He ascended to the Heavens at a young age; however, due to unfortunate circumstances, was quickly banished back to the mortal realm. Years later, he ascends again–only to be banished again a few minutes after his ascension.

Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task as a god thrice ascended, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules over the ghosts and terrifies the Heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

This is my first novel from MXTX and while I do love the pairing, the story as a whole would be weak and slow until around Book 3 where there's some build up to the plot--even a side chara's arc was better than the first parts where they dealt with passing demons and the like, but it was disappointing that it was forgotten so easily. A big part of the reason why I stayed til the end was because of how I got attached to the charas/pairing rather than the... more>> plot.

  • The MC, Xie Lian, becomes pretty weak as a chara but seeing the flashbacks, I'd say it's understandable, so I don't hate him--in fact, I actually really like him. He starts off as an overconfident person that says things like he can save all the common people. During a time when he's at his worse, he starts encountering things he never would have encountered before as the spoiled prince of his country:
    Spoiler

humiliation, betrayal, extreme emotional and physical torture, and more.

    [collapse]
He may seem weak as a chara since he becomes a smiley-on-the-surface, empty-in-the-inside chara whose goal is too cliche, but it's clear that he's still affected by what he went through (honestly, I'm surprised he can still smile and try helping others). In the end, it wouldn't be wrong to say he got worn down from all those events and becomes the unbothered person he is, only mentally stronger.

    • While I can see why he ended up like that, it was disappointing that the MC, who's a very intelligent Martial God, often relied on Hua Cheng for help in some events like, "what do you think, Hua Cheng?" I would've preferred to see him show off his strength more in battle since it's spoken so highly of, but Hua Cheng would be there with his OP powers more often than not. Xie Lian is definitely strong and intelligent, but it doesn't seem like he had the chance to really show that off since OP Hua Cheng was always by his side.
  • Next, the ML, Hua Cheng. Hua Cheng has a deep obsession with Xie Lian and he genuinely wants the best for him. His chara centers around Xie Lian--if Xie Lian didn't exist, he wouldn't see a reason to exist either. He became OP to protect Xie Lian, especially after seeing the events that he went through in the past, and he's more affected by those events than Xie Lian. He even considers his inability to help during the time when Xie Lian was at his worse the "worst suffering in the world", which shows how much he cares for Xie Lian. He lives only for Xie Lian, cares only for Xie Lian, and only thinks about what's good for Xie Lian. Even his likes and dislikes are based off Xie Lian: he hates those who abandoned or hurt Xie Lian, he doesn't hate those who didn't do either to his beloved.
    Spoiler

Even the side charas were creeped out by his obsession that lasted for 800+ years.

    [collapse]
    • Despite being a character that centers wholly around Xie Lian, I still like him, especially how he's fake to others while sincere with Xie Lian. The way he devoted himself in trying to make himself the strongest and the richest so he could protect Xie Lian got me. Though I wish there was a bonus story to show Hua Cheng's point of view to add more to his character since we only hear about his backstory through the POV of Xie Lian or in a couple of paragraphs. While his strength is one of the things I like about him, it's also something that made it boring. He became too strong, and was able to solve things quite easily. Aside from being the ML, he was a chara that was there to wrap things up easily if things got too messy or were about to. The few times where he was unable to help Xie Lian were some of the parts I loved because things weren't able to be solved so easily, and seeing a bit of struggle was refreshing.
The romance was a huge part of the story as it was more focused on this aspect rather than the plot. It's quite simple with the "falling in love at first sight" trope on Hua Cheng's end,
Spoiler

along with losing hope in the world and having that one person restore it so you live for them.

