One word, Epic. Why? Because so far, instead of relying on op godlike cheat skills, the MC uses his brain to solve the problem. In the daily life to run the kingdom, and also to win the war. Yes there's magic there, after all, the MC was summoned uaing magic. Even so, the use of stratagems and such, makes the battle a realistic feelings.. So far, there's no one man army show, perhaps there will or perhaps there won't be one. Nonetheless, this is a good novel if you like... more>> a genius tactician MC. <<less

"This should be titled "Idealistic" instead of Realistic"

I mean why not?

FLAWS:

... more>> 1. Abdication
"When you abdicate a crown in favor of "unknown person" regardless whether you are a hero or what, a civil war (All people in the nation) is expected"

But it didn't happen as the people don't care about who will be the king or not. This is common knowledge, for every Isekai Politics or politics in medieval times.

Ah yes the duchy revolt? Only the 2 duchy? How about the people? The nobles?

Realistically, the flow of scenarios should be - Power struggle, independence, widespread civil wars, and assassination attempts.

2. Famine
"When there's a famine or food shortage, Nobilities and King should look up in their agriculture and weigh food crops over commercial crops"

Other alternatives can be lookup like the fishing industry or exchange trade negotiation (Import/Exports) with other neutral countries.

3. Reformation
"For every Reformation, there will be a Traditionalist and Progressivist"

If you noticed the Great king is known for his reformation from Inside to outside. However, realistically speaking reformation cannot be done within a half year, citing an example would be the bureaucracy.

Stripping a Noble of his fortune and title, would shake the very foundation of the kingdom because it will also affect his vassals and people if that happens. Hence, it will affect the army in central. I doubt the national treasury is enough to pay a debt and at the same time funding infrastructure, technological research and moving the economy. Sure the corruption is minimized, taking of personal properties, cutting the unnecessary funding. But I might say that's not enough to fund an "ailing country" In addition the kingdom is Isolated. Hence it will take years for a country to recover NOT WITHIN HALF YEAR.

The so-called "talent search",
I cannot believe there is no Spy nor Assassin amongst the recruited. I have this feeling that he is creating a kingdom ruled by talents, in other words a "Meritocracy" I will assume you already know what's the pros and cons of this type of Government.

4. Personal Relationship
" I like Harem thus I do believe some member of his harem have "Individuality"

I only have an issue with Juna, Aisha, and especially Roroa.

About Aisha, but I do feel like she is unnecessary because she is more like acting as a royal guard than a member of his harem.

but why not, I do like her overprotectiveness.

However Roroa is different,
"Her father is killed by a foreign king of the other country, regardless whether you have a bad blood or not, it is still your father"

Then offer herself to the foreign king who killed her father While the foreign king without hesitation agreed" Like what.

Anyway, Roroa is cute and that's enough.

Juna, on the other hand, fell in love with the king while on her mission to determine whether he is fit to rule the kingdom. Yes, while on her mission.

But she is cute so I think that's okay?

What I don't like is the Majority of the population are dumb to think about themselves. (Ex. Food)

The author should refrain from pairing every Single SIDE CHARACTERS IN THE STORY. THIS IS SO UNNECESSARY. LIKE FOR EVERY BOY OR GIRL INTRODUCED, THERE WILL BE A PAIRING WITH THAT PERSON.

Despite all of this, I give a 5 star because I Like the Political issues, War, diplomacy and concepts involved. Thus, I am learning and at the same time enjoying the visual novel.

But as a Critique, normally this should be 3
Plot- 3.5 or 4 /5
Characters, interactions- 3/5
Illustration - 5/5

Those I pointed out is only SOME of the issues from start to middle of the Volumes, so far I only have few issue with the middle up to the latest volume. Citing one will be the plot armor and Infallibility of his decisions. <<less

For me, it was a quiet enjoyable read. As someone who have tried writing a novel with a similar concept I respect the author a lot. But the weakness of the novel is obscure character building and world building.

