Rebirth of a Star General

Description

The ancient saying goes: Most generals come from Guan Xi, while ministers come from Guan Dong.

He Yan was born to be a Star General.

She was merely a stepping stone for her family, and was used as her brother’s substitute. She had fought on the battlefields for years, bringing peace to Xi Qiang, stopping the barbarians… When her brother recovered, she gave up her position with great laurels brought to her name. Without further ado, she was married off.

During her married life, she was forsaken by her husband and even suffered from a strange illness, thereby losing her eyesight…

The young and pretty concubine stood in front of her, speaking softly: “The decoction you drank that made you blind was instructed by the elders of your family. As you know, the dead tell no tales. If you lived, you would be your family’s greatest threat!”

A great general of her time, the heroine of the country, died pitifully in the hands of those shameless women, who only knew to fight for a man’s favor… How absurd!

When she opened her eyes again, she had become the drill fields officer’s daughter, who was weak and arrogant, innocent and naive.

They had stolen her glory, taken her life, lead her army and betrayed her feelings! She had crawled back from the depths of hell and would take back everything she had lost, one by one.

Bring the world under her feet and with her beauty and nobility, overwhelm the nine prefectures!

But would she get out easily once she entered the barracks?

Hardly did she begin her adventures when He Yan met her arch-enemy of the previous lifetime, that young hunk whose “enemies would retreat as soon as he attacked”.

The chic and cool female general versus the handsome and ravenous young man. Two efficient generals team up to conquer the world!

MTL till chapter 143, it's actually readable.

The plot is simple and interesting, FL and ML interaction in the past was revealed little by little in the current life.

Just like XJX in RMEML, ML also a beautiful general, full of mystery.

I'll continue MTL-ing this then re-read when the translation completed.

My introduction to Qian Shan Cha Ke was reading The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage, and at the time I greatly enjoyed it despite its many flaws. Following that, I ended up reading Marriage of the Di Daughter (and completing it by machine translating it with DeepL) and The Rebirth of an Ill-Fated Consort. The author excels at writing entertaining schemes and face slapping scenes, which is something I greatly enjoy and motivated me to read the author's other novels as well, despite getting annoyed by recycled... more>> plot points, excessive wordiness, dragged out irrelevant nonsense, and cringeworthy edgy r*pe and gore scenes.

I love revenge stories so despite getting annoyed by the aforementioned flaws in the author's previous novels, I started reading Rebirth of a Star General as soon as I saw it being translated. Being impatient and, in the end a fan of the author (despite my complaints!), I also machine translated the rest of the novel (almost the entire thing lol) with DeepL. What I discovered is that this novel is a pretty refreshing departure from some of these weaknesses in the author's previous novels. There's no r*pe, the gore is way less intense and the main character's personality is very different from her predecessors in the author's other novels. The male lead, however, is pretty similar to the other ones, and is completely OP in every single way, although thankfully he doesn't outshine the main character once she really gets going! Speaking of the male lead, the author's tendency to write huge blocks of text using weird purple prose to describe how beautiful he is over and over and over again is present in this novel as well, but not to the same extent as in Malicious Empress. I honestly can't imagine a person reading them and not rolling their eyes, but they don't really detract from the story since you can skip them without missing anything important. The romance is very slow, but the relationship between the MC and ML is wonderful both before and after they fall in love. There's also much less focus on scheming since the main character is more prone to using her superior combat abilities and knowledge of military strategy to achieve her goals, instead of setting up elaborate schemes. There's still plenty of satisfying face slapping, though! In contrast with the author's other main characters, this main character's personality is straightforward, positive and she actually values human life to some extent. However, as with the author's other MCs, given how insanely smart and talented she is, I have a hard time buying how she could possibly have made the mistakes she made in her previous life.

Seeing the author explore some slightly different territory than in their previous work was interesting, and I greatly enjoyed reading this novel overall. Despite this, I would say that it contained a higher amount of what, in my opinion, amounts to unnecessary filler and boring and overly wordy chapters where very little plot or character development occurs. In my view, it would be a much, much, much better reading experience if the length was trimmed by as much as 50%. In the end though, I would still recommend this to fans of the author's previous books or anyone who enjoys a good revenge story.

