I read DD twice now, read the manga and the novel, but honestly I can’t help but Feeling dislike torward xiao wu— true maybe she love tang san that much, but her personality I just cannot find the way to growing fond of her.

Spoiler
[collapse]
Esp when da ming and er ming died, he truly hope to resurrected them and even knowing how much the price tang san has to pay when resurrected one, even tho she didn’t ask tang san directly— but her actions like putting the 2 corpse in yin & yang poison well in hope they can get resurrected like tang san’s mom— even tang san knew it, xiao wu really hope for it, so if xiao wu really think, care and love tang san and consider his aftermath effect, she wouldn’t do that.

Spoiler
[collapse]
And then the reason she suddenly got Her actual identity as a spirit beast found out by bi bi dong, by sudden clumsiness which she should know her current ability and situation requires her at least not doing some rookie mistakes which leading the tragedy afterwards.

Spoiler
[collapse]
then in sea god island, she really want to stick to tang san and even threatened to not left her when doing some dangerous situations and trial which in time when she really couldn’t help that much, and tang san would aways focus on her safety so it will be a distraction— annoying.

Spoiler
[collapse]
Xiao wu just didn’t seem like hundred thousand years old spirit, with the way she’s acted— because hundred thousand year old spirit logically trying to survive the jungle and cultivate should tempered her mind and personality to be mature one and not bubbly like her. Also Probably I don’t like her bcoz she sometimes doing/thinking something with good intentions but in the end just annoying.

i dont know from beggining I even wondered why tang san can like her— her personality is sooo.. —..— but overall this is an enjoyable story, except xiao wu and the ending seems being done abruptly and missing some details and has several plotholes; you guys should read this. <<less

I've re-read this after so long and though it's not exempt of plot holes, it's nevertheless entertaining. Definitely comes under the 'decent cultivation novels' category, in which there aren't many. Pros:

• Interesting power system and good world building

• The MC is calm and strategic. Not that s*upidly haughty type

• Good romance except for some dog blood scenes like "she blushed and hid her face in his chest"

• The explanation is very detailed and lengthy. I personally like it that way since it helps me visualise better

• Decent female representation. This is one of the main reasons I was comfortable reading it. • Even with some inconsistencies, the over-all logic is not compromised.

• No green tea b*tches or jealous fights over men. The women have their own goals and a mind of their own.

• Most of the characters r intelligent as opposed to the typical 1D mentality of chinese novels.

•There is no 'girls falling for him at every step'. Even the women who like him don't abandon their goals for him, even if it means standing against him. It feels natural.

• Though he's OP, nothing is easily gained. From tournaments to inheritance, everything is hard earned, even facing some setbacks

• Good friendship and familial relations

• Though it doesn't keep u on edge, it's really enjoyable

Cons:

• Even with so many badass women, this novel still has some sexist undertones, but still better than other Chinese novels in this aspect

• Repetitive sentences, as if to fill the word count.

• Some characters just disappear and r no longer mentioned

• No character growth for anyone. Only Ning Rong Rong has some. I don't really dislike this way, but yeah.

• Reckless bets. It even feels like the author creates some not so logical scenarios just to imply that Tang San staked his life for it or to display his OPness

• Sometimes, Tang Hao's logics contradict themselves.

•The characters preparing to sacrifice their lives without even thinking about the people relying on them bothers me

• Tang San's character feels monotonous. Always painted in that white light. Though I don't dislike it, I wish he were a bit more interesting.

• I also have a problem with Chinese novel characters and their arrogance when they r first introduced.

• I sometimes feel that despite his careful nature, he makes promises too easily.
Spoiler

I mean, imagine if his mother was reborn as a little girl rather than her 30 year self. Just thinking about it is so awkward

[collapse]

• The filial piety thing in the novel is a bit too much for me. "Children have no right to resent their parents" *eye roll*

• There r both logical and also some unbelievably illogical scenarios. It's bearable though. Not a bother.