For Example:

  • the author made a other characters from the 'Fantasy' world act like idiots compared to the MC as if people in medieval era much more s*upid than a modern person even though the reality are different since people who live in that era lacks the information but that doesn't mean they're idiot.
  • Magic. Magic is the most basic parts of this novel since the effects of magic alone have a large impact on the economy, war on tactical and strategic level, technology development, politics, etc. But, the magic were not explained in details.
  • War Strategy, I have a lot of complain on this part. The author lacks understanding on development of war strategy and technology. As I mentioned above, magic have large impact on warfare and that is true. A magician is a artillery battery on its own. Therefore since magic were common to the point of affecting the daily life of the citizen, the way soldiers fight should be different as well. For example: soldiers should not fight in tight formations and should fight in similar way modern soldier fight or in this case how adventurer fight since adventurer fight in small mobile parties. Since magic and artillery bombardment will be able to massacre a bunch of soldiers clumped together. There are a lot of problem with the air force and navy battle as well. During WWI, the appearance of aircraft made battles and reconnaisance simpler. Therefore airforce started to think how to deny the enemy from collecting intelligence. Its also the same with fighter, and bomber concept. But, in the novels they treat the airforce as if fighting a 2D war. And that is the worse thing a general ever do since sky is vast for complicated maneuver. Thats why an air force could only be intercepted or shot down since its hard to stall and prevent enemy air force from bombing your land soldier/ships (for example: bombing runs during WWII). The last is how the author underestimated battle in the sea. It was the most complicated things since naval combat is affected heavily on technology. A fleet is just a speck of dust in the sea. Thats why its rare for an encounter battles to happen (its more common for difensive/ offensive battle). Its true that a iron ships could be built during medieval period. But that doesn't means a pre-dreadnaught battleships alone would be able to be manufactured even in a magical world as a battleship is a complicated lumps of technology and metals. Started from communication technology (lets just say using flags. But using flags only allowed a fleet to move together and preventing complicated maneuver and scouts), armor technology (to create a basic battleships armor, they need to have the necessary tools and knowledge in this case metallurgy its the same for gunnery and aiming system as well). Thats why the weirdest thing is how he decided to build an aircraft carrier in this novel. The carrier needs to be able to manage air combat and maneuver, coordinate aircraft landing, take of, formation. In this fantasy world which have limited communication technology will make an aircraft carrier greatest advantage into its greatest weakness.

There's serious issue with the rating of this novel!! I dont understand how this can have such big rating while its just full of cliche classic japan work with just instead of MC with godlike power made him with godlike mind and every other character is s*upid as pig and have no depth. This novel wouldnt be so bad if author atleast made side-characters more like normal people not NPCs with given script cause in this novel every line is predictable so you cannot even enjoy it

A fun novel, ruined by character assassination.

Let me be clear, this was a very enjoyable read for almost the entire novel but a few chapters basically kills all the fun and good will I had for this book. It boils down to 3 choices that the main hero Kazuya Souma makes during what I'll call the "War Arc". While I'll avoid naming characters and giving too many spoilers, Kazuya does 3 things that go completely against everything he's done up till that point, and afterwards as well.

1 He personally helps... more>> kill a man who he knew was framed just to keep a cover up that would benefit his rule.

2 He has a group of people executed, and admits he hadn't found evidence of their guilt yet, or were people that "weren't helping him" and waiting to see who won the war.

3 He ens*aves a female warrior, to be his personal maid, because she was following orders of a rebellious Duke. No other soliders faced any consequences for their actions since he wanted to quickly bring an end to the war. And her treatment after being ens*aved, while supposed to be played as a joke, just really makes me uncomfortable.

3.A Just a quick add, while she is still ens*aved, the Duke is later given a promotion in the army, and command of a new weapon Kazuya had been developing.

So yeah, I just can't over look these huge issues and don't think I will be continuing to read this series now. Unless I learn of something that addresses these issues, I'm done with this story. Really sad too. <<less

i have to say that this novel goes nowhere. I mean, the entire thing of this novel were in a very unlikable and too much spoil in every chapter. Although so far the story progressed to a certain degree.