TLDR:

This novel is just as wordy and overly long as the author's other works, but isn't as gory and the MC isn't as cruel and merciless. Rather than focusing on courtyard drama and scheming, the focus here is on military advancement, which is new ground for the author. The romance develops slowly, but not frustratingly so. <<less

"Do you like the moon?"

"Like."

"Then the moon is yours now."

Top novel of 2022 for me! Don't worry about it being long, I blew threw a 100 chapters in 2 days! My favorite novel from this author! Also I can't express how much I love YANYAN and DUDU!! Both are generals! My favorite female lead ever!

Spoiler

He Yan is our female lead, and her personality is like a mixed of everything. She is dorky, outgoing, friendly, courageous, and sometimes a little shameless lol. I really like how she considers people's feelings, and cares about her friends a lot. She is also very charming, and handsome, especially when she dresses as a man, and fights. Despite the brutality of her previous life, she does not seek out for revenge as much as the FL in ME, and the author mentions that it is because she wants to take the opportunity to live her life to the fullest since she had the opportunity to be reborn.

Xiao Dudu or Xiao Huaijun is our male lead, and he is the type that is cold on the outside, but warm on the inside. He has always treated the female lead well whether it is her previous life or their current life. He protects her when it is needed, but he is not the possessive type who controls all her actions, and lets the FL shine. As well.

It's a happy ending for the leads, but a bad ending for all the side couples : (

Worth reading if you have run out of things to read but this along with the author's other works are really just average.

Story is interesting enough (think Mulan but slightly different) however the author always has these elements that make her work just okay instead of exceptional. (Please note that these would include some spoilers)

    • Abilities that don't make sense. In the author's other works, the MCs have supernatural memory abilities. It didn't make sense how the memory of the MCs were so clear -- even for things that shouldn't be possible (ie Malicious Empress MC remembering another guy's speech even though she was busy ogling another guy when it was being said). Here it's similar but even more preposterous. I can understand a blind person enhancing their other senses to interact with the world but a blind person being able to guess the side of the dice just from the sound? That's infeasible. She mentions things like each side of the dice having a different sound. I can suspend disbelief if it's a dice she's used all her life but her just waltzing in to a casino (which is also most likely noisy) and being able to predict the exact dice position? That's infeasible.
    • MC is supposed to be a general but is absolutely clueless about ML suspecting her even though she shows abilities that aren't within the potential of a new recruit. If she were just a normal soldier who just has incredible physical abilities but not much wit, then it's fine. But she was a general in her past life. How can she not understand that she can be misunderstood for being a spy given all her unconventional abilities? She also doesn't seem to have any foresight about subterfuge. She couldn't seem to predict that her former older brother would use war to kill off her former trusted confidants in the army and is surprised when this happens. How is that something that a general should be surprised about?
    • To combine the first and second points, author focuses on abilities that shouldn't even be focused on. It's like making a character Mary Sue as possible even if certain traits aren't even necessary for the narrative. Then they forget to make sense of the character inconsistencies. It's a bit grating (especially for this novel)
    • Author tends to make subpar villains. I admit I haven't exactly gotten in depth here so this may change but in all her other novels, villains mostly just feel like one person with a different name + a slight difference in variation (like one being slightly more cowardly or more patient). No one ever feels remorse and the villains usually barely have any redeeming characteristics outside of physical appearance and their assumed intelligence before it drops once the MC/ML appears.
    • There is some level of misogyny in the author's works. This may also change once I get more in depth in the novel but since I just finished Ill Fated Consort, I can say that the author never seems to treat female villains well. Almost all of them are just there to treat the MC badly because of jealousy or perceived slight (even if they've only fallen into their own traps prior) and never have any guilt nor remorse. I don't mind having these types of villains but for the author to make all her female villains like this shows misogyny and pretty much just goes with the idea that all females who are not in line with the MC are all wrong and hateful.

