Disguised as a man on the battlefield, she flew to a rage towards a knight who wanted to die and after giving him healing magic that chipped away at her own life, she collapsed.

Please give this story a chance! The girl is an amazing girl and the knight seems nice. I want to see how our MC will make the ML feel like he's worth it. They are precious jewels T_T

3/5 - C Tier - It's worth a read if it's your type

I can't help but feel that the novel skipped what could have been one of the best parts. I'll call it the 'Pre War' arc, an arc that failed to exist. An arc that could have been used to build up the character as well as her strength and weaknesses. The prologue tells us just how she came to be a part of the war, but the arc could have shown us much better. The novel says why... more>> war broke out, but the arc could very well have said things better, showing the world. Even more, there could have been a point where the two characters meet in passing before the war.

The Pre War arc isn't exactly a necessity, but it could have been served well. Then again, after reading the novel more, I've realized the theme of the story wasn't what the arc would have entailed. A pet peeve.

The novel is too early in its run to fully judge, but there are few things to be noted.

(1) It's written and translated well. Although not descriptive in fights nor landscapes, everything else needs minimal imagination or brain straining to understand. Its vocabulary is fairly higher than most light novels on this site.

(2) Sometimes it says things, things that I suppose are meant to pull at one heartstring or another. However, they fall short in a multitude of ways. Sparsely, it says instead of shows and sometimes it shows when it could simply say. Other times we merely get a mention in passing, but much too small to care about.

(3) The prologue as a whole just works.

(4) For now, the story is quite laid back. The world seems to slowly open up through the eyes of Halka. However, there is a plot that is still in its initial beginning and I assume things will slowly change while unraveling.

(5) The MC is competent and has what could be described as a 'heart of silver'. She isn't averse to killing people, but she also sometimes gets overly dramatic over things that would normally not affect people that have lived through as much as she has.

(6) For the time being, every named character that has appeared has had a personality of their own. Some more than others, very few a gimmick.

As a whole, the novel is currently worth a read. <<less

Have you ever been in an unfamiliar place by yourself for a long time?

Can you imagine having no way to return to your friends, family, and any people who know who you are and care about you?

I haven't read many isekai-type novels, but I completely believe the translator when they say this is very unique.

... more>> I found the point-of-view of the narrator very realistic and human. It's relatable on a wide host of levels.

I also really enjoyed the strength of the heroine. Her strength isn't one that never shows weakness or imperfections; she makes mistakes, has willful and selfish moments, but she also makes up for them by facing up to her fears and using compassion to understand and share the burdens of people around her; we are all human after all. In turn, the people around do the same for her.

Although some parts were a bit dramatic, this is a very wholesome, sweet, and decidedly romantic story where the ML falls for our MC despite her disguise.

Spoiler

2nd ML is pretty cool too, really liked him a lot!

Really fantastic translation, 10/10. Everything flowed very well and was very vivid. <<less

This was a painfully beautiful novel. The pure anguish conveyed through the thoughts and actions of some of the characters made me feel like my heart was ripping in half. I loved this story, it captured the complexities and burdens of the MC's situation and the humanity of the characters in a story short enough to read in one sitting.

I've never been more frustrated with a novel in my life.

Translation quality is excellent, but the characters are far too frustrating and unrealistic. The amount of angst I had to wade through was simply not proportional to the actual depth or charisma of any of the characters, flat as they are. There's simply too many things about this novel that don't make sense.

Spoiler

What made me most upset is that the MC - after so long agonizing over her loneliness at being torn from her world - sympathizes with the dragon summoned before her on realizing they're kin. AND THEN HER MASTER PLAN IS TO KILL IT TO FREE IT FROM ITS MISERY. Even after realizing it's an intelligent being that surely just cannot communicate when it's torn from its world! I am just so absolutely dumbfounded I can't even read anymore. I should have stopped reading when the love triangle started up with absolutely 0 build or realistic foreshadowing for a romance. I should have stopped when the characters were unrealistically or irrationally upset over tiny things. I should have stopped at the low-level misogyny that pervades through the entire piece. But no. I got curious about how this was going to end. Well, I'm no longer curious. I'm enraged.