Spoiler

The Reason is

  • the Protagonist is forced to the Another world (which is booming till now on Japanese novel) by some country king who is already retired and give all the Responsiblities to the MC to managed his kingdom. Instead of Refusing, Run away or abandon the Country. He just follow the event like (who cares) and so on.
  • MC was given a little bit of a plot twist that the Queen were the one who is the source of the summoning due to her skill of capable looking of the kingdom future (like seeing spoiler of the Bad ending if MC chooses a certain route)
  • The MC is so self proclaimed smart due to studying a bit of world history (oh how funny) which he use to act as a king and a leader.
  • Every chapter consist of so many future spoiler of how the future kingdom would be (it is annoying me to the core) like for example (in a certain year the person A shall become famous person Golden A. That story would be a told a later time) This makes me want to slap the author for giving the spoiling of the ending while the novel was just starting)

This is one of the best Light Novels I've ever read!

The merger between philosophy, social science, politics and even the military feels so great in this novel.
and the main character does not have the power of the Over Power but has a competent subordinates who complement each other. Really the best novel I've ever read.
I hope this novel will continue to be published at least every week.

It was pretty good at during the stabilizing kingdom and first war plot. However it started to go downhill in the latest few chapters where the whole typical japanese cringe isekai stuff starts to happen.

The whole of vol 4 is just talking about how much his harem want to s*x with him, he creating his idol tv program (where he the king is the host, seriously? Wtf), with some mandatory parts of recreating his god tier delicious japanese food.

This is quite average for its Political themes and average for it's Slice of Life Theme... but I don't like its unjustified scores it's getting because of some people who can't understand this Novel. (Val)

Oh seriously Val, putting stressing yourself in some useless argument because someone doesn't agree with you. (Tsugumomo)

I have to make a justified review of this Novel, this one is not bad, but there's a lot of Negative Reviews with a lot of Likes which placing them in the top, and I don't agree... more>> with them (Val)

And that's what I'm talking about, sighs... Anyway "How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom" is already popular, and it's getting a lot of sales right now, so I don't think trying to defend it while pointing out its flaws at the same time will benefit us from reviewing this. I would rather promote Sevens, since that Novel is truly beautiful when it comes to "How a Villainous Hero built the Empire" but it's underrated and it doesn't have a Manga adaptation or ranking spot in the of Sales in Oricon Charts.

Well I don't want to promote Sevens due to its complexity and hard emphasis on implied writing, a lot of readers get bored at it, and worse they will just spread their immature review that does not justify the novel itself, and it will be like a falling domino, rating it very low when they can't understand it. Honestly Seven's a Veteran Level Novel almost close as Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings with a lot of Japanese Elements, so it's like telling a grade schooler to learn Advance Calculus while the appropriate math level for them is basic Algebra. "How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom" is what should grade schooler read... I mean people who wants to learn complex politics without knowledge about them beside from the Lying news (like: Fox news and CNN) or Basic History (Val)

Ok, I understand... so what are we gonna talk about? (Tsugumomo)

Let's focus first on the Story... you review it (Val)

When you are the one who's trying to act like high and mighty about justifying it, but you're just going to make me do the work? Give me a reason why I should not leave right now. (Tsugomomo)

Well, I might not be able to speak it on a rational way, since I let my emotions speak for my self, and you know... (Val)

Hmm... As much as I hate your irresponsibility, I'll do the job since I agree in some of your idea when it comes to reviewing this novel (Tsugomomo)

Ok let's Start (Tsugomomo)

"How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom" is a generic story by utilizing the common tropes of being transported to another world with a twist of focusing on politics, domestic affairs, economics, rehabilitation wars and diplomacy. Most of the problem revolves in the Kingdom of Elfrieden, the country of the royalty who summoned the Protagonist Souma who eventually became the King due to his Vast Knowledge and Realistic Mind (but the author didn't said anything about him liking history or politics) (Tsugumomo)

Now that's the basic story, but here's some problem, the Author has granted the MC too much convenience that there's no people from the lower levels tried to question the legitimate king about his decision, also there's a lot of problem of how the author tried to utilized Souma's Authority, it was so quick that I don't find it realistic at all, quite ironic to its title. (Tsugomomo)

The Reason why I still wanna defend this series because it's still a Decent novel with a lot of educational preface, I've learned a lot from this novel, and without reading this. Realist Hero is my first Political Novel Aside from the Anime Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Realist Hero did a good job on giving me some education when it comes to Political Novels (Val)

