ExR’s summary:

An average, ordinary university student had his first life burned away in a painful death from a fire, causing him to transmigrate into a prince of another universe. However, never did he expected that his younger brother, who he fiercely protected and ultimately brought to the throne, would be the one to betray him. Upon being on the brink of death after suffering three years of torture, he was thrown into a river.

Scarred physically and mentally, he ended up being washed up at an eccentric yet peaceful place he had never heard of before. Having nowhere to go, he began working as a helper in the government office, apathetic about his life.

Will he be able to heal from his traumas and rediscover the beauty of life?

Tldr: A healing story of a transmigrator who slowly recovers from his trauma, finding happiness and fluffy romance in a strange yet peaceful place.

Author’s summary:

An average, normal university student transmigrates into the royal family in another world, where he becomes one of the successors of the throne. Life in the palace is inevitably difficult though, what with all the scheming enemies around him. This man’s only wish in this world is to be able to protect his “younger brother,” and for that, he’ll do anything–whether by hook or by crook–to ensure his brother’s safety and have him succeed the throne.

The man never once expected, though, that the person whom he swears to protect would be the one to stab him in the back. He got locked in a dungeon where he was tortured for three years. And when he was on the brink of death, his body was thrown away into the river.

When he wakes up, he finds himself in an eccentric and peaceful place, where everyone is suspiciously more than what they seem…

Very cute, the relationship is satisfying, believable, and sweet (not what I would call healthy but these two characters probably were never bound for a typical relationship). I have a few points that bugged me though:

  • Repetition: The author padded each chapter by hammering certain points over and over to the extent where I was reading one paragraph and skipping over the next three because they didn't offer anything new or interesting. I feel like 5-10 chapters could have easily been trimmed off by a bit of editing.
  • Pacing: We set off at a whirlwind sprint for the first half of the first chapter and then slow to a crawl for the next twenty chapters. This story is character driven, so there was always bound to be a lot of navel-gazing, but if its character driven I feel like we should see more of the character's pivotal moments, which brings me to my next point...
  • A lot of important scenes that could have really immersed me in the story and its message (recovering from trauma) happened "off-screen" or were just told to the readers (instead of shown). If the author wanted to draw out her story she could have definitely focused on fleshing out those scenes and adding new ones that served as good examples of how MC was allowed to grow through his arc.
  • Why is this transmigration? Was having a happy, normal life as a college student before transmigrating really necessary for the MC's journey back to feeling safe and secure? Honestly, I would have preferred this to be a political historical drama-turned-slice-of-life.
  • Math don't math: This is a nitpick but the age of MC wriggles around a bit. By the time we're set in the story he's about 16 (?) but then a few years later he's still 16?
Despite these issues this story is still pretty satisfying! Exiled Rebels does great work!

This is such a weird novel bro. Ur reminded of the MC's previous suffering every 2 lines, it's like the author doesn't plan to move on. And I've read novels with more suffering than this. You'd expect revenge or face slapping after all the recalling MC does. Well if you expect this you'll be expecting a lot!!! It's just whining and whining about what happened to the MC and then more and more whining about what's happening to him now.

Even the comments are so 2d. No real discussions about what's... more>> going on in the novel, just rows and rows of "thanks for the chapter"

So MC whines one second and the next he claims to be over it. He's content with the life he's living now of starving and all that and the next he whines over it. Doesn't plan on creating a source of income and the next second he does... It's really a funny novel; funny weird and not funny ha ha.

I've dropped it even before knowing the ML but I'm pretty sure I'm not missing out much. Reading this novel is like attending an old person's funeral and just sitting there watching old people cry about a dead old guy and just having to bear with it. Yeah. <<less

This novel is all about redemption, forgiveness, and unconditional (platonic and romantic) love. Very slow-paced, kind of about sweet nothings and day-to-day life, although there's a plot and progression (emotional growth). And contrasting to the majority of cultivation novels, it's about pursuing peace and a simple notion of satisfaction/happiness, rather than growth, growth, and more growth. I think it captures very homey villages quite well, like the fact that there's practically no privacy and everyone gossiping about one another lol. Some people might not get it if they've never experienced... more>> it before but for those who have, you know everyone involved always loves and hates it.

Nowhere near the cream of the crop though and I for sure did not cry my eyes out, although I teared up at times. Some of the internal thoughts feel to me like they're too dramatized at some parts--like I get the feeling but must it be spelled out in such a way?

But well, regardless, total recommend for people seeking peace of mind and pine for a quiet life away from the hustle and bustle of cities and the competitiveness that comes with it. <<less

I gotta say at time you don't understand how the MC washed up on a unknown piece of utopian land

But as the story goes by the truth gets unravelled and the love between the broken MC and the gentle yet bloodthirsty ML is so damn heart warming

The is no revenge or such only slow and smooth walking toward a cute ending

The fluffy parts is just to die for and even the plot could have been done even more so in an interesting way but the author leaves it as if... more>> only putting cheese on bread but forgetting to make the sandwich

To me this novel has a lot of promising material. The Bad thing is the writer is not good enough to executing the story.

Which why this story more like a slice of life story where It's not fits the basic plot that this story have.