• Though I enjoyed the romance for the most part, I sometimes couldn't relate to those deep feelings.
Spoiler

For ex; In his seagod final test, he didn't refuse XW even if he knew it wasn't real. Then xw goes "he doesn't want to refuse me even if it's just an illusion" I was like 🧐

[collapse]
Not only TS and XW but also the Shrek seven devils. They don't even hesitate to die together for the sake of their friends. Though it feels warm, it doesn't make much sense that they won't even hesitate.

• From the arc where he leaves the battlefield for his final trial, it got boring. Even slaughter City arc was relatively boring.

Some other thoughts

Spoiler

Qian Renxue and Hu Liena's love to TS feels pathetic at one point but is understandable. To them, who dedicated their lives to their own goals, life and death situations and battles with TS sparked admiration and feelings of love, which couldn't be erased that easily.

• When I first read DD1, I wanted TS and XW to be nothing more than siblings. It's only later that I adapted to the events of the novel.

• MHJ and BCX romance feels forced. There's no proper drive nor chemistry.

• During his battle with QRX, his plot armour was too strong lmao. That was a God, okay?

Man, this novel has a good start and good concept and thats it. At first there's an exciting feeling because you would look forward on what would happen to the said "tr*sh spirit" of the MC, and how he would break that convention and prove that theres no tr*sh spirit. But when his teacher revealed that MC's River Grass was different and much stronger than other River Grass and was also a topnotch spirit and comparable to his other spirit (hammer), man, it greatly disappointed me, because it means that... more>> he did not break any convention, because his grass was not a tr*sh from the start. So whats the point of making this story?? If the MC already got everything from the start. He have talent, experience (in past life), knowledge, two OP spirit, and have no freaking weakness, so whats the point of making this story? Man the MC here was too fcking perfect to the point that it doesnt make me excite anymore, because he was perfect so everything would be expected. Im hooked in this novel because I enjoyed how the MC used his only weakness (that is his tr*sh spirit) to battle anyone, and I would find out in middle that his weakness was actually not a weakness but rather one of his strongest spirit here. So whats the point of this stpd author? All of the OPness was given to this MC, so we could already guess how he would become the strongest because he has no fckimg weakness. In fact the MC should be ashamed because he have a fckimg two OP spirits, experience, knowledge, but he was still being catch up by his friends. I dont know if this author was stpd or have no brain.

And the cheekiness to its highest level in this novel also ruined this, man, the way the MC was too deeply addicted in love to the point that he even made his girl as his own world. Man, that was beyond stpd. Im not a bitter person, in fact, I have a girlfriend, but man, to made one person your world? That was beyond stpd man. I would accept it if its his families and friends including his girl, but man, just one person? And the way the MC spoiled his spd girlfriend. And how his girl also acts, was too annoying. Man his girl was too reckless and stpd.

And when they battled blazing academy, this stpd MC blocked an attack for his opponent, and because of that he's seriously injured so his teammate had no choice but to offer her lifespan just to heal him and I did not even feel that he felt guilt, because he save his opponent but it causes harm to his friend, and his reason for that? "I dont want to see anyones little sister to be hurt" Wtf, so you would sacrifice your own life to save every little sisters you saw? To the point that you even bring harm to your friends. What a twisted idea of this fcking author, I really pitied his family and friends.

And the way that he made the MC reveal his identity in public was really beyond stpd. Man, he did not even think that he would exposed his friends in harm if he reveal his identity. And even if he avoid his friends, did he not really think that they would leave him alone? Of course not, so he would still exposed them to harm. This stpd MC did not have any resolve, just so that he would make himself feel that he was not a coward, he would let his loved ones be exposed in harm. Tbh, I even want to see one of the 7 shrek died at that time for this stpd MC know how stpd his decision are. This stpd MC or rather stpd author, I think this author would also let his loved ones in harm so that he would not let himself be called a coward. This stpd sht author really get into my nerve, he would make the smart MC do something that was beyond stpd so that he could forcefully add his new scenario, hmp I really want to slap you. And this stpd author also made the concept of this novel as 'dog eat dog world' and 'law of the jungle' but he made the main characters afraid of killing. "We have to treasure lives" but they hunt and kill spirit beast. Sighh hypocrisy.. <<less

MANNNNN. Im pissed. Don’t get me wrong, it really is a good novel and I encourage everyone to read it. However, I feel like although they have Douluo dalu 1-4, this particular douluo dalu still had alot of things that could be explored.

