Y'all know those movies and stories that are basically slice of life that leaves you feeling empty and soulless when it's done. Yeah, this novel did this to me. The entire story felt like a biography of the character's life. The ending gave me a bittersweet feeling. That's just how life is... bittersweet.

I truly loved this novel.

I tend to not leave reviews on stories I like that already have high ratings but I just couldn't pass up on this.

To preface, I personally do not enjoy the genre of in*est but I'm also someone who can recognise and enjoy a good novel despite it's content.

I actually came across this novel and read it long ago but I never thought to leave a review because most people seemed to agree that this was a good piece of literature. However, I decided to revisit this page and by doing... more>> so I got to revisit and reread some of the reviews left on here by other readers. Personally, whilst I'm glad that many people could appreciate this novel for what it is, I couldn't help but feel as though many people completely overlooked the genuine significance of each of the events presented to us and how all of this discusses the concept of human nature.

A review on here said something along the lines of looking past ethics and morals but I think it's actually important to read this novel with those concepts in mind. Xu Ping, the MC is undeniably human. Time and time again he was forced to reflect, to feel ridden with the guilt that came with his feelings. Because morally, it was wrong.

There will be spoilers here onwards:

Spoiler

I think his relationship with one of the other male characters in the book, whom I forgot the name of is also very important. It highlights how the guilt Xu Ping felt and his desperation eventually drove him to entangle himself with something or someone he knew was dangerous.

I also think that Xu Ping getting cancer was also important. He thought his life was ending and after a long journey of suffering I think he finally felt it was his turn to be selfish. He was going to die. There was no point in fighting anymore.

Lastly, the topic of his brother's mental disabilities. Personally, I tend to scrutinise the use of mental health especially when it's done badly due to my experiences and the experiences of those around me but I think this was really well done. Sure this novel had smut here and there but I think those scenes were important to expand upon Xu Ping's conflicted feelings. Regardless, I don't think this novel necessarily stigmatised or sexualised mental health... I think that it actually portrayed the capabilities of those with mental disabilities a lot better than many other novels. There are individuals out there who are in a state much worse than Xu Zheng. A young man who can work, can get around on his own, can bathe, can exercise, is in good health... Xu Zheng, is by no means, portrayed as useless. But he also had to rely on his brother. It was an element important in crafting the story's narrative. If Xu Zheng could clearly say yes or no, or clearly express that he understood what he was doing and who he was doing it with, Xu Ping would probably not be harrowed by the same moral dilemmas that haunted him. Sure there'd probably still be guilt and the feel of taboo but the guilt would be shared, not placed on Xu Ping alone.

I finished this book just now... and I am still in daze. Just mixed emotions.

I honestly read it out of curiosity... and kept going because of that reason.

It's not a bad read. It is good.

... more>> It's a slice of life kinda book. You will be emotionally drained with the problems and dilemma these two brothers have to love each other.

It is a fictional book, and so, I'll say that their love for each other is truly beautiful and I hate how the circumstances of the book keeps on getting worse for the two of them yingyingying.

It was an emotional roller coaster, so prepare the tissue papers before reading.

The Ending :

Spoiler

Thankfully, it's HE, but to reach that point, I'm already braindead

Well mostly I have problem with the author writing style because it makes everything very slow and boring. I skipped most of it (not the papa sences tho ?) and nearly dropped this story many times but their relationship kept me reading. When it came to the sad part I didnt feel anything tbh. The way the author described the surrounding were too much and some conversations weren't very necessary.

Overall all it's a sad love story. Xu Ping still a child raising another child, who is mentally challenged. The novel show three different stages in Xu Ping's life; in each you can feel his struggles and pain throughout the tragic events. It's a good read.

This story is written so well, it felt realistic. The topics of life, death, and growing up hit my feels and felt relatable. I cried so much reading this cause it was so sad since the beginning. The ending was happy and sort of open ended, leaving the reader to imagine what happened. I wish the author showed more of what happened between the brothers and their future together though I guess we won't have that in this story filled with tragedies.
Spoiler

Xu Zheng tying the laces is like a reverse of roles, Xu Ping will be taken care of now.