I re-read this novel several times already.

I like the story especially FL being female general which is quite rare.

ML is smart and nice to FL different from those other cold male leads who ignore FL all the time.

ALL IN ALL, RECOMMENDED!

It's worth the 2 days binge read!!!!

This story was truly a gem. It wasn't overly fluffy or dramatic or angst. It had the right pacing and also accounted for the character development of a lot of characters. Everyone has their own background, motives and personality. Although the romance developed slowly, it was the kind of development that would make their romance grow on you. This story was able to portray realistic endings of several couples, whether it be bitter and sad or happy and eternal. Aside from the romance, the... more>> family relationship and friendships were also tackled. Albeit the villains were quite dumb and the ML and FL being a bit Gary Sue-ish and Mary Sue-ish (tho from hardwork), it was able to show some realistic scenarios like how people could die in a war
Spoiler

.

Anyway, I was here for some dose of romance and I was duly satiated.
Spoiler

The male lead was the only one who actually cared about FL, even in her past/original body. He was there silently helping her out in the dark ever since they became classmates though it wasn't out of love, but because the FL reminded him of his younger years. FL truly lived a tragic past life in her original body. As during ancient times women didn't have much rights, even though she was a general, she still followed her family's orders. FL really also just wanted to be loved and appreciated by someone so she was very obedient to her family and got married into a wolves' den. ML was also there when she tried to commit su*cide after being blind and he was the one who told her to live and be the best blind there is. I love how they were destined to be together in the end after missing out during her 'past' life.

[collapse]

I also loooove how I couldn't predict and understand the ML's thoughts in the most part of the novel. I love how he supports the FL and protects her in his own way. There were quite a lot of times where the ML saved the FL but I like how the novel stated that the FL could indeed save herself but that would leave her to be injured. As much as independent FLs are awesome, strong and independent FLs that knows when to depend on their MLs are admirable. :) <<less

Honestly, I'm not really a fan of the MC personality. She is so arrogant for some who supposedly had been a general.
Spoiler

She thinks too highly of herself and her skills. Of course, the author allows her to win all the time. She also is s*upid and doesn't understand how much attention she is drawing to herself considering her background. There is no way that she a new recruit would have so much knowledge right off the bat. She doesn't even try to play it safe and keep her identity a secret. She openly challenges people unnecessarily, drawing attention to herself and making herself seen by people. So far, I'm just not liking her.

I'm still reading though so who knows.

This is "The Best" gender bender.

There are lots of stories, some have fantastic beginnings and other have good happy endings. Now a days there are very few stories with stable pace and considerate author.

The pace and events never fell short on anything. I kept reading and dreading that I am going to read some type of blunder next, that the action might be rushed or characters might not be given light. But no. Every character was given its due shinning time with easy stable pace and logical sequence of the... more>> story.

It only made my reading experience fulfilling and I feel satiated.

A runaway youth entering the army, but the catch is that she is a girl. But the thing is she is more at ease being a man. And this whole story revolves around why she is at ease being a man.

The romantic angle was steady too, felt a bit routinely. A typical devoted and cold blooded ML who only has MC in his eyes. But the beauty is the balance. There is a balance in the power. Both are equally famous, equally powerful and equally in love and equally devoted.

I loved the war strategies and the way they were presented, I didn't felt it to be boring in the least. There was never a page where I felt that the story is dragging. It was feast to read it.

Before reading this my fav was " Its hard to be a man" transmigration story with gender bending MC. But in that MC was too over powered. And it only occurred to me after reading this one. That story has its own place, I still like that but now my number one is this one.

Worthy read. Don't hesitate to read it. Mtl is not hard to read as well. Read it. <<less

This novel was good, deserved with 5 star. I am not too fond of writing the review, one of the reason, since english is not my mother tongue. So this is the first.

If you live strong heroine, loyal, brave and knows what she, herself wanted, you will like this novel.