Spoiler

The main thing i’m pissed off about is the ending. They didn’t have to be so f*cking abrupt. I’m sure everyone would have loved to see a few more chapters of all of their weddings, loving life and the rest of them ascending to godhood. This then leads me to my next point. I believe that there is so many things that could have been wrote about about the god realm. However to be honest, even if they didn’t write about the god realm, it would still be fine, what i’m more pisses about is my first point, how they won’t let us see the seven monsters plus bai chenxiang living their life even if its only for like 20-30 chapters. Another reason why I wasn’t as pissed on them not expanding on the god realm is because there are still 3 more douluo dalu and i’m pretty confident that they would at least gloss over it for an arc. However, we would never see the eight of them anymore which is soooooooo annoying. Like just give use a few chapters where we can see them lead their lives happily. FFS

[collapse]

Nevertheless, aside from the ending leaving me less than satisfied, I can safely say that this is one of the best wuxia novels that I’ve read. <<less

This is the best chinese novel i've ever read. I must say, the story is good and the development of the characters isn't neglected like other story. This novel concept is also unique and not like other novel whose the main character have a harem, this is a positive point for me.

After so many years, this novel have completed it's translation. Thank you for the translators that have been working hard to translate this novel. :)

I have to say this is one is an original writing considering it's a chinese novel. Well-my review is a bit late since it was written in 2008. I've read this ages ago and never bother to be a humanitarian to give the reviews it needed.

Nowadays everything is a cliche or knock-off of someone else ideas. So try this. Don't think it's cliche or so cause it wasn't written yesterday.

Story got a good plot with a good background story supporting it. Don't bother watching the anime as it will ruin... more>> everything that the novel portrays the story in its intricacy. The anime focuses too much on superficial things like graphics and stuff. It leaves you with no imagination of what the story itself is supposed to be like it should.

Character build up-check. Romance - check.

Plot-check. Adventure-check.

Making friends and not forgetting or leaving them behind -check.

Comedy-check.

No vulgar or mol*station -check. Don't read if you expecting such pe*verted things or something like 'tr*sh' this-'waste' that and so on.

My example to bring a contrast of the novel to the anime would be like:

my idea from the novel - MC comes from villages in the boonies. Basically a bumpkin with shabby clothes.

anime - everyone dress up neat in fancy clothes-there are no distinction of any sort from the novel. No one looks ugly or below the standards in the anime. Supposedly the novel depicts cities where numerous ppl walks around. Anime-just the characters needed for the scene will be in the scene.

Another note: anime lacks/skipped alot of information needed.

ps on FYI: anime video is about 12-15 minutes at best--which includes intro-ending credits. So you're left with about 10 min. Of content. <<less

So I’ve just finished the book and I have to vent my disappointment. It was really good up until the ending. The ending wasn’t satisfactory at all. Especially the last 6-10 chapters. They were really crappy, honestly. It’s like the author didn’t know how to end it so he made the characters act out of character but it made the story go downhill. I’m especially frustrated with the Portrayal of the god level powers. The author should have just left Gods out of it and made a better ending. Most... more>> of it really had no point. So I recommend reading this book but don’t be surprised when u read the crappy end. But rest of the story makes up for it. <<less

Good to start with, but got annoyed with the corny stuff, which isn't really an issue in & of itself, but the fact it has to be constantly repeated to fkn death has become really grating. The strongest part about DD is arguably it's characters and the character development (with possibly the exception of the MC; see below). Seeing the main group of characters grow together and the dialogue and interactions is refreshing as they essentially all remain relevant and not-forgotten all the way to the end. There are bits of comedy thrown in between them, and each has their own personality and powers which make the group combat more interesting.

The plot is decent for the most part. It starts pretty well, gets interesting and emotional... more>> in the middle, but the ending had me a little disappointed, as it felt like a clusterf*ck of abilities and powers and scope of the battles went crazy.