It has a lot of historical references too which are books essential made for leaders, the notable book of Sun Tzu's Art of War and the book of Machiavellianism references which were always used in this novel. It makes Realist Hero acceptable as a Political Novel and recommendable to newbies who wants to try Complex Novels like Sevens (Tsugomom)

Ok back from reviewing the story (Tsugumomo)

When it comes to technical writing, the Author has used Future Perspective which gives a lot of spoiler, and a lot of people like me doesn't like spoilers, especially in a Political Novel. But again, this novel is not for veteran political readers, but for newbies. Also the Author is using a lot of Slice of Life theme like "The Cook of the Mercenary Corp" which also uses a lot of similar elements of Realist Hero. And it's too smooth as a political novel which requires a lot thinking and logic, not some simple preface of strategy and diplomacy. (Tsugomomo)

And the biggest Problem was there's too much emphasis on the Entertainment industry made by Souma, this is the same with Release that Witch, but Realist Hero has taken it too far to the point of making use of modern entertainment like promoting Idols and Singers, the story focuses too much on it that it's quite ridiculous on how impossible it is to be acceptable as a norm. Also It hit me hard when the MC tried to recruit one of the enemies that has indirectly insulted him, in Sevens, that person will be punished.

While some negative reviews pointed out what they saw, I don't think their reviews can be considered as a cautionary to stop you from reading this. This one of the most Acceptable Novel even with glaring flaws, since there's also a noticeable of Strength and exceptional elements which are rare to mainstream Japanese web novel. (Val)

That's right, also this is surprisingly relaxing, easy to read, unlike our favorite Sevens which is quite stressful that requires thinking while reading it. (Tsugumomo)

Yep, as far as concerned, I don't have to think about cliff hangers because of the future perspective by spoiling the future, there's also too much convenience that makes novel smooth, and lastly, the happy interactions of the characters when it comes to Slice of Life scenes. (Val)

Overall it's 5/10 for the story alone, it's Average (Tsugumomo)

Ok Let's talk about the Characters (Val)

Sure, I'll wrap it up nicely (Tsugumomo)

The characters in Realist Hero are quite exceptional, albeit predictable, sometimes they are being used as a reaction pieces and plot device, sometimes they do realistic actions. If you're talking about strengths and weaknesses, then the author failed in some area, while he excelled in the other, but it's still in realm of typical mainstream writing. (Tsugomomo)

What about the Main Character (Val)

Souma, the main character is terrifyingly smart, but it was mentioned in the future that he just knows how to utilize his personnel, which is true. Though most of the supporting characters are flawless in assigned area, which destroys the redeeming part of the novel, which is realism. Souma also is not good with woman, like most of the mainstream novels, and he's worse than Lyle when it comes to interaction with his harem. The Harem interaction of Realist Hero and Sevens are too wide if you're going to compare their gap when it comes to quality, and honestly I didn't like Realist Hero when it comes to Romance. Speaking of Government Capability, Souma is quite decent so far, not bad but he still lacks the quality to become a leader, which is acceptable in some ways or not, since the Author bragged about his references, he should have been consisted on that references. There's only one war that has happened in the story, unlike the War Story Sevens, this one is quite light. He's acceptable as a main character, but he has so much flaws to fix, and I don't think the author knows what he was doing when it comes to developing Souma. (Tsugumomo)

How About the Supporting Character, care to review them (Val)

This is biggest flaw in Realist Hero, the Supporting character are practically a plot device to move the plot easily, and sometimes they were used as a reaction pieces to MC's idea and items. Though I did like the commend of the Duchess who predicted the genocide of the real world. But there's an exceptional Supporting character in this novel whom I can't Forgot, Carmine, the General, I love his character, one of the best supporting character I've ever seen in my Novel Milestone.