Great story with a great translation. It's surprisingly deep, and I really felt for the characters. I highly recommend it. There's enough intrigue and character if you're not into love stories, a little comedy to balance out the grim topic of war, and a satisfying love story for romance fans like me.

I just marathoned it and had a good cry in the process. I feel so refreshed now lol. The story starts off at surface level in many ways, but digs into the emotional depth under the surface as it... more>> progresses. I hope you can enjoy it as much as I did. <<less

It was so amazing I don't know if I regret reading this novel because it felt like a treasure or I feel regret that I didn't find this novel earlier because it felt I'm missing out something if I don't read this novel

I feel so emotional after reading this novel I could say it's the best short novel I ever read I feel angry, happy, sad I was so choked up in emotion my tears doesn't stop falling

Each and every character is so life like I was so attached to... more>> them especially 2nd male lead I just wish he could find someone else someone as wonderful as our heroine or someone who could make him leave his everything to her or someone who very opposite to our heroine but love him regardless

I felt this novel bring out the complexity of emotions that peoples always take lightly off even me just realised that only because we didn't experience it ourselves it shows different perspectives of life that I couldn't feel more grateful of thank you <<less

This was an excellent isekai novel. Even though the usual isekai tropes are not present (growing one's skill, meeting new friends, going on an adventure etc), it showed the more unspoken side of isekai most stories just brushed off lightly - how someone reacts when everything s/he has ever known and and loved was suddenly ripped away. The romance wasn't the main focus either, and considering the setting, it seemed appropriate. Even the ending felt apt - given the setting it would be out of place to have a happy... more>> ever after. Not to say it was a bad ending; 'bittersweet' would be the word.

Highly recommended. <<less

A transmigrated Japanese woman disguised as a boy fights in a war and inadvertently becomes a hero. She also acquires a devoted knight.

The premise is simple but beautifully well done. The translation is amazing, and the story is introspective about the costs of war and duty. Of course, the best part is the relationship between a woman and the knight who swears to serve her. Most other novels paint it as romantic and the epitome of chivalry, but what this one does is examine the burden of having someone's life... more>> in your hands.

The flow of the story is also amazing. It is neither too rushed or too slow. In all, the perfect two volumes. The ending is slightly bittersweet but real to the story.

P.S. There is a love triangle here between the magician, knight, and her hired butler, but I think this is one of the few novels where the triangle works for the growth of the characters. Usually, I detest love triangles in general.

Thank you to the translator though. They seem to be having some issues with their translations being stolen, which is horrible. But I hope they don't give up when they have so much talent! <<less

VERY GOOD!

It starts off like a fantasy story, but really it's an emotional one about one's reason for existence.

A juxtaposition to the happy go lucky isekai story, this heroine despairs at her fate, of what purpose she has in this utterly foreign world. Filled with nihilism, optimistic fatalism and a love for the sole anchor of her world, she sets out to war... Which is at its ends in the prologue!

With a supporting sad dog of a ML and a fleshed out cast, you got a mature isekai!

3.5/5 Not to put anyone off the novel, this was a very enjoyable read, and well translated too. I was hooked by the story, the FL was a well developed, multi dimensional character, and I really did like the novel.... until a certain point, late in the novel, where the actions and decisions of the FL seriously had me questioning the plot...

The plot points that didn't make sense to me: *major spoilers, do not read if you intend on reading the novel*... more>>
Spoiler

I just couldn't understand why the FL, supposedly being the only one in the world capable of understanding Kanaukaleid, chooses to jump straight to trying to kill it.

And knowing ML would give up on life if she died, goes ahead and chooses to single handedly take on Kanaukaleid, almost dying.. set up healers or something for goodness sake.