The brothers will always support each other, from the beginning to the end. I hope they live long and happy together. Although there is taboo theme, it's handled really well and this story really moved me and made me question life.

Completed the story.

This is the kind of story that I will never read again. Nevertheless, I love the experience the story it brought to me. It's beautiful in a way that brought warmth and pain in my heart.

There are times I wish that the ML was that other one. Probably I'm discriminating, a bit, in regards to the ability to protect.

... more>> Yet at the same time, it was also understandable that they two brothers paired up.

I even wonder, what if there was no ML, MC will probably end up in a BG story, as he said, he'll be straight without his brother. Imagine, intelligent and beautiful, how bright the MC's future would've been.

Bittersweet. This is a story with a type of genre I don't usually read, but I did due to intrigue given by the reviewers haha.

I did not cry while reading, but my heart was in pain. Truly bizarre. <<less

This story has brought me into the pit, the emotional turmoil, the emotional damage I had been through upon reading this masterpiece. It just hurts, it still hurts and I don't think that I could get over this pain. Xu Ping was so lost, I almost couldn't bear the excruciating pain he felt. I love him so much, you did well baby. To Xu Zheng, please honey live well. Live well for your brother. And to my favorite character, Huang Fan. I'm hurting for you, baby. I want you to be happy, I never hated you. I never did. You did great, please find your happiness. I'm rooting for you.

The only disappointment I felt for this story was probably when Huang Fan wasn't still accepted by Xu Ping.... more>> Even as just a friend. I wanted him to at least appreciate Huang Fan, this hurts so much. I want to write a fanfiction of them, they deserve better. Huang Fan's love for him was too much that he couldn't let go, but that's part of loving him. I love him so much. <<less

Alright for everyone that's wondering why Brother got so many one stars, I'm here to explain. Boy, I am so done with this f*cking novel. Everything was fine until chapter 27 when ... more>>
Spoiler

Huang Fan r*ped MC.

[collapse]

But back to
Spoiler

Huang Fan's r*pe attempt, first of all, r*pe is one hell of a sensitive topic. I couldn't stop crying when reading that part as r*pe can scar people so bad they become suicidal and use self harm to get rid of he r*pe marks. But how MC acts after is just so unrealistic. First of all, he just forgives Huang Fan. How? HOW CAN YOU FORGIVE SOMEONE AFTER SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPENS? It's such bullsh*t and he even goes to People's Square afterwards to save him, all because of a phone call filled with heavy breathing and pitiful words of, "I'm hurt" or "I just wanted to hear your voice one last time".

Is the author trying to write a love triangle? Someone tell me why a person would save their rapist in the middle of a rebellion. Why did he even continue talking when he knew it was Huang Fan? I'm surprised MC didn't want to kill Huang Fan after all that and instead vented his anger out on his beloved brother. All of this Huang Fan sh*t just ended up getting him arrested and separated from his brother, getting beat up by police men, getting interrogated and humiliated in court as people thought he had a s*xual gay relationship with Huang Fan, ruining his goal of going to Beijing University, and giving him a criminal record. After all that, I decided to read the last chapter of the series to see if the ending at least pushes me to keep reading but nothing changed. In fact, Huang Fan is STILL IN THE STORY WTF WHY.

[collapse]

Either way, the reason for the three stars is mostly because the beginning was written beautifully. As I've said before, the situations were realistic and nothing was thrown in just for the angst and drama. Their childhood taught them both a lot and it had beautiful life lessons said by the father and realizations of love and growing up by the MC. It builds a strong foundation for their modern day relationship. And when they grew up and MC had feelings for ML, it further complicated it but in a steady, paced way and it wasn't so bad. In fact MC's struggle of moving to university and leaving ML all alone is really concerning and the fact that ML was still in the same care centre when he was 8 was a huge slap in the face for me because back then, mentally disabled children would've been disowned immediately especially with the one child policy. Because of this, there aren't any professional mentally challenged education centres and only a daycare for ML to waste his life away in since he can't learn much. This also really opened my eyes to autism and encouraged me to help out at my high school's special-ed program.

