The author seems like a genuinely awful person. I started reading this novel a long time ago and quit it early on but couldn’t remember why. I now remember well and exactly where I got fed up. These kind of stories always have tons of problematic things, but I try to chop it up to cultural differences and move on. However, I only made it to chapter 18, and I’ve had enough.

First, the story is just frustrating. It has potential, but the author takes themselves too seriously without the talent... more>> to back it up, including literature references with meh prose. All the characters are kind of annoying. The MC is a vapid child who immediately becomes spoiled and lords her little bit of power over her second husband. This is all despite the fact the author trying to convince us she’s “mature for her age.” The second husband is a buffoon, and her first husband is boring and also bullies his little brother a little.

Second, and more importantly, the MC’s age is too young. She’s supposed to be mentally 18, but she’s in a 15 y.o. Body and married to men in their 18-20s (can’t exactly remember but definitely they’re at least 18). But okay, it’s supposed to be ancient China-like civilization. Still, this fact ruins the smut scenes so far. Not to mention all the dubious consent throughout.

Last, there’s the obvious bigotry toward other countries and LGBTQ. While I get nostalgia toward the past, the author feels she needs to demonize the present to appreciate the past. The author tries to write a story about a society where one woman marries several men and still manages to perpetuate toxic gender roles and prejudice to non-Chinese people. It’s quite the talent. <<less

General: 9/10

I re-read it after a year and still love it. The plot starts off as a standard transmigration+smutty male harem story to take the reader through many different topics such as politics, family love, family balance, rebellions etc.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

... more>> Translation: 10/10

The translator really put a lot of effort into this story. The translated poems, notes and editing are great.

Plot:

+ FL who can slowly adapt to new environment and make use of her limited modern knowledge

+ awesome MLs with growth paths

+ happy ending

+ well written

+ a bit of revenge drama (in passing)

+ a healthy dose of not excessive or vulgar smut

- there was a moment when she became too used to ancient times, especially near the end her libido went through the roof

- maybe I am a dimwit, but how can an average college student remember the proporitions of gunpowder, grafting techniques, advanced ballista etc. Work and draw blueprints

- one moment FL wants to wait for main ML's decision to go with the flow the next second (and repeated it many times while still feeling guily about it just for show)

Spoiler

I mean her accepting all the other hubbies. She wants to respect Yun Shi Yi as principial husband and then immediately jumps on others while still admonishing other women suvh as her mother for not giving face to the principial husband. To me that's hypocrisy even if all ended well.

I really liked this and I'd probably rate it a 4.5. I chose to round up rather than down because I think this deserves a higher rating. If this author ever writes anything else, I'd really like to read it. Even though the premise of 5 husbands for each woman has enough potential smut to fill 500 chapters, this book reveals a broader macrocosm. Rather than focus on simple local politics and family squabbles, it includes agriculture and trade and international relations as well as guerilla warfare techniques and weapon... more>> design.

response to other's criticism below contains minor character development spoilers:

I didn't find the relationship with the 2nd brother problematic. It wasn't creampuffs and marshmallows but it evolved as each of them matured.

  1. She entered this world with a strong moral belief in monogomy which she didn't easily overcome. This automatically left the lead biased toward her primary husband with less affinity for his brother. Couple that with the disparity between how each treated her. The primary was very thoughtful and concerned with taking care of her. The second was like a loyal labrador, full of enthusiasm but unaware of his own strength. Of course she was going to treat them differently. One was a man and the other was more like a pre-pubescent boy in a man's body.
  2. While the 2nd husband admired and respected her, I don't think Shi Wei initially saw her as much beyond a means to have s*x and an authority figure. He often showed that in his fervor he would forget her needs to the point of really hurting her. He wasn't malicious-just someone too caught up in his own pleasure. At the beginning of the story, his worldview was limited to short term thinking rather than long term strategy. Initially he wasn't as aware or mature as his twin Shi Yi, but he does evolve.
Relationships between different people cannot be the same; preferences, attitudes, chemistry as well as shared experience all play a role. And the system had a hierarchy to delineate that more clearly. strangely I feel like I'm trying to justify the harem system as much as the main character's actions I really appreciated that the mother, sister and lead each had relationships that evolved and matured over time. All three of them were learning. I think I would have been disappointed in the lead if she hadn't shown Shi Wei the same concern as she did to Zhong Zi, if she hadn't given him tips to help his unit succeed. She was concerned about his well-being and equipped him with tools for survival. <<less

Sigh

Well, I need to congratulate the ones that translate the novel, they do a GREAT job! (It's really good and what made me read until the chapter 50)

BUT I don't think I can go on anymore, so I'm dropping it :/

... more>> Let me talk about the good points that this novel has:

1. The s*mut is GOOOOOOOOOD. One of the best I've read.

2. The society in this novel is quite interesting and different from what I normally read in the gender, which is quite refreshing!

3. You'll probably like at least one of the MLs (or hate).

I would keep reading the novel but... The MC is... She's a woman with a tr*sh terrible personality, it doesn't bother you THAT much at the beginning, but as you keep reading the chapters it gets... Digusting. There are other reviews which describe what I'm saying in a better way :v

I kept pushing myself, but I just dislike this MC in a way that even the sm*t scenes seems bad because of her personality. I can't go on with these kind of character as the protagonist, it makes me feel disgusted.

That's it! ʕ→ᴥ←ʔ <<less