And how FL suddenly considered Graham a close friend of hers, with one simple apology from him, despite him having treated her like a pest beforehand - and for no reason aside from Graham is homophobic and thinks ML being gay would ruin ML's life.... the complete 360 he made as soon as he heard her gender is just horrid personality

[collapse]

The ending is enjoyable though, nice intelligent ending. *major spoiler *
Spoiler

I enjoyed the fake hero inspirations, FL truly managed to change people it seems and inspire the best in others. Was a shame she did not reveal herself to be a woman and change the societal expectations which impeded her best friend. Would have been easy to ask for a fake another female face, reveal her gender, then disappear (ie live as her real face for the rest of the time). And if her disguise makeup magician cannot handle it (likely so), just ask him to pretend to be Halka, then for him to turn into fake her. Supposedly it's easier to transform self than others, so presumably makeup magician can manage this.. But this part doesn't bother me much, the ending was still enjoyable

This is one of the transmigration novel that feels real for me. The author did a good job potraying MC's emotion after being forcefully summoned to another world by mistake. Unlike other transmigration novel where MC easily accepts her fate and adapts rather quickly in the new world, MC in this novel isn't have that easy.

Spoiler

She had lost her purpose of life and always tried so hard to hide her resentment although it slowly made her lose her mind. Being a "hero" and meeting Ricardo give her a new purpose of life and also help her overcome her emotion.

[collapse]

I don't quite like ML though. I think he only worsened MC's depression because he's also depressed himself and he always clinged to MC like a child. I like 2nd ML more because he understands MC well and he's strong enough to share MC's burden.

As for the ending:

Spoiler

It's a happy ending of course, at least for MC and ML. As for 2nd ML, I'm a bit sad because he still couldn't forget MC till the end. I hope he can find happiness too.

I still wish that MC could regain her original name again after changing to her original appearance, but sadly it doesn't happen. It's kind of sad that she lose her magic after all the things she had done but I think it's for the best because she just want to have a peaceful life.

I also think that Kanaukaleid is pitiful too. I hope that MC could free him without having to kill him or at least grant him a painless death but MC clearly made his death miserable (she even brought his head to capital). Maybe that's why I couldn't give this novel a 5 stars.

WOW. Just wow. I honestly loved this story and wish I could give it 5/5 but there are some things I wished could've been better.

Incredible things that makes this story so incredible:

  • not your normal isekai for so many reasons but mainly due to the exploration of how REAL the FL's emotions are. This made the story, for me.
  • the complexity of the FL
  • not everyone is just good or bad
  • touching on society and how we don masks + mental health
  • the translation quality is *chef's kiss*
Things I wish could've been better:

  • the POV changes rather often and I honestly didn't see the point in including the young boy's POV
  • some things were drawn out more than necessary, which is a delicate balance when you only have 2 volumes to utilise in telling a short story/light novel
  • exploring the ML's backstory more and his opening up to both his feeling and his past with the FL
  • sometimes it was a little unclear who was speaking so I wish there was some better indication
  • the summary on this page - it doesn't give the story justice at all! It makes it seem light and fluffy (which is has a few parts but it's much better than that)
  • Spoiler

the ML mitigating his depression when he starts to better understand what the FL has been through. His depression is just as justified, coming from someone who's experienced it and understands how it can affect anyone no matter what background

    [collapse]
Overall I'd give this a 4.3/5 rating if I could!

Again, LOVE LOVE LOVE the authenticity, rawness, and REALNESS of the FL with her actual emotions about being ripped away from her own world. Also LOVE LOVE LOVE the depth of some parts of the story like the mental health talk.

This is a deeply moving story about humanity, identity, and how dehumanizing it is to the individual forced to be the "hero, " who is a flesh-and-blood person who has their own needs, motivations, and dreams.

This story is very much unlike most "transmigration" stories, it is so much better than that. But if you're looking for a short, lighthearted story, you may not want to read this one. If you're looking for a heroic, human protagonist, I highly recommend reading this story: it is one that I will re-read many... more>> times in the future. <<less

GOOD

P.S This is the Light Novel

P.P.S. This is my first review and its probably really bad but... (;﹏;)

... more>> A really simple straightforward short story, that has a superb translation (like god-tier level).