Spoiler

The only material that manages to display properly in this story is only the legend of MO and the ML family background...

When you read [This is a story about recovery from trauma and finding happiness.], it really was true.

I'm glad I found another treasure after shifting through many danmei lists. This story is simple yet heartwarming and fluffy. With the right amount of stimulation to make me tear up or laughing out loud.

Recommended.

Another story to bookmarked. Such a heartwarming story. It's resonate with me so much. Experiencing MC emotional struggles as he slowly open up his heart again to love and to trust. I usually read fast but reading this make me think about my life and the way I live. I don't know when will I ever be able to open up my heart like MC but reading this helps to give me a new perspective in life. It helps to re-inforced my views on how I want to lead my... more>> life. Pursuing power or money won't make me happy. I realized this a few years ago. Hence, I return home. I just want to live a peaceful and happy life. But I don't know whether I can ever open up my heart to others. I hope I can just like MC. <<less

God, I really wanted to like this. The beginning was definitely interesting - a soothing, slice of life feeling with a disabled protagonist. Some off-color, homophobic jokes, but overall not a bad time. A solid 4, notable because of the protag.

But then it all went downhill - not just downhill, but took a swan dive into bad writing and just bizarre choices. While the intimacy was more consensual than in other web novels I've read (cough MXTX cough), it still had issues - but what really was strange was the... more>> plot that came out of nowhere.

, the mystery of Guang Tian, the relationship with the outer countries... it was weird. Okay that's kind, tbh it went bonkers. A good plot can enthrall me even if I don't like the other aspects, or if the plot sucks but the relationship is well done enough I don't care. The relationship was fine and had some good moments (the flower petal kissing scene was peak romance and I'm going to steal it), but ultimately it had a few too many issues to salvage the novel. (Especially the treatment of the MC's scars I was so upset...)

do something better with ur time like uhhh. Watching She-ra.

2/5 for the overall book, but there were two good romance scenes that manage to knock it up to 3/5. <<less

If you're feeling lost or after reading an angsty story, this might help you alleviate your mood.

This is a story about healing, fluff, care, love and understanding, just that, nothing more. Actually before I read this, I was actually anxious about my workload at work to the point that I was crying without me noticing it. But as I encountered this story, not only did this help me regain my composure but also helped me to set aside my the bad things I was thinking. I will really read this... more>> again and again. It's just so soothing but it's actually balanced with a bit of angst.

I am very grateful to the author for writing this story.

I love everything about this story, Little Pumpkim, Mo Shu and the villagers' characteristics, the straight forwardness of the story, the execution of storytelling, the ending, the author's message to the readers, everything...

It's short that I finished this for just a couple of hours and I'm already contented and happy.

As always, ER did a really great job for translating this story! You never let me down! <<less

In a typical transmigration novels, readers would expect an action packed, full of mystery, unexpected twist and maybe even dog blood but this novel is the ''what happens after" of transmigration. The typical transmigration plot would be the protagonist life as a prince, which was only mention shortly. This is a story of a person who after doing his part in the world he was thrown in, feelings of loss. Nowhere to go, no reason to be alive or stay alive, finding peace in the simplest things in life,... more>> letting go and living in the moment.

Spoiler

Some readers might be put off with the ML's ability to kill outsiders. His story reminds me of The One Who Walked Away From Omelas.

I've finished this a year ago but I keep on re-reading this novel whenever I'm sad and feeling a little lost. For me this is a comfort novel, that's why I'm giving it 5 stars. <<less

This story moves slowly, because it’s a story about healing, and healing can be a slow process. It’s fluffy and gentle, but also captivating--there’s a mystery shrouding the village, and just like the romance and healing, it, too, unravels slowly. I was surprised by the truth when it was finally revealed! I enjoyed the way it made a lot of the characters seem more morally grey; I thought it balanced out all the fluff and tenderness well!

This books is just a short and simple read about how MC just lives his life on an unknown town.

He didnt wish to explore more of the town he was in despite sensing it was extraordinary because he knew it was extraordinary. Meaning, he saw no point in discovering too much and just didnt think it was that important to dwell about the town. He just wanted to live a normal carefree life not go on adventures to discover the town. Everything was perfect there, the people were all nice,... more>> the place was beautiful, so MC didnt think much about it and just lives his life.

I enjoyed this novel for its simplicity and sometimes we need to enjoy the simple things in life and just go with the flow.

A good book to read after u read some dog blood bl <<less

What a wonderful, laid-back-paced story. Not entirely fluffy, but heartwarming is what best describes this novel. The story is all about redemption and acceptance, and finding happiness after all the traumatic experience MC had. Truly wonderful.

I lost my interest halfway through the novel.

I like the MC and the ML is somewhat tolerable. But to me, there's just too many fillers just to show how unmotivated the MC is, it's just not what I want to read.

Too many names to know and to remember.

This was such a bittersweet (emphasis on sweet) read. The MC had a very traumatic past, which isn't focused on much, and learns to overcome it through settling down in a mysterious village and learning to love. The romance was slow but so heartwarming, eliciting many tears and laughs. The ML has a bit of a darker side, but is very caring towards the MC. I could have done without the last 1/4, but I would highly recommend this novel nonetheless.