Almost every new chapter of this makes me wonder if it can get any better and with the next chapter, I answer- yes.

Funny, touching and super slooooow burn romance. So slow, one might think it's glacial, but that little flame keeps low key burning along. The MC and ML really get to know each other as people and it's brilliant.

This is so beautifully written, engaging, and the characters feel very real. The writing has really improved from the popular ill-fated consort/military empress books. Those were quite dark with a focus on revenge which is not so relatable. The storyline of star general is smooth and the MC is so likeable.

So sad that she has to suffer so much in both lifetimes. Love her grit and honor and by god how blooming’ hard she works. Despite all the injustices she suffers, she is not an embittered curmudgeon despite still wanting revenge of course. Am slowly warming up to ML. Translators are doing a wonderful job, worth waiting for the quality work they’re doing.

So beautifully written, there's no words to describe this masterpiece. A must read. Your heart will be torn painfully along with He Yan into a thousand pieces, yet heal back with warmth with Xiao Jue's seemingly endless love. Xiao Jue is no doubt, the top male lead I love most. Everything about him is admirable. The more you get to know him, the deeper you fall for this man.

He Yan is also his equal match, so kindly powerful and strong. Despite the betrayals she faced, her heart still remains pure... more>> and simple. These two were truly meant to be together. What an admirable and beautiful pair. Don't hesitate to give it a try. It's a bit slow, but promise this will be one of the best journey you've ever walked upon :) <<less

Maybe I'll change my mind after a while but my current impression after finishing it is: it's ok.

My rating: 3.5/5

This is my second/third novel from the same author. I really like Malicious Empress and currently also in the middle of Ill-fated Consort. A Star General is a little different from the previous two novels.

Star General is about He Yan, a noble woman who previously switch place with her cousin who after being born was told he would not live long so she took her cousin male identity (because they needed... more>> a male heir? the logic is kinda flimsy here) and eventually became a young rising general of Great Wei. Her cousin managed to survived into his adulthood and fully got healthy so they eventually switch back their identity. She died due to her family fearing her identity will eventually be exposed causing downfall of her family. Her soul then went into another younger girl who just happen to share the same exact name and is from a more humble family. She, who never truly have her own identity in her original body, decided relive her life in a similar path but without a shackle of the responsibility she had with her family. She started doing thing she never had a chance to: making friends and falling in love.

Still the same rebirth premise but the main difference I felt is that although she harbor hatred with her original family most of the novel is spend on her reliving her life and less on revenge unlike Malicious Empress and Ill-fated Consort. In fact, the revenge part didn't really start until chapter 190 and lasted for like 50 chapter... just to give you an idea of how little time was spend on revenge. (50 out of like 267 chapters) Whereas Jiang Ruan in Ill-fated consort spent her time on revenge on one characters from the get go and with very little time living their life. A nice change in pace. This is either a good thing or bad thing on whether you care too much on scheming and revenge. Malicious Empress is kinda in the middle but even Shen Miao spend way more time on revenge than He Yan who literally have one revenge arc.

In terms of character, He Yan is no doubt the nicest of them of all. Sure she hated what her family did but even in her "revenge" she wasn't cruel, she simply wanted to expose her family and want the word to know the great star general previously is a female. Whereas, Jiang Ruan from Ill-fated is the coldest and cruelest of them all. Shen Miao is very revenge-focused in the beginning but shifted in the middle of the story.

In terms of romance, again I think Star General is the most romance focused with Ill-fated Consort being the least. Malicious Empress being somewhere in between. He Yan and Xiao Jue is also way more playful with one another compare to the other couple.

Personally I still like Malicious Empress more as a story, I think is the most well rounded. However, I think I might understand why some would like A Star General more. He Yan is in a more likable character, more bubbly and funnier. Her dynamic with the male character Xiao Jue (male lead) is also cuter. This definitely more character development and more focus on romance. He Yan also simply more earnest on trying to live a more fulfilling life. So there are definitely a lot of things I rather enjoy here that doesn't exist or has very little of in the other two novels. However, I've read Malicious Empress more than once and I don't think I'll read A Star General again. Don't get me wrong. It's a nice story but it's not something I felt an urge to revisit later on.