[collapse]

Story-wise I prefer MDZS, but I personally liked HOB when it comes to romance because of how they supported each other, stayed with the other even after seeing them at their worst, and don't care about the "kind of them, as long as it's them", and they're one of my favorite pairs. They say really heart-touching things to each other that opens the other's eyes, and you can see how deeply they care for each other. Some of the character arcs were a bit boring since I wasn't able to get attached to the chara in so little time to really be invested in their arc. I wouldn't see much of their personality enough to get attached, and when I start getting attached, it would be toward the end or done completely and they're hardly heard of again. <<less

The backstories, characters, plot, and everything else is just perfect. It focuses on the plot and the fleshing out of characters and their backgrounds, their past, and also never loses focus on the main CP. The main CP shines very well but it never outshines the plot that the plot somehow becomes forgotten (like most bl novels) which is a very excellent balance.

10/10 and def my top 1 romance / action / fantasy / drama novel.

The story leans more on the uncovering of the past and as to what they... more>> came to be at the present. And I think it's a very beautiful and intricate way of showing how deep the characters really are. Everything is connected since the beginning and it just shows how much thought was put into it.

The main CP's love and story is just so *insert onion tears* touching and well-written (the translation was amazing!) and I like how the story also gives some highlight to the other characters. The interactions of the characters (esp main CP) is *insert chef's kiss*. Fate is really cruel but at the same time generous and beautiful.

A very very very absolute good read. Definitely a must-read! <<less

I won't talk about what I like about this novel, because there's plenty of praise already, and it does live to it, instead, I'll talk about some things I didn't like as nothing is perfect, If I could describe this novel bad side shortly, it'd be "hypocritic kindness with a tinge of madness" the MC has a twisted sense of kindness, the kind that would save a serial killer because he has a neighbor that would miss him, but shortly after the serial killer goes on a rampage and kills... more>> thousands. There's a certain character that almost ruins this whole book for me, imagine this situation:
Spoiler

"employee A" enters a company, he then goes on to recommend friend "B" of his to the company, "A" then rises within the company and doubts whether "B" would be able to do the same, "B" says OK and also rises in rank and gets even more success in said rank, "A" gets jealous and starts avoiding and bullying "B", but "B" doesn't realize "A" is tr*sh and tries to help him by getting a work opportunity with the boss for "A". In a fit "A" gets outraged because of his fragile pride being broken and harms "B", consequently losing his job because of it. After that "A" still thinks he is the victim and "B" has to apologize to him.

[collapse]
What's worse is that the MC takes "A" side and makes me really uncomfortable because of all the BS and because this character arch is present for a long while in the book. <<less

I finished this novel back in June and it's December but I still haven't gotten it out of my head. What was really interesting for me was the focus on many different characters and not just the main (I've read MDZS and I feel that this is a large contrast as it focused more on the leads life), so I grew attached to many of the side characters such as Pei Ming, Yushi Huang, Mu Qing and Feng Xin, and some others. Xie Lian, being a crown prince, it was... more>> understandable for him to be brought up spoiled but the person we first meet is somewhat humble and is ridiculed by the other Heavenly Officials most of the time. It was quite shocking to me at the start - but as we uncover Xie Lian's story we begin to understand his struggles and the challenges he faces.

I do agree that the backstory for Hua Cheng and Xie Lian was somewhat weak in the sense that they were strangers and only Hua Cheng had remembered their encounter. But that was only for their first meeting; their continuous encounters after that showed the dedication Hua Cheng had for Xie Lian,
Spoiler

even as a ghost wisp, being unable to save his beloved from being tortured.

[collapse]
Despite the weak initial encounter, I think this their relationship after meeting again was stronger. Xie Lian was so used to not having someone supporting him which made him rely on Hua Cheng and often made him wonder where Hua Cheng was - this was where Xie Lian begin having feelings for Hua Cheng. And I think that's beautiful. Moreso, this story didn't focus much on their first encounter but all the later encounters, on how Hua Cheng had been there with Xie Lian from the start up till now, supporting him.

