbage out of their ass. I enjoy tr*shy novels, but this novel is pure garbage.

Most novels that... more>> bring their characters overseas to Europe or North America usually depict the setting with rose coloured lenses: extremely romantic and idealized. I can overlook this given the authors have never been to those places before. This author has obviously never set foot in the US given the many obviously wrong facts they were spewing, but over half of the story takes place in the US, and the amount of snide and derogatory commentary on American society is disgusting, and borderline racist. Nevermind bringing in Latino Americans too just to tr*sh them. All for the sake of glorifying the main characters? At the cost of degrading the entire novel???

You can't say Americans are bad at math, then say the companies on Wall Street are packed with brilliant minds from distinguished backgrounds, then turn around and bring MC who's dropped math in highschool to Wall Street to lead an entire "dumb" analyst team to success. What??

I won't call the author racist, since most of this is blatant ignorant stereotyping and weird glorification of China, but the author probably watched ONE bad Hollywood action movie and ran with it.

At the bare minimum, the disparaging comments aside, the straw that finally broke my back (and patience) is the complete lack of desire to give the work credibility. Let's talk about the kidnapping. MCML were kidnapped in Los Angeles. The thugs threw them onto a helicopter and flew for a few hours. Second uncle, who is the mastermind, called the thugs and told them to drag the MCML across the border to Brazil. BRAZIL. B R A Z I L. First, Mexico borders California. Second, hours won't get you past Mexico. And, wait for it, THEY NEVER MADE IT PAST THE BORDER WHEN THEY SHOULD'VE, given how close LA is to Mexico.

It gets better. LA, Socal is: A DESERT. We have SX strolling through Hollywood praising its beautiful sceneries and how of course the movie studios are based there since it's so picturesque they can set up shots anywhere. HOLLYWOOD IS IN A BARREN DESERT. After MCML escaped their capture, they had to hike through HUMID JUNGLES overrun with poisonous insects and snakes, atop mountains with leopards. LEOPARDS. L E O P A R D S.

Let me remind y'all again that Southern California is: A VERY DRY DESERT.

For those unfamiliar with American geography, this is akin to saying Shanghai is a desert, that the Gobi Desert is next to Shanghai, and the Gobi Desert is a tropical rain forest. Baffled Jackie Chan. Jpg

The author obviously doesn't know what they're writing about and doesn't care to research anything, or even something as small as open up google maps. This is evident even when the characters aren't in the US; the author simply continues to pull bad stunts when writing situations that are obviously out of their depths, like how high end waiters and butlers behave and serve. (Also, the only butler school that exists in the WORLD is in the UK.)

Most things settle down once the characters are back in China, and the author sounds mostly credible again. Still, since OVER HALF of the novel is in a foreign setting, the fact that the author never bothered to even try, and is only meaninglessly putting down Americans only end up making the entire novel distasteful. I can laugh at a few stereotypes here and there, but an entire novel of willful ignorance is just sad. It's like listening to Boomer Karen make tone-deaf jokes for an entire novel. I'm not even American and I'm disgusted.

All that race thing aside, the underlying misogyny in how the author treats the females in the novel is obnoxious. I get misogyny is in our culture, I get this is a danmei novel, but there's really no need for the men to literally be slapping the women around, and there's def room for much stronger female roles.

I rage-finished the novel because I enjoyed the dynamic between the CP, but after this book I am blacklisting this author.

Misplaced review? Weirdly enough this is not where I originally placed this.

Spoiler

<<Originally for a danmei whose listing disappeared and I forgot the title>>

Really cute at the start.

Then it drags on after they get to college

And gets pretty racist at the overseas arc (many racist stereotypes and China praising in later chapters)

According to the novel: Americans are apparently shallow, petty, and pe*verted who are "bad at math compared to the Chinese". African-Americans (called simply "black man" here) deal drugs and are thug-like. Filipinos are mentioned as maids. The mixed-race uncle is the villain. Be ready for people be described as yellow, white, or black.

Also poor people are ALWAYS uncultured moneygrubbers without morals.

The sheer ignorance turned me off.

Not very well written/translated.