Pros:

-More character development for female lead

-He Yan spend more time living life and doing thing she didn't have a chance before (making friends, falling in love, and just generally building relationship with people around her...)

-Interesting side characters/stories. Her master has an interesting side story. Her buddies in the army is also cool. Her brother and father in the second body was also nicer, i.e. she get to have a family she never had originally. Her original mother is also pretty tragic because she felt neglected in the original family but never get to know how much her mother loves her.

Cons:

-Slower. Thing happened slowly for the first 190 chapter and then suddenly tons of thing happened at the last 20 chapters. As if author just wants to drag things out in the beginning and all of the sudden wanted to just end things as quickly as possible.

-More filler. Felt story could've been trimmed down by a quarter and even a third and not much would've been lost.

-Chu Zhao (Second male lead) - I love a good second male lead but not how it's written here. I think author tries to write in a second male lead to add more conflict to the relationship between MC and ML but at the same time is not experience at writing a good second male lead. As a result, the "conflict" is shallow and the character is underutilized. On the other hand, I like his back story, which I felt the author is stronger at (... developing back stories).

-The court political seems very underdeveloped here. Like the fight between crown and fourth prince. And the conflict between Xiao Jue and the Minister Xu.

-The revenge is rather unsatisfying. The way the whole family was exposed was kinda underwhelming. The downfall of the original He family felt so underwhelming. Don't want to go into detail.

-Character just don't seem as intelligent. I understand He Yan is not the scheming witty type but how come everyone just become so s*upid. Character in her other novel seems way more intelligent or at least gives off a facade of being very witty but unfortunately none of the characters here felt particular smart. Chu Zhao and Xiao Jue is probably the most intelligent, I guess. Chu Zhao, which was built up as a most capable student of Minister Xu, ended up not doing much at the end in particularly his plan with crown prince. Xiao Jue although brought downfall Minister Xu but kinda weirdly didn't anticipated how drastic court change after. Minister Xu, which author build as a mastermind behind a lot of scheme, didn't do anything in the end especially how easily he was taken out. Character in other novel seems 2, 3, 4 step ahead of the other party and there seems to be a constant battle of wits. However, there's none here. <<less

I tried really really hard to like the MC. I had read until c 171. But I cannot stand her pure white lotus heart. Despite MC terrible past and yet she still retain her pure innocent heart and despite knowing that the opposite party is suspicious and yet still treat them well.

I know human being are not perfect but this MC is just too much of a saint. By the end of 4th volume I want to officially recognize MC as a living 'Saint'.

I guess I am just too black... more>> hearted to see the good in people. This MC seems to love helping her enemies and unintentionally harmed her allies. <<less

That is another fantastic novel from this author with, for the first time, a different type of Female Lead.

And is not because the Female Lead becomes a general, but because the Female Lead is a positivist, lively, always cheerful character, which contrasts with her previous works reincarnated Female Leads a lot.

I really liked how she also made the Male Lead different this time around. A little tsundere like the previous works, yes, but still less cold-hearted and black-bellied, and more conflicted inside than his peers.

The only criticism I still have... more>> for this author is her lack of describing intimate scenes. It is always cut before anything can happen, and I don't mean to subtly describing the whole actions, but she doesn't even describe the prelude nor the memories of it. I think this is something I always miss from her works, despite I always grow to love the main couple and their interactions a lot. <<less

I haven't felt at such a loss for a long time after finishing a novel. I mtled this one because I was impatient to wait for translations, but the details in the story were still understandable.

What to say? The characters really just grew into me that I felt quite sad after finishing this novel. There are so many heartwarming moments and each character had their backstory.

I absolutely loove the fl's personality. She's like the man instead of XJ LOL. She's arrogant, straightforward, pure, hearty, and despite the past she suffered... more>> under her family, she didn't focus on vengeance. She's also very independent and reasonable.