The writing style of the author is borderline acceptable but definitely could improve. A huge reason why DD started to get boring for me was in the middle when I just couldn't keep reading the same junk play-by-play descriptions of battles and abilities. The number of times I've had to read phrases like "But don't let this make you underestimate the [ability/effect]" or "Nobody would have expected him to do that..." etc. just makes me crazy cause it happens so often. Not to mention, as the plot progresses and each character (mainly MC) gets tens/hundreds of new abilities, then the author feels obligated to write 2-4 paragraphs on excess information about the ability almost everytime said ability is used. It got to a point where I just skim through this excessive junk on information so I could keep up with the battle.

The world building in the story is excellent. From Shrek Academy to the Seagod Island and more, the atmosphere of the continent feels interesting and most places they go to are unique in some way.

The reason for me why the MC isn't a great character is cause he is almost too perfect. I don't mean this in terms of strength or power but he's too adaptable/his plot armour of being able to turn unwinnable situations into an easy victory gets annoying. Fortunately, he can and does lose battles and grows from them, but he literally is OP at sometimes. His group combat role is to control the battlefield with his abilities, which he does an exceptional job with his teammates and their trust, but it almost develops to a point where he can literally read opponents (including opponents who his group has never met before) miles in advance. An unforeseen situation shows up and BOOM you can almost always expect the MC to have already thought about it miles in advance and counter it. However, his parent's background story and his own story b/w him and ML is emotional and good for the plot's development.

Also, the translations are decent.

About the hidden weapons:

Spoiler

At the beginning, they were definitely cool and a good tool for the MC, as well as later on when he founded Tang Sect to give them a chance to fight back against Spirit Hall. It's also a decent tool for the author to use when MC is in trouble. But it just feels like even though some have ridiculous requirements to craft, the strongest ones are too OP in the final battle. Some of them are just instakills on a bunch very high ranked spirit masters, and in particular, the Guanyin's Tear was definitely some random asspull the author pulled just to save MC. Almost 1 shotting and piercing Qian Renxue's heart while she's an Angel God (albeit not perfectly mastered her god abilities) was too much. Especially how it was an "incomplete version", even if it was the "#1 ranked hidden weapon" (which I swear the #1 weapon was previously stated to be the Buddha Fury Tang Lotuses; isn't that what he made before he committed su*cide and reincarnating???).

[collapse]

Overall 3.75-4.

It started off strong but slowly leveled out or declined due to the author's annoying and repeated writing style and somewhat confusing ending. Good plot and interesting world, cool characters that stay relevant, decent antagonist, OP protagonist, can be emotional. <<less

4-star. This should be 3.5 stars, but since it's my first ever Chinese web novel, I bumped it up a bit. The reason it's not 5 star is because I can't stand the romance. It's just too much.. And very specifically targets the 12-15 year old crowd. The world and cultivation is interesting and original. The fights are good. But the pacing is a bit off. The seagod island arc was way too long.. It literally got boring. We know they'd pass the trials, but there was no real excitement.... more>> More like, hurry up and finish so we can get back to the real story. Stuff like that. Characters are fun. One of the best novel out there. Possibly a masterpiece. The characters are not two dimensional and seems very much alive. This novel made me believe that xianxia/wuxia novels too can have a fulfilling romance. The MC is cunning, OP and passionate to his lover, not a harem maniac. Seriously... even if an angelic naked woman comes before him he will no bat an eye, he only has eyes for his Xiao Wu. Same for the female lead, they are really passionate.

The plot and the story line is unique and... more>> different from your usual Wuxia, as expected from TJSS. The cultivation process is unique too. This novel does not have your usual bland s*upid arrogant characters that can't see MT. Tai.

The only issue is the translation speed is insanely slow which is why I was forced to read it via mtl. This novel has only 336 chapters but after several years we are only at chapter 216 and who knows how many years it will take to finish this awesome novel. So if you can endure the slow speed, it's a must read. <<less

I don't know if it is the author or the translator but this novel is really really really well written, from the characters description to the scene settings to the plot explanation. This is the type of novel that can make you feel that you are in their world, experience what they experience. Of all the Chinese Web Novels with OP Main Protagonists, Douluo Dalu is top class. The world building in the story is first rate, and the characters have amazing development. The Protag has a well developed personality that is calm and calculating, but has little arrogance and plenty of heart. Sure we still get the random antagonists that are introduced one chapter and defeated only a few chapters later, but the characters that matter and interact with the Protag get the perfect amount of development. Story does well in dropping... more>> clues to future plot points without screaming "look at them" and lets you figure them out on your own until the big reveal.