The story although short has direction and a lot of emotion which I find you don't see much in JP/KR ETC novels as they are usually amateur writers whose perhaps coming off from translations seem very flat or just sort of jumping on the bandwagon of the isekai trend with an OP MC with no sense of actual direction, story or character.

This short novel however although not 'perfect' is a delightful read due to the believable emotions you get out of the story, they don't feel forced y'know like having a character have to go through a 'Dark Arc' where they numb their sense of self etc, it usually (for me at least) comes off very forced and just for convenience sake for either A. Cool protagonist Background or B. How MC became OP unfeeling cool mega awesome guy.

I personally just feel Haruka's raw emotion of frustration, anger, grief, selfishness all seem accounted for and feel believable and right.

I also wholeheartedly agree with samspd71 comments about the novel however, I am more forgiving in small errors as I know that the author of this work is an amateur and it is technically a short story etc.

The characters you can't really talk about much, except the two leads; however that is fine as the story is essentially about them. Secondary characters don't really come off as plot convenience characters or as 2D.

Their characters aren't very deep such as with the leads but are still believable albeit very short cameos, but that is only really due to it being a short story and there really is no need to expand on the secondary characters all that much.

I do feel though with Alfred, it was not unnatural or make you feel 'oh this is wrong'. It just feels like a mistake you overlook but are still able to understand the story? Maybe if the story was longer Alfred could of developed more.

I agree with LazyDays saying it was a story about one's reason for existence, in a less heavy way (its quite lighthearted but not to the measure it is 'fluffy') and that it is a mature isekai (as in the sense it feels more grown up instead of 'let's rule the world *pew pew*') Overall I really enjoyed the direction of the story and the pacing (not too fast not too slow).

Also the artwork matches well with the story! <<less

This was both very well written and heart-wrenchingly beautiful. It was definitely not as light hearted as expected, and no regrets in reading it. It was refreshing in it's realism of actually being summoned in another world, being taken away from everyone you know and that know you. Not many novels describe this and this one does it amazingly.

Halka is a very strong person, or well, she learned to be one for herself, and for the people around her. Despite that, her strength is aided by her weakness. She is... more>> a weak person that is driven to live, for at least one person to remember her as 'her' and not the persona she has created.

I found the two main characters' relationship ironic in a way. In the beginning, you would think Halka is the one who saved Richardo from despair and loneliness. But it's mutual. They save each other. This is somewhat so heartbreaking.

I find the old teacher's guilt and hope to atone, to at least bring some hope to Halka, really pitiful and saddening. That part was probably one of my favorite. It really left me with the impact the old teacher genuinely regretted summoning her and learned from his sins. Finally! One person who acknowledges how messed up they are in their deeds and seek to atone for their sins for the rest of their lives.

Spoiler

Especially the part where she describes how he tried to recreate things - like the bear - from her world. Broke my heart, man.

Anyways, definitely reccomended! I binged it in one go. You won't regret reading this amazing story! <<less

This is one of the best translations I have ever read. At times I had to question weather the translator was not actually the author. This story dose not follow the topical trops for this genre. In fact it takes a look at what is usually glossed over. The author's pacing of the story and the switching of POV are skillful executed with out making the reader feel disoriented, bored, or rushed. The ending while painfully bitter sweet dose not leave you wanting over all it is a very satisfying.... more>> On a personal not I am upset that it took me so long to find this story and truly only found it because the manga was only on chapter two and I desperately wanted to know what happened and couldn't stand the wait. This is a lovely novel that greatly highlights the two main titular characters, the Golden Knight and the Cross dressed Magician.

Our unreliable heroine is the most developed character in the book: her maturity, her depth of emotions, her humanity and her conundrums of being in a world entirely foreign to her is laid bare to the readers.

If you're looking for a novel that delves heavily into romantically fluffy action, you'll likely be disappointed. This novel portrays the raw sides of sacrifice and the ideals of someone strong and admired by... more>> the masses.

Haruka is an admirable character and she really shows what it means to be human and to have unnerving conviction despite one's setbacks. 10/10, I won't forget this novel. Many thanks to the TL, Sephi who did it too. <<less