Also, the translation was GOD TIER. I will offer both of my lungs and my heart if the translator ever needs them because it is seamless and fits so well. So in the end, if you like smut, tragedy and don't mind inscest BL and plot points that are sometimes ridiculous, go ahead and read it, you'll love it to tears. And also, prepare tissues because I swear to god you won't even have a heart after reading this. <<less

The story is great despite the taboo-theme in it. The author was very strict to details. It's easy to imagine the characters' movements, unlike other novels where you have to read and re-read again just to grasp what the author's talking about. It didn't actually felt like reading a novel but seeing the scenes unfold right in front of you. The words the author used were personal and intimate. It was like reading a diary. Felt like a voyeur, actually. Haha The smut is explicit, tho it was not much.... more>> NSFW chapters were *chef's kiss. Last time I was these immersed in a story was reading Hako no Naka and Utsukushii Koto.

Spoiler

My only issue was some characters sprouted like mushrooms. Maybe it was because the story was meant to be a quick read so the author hadn't had the time to splay details on other characters. The story really centered on the brothers. Like Huang Fan who I think played a major role in the story. And Mr. Zhang who secretly liked the brothers' father. It was left untouched. And Liu Jia, the one who bullied Xu Zheng. And Xu Ping's time in prison, that changed him into an adult, was just mentioned in passing.

So far so good. It managed to get me hooked. I sympathize with Xu Ping. He grew up with an almost uncaring father (Seriously, he didn't rlly seems to care about his oldest son's feelings), his brother who is mentally challenged which restricted him from doing a lot of things bc of his strict dad, and bullying. My little sister is a similar case but not as severe and my mom, boy, I live with jealousy and bitterness. My mom treated my sister will such care and pampering while I just have to suck it. My dad like to say that my mom's treatment of my sister is nothing like how she treated me. So I understand how Xu Ping felt with Xu Zheng and I admire him. He's protecting his brother and compromising with him is something I would never do. I would have just told him to f**k off.

Another thing is his dad. He's a little too unfair towards Xu Ping. Honesty he's pushing too much burden and blame on a 12 yr old boy. He's the dad he should be responsible for his younger son, not his own son. I get that he needed to work to feed them but his action is very selfish. He's being to harsh on Xu Ping

4 stars for now. I still need to read the whole story

This is not a novel for everyone. Go into it knowing that it's about an in*estuous relationship between brothers. I loved this very, very much though there are several characters that I would have been happy to see some sort of justice come to them. But that's beside the point because I want to focus on the relationship between the brothers. It's glaringly obvious that they love each other, though there's moments of hurt and pain between them and they cause it! When we see how much they... more>> need and rely on each other it's a beautiful story. I would have been happier if there had been open honesty between the elder brother and the one fella, but I think it happened the way it was supposed to be. I really loved this though there's multiple scenes that either made me mad or cry. It's worth the read, definitely. It's ultimately a beautiful melancholy story. <<less

This is so well written, so beautiful. It deals the emotions of the characters extremely well. I am in love with this story. It is heart breaking and breathtaking (lol, look who became a poet). But it has a happy ending so go ahead and read it everyone. If this story happened anyway different it wouldn't have the same ending.

It's a sentimental story. Not smutty in*est bang and done, get your golly off. It makes you understand the characters struggle and builds up the emotion that transcribe between the sibling. The story makes you feel sad inside at the end, but in a good way. I recommend it if you want a heartfelt story.

This is an uncomfortable read and it's very disturbing but I couldn't put the book down nonetheless. It's fantastic writing and if after reading the tags, you're still feeling adventurous I'd say go for it. If you can mute your ethics and morality then I think you can get through this (I had to).