Overall, I'd say if you're looking for a supernatural martial arts story with plenty of good fights, character development, and a ton of world building, then this series is right for you. <<less

The last 10 plus reviews are mostly similar to my views, so no need to add more detail.

in short for me: basically for a beginner or someone who likes a simple cultivation trope, it’s great, especially first 2/3 of the chapters with world building and character development. My view of the last 50 chapters is that the story just went on and on and I just wanted it to end. But at the last chapter it does end in such an abrupt way. Basically the story stops at the last... more>> battle where the antagonist is defeated and no more details on how the protagonist and his entourage that you have followed for most chapters are living their “after” war lives.

Anyways, the animation was what made interested to read the novel. The donghua was currently at him getting the three ant spirit circles. I must say that the novel does give more relevant detail that the animation didn’t show, but their story telling is definitely more exciting to watch. <<less

love 1/2. First half was good. Second half was meh; everything was repeat repeat. Ending was tr*sh and was super unsatisfying.

Author wants you to read the next installment rather than explain anything that happened at the end which doesn’t even get explained. The reader has to infer what happens at the end. And then he expects to also read the 9 other sequels (which are 10x longer no joke) and piece together what happened to the gang???? Um no.

I did reread up to the seagod arc tho. It’s like Pokémon,... more>> a kid growing up and becoming more powerful every chapter. MC is the win-win-win type of character. Even when he loses, he still wins <<less

To be honest this is a great entry novel to the cultivation genre. It's simple and basic.

I'll also preface this by saying that I've been corrupted by fanfiction for this particular novel. Most of them are Tang San bashing fanfics.

So let's begin with Tang San. He's too perfect. That's one of the major downsides of the novel. The author goes way out of his way to make Tang San cool and stuff. This is a massive turn off as every time he faces a choice he will earn the best... more>> of both worlds. One Fanfic writer noted that the author will make whatever convenient excuse to give Tang San something cool like the Eight Spider Lances.

The longer you read and nitpick at it you start to realize that the author as zero clue how to develop Tang San other than being cool. A majority of the novel his excuse is I want to strong to destroy spirit hall. That's literally it for his resolve. Later on Xiao Wu gets caught and sacrifices to Tang San however later she get resurrected for absolute zero cost other than losing a couple of crap spirit rings that get replaced with better ones making that entire plot point moot.

Because of this Tang San comes off as a really poor character. This is especially vibrant once you remember he supposedly was from a sect that specially in assassin and hidden weapons yet he basically uses hidden weapons in broad daylight and no one even bothers noting this. Also the fact that a assassination sect got their secrets stolen by a outer sect disciple really makes me wonder if they were competent assassins.

This is also another point why the novel degrades. In the beginning Tang San kills himself for stealing the secrets of the Tang Sect but show zero remorse in claiming the techniques as his in Douluo.

Now for the better part of the novel. The villains are great. They are fleshed out and are a lot more relatable to than Tang San and his group. All of them have lost something to get to where they were. Bibi Dong basically gets r*pes and becomes the pope of Spirit Hall. Despite being one of the strongest characters in the novel lost her innocence for that position. There's also Qian Renxue who sacrificed her childhood and female identity to infiltrate Tian Dou Empire as a prince to win without losing any people from Spirit Hall.

Simply put this novel has a weird relationship in how the characters are like. The villains are far more likeable due to their circumstances and the protaganist group is relatively tossed a one trick resolve. <<less

Really good novels for the first 2/3 of the chapters

i stopped again after 280. Real good start but the MC becomes way too overpowered, he basically becomes star wars rey. So if you really liked star wars 8 to 9, you should like this novel. Else I would read this novel. I reccommend forty millenium of cultivation, against the gods, overlord, warlock in a magus world and strike the witches if you haven’t read them. Btw I like strong MC, some overpowered MC too, but his MC is too much... more>> a mary sue in the latter parts. <<less