This is a great story for anyone who wants to find the true meaning of 'forever'. <<less

This was probably one of the most beautiful novels I've ever read. The ML's devotion towards our MC really exceeded my expectations, and I did end up getting emotional towards the end. Although the romance came a little late, I honestly didn't mind because from the start, the MC and ML already fit like an old married couple. There were quite a few plot twists that I would have never guessed, which made the story all the more enjoyable. Although for some reason, I didn't cry for the ML's backstory,... more>> however I did so for the MC's. He tried helping his people, yet ended up being hurt instead. I could never relate to his suffering, but reading about his journey from his fall from grace brought out feelings of extreme indignation from me. All in all, this novel caused me to feel a number of emotions at the same time, and I truly enjoyed reading it. <<less

This is like the max amount of stars I can give, but I want to give so much more. This story embodies true love and devotion. This is honestly my favorite well-written, C-novel of all time.

The different encounters, I adventure with the characters. The comical, light heartened scenes, I laugh along. The painful moments, I can never forget. And most of all, the sheer devotion and interactions between the two main characters (XL and HC/SL), I cry as my heart aches because it's all just perfect.

I'll be honest that my... more>> first read-through, I became a little bored in the middle because some much information was presented about past events. I got lost and wasn't able to follow through. But, reaching the end when things and twists were brought to light, it completed my understanding and love for this novel.

I absolutely hate spoiling in reviews, because I know some people decide whether they should read or not based on these reviews, so I won't spoil with the specifics. I think one of the reasons why some people didn't enjoy this was because they would prefer more drawn out drama/misunderstandings or them just not understanding the theme of this work. But that's okay, because one read (or not even a completion) is not enough to take in what happened. So, you need to experience this masterpiece yourself, and I highly suggest you do.

I'm just thankful for the official merch and donghua and other adaptations for this! There's also a huge community for fans on Tw*tter for those having the post-read feels and want to continue with the journey.

Btw, I've become a total SIMP for San Lang. <<less

Oh my goodness. This story may seem like a long read, but if you're a fast reader, you can finish it in less than a week!

This story is AMAZING. It has several folktale elements, and if simplified enough, it seems to be like a fairy tale.

But Heaven Official's Blessing is so much more than that. I mean, try to find someone who'll love you even half as much as Hua Cheng loves Xie Lian.

There are no conflicts or misunderstandings between the main pairing, which makes the romance significantly easier to... more>> read but not any less meaning than MXTX's other two novels.

This is one of the beautifully written novels I've read. This is the first BL novel I finished reading and genuinely liked. It's not vulgar or whatever negative impression ppl have towards BL novels.

I like Xie Lian's story. Although it has a lot of suffering. I want to smack White No-Face so bad bec he's so delulu and mental. So jealous and obsessive. He inflicted so much grief and suffering not just to XL but to Xianle ppl in general. So absurd!

I am in awe of Hua Cheng's love. Honesty... more>> it took 800 years. I can't even begin to grasp the amount of patience and loyalty he have for him to wait that long. XL is indeed kind and pure hearted and that's what attracted HC. It was XL's non judgemental personality, never doubting ppl whom he don't believe to wrong him.

I enjoyed all of Mu Qing and Feng Xin's bickering although at some point they're freaking annoying and almost hinder opportunities bec of their centuries old grudge. I also kind of felt sad for Qi Rong and Guzi. I know Qi Rong is mental and super annoying but at 'that' moment everyone kind of realized that he genuinely (more of subconsciously, he keeps denying it out of reflex I think) cared (even a bit) for that child. And Guzi too : (

I ship Pei Ming and Lord Rain Master HAHAHAHHAHA

I love the comedy element of the story, it balance out the serious theme and scenes.

Honestly, I respect the deep loyalty and love Hua Cheng have for Xie Lian but that scene from the cave with Feng Xin and Mu Qing made sense to me. Having the two point it out like that creeped me out. That entire cave creeped me out.

Overall, I am more than satisfied with how it turned out. I find the 'essence of evil' being pointed out every time so funny HAHAHAHAH and that last part really hilarious.