Personally, I'd like to echo laurachisom's review in saying that if this was reality then this would and should definitely be against the law, so keep in mind this book really really isn't for everyone. The author... more>> does not take into account the ML lacks the ability to give proper consent due to his condition, hence the whole relationship, I would say is non-con/ dub-con when viewed logically. <<less

Great novel! I feel mentally drained after reading this. Exhausting. It made me cry so many times that my eyes are now puffy. Throughout the novel I kept thinking if maybe XuPing did something bad in his past life so now he's being punished for it.

His life s**ked. Ignoring the fact that he has heavy responsibilities due to his brother, his life still s**ked. It was miserable and tragic. I felt so suffocated trying to read this like I could really feel him slowly being drained by life. It feels... more>> like as the plot progresses, he is one step closer to depression, slowly losing the will to fight and live on. (The words his father said to him was etched on his mind so he could not let go and had to keep living on to continue taking care of his brother (.-.)) The things he did and said during their holiday made me feel like someone was clutching onto my neck because I felt so suffocated. F*CK I felt so sad for him. I can't believe nearing the end I actually hoped that he can die peacefully so that he will no longer have to withstand that pressure and can let go of his worries and be free. I know he loves his brother but I felt that as long as he continue living, he will have to continuously care for his brother. He will still be tired because his brother does not know how to take care of him.

There are different kinds of HE for a novel and the HE that I wished for for XuPing is death. I hoped that he could have let go and just float away without caring about anything but nope! :// It's not that I don't like XuZheng since hoping that XuPing die means that XuZheng will probably die soon since he can't care for himself. It's just that I really love XuPing's character that I really hope that he could finally rest. But I guess the HE that the author gave to us is also good, though I felt that more could have been elaborated and it was a little too rushed? One more chapter would have been great but it's fine I guess. Overall great read I guess. I'm in need of something fluffy right now to soothe my aching heart... <<less

The story was well written, it has a touch of melancholia that's why I felt calm yet empty whilst reading.

Uhhm my only problem was, NOT because it was in*est, but because I did not expect that the older brother would ... more>>
Spoiler

be the one to further pursue this kind of physical and s*xual relationship; even though Xu Zheng is indeed too reliant, attached and he loves his brother very much, what I expected was that Xu Zheng would be the one who'll initiate to further their relationship since he wouldn't know what he was doing, thus he won't be able to control himself. However, what actually happened is that Xu Ping was the one who furthered their relationship after that medical result...

Excuse me but his brother have an ASD, he wouldn't know better, also his perceptions were just limited to his little world (he doesn't even know death).... What I mean is, due to his ASD, his attachment with his brother would be hard to discern... Also, he experienced his first s*xual stimulation whilst his brother was washing his body, maybe he just attributed this rewarding stimuli and sensation to his elder brother...

But T.T aaaaa I feel conflicted honestly, I'm fine with the story, it's just weird because you know... one has an ASD, and the other furthered their normal reliance, attachment, and fondness to a physical and s*xual relationship even if he should know better (well I know that he experienced a lot controlling this kind of feeling, he was also aware of how it isn't considered "normal" yet he wasn't able to control himself anymore when he thought his life would be ending soon)... somehow, my mind's been dictating that Xu Ping took advantage of his brother's condition.

[collapse]

Well never mind, it wasn't harmful for them, Xu Ping had the kind of relationship he longed for with his brother. Also, Xu Zheng had this as an assurance to own his brother. No harm was made so it's fine, Xu Zheng doesn't have anyone but his brother anyways.

I could've rated this with 5 stars if their relationship were only the touching, soft and sweet kind that is normal for romantic relationships with some s*xual interaction

(since their relationship was just reliance + extreme attachment + caring (there's barely a touch of romance but that s*xual interaction between the two and when XZ gave XP a birthday gift)) <<less

Honestly when I first saw this novel, I assumed it to be those cliche 'yandere' brother and pushover brother trope and I turned out to be wrong. The relationship of the brothers is so well written, you will feel the pain faced by them yourself. Despite it being in*est the dynamic of the MC and the ML is really beautiful, and hats off to the author for writing such a beautiful story.