Ok, how about the Antagonist which is easily being written cheaply by a lot of novels? (Val)

It's quite a surprise that Realist Hero are good on making Antagonist, I've never seen a lot of novels which depicts the reasoning and the purpose of the antagonist. Realist Hero did a good job on this area, which is also one of the reason why I rate it higher than RTW. If there's anything that I love on this novel, it's the philosophy which the antagonist leaves, they don't easily die as a fodder, but as a human threat that needs to be killed, and even after being killed, they still leave a lot of legacy which would make another antagonist, and these antagonist also acts like a real human, quite interesting that Realist Hero showed a potential of improving in the later Volumes which I don't find in RtW. (Tsugumomo)

Overall 5/10 for the Characters (Tsugumomo)

I'm quite tired, just go and give them what you want say (Tsugumomo)

Ok, thank you for your hard work. (Val)

Realist Hero is truly an average if you're going to score it. It has a lot of flaws and a lot of exceptional factors which keeps me from scoring it higher and lower. (Val)

First of all, this Novel is comparable to a Burger, it taste good but it's bad for your health, and I think this is truly enjoyable to many readers. It's not bound by desires, it's just a story of simplicity rather than showing the intelligence of the author. (Val)

What I like in this novel is this is easy to read, easy to binge, and easy to recommend, only a few handful of people will not like this especially like me as an Elitist or Tsugumomo as a Veteran Reader and Researcher. This Novel is truly captivating if you're a casual, and being a casual has a lot of advantages than being an elitist, since being a casual does not hold you back from reading a lot novels and liking them, unlike me who's quite reluctant on reading some novels and I judge so much that I forget my real purpose of reading a novel, another reason why I missed a lot of simple yet good stories. (Val)

Realist Hero is not pretentious, it's just a political novel with a lot of generic writing and slice of life themes, therefore, I truly recommend this story if you're clueless on realistic politics which are present in Sevens. (Val)

Overall my Enjoyment in this novel is 8/10 (Val)

You;re the one who'll decide whether you'll read it or not, reviewers like me can give you some insights. Recommending it is part of my objective, but I won't force it to you. (Val)

Thank you for Reading (Val)

This novel is about clever process of rebuilding kingdom with real world reference book. The character is not two dimensional. The MC views the world rationally. The conflict is largely stripped of tensions but have clever twist and rational explanations. It was very refreshing to read. 5 star from me.

What can I say, this is your average japanese novel, emasculated male character, lots of girl who mainly serve as decoration (look and dont touch), very slow story with a lot of japanese like things. This has given its true meaning on how this story should go, therefore I recommend this story to pple that either wants romance, kingdom building, reincarnation and so on... Positive: The MC tries to act rationally and makes some actual, reasonable plans which he then completes. This makes it far more enjoyable than 'strategists' just winning for no reason at all.

Negative:
* The MC's luck has reached the counter-stop. Every plan goes off perfectly, he stumbles over all potential issues early enough to avert them.
Spoiler

Potential disaster that may destroy the city? He just so happens to hear someone telling a story about it in a nearby tent. Disaster for the elves? He just happens to be nearby the moment it happens so he can offer relief. He removes enormous parts of the bureaucracy and the nobility on charges of treason on a no-tolerance policy? At home everyone thanks him (despite probably losing year-long friends etc. The enemies all gather in one place, but even they don't really worry me at this point. Souma even has supporters in the enemy camp after all, and for some reason the enemies work on lies that are easily dispelled.)

[collapse]

* Everyone important / intelligent believes him immediately. And becomes a subservient follower immediately.

Spoiler

He tells the King about some plans. The King abdicates and makes him the new regent. Neighbouring country's single person who keeps the country together hears about him? Decides to turn her country into a province of Souma's country. Elven princess hears what he thinks may be a potential solution to the elves' problem? She becomes his servant on the spot.

[collapse]

* There is a harem drawing nearer and nearer. He still resists (for unclear reasons and typical MC thickheadedness), but everyone else already accepts it. It seems forced, as everyone else is in a monogamous relationship. At least there are some actual reasons for the girls to want to marry him.

The above combine to completely remove any tension. Everything just falls into his lap, even the enemies provide no tension to me, since Souma already has a plan for them and all plans work perfectly. Or even better than perfectly because...

Spoiler

... there are already supporters in the enemy camp he doesn't know about. Beautiful women, of course.

Over-all it is a fun read, but it falls short of its potential by making it too easy for the protagonist. <<less

If youve been reading xianxia where the MC is genocide maniac, no brain all muscle, and always fighting unnecessary battle and got tired of it then this is an oases in the middle of the dessert for you.

