Sixty Years ago, one middle aged man brought a Qilin that looked like a pug and a mandarin duck that looked exactly like a duck, walking into the Imperial City of the Central Plains for the first time.

That year, this middle aged man crossed the Mountains and Seas Ridge, passed through the Four Seasons Plain and walked into Qingluan Academy.

Sixty Years later, Lin Xi sat on an old carriage, starting from Deerwood Village, he passed half the Yun Qin Empire and went straight north, going to Qingluan Academy…

This is a story involving the honor of an Empire, of loyalty and betrayal, involving youth and hot blood, involving a young man with a different perspective of the world, and a strong cultivating academy.

Slow first volume, almost everything after that is great. Second half of last volume is just bad, there is no sugarcoating it.

I don't even feel like doing a proper review; I'm still socked the author actually did such an awful last volume, considering the rest of the novel is of such high quality that I know he could do better. Heck, the actual ending of the novel is mostly independent of the last volume.

Basically, you have "last battle" end volume15/early volume 16 (last volume), then once you think "oh it's... more>> done" random antagonist appear, author try to deepen the plot etc, but then it doesn't matter since once this new antagonist is beat down everything will proceed as if nothing happened anyway. Because this protagonist is just that detached from the rest of the story. It is just so out of place that I can't understand what triggered the author into doing this kind of last arc. Was he just desperate to write a few more chapters to make some more money? Sad.

Even if we forgive how detached the antagonist and his actions is to the rest of the story, and how weird it is for such an antagonist to "randomly" appear at this point, the real problem is that he looks like a kid throwing a tantrum. We basically went from an epic confrontation involving people with deep motivations and characters, to a random kid with inflated ego who randomly got too much power in his hand and decided to throw a massive tantrum. This is incredibly bad considering how good and realistic the rest of the novel is.

I rewrote the end of the novel in my head to link the "last battle" in volume 15 to the final chapter, since it makes more sense in my opinion. Better pretend most of the last volume never actually happened.

Anyway rant over. <<less

It's a reincarnation novel with a bit of a twist in that the MC finds out that he might not be the only one to have reincarnated from this world. We get to follow him as he tries to find traces of this other person, and as he builds up connections he never would have expected to have. I managed to make it to the end, and I wholly recommend this book. 4.5/5

What I liked:

It's a fairly smart novel. The fights don't typically go on for very long (with one... more>> glaring exception). There are some civil problems, some politics, some cultivation. The biggest point of the cultivation in this novel is that nobody is "invincible, " and the cultivators are actually rather rare through the world. Unlike some other books, the MC doesn't just randomly trip over young masters of powerful families every time he tries to eat at a restaurant. If he becomes a target, there is a definite reason and something of a backstory.

What I didn't like:

The title given is incredibly misleading. It really should have been called "Tales of Immortals and Devils." The MC does not have an innate power to transform into an immortal or a devil.

Some parts were rather hard to read because the author actually moves away from the MC for quite a few chapters, and writes about everything else going on in the world.

Book 16. Seriously the first half of the final book in this series was a horrible slog. They payoff at the end and the way the author ended the book was good, but the major story arc ended in book 15, and the way the author continued the story was really bad. <<less

This one really deserves a review. By now I think I can count as novel veteran. I started with the ieattomatos novels on Wuxiaworld when the translations just started.

All cultivation novels are obviously based on an established mentality: Usually there is some type of leveling system to give the reader the ability to judge strengths, the MC has some special trait or even obvious cheats, some antagonists appear regularly and typically end up defeated.

I think, by now, it's very difficult to write something, which fulfills the genre, but is not... more>> completely predictable. In this novel, the author definitely manages to get in twists and turns, which are not that obvious.

Vague spoiler:
Spoiler

Not every antagonist becomes "the mortal enemy" and some enemies appear, which are not expected. Some enemies turn out to be a bigger deal than expected, some do not matter much anymore.

[collapse]

I like it a lot when there are many characters, which get their own story and are not forgotten. All those little strings, which influence the bigger picture, but not to the extent of being obvious to "provide" too much detailed spoilers.

Also a very huge romance plus from my personal taste:

Spoiler

I hate the damsel in distress troupe. Somehow it's used everywhere, but in this story only very very slightly.

It is not what I expected. For the first few chapters (and the journey) you get the mysterious transmigrator (?) who wants to experience the world as a tourist, detached and aloft. He often talks nonsense and he got this super-powerful ability of rewinding time to help him discover the secrets of the world.

And then Bam! Suddenly everything is like a cheap version of Harry Potter, the MC turns ret*rded and get s**ked into a "guts & glory" cult, his ability becoming a cheap gimmick really fast.

What should have happened:... more>>
Spoiler

The MC should have used his "bystander perspective" to not join a cult of war fanatics during his heavens choice ("self defense" my ass). Instead he should have turned back time and selected the same department as his love interest. Also he should be way more cheeky and test the limits of the professors - I mean he tried to assassinate the carriage driver! Lastly: What happened to his dagger? Why did he choose the sword?

[collapse]

Basically everything turns boring and cliche as soon as he enters the academy. Not interested, 3*. <<less

if you looking for a good for relaxing read with a many good comedy, than don't... the comedy seem non-existencce only in vol.1 the rest of it til vol.5 I never again laugh or smile like an idiot (i smile sometime when it is about romance but for me comedy regarding love is different from daily life comedy), looks like if you want to enjoy this story your brain must in full throtle, if you not thingking deeply about what is writen than the only result this novel will look... more>> as a nuisance full nonsense too much world building, personality dechipering. <<less