Also, I find the flashbacks kind of a drag. I mostly skimmed my way out. It was informational but it took quite long. Not gonna lie, I was feeling impatient at the last arc and just wanna find out how it will end. <<less

I wish I could give this more stars and several ❤️❤️❤️❤️. This is (Obviously) my Favorite BL novel: the heart-breaking tragedy of Xie Lian, the comedy of the lovable side characters, the 800 years of devotion of San Lang. I’ve loved everything by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu so far, but this is her best, better than even The Founder of Diabolism. I think that says it all.

I love this novel, I have read the entire thing (took me around three days of constant reading) and I have to say it's a nice first read, and an excellent second read.

The author herself states that this is not MDZS, and another MDZS will never exist again which is indeed correct, TGCF is it's own story, it's own characters that is not comparable to MDZS. I realise this only now.

TGCF in itself, is slow. There are five books, books two and four being flashback books into our MC's past,... more>> book four is easily the best out of all the five as it captures the storyline and the chaos and calamity exceptionally well.

Now, the MC's. They are incredibly mature, meaning that there is never any conflict between the two. They have a great relationship with almost no angst between them. Hua Cheng has spent all the hundreds of years of his life loving Xie Lian.

This is deemed as a one in a million love, for Xie Lian is a one in a million guy.

In fact I really adore the romance between them. It is sweet like candy, and feels good to read. The way their lives interconnect is fantastic, and mesmerising. I always found myself wanting more and more.

I have actually edited this review after my second read and realisation. I compared it to MDZS far too much previously, when both works are so beautiful in their own that it is impossible to compare.

This is a fantastic read. It is a nice and long read, enjoyable and makes you really feel for poor Xie Lian and his rather tragic life. A love story of a guy who always tries his best yet fails, and a guy who is entirely devoted to him. This book makes me feel lonely if anything.

After the main story, there are the extra chapters. At first I was rather annoyed, saying to myself "why aren't there more chapters of their life?", but I realised that TGCF *is* about their life. Their life is concealed in the book perfectly, after the main story I'm sure our MC's will continue to cook bad food, pretend to like it, play around in the ghost realm and solve fun mysteries together. That in itself is perfect.

TGCF is an amazing read. It is a fantastic novel where you can actually feel characters come alive. It is so idyllically beautiful in its own right that it is not comparable to her other works, SVSSS and our comedic couple, MDZS and our nostalgic and tragic couple, for TGCF has two characters who simply have devoted eachother to one another. That is what this book needed to flow as well as it did. <<less

By far, the best novel I have ever read. Tgcf has the most beautifully written characters alongside the favoured demon x god trope, the complexity of the mc's emotions is just wow, mxtx portrays their feelings and thoughts like magic. What surprised me the most was that tgcf was reletively easily to follow, the flow of the story is absolutely beautiful. Yk sometimes u have trouble keeping up w all the historical part or the action part, but tgcf is completely on a different level, hell if I say tgcf... more>> is a once in a lifetime masterpiece.

Another important thing, , the level of intimacy you feel reading the words even when absolutely nothing is happening?? Will shock you. Tbh this was my first experience feeling THIS level of intimacy (literally by only a little s*xual tension) even after ive read countless novels and it was absolutely breathtaking.

You will not in the slightest be disappointed by this novel, from the taste of someone who loves angst and slow burns, this is your heaven good luck <<less

A slow burn in almost every aspect, sweet, not too dramatic, not overly-complicated but still interesting enough to keep you reading.

I wish the characters were a bit more complex, their flaws are not acknowledged enough.

Good mostly wholesome romance. Although personally I was put off by

I normally don't write reviews, since I consider myself as a ghost reader, but I'll make an exception haha!

I discovered this novel along with SVSSS, after reading MDZS. I told myself I'll finish this novel, and here I am.

I was also amazed that the rumors about Hua Cheng, like where he came from, what was his background before becoming Crimson Rain Sought A Flower was confirmed on Book 2 and 4. The rumor that he was a god and descended to reject immortality was actually true.