The MC is almost all brain no muscle. It might be too early to judge this novel as that but so far it looks good and totally refreshing. Hope that the author didnt run out of scheme and then give MC a riddiculous power up since his unique skill has a chance to... more>> be a Super OP skill that can sweep the battleground without casualty.

So far its the best Novel in Kingdom building category. Other novel isnt as good, while the other havent reach the kingdom building part. As for this novel, the kingdom building is already commencing in the early chapter and was done beautifully. Finally, a kingdom novel which is more focused on kingdom management and less about magic flinging OP stuff.

The MC take management very seriously and really does things with plan. Unlike many kingdom founding novels, he did not make a kingdom which relied heavily on his and his follower's power, he improves the kingdom with his management policies.

The antagonists so far are believable and reasonable not just some evil bastards. In the first arc we got food shortage and natural disaster from management oversight. In the second arc, we are getting... more>> dukes and foreign nation which did not just attack our MC just because they want power, but have believable reason for doing so. Once upon a time this was ome of my favourites. It combined actual teaching son economics and politics with anime hopeful optimism and tropes. Despite that optimism Spuma still had to make hard choices, plan ahead and balance the two, giving the series a strong start. But it must've overstayed it's welcome because once the series enter the double digits in volumes it stopped being about politics and good leadership and started being about high school hijinks, pairings/shippings, and bloodless combat. It started emphasizing every side character from every country... more>> pairing up, their lv0e lives or what they did at school or w.e., though the more recent volumes tried to get back on track with the narrative about the threat of demons, by then it had lost its edge. At the beginning had to do stuff like planning bloody political purges to consolidate power and then deal with the fallout both emotional and political, he had to fight bloody ears against people blinded by vengeance winning with dangerous gambits. Now? Not so much.

Strong start but eventually fell off, and became the same bland blob that other bland tropey novels eventually became. May update if it gets better or worse. For now 3/5 where a 4.2/5 used to be <<less

Volume 16 ruined the novel. No, not just this volume but since Fuuga was introduced. If you notice, you'll find that Souma has helped fuuga so much, even though he knew that he would come back to bite him in the a*s.

Spoiler

Giving medical equipment, medical training to the enemy, letting his sister stay in the kingdom and letting her provide information about the kingdom without restriction, letting him grow without keeping him in check, etc. I like the idea of someone who can stand toe to toe with MC, but its too forced. Does helping your potential enemy again and again like giving grains and food supplies make sense? Does giving medical technology to the enemy which will be used against people of your own kingdom make sense?

When someone tries to assassinate Fuuga, Souma shows his support to Fuuga publicly and says those who tried to assassin him are doing terro*i*m, but when Fuuga assassinates so many innocent leaders of Union of Eastern Nations, Souma stays quite. Its like the author keeps giving s*upid reasons as to why Fuuga should be left alone. He had many chances to nip him in the bud, but he did not, its like Fuuga has more plot armour than the MC. Ridiculous novel, and a wastage of time. Gave me a headache and a lot of stress. The starting volumes were good, but after that its a long road downhill. Not really a hater of harem, but in voulme 16, it pushed the limits. Wonder if the novel survived because ppl reading this are dumbos who cant see the plot holes or just mor*ns who can ignore the faults to this extent. Dropping this tr*sh of a world building novel where the MC has no ambitions at all. This is more of a dumb slice of life story than a REALISTIC one. He has more than 4 chidren right now and is continuing, even when he knows that the kingdom was in a ruined state before because the previous to previous king had many heirs and so the heirs ended up killing each other and ruined the country in the process of claiming the throne. Oh but we'll just ignore that wont we.

[collapse]

Realist Hero, the title should be more like "NAIVE AND PATHETIC IDIOT OF A PERSON WHO IS DUMB ENOUGH TO HELP HIS ENEMIES AND JUSTIFY THOSE DUMB ACTIONS WITH SOME TWISTED LOGIC" <<less

Average novel.

Considering the target audience of novel are age 14 kids, this novel could be considered as decent. But I found it childish and silly. There's no character depth, I didn't even bother to remember anyone's name except MC.

If you like kingdom building then try it, maybe you will like it. Just dont have much expectations from it or you will be disappointed like me.