Ok, for one, was there really a need for two evil, s*upid, gold-digging wannabe stepmothers who are both actresses? They're basically the same person, except that one of them has an equally shitty daughter and the other has a history of repeated abortions (which is provocative shorthand to establish her as a terrible person you should hate, but unrealistic, misogynistic "abortion queen" trope aside, doesn't even make sense considering pregnancy causes changes to your body--including weight distribution and metabolism--that no actress could take on so casually over and over, but... more>> this story doesn't care about plausibility, or logic, or fair representation of women). Even if you don't agree that's gross sexism, you can't defend that as anything other than poor writing. The antagonists are brainless, the MC's dad is a spineless sl*t, the MC is an ~unintentional jerk~ due to ~cultural differences~ (but we're supposed to cheer for his "face-slapping" or whatever) but doesn't seem to be trying to learn or adjust to updated norms at all (honestly I don't blame the girls at his school or the people on the internet for the way they viewed him at all, the optics were bad son), and why does the ML keep making the MC do his homework for him? Is this reflective of how he conducted royal business in their previous life too? Do your own damn assignments, and be nicer to your baby brother who supported you and your love in your past life!

Reading the reviews below, it's racist too? What are the redeeming qualities here? <<less

I've finished the raw, and I really love it. It doesn't have too much drama or misunderstanding, so you can enjoy every single chapter and how their relationship getting better and better. Also, it doesn't drag out, Song Xiao and Emperor will meet quite early, idk if I feel that way because I read it in one go, but they definitely meet really early in the story.

Does the Emperor remember Song Xiao ?

Spoiler

Yep, Emperor also remember his past life, And we'll see it early. There's a lot of characters who also remember their past lives. Mostly them who's inside the hall at the time when the Emperor died. Emperor's eunuch remembers his past life too, though in modern time he's no longer an eunuch xDD he's more of a butler in modern time. There's also a dark wei who will protect the Emperor in modern time too, he actually also doing Emperor test paper if I understand mtl correctly xD Emperor's younger brother who ascended the throne after the emperor died will be there too, though he's still an infant <33 And a General.

I'm only reading through mtl and already enjoy it so much, so I'm sure that the translated chapters will be much more enjoyable <33 <<less

Firstly, the translator, baobaomei, and their team of editors from Chrysanthemum Garden, did such a fantastic job. Thank you so much for picking up this novel!

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I'm seeing a lot of negative comments about the xenophobia, racism, and blatant ignorance of life outside of their own country. Yes, it is a problem that the author should've researched more into. Clearly, they have not lived abroad before and have been potentially influenced by all the random rumours about Western and "foreigners." I'm laughing my a**... more>> off almost throughout the America arc. And that's just it though, I'm laughing at it. Yes, the novel does become "serious" with all the threats and family strife, but again, I'd treat this novel as a comedic piece. Not in a Saitama, One Punch Man or pun-riddled anime/manga way, but more so in a quirky Chinese danmei novel would be. There are way more serious novels out there that I could've read if I wanted to focus on more serious topics. At the end of the day, it's how you view the novel. If you acknowledge the topics are ongoing issues in society, great, now learn from it, and don't act like these flawed characters (characters are meant to be flawed. If you don't agree, go pick up literature analysis of how story characters should be constructed) would in this novel. Know that the message the author is portraying is wrong, and move on. If everyone has to tiptoe around sensitive topics, there'd be no creative liberty in writing. The overall tone and relationship b/w the MC and ML made the novel quite a good read. Not in my top 10, but not a terribad read that I'd drag it through the mud. I like how they resolve their misunderstandings, taking action on all the things they've regretted from their past, and loving each other even more than they did before.

Anyway, tl;dr enjoy this novel more for its fluffy and entertaining events rather than a societal commentary. Or just don't read it or drop it-- it'll save you a lot of grief. <<less

WARNING: If you cant stand MTL and bad translation please dont bother. The language really done my head in and I got awfully dizzy sometimes in deciphering what some sentences mean. Im thankful something is even there tho.

However, if you persevere you will be able to read about two cute ancient couples going forward in time and re-continuing their bubbly love. The ML gong is the standard super rich, super handsome, super controlling ML template however he really do cherish his shou and try to make up for what he... more>> think is his fault of the past life. The shou MC meanwhile also love the ML however he is naturally reserved and try his hardest to stand on his own two feet.

Their interactions are cute, and sometimes they are bothered by stinking females (in any standard BL novels, all females stink) however the lovey-doviness make up for it. ML is just too adorable in his quest to get back his partner sometimes its too s*upid its hilarious.

read this for a feel-good ride. <<less

I rarely rate a novel this low.

First, I must say that I review according to my own opinion, level of enjoyment, plot, and the author's way of storytelling.