This is such a good book!

I've seen so many reviews criticising the lack of romance and I sit here wondering if we even read the same book. It was so cute and amazing! I cried, I laughed a lot, and I gushed over all the interactions between the 2 ML's.

The investigations, and etc. Are some of the best points of the book, and the characters were also very enjoyable.

Yes there's no s**, and I get some people don't like that, but the extras do kinda make up for it. I... more>> personally loved it exactly how it was because desite how much I love MXTX, her specific s** writing abilities just wouldn't have worked here (MY opinion, don't come at me). They do in MDZS because Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji give off the vibes necessary for it (I've never read SVSSS so can't use it as reference)

Give it a go, you honestly won't regret it!

And from someone who laughs in the face of trigger warnings, I can say this book made me dread seeing one, cause boy does she know how to write the dark stuff. I even liked it better that MDZS! <<less

Out of the 3 novels, I think this is my favorite setting. The ghost and heavenly setting is interesting. Rather than an action series, it feels like Detective Xielian going around solving all these mysterious events and deep rooted resentments around him while HuaCheng support him on the side. Compare to the other series, the author up brutal factors in some segments ie (body horror with human face disease, torture, disfigurement etc that happen in the plot)

The interactions between the main couple is adorable. HuaCheng is really my favorite... more>> male lead from his personality to design. The art STARember did for TCGF manhua makes him look incredibly handsome. Xielian is also so lovable. He put on a carefree personality but only because he has suffered alot that he no longer cares about being hurt. And you will sympathize with him... ALOT because the flashback segments continuously get sadder the more you see what happened to him as he went from a crown prince, to a fallen god. It might be triggering to some people with the

. It is not a tragedy but it does have many tragic events in them

Overall, I enjoy this series but if there's one thing I have to complain about, it is the author bad habit.

The author made it know she will only write one gay couple in her book. That is fine. However, it really seems like she went out of her way to completely destroy and screw up the lives of the characters so readers had nothing to cling to. It wouldn't be so annoying if there is a specific arc in the story regarding a certain ship many people like being completely destroyed and the party involve basically dissapeared after the event play out and only appear again in the last 10 min of the story just so the readers can be inform of the aftermath.

My problem is that that the end of that arc was extremely dramatic, and yet the author just let you experienced through the climax with all the emotions, pain and bitterness and then.... that's it. I completely understand that the event can't avoid being resolve in bloodshed, I just hate that the author couldn't conclude it without making it feel like there's still a dangling thread left behind.

There are also side characters that are interesting but never really received proper developments. There are only so many times you can see Xielian's 2 coughfriendsIguess, fight each other before you're sick of it. The arc with Lingwen was.... just not memorable. All they did was run around chasing. QiRong felt like he has potential to grow and gain some introspective with his "son" but he never went anywhere. I feel like the author focus alot on the lovey dovey relationships of the main than the side characters.

Despite how I like the couple, the dramas, the setting etc, I think the overall writing is weaker compare to MDZS as a whole. MDZS development was more cohesive. Still, I enjoyed it so it gets a tentative 5 <<less

This was the second Chinese novel I read. This was also the second BL novel I read. Now, after reading a dozen more books, I still can't get over how beautiful Heaven Official's Blessing is.

The protagonist, Xie Lian, is one of the deepest and most intricate characters I have ever read. And though the ML's, Hua Cheng's, character lacks a little depth, I absolutely love him. I love him sooooooo much.

The story as a whole has a little angst, a little fluff but is very engaging and wholesome. Even if... more>> in the future, I end up finding a book as good as HOB, I know for a fact that it will never replace the place HOB holds in my heart.

This is my personal opinion on the book and I've seen people who reviewed this book as 'lacking depth' which is contradictory to my review, but if you haven't read the book yet, I suggest you go judge it for yourself. It will take you at least 30 chapters before you completely get into the story, but it is totally worth it.

The translation is very smooth and you will have no problem following the story. <<less