Spoiler

Like when she set off to Rundu because she knew He Rufei wont send in reinforcements, she informed ML of this but Xiao Jue did not have any basis to trust her or u could say that even if he did trust her, he had no reason to send off reinforcements because He Rufei was closer to that area. It was so exciting when she went off on her own. We really need more FLs like this and as well as more MLs like Xiao Jue who doesn't get led by his personal feelings but focus on the bigger picture. It just felt very realistic for me.

[collapse]

ML was very suspicious of her at the start and the romance developed really slowly, but that's okay, because FL got into action herself. such an awesome FL! Hey, after reading this novel, I don't really wanna go back to reading fast paced romance without action anymore.

ML is also very supportive of her and told her to do whatever she wanted, and that she didn't have to live under any pretense. They were really meant for each other. I have to say I have a crush on both the FL and ML ╮ (╯▽╰) ╭

I guess if there is one thing that bore me out in the entire novel is the palace politics. (Also probably because it was such a headache to read it in MTL) Anyway,

Spoiler

He Rufei and her past husband got dealt with so quickly tbh, as same with the crown prince. The Uto's weren't that smart too as one of the main villains in the story. The politics arc wans't really long but still did quite manage to bore me out for about 2 chapters. After all those politics, I just preferred seeing FL defeating enemies in the military.

[collapse]

And if I may add a second minor one... maybe the flashbacks? Don't get me wrong, they're extremely major to the plot, but some of them are reaally long. By what I mean long, they literally last 3-4 chapters iirc.

But overall, I'd still rate it 5/5. You might feel like the beginning of the story is too fast-paced and honestly, I dropped this novel for 3 months at the 60th chapter because I felt that the MC was too op when she got her rebirth, but the story develops stably after that when she joined the army. This novel is the best one for me out of all Qian Shan Cha Ke's stories. Let me warn you though that the romance in this one is an absolutely slow-burn.

Spoiler

If I remember correctly, they only became lovers around chapter 200, but it's absolutely worth it. I don't like fast paced romance and would gladly exchange them for better plot development any time. This story has one of the best romance developments I've read.

It's so good. Recommended <3

A lot of things happened and I really want to rant about it but I'm also so lazy so I won't. Anyways, I loved the story which I didn't expect at first.

Spoiler

The beginning was fairly good but it's only above average for me so it surprised me it's golden. Well maybe because it's only the introduction and not much happened yet. It only starts to be so good it's glittering maybe around the middle (?).

I love the MC <3

The MC was originally a simple girl and all her golden finger was earned from the hard work and obstacle she faced in her first life. So I kinda understand why she's not overly smart and sometimes seems naive because she's not really that good in the first place. She's not a scheming person so her plans and responses are straightforward (But she's so proficient in the art of war). And because she needed the ml's recognition to gain her way to revenge, she laid her skills open other than her sword skills (Since he might recognize her from her past life). Her only upper hand is she can lie straightfaced and disguise herself thoroughly. This is why the ML is very suspicious of her and doesn't know what her real thoughts are.

At the beginning, I lowkey don't like her. Maybe because the ML was too smart in contrast to the MC. It's only around the last half I wanna slap my past self (How dare you don't like her you jerk!!).

Like the ML said in the story, the MC was a very contradictory person. Another reason why he can't understand her thoroughly. The MC might boast with her chins up but in fact, she has very low esteem. To the point that the ML needs to lay out his feelings before the MC believes he likes her. Her skills are mediocre and even low and the reason why she's so good now is because of her hard work in her past life. Her morals and principles are so likable.

She's very proficient in disguise the ML always believes she's lying. For him, she's a scammer through and through. Well, she really was, but in fact, the ML is the person she lied to the least. So when the ML found out about the truth. He realized that the MC was not lying. It's so heartbreaking I cried buckets.

The confession part was *chef's kiss <3 it's so beautiful!

Overall, it's a treasure to share so read it people!

I still want to rant more about the side characters but they are so likable I'm too lazy to type. But I still want to say I love them.