I got curious of Yu Tang and Song Xiao's story because of I have amnesia, don't be noisy! Since I somehow like that story, after I finished reading, I jumped into here right away. The plot is really interesting and a little funny that I was more immersed reading this than I have Amnesia, Don't be Noisy! The CP here were perfect for... more>> each other, I really like their interaction with each other and also the side characters are also interesting. And also the translation (CG) is great!

BUT EVERYTHING CHANGED AT THE 2ND ARC

I may sound narrow minded but, my good impression about the story at the first chapters turned negative in an instant.

It's my first time to ever to read such a racist story and it's really disappointing. Even if I already braced myself from reading the reviews and saw the tag, even if I lowered my standards just to digest everything and also even if switched my open-mindedness to full power, I must say, I'M SORRY BUT I CAN'T BEAR TO CONTINUE TO READ THIS NOW... I FELT VERY UNCOMFORTABLE SPECIFICALLY AT THE U.S. ARC. Let me explain why I can't endure this level of racism. If the racist part is a character trait from a character in the story, that I can totally understand it, but hell no, it's the author who is racist here. Given on how the author badly described the other nationalities/countries just for the sake of uplifting the Chinese characters in the story, It will really give you a feeling to drop this. Since the author clearly did not research first about these stuffs, maybe it will be better if the author didn't name-drop other countries. It's really bad and it's not funny at all. It's a pity for such a good plot is ruined because of how racist a person can be.

Will I continue to read this? Yes, plot wise, it's not bad, so after I calm down, I will tone down my IQ a bit more before continue reading this.

I will update my review after I finish reading this. For now, I'll rate this 1 ⭐ because of discomfort this gave me.

If you're also an aspiring writer, please please please, don't imitate this way of writing, this won't bring you good results. And I also recommend learning world history first before reading this, this will save you a lot of trouble from the false information in the story.

PS. Again, this is my own opinion. I'm sorry if it looks exaggerated, but this is how I feel while reading. <<less

Edit: read "I have amnesia, don't be noisy" which shares the same universe and in which YT and SX appear as secondary couple. Preferred that novel to this one so do give it a try even if Stop Bothering me, Emperor isn't quite to your taste.

Original review: Pushed until chapter 85. Didn't appreciate how the author considers that autism is an illness that one just 'gets' and can get cured. Didn't like the racist undertones of the story later either. Can't stand how the ML is always so effing OP... more>> he can do anything and outsmart everyone just by magic & out of nowhere!!

Translation is good, just not a fan of the story. It is not my cup of tea but if you can get past all those points, then you might enjoy it. <<less

I actually enjoy this BL very much!!

Normally, I would only read BL manga and watch anime and for this novel, at first, I was only give it a test for 1 chapter but it seemed that I cannot stop looking forward to new translated everyday. I love the dry humor and that's it was not long-witted, directly clear to the point.

It's a pretty cute story of the male Empress and Emperor as they continue to care for each other and discover their feelings. It's decently written but towards the abroad arc, there are A LOT of american stereotypes and racism that makes it kind of a turn off to read and it did bring my evaluation of the work to drop. But it is a good option to read if you are in between novels.

cute in HS and then not so much when they get to America. It quickly becomes apparent that the author has no idea and did zero research, even when it comes to the basics (i.e. Drinking age is 21 not 18 and underage can't even get through the door of a bar, let alone drink). And since when is it not safe at night? People go out clubbing all the time and have no problems. Safety depends more on the area you are in but that's true in all countries.... more>> There was also lots of racism, elitism, xenophobia and the normal nationalist propaganda found in most other Chinese works set in a modern era though it's most noticeable in the middle while they're in America. Once they're back in China it calms down again.

as for the rest of the story; I like how they got together early on and sorted out their misunderstandings from the past but I feel like the author took the easy way out by making most of the trouble all about family conflict. Not that it doesn't happen IRL but life is so much more than just grandpa not liking that you have a boyfriend and relatives trying to steal your position. I expected something better since the beginning was very good, but I felt disappointed at the direction things took.

thank you to the translator. <<less

NOTE FOR GRAMMAR NAZIS: Chrysanthemum Garden is re-translating this so before giving this an unfair rating because of the earlier poor translation, give the story another chance because it's pretty nice. And the ML is a good guy w/c is a big plus.

The uke is very likable. Any kind of bishes never got to one-up our MC. He does not easily fall for tricks like those dumb Ukes you see everywhere. He is intelligent and has a good temperament. I can easily recommend this to anyone because of him. In... more>> every Isekai, my pet peeve is whenever the story leave big question marks of how they transmigrate to another world/time. One of my first danmei novels. Here to reread, so I'll write a detailed review once I'm done. This novel details the transcendent love of ancient lovers that meet again after a painful parting during their previous life. The author of the story does include many geographical discrepancies, misconceptions about America, and includes damaging stereotypes towards POC; this is important to keep in mind because I understand how it may be very sensitive to some. Putting aside the negatives, this is an absolutely masterful work, I can't recommend it enough!

The synopsis is misleading because the empress never thinks that the emperor is a bother.....

The MC and ML are in love with each other right from the start. In their previous life, due to palace rules and ancient culture, the MC never confessed. ML gets to know (in present life) that the empress also liked him and was happy with him. ML is a bit over bearing but totally nuts for the MC.... more>>

I hated ML when he broke the flute!

I thought ChuZhong will make an appearance but sadly that did not happen. I want a book for Anyi... My ship for MC's father with his company partner sunk.....

There are a few things that bugged me. For example, the author's blatant discrimination, the illogical description of MC's smartness, the OP ML, the completely unnecessary family drama and why a bunch of people have reincarnated?!

Ignore the s*upidness and just enjoy the main couple's cuteness.

This is not the first nor will be the last novel where the author is a racist.

P.S. Personally, I liked the ChuZhong story much more. <<less

It's me! And you'll probably see me in the review section of all the mediocre and like tr*shy novels lol! But here I am and let's talk. I am NOT going to talk about all the problems most reviewers talked about like racism, Xenophobia and whatnot. It's mentioned in most reviews so I'll talk only about the story. It's sorta cute..... but it's also very bland. I pushed till like the kidnapping part until I just had to write a review. The story is about an established relationship and I... more>> respect cuz most of the stories are about the pursuit of a relationship. The couple is kinda cute so I guess one might enjoy the book. Other than that the ML is wayyyyyy toooooooooo OP like way too OP. He can fix all the problems in a jiffy and doesn't have to struggle at all cuz he was the EmPerOr once. And apparently being the emperor means you are the smartest being in the world (Not that I'm saying that emperors are dumb, some of them are actually smart but I doubt that they were able to solve all the problems in a jiffy like Yu Tang can you what I mean?). Apart from that this story has a 4.1 rating so that's why I picked it up and I'm not disappointed but I'm not impressed either. I've just read better stuff.

ALSO....... So when I said I read till the kidnapping part I just wanted to point out... They were in LA. I was watching a vlog of LA where this like duo of friends had gone to LA for a vacation and they said that it was quite dry there. So now I just wanna say I have never in my whole life stepped foot in America so I had no clue about the geography but like after watching the vlog when I read the chapter I was confused. In the chapter, they ran through a Humid jungle with Leopards and the first thing I thought was "Huh? They are in LA but isn't LA like kinda dry? This is not adding up..." So with sister Goggle's help, I figured that yeah LA is kinda dry and doesn't have any kind of tropical forests....... So just putting it out there that someone didn't do their research. That's embarrassing like how can you write the geography of a place without even knowing anything about it? When you know that your book will be read by people from all places and walks of life how can you not put in the minimum effort in researching at least the geography? Other than that I won't be talking about anything else because when you read the other reviews you'll get a much better idea as to how the story is. I only write passionate reviews when I find a truly tr*shy novel that's just pulling on all my f*cking nerves. But this one isn't doing anything of that sort so the review is small and kinda half-hearted.

HAVE A GREAT DAY READERS!! <<less

4.5/5 for me.

I came here aftet reading "I Have Amnesia, Don't Be Noisy" and I must say that I really loved this novel. Translation is better than the previous one. Don't let the ratings stop you from reading this awesome novel. I think the reason why so many people gave low ratings was because of the previous translation which wasn't readable at all.

I really loved the novel. It was interesting to see a relationship, that was not about getting together, rather about reuniting with your loved ones. I liked that the main couple was supporting each other and not having brainless quarells.

Translation: in older reviews you can see a lot of criticism about the translation, but the new one done by Chrysanthemum Garden's Baobaomei is awesome, so don't worry about it. It's high quality with a lot of helping notes.

All I can say is, I loved it, I loved the characters and... more>> my only wish is that I could've heard more about Didi's thoughts. He was the most hilarious character I've seen in a long time <<less
