3.5 🌟

Really chill read, no angst or anything.

I pushed through reading this because I was waiting for like the plot peak but it just ended.

I still feel like there’s a lot that’s supposed to happen because there were many plot points that were mentioned but everything just ended. I couldn’t believe it just ended like that.

This is a nice read if you’re looking for something chill, kinda predictable but it’s really somehow anticlimactic.

The summary makes the story to be more lighthearted and humorous than it ended up being. The translators put in a long explanation author’s note midway into the story which gave some context to what the author was trying to achieve. And the author was trying to do a lot but the execution wasn’t great. There were too many open plot lines as the author tried to explore too many themes. And the climax was nonexistent and ending was abrupt to the point it seemed that the author lost motivation... more>> and wanted to end the story. The extras were a bit more informative at least. Also it very much felt like a slice of life story most of the time.

I give this story 3 stars. Five stars for potential and minus 2 stars for not meeting expectations. <<less

I don't know what to say. The novel was just weird for the lack of better words. Some of them would be:

1. The story has long chapters full of unimportant things. Like I don't mind when the author writes about what the MC is thinking but the chapters consisted 90% of just the thoughts of the MC. And he kept thinking the same f*ckin things just in different ways. Important things were glossed over in one or two lines and the chapters basically consisted of the author telling us that... more>> the MC took one step, two step, three step.....

2. In these kind of novels you expect some you know farming, wine making and shop running stuff. But nope it took like four excruciatingly long chapters for the MC to collect all the materials for wine making (Basically the chapters had a few lines telling us that the MC told the carpenter to make smth complex that we don't know what is just that it's complex). And there were barely a few lines about how he made it. What confused me was that the MC sold the wine to his brother-in-law but then opened a shop and his brother started selling the wine. There was a few lines mentioning that the MC was opening a shop and I didn't realize until later on that it was a restaurant with hotpot like wtf. I might've missed the line but that isn't smth you write about only once. Basically really confusing. And it was all for nothing bcz right after opening the shops they went to the capital and they were never mentioned again. Never. Whether they still got money from it or that it was successful. It was like the author was telling us to assume that like other novels the wine the MC made had smth special about it and the business was famous. Even though the MC thought at the beginning that people could cheat their recipe. At first I thought he added spring water to it but nope he left so that ain't possible. They mentioned collecting fruits but wine and business like disappeared.

3. The plot is argh. The whole story is like the summary of a novel the author wrote. Bcz like I said before unimportant things make-up whole chapters but important things are mentioned in the passing. There are so many weird plots that the novel could do without.

Spoiler
    • The MC has transmigrated from a zombie apocalypse and has a jade space. Okay I can accept that.
    • The MC's brother is reborn. No reason given for that. Okay??
    • And apparently the MC isn't only transmigrated but he has also lived a whole life in this world and is reborn as well. What in the name of Merlin?
    • The ML has amnesia and is actually the general (which like everyone seems to realize after meeting him for no reason. They don't know who he is just that MC's father saved his life but bcz he acts a little elegant they think he is the general. There is no news about a missing general anything but they still think he is the general. Basically their thought process is really advanced and not normal at all. Even the MC's brother thinks he is the general/prince of the country. Like no normal village thinks that the person he safed is the general okay!!!).
    • Then suddenly boom MC's family is actually the famous Lin family which was famous. The family was charged for treason and killed just that no one knows the reason why not even the author. (Again the MC and his brothers realize this waaaay before. After realizing that apparently their family has books that their mother told them not to show anyone and their grandfather decided to become a farmer even though he was a merchant. Like wtf. Who thinks like that?? They connect the dots way too easily).
    • Then apparently ML's brother is in love with a system. which we get no backstory on. Like how did they even meet. And stuff. Not even in the extras.
    • Then BOOM! Apparently the system (who is called zero one and everyone just accepts that like it's normal. WTF) was sent by the soul (?) Of MC's father. And MC is actually the Saint of the interstellar humans bcz of some reason I don't know and you are just supposed to accept that. And then some things happen that don't make sense like MC's real big brother being the zombie emperor and his second brother becoming the zombie emperor as well. And they are the heroes but they aren't at the same time bcz I don't know (I read as carefully as I could and that's what I understood).
    • There is also another transmigrator woman whose origin, purpose and ending is never explained. Like she was one of the main three villains and how did they catch her? MC heard someone fighting and asked the ML. The ML told him it was no one important and all the main villains got caught that way.
    • Did you think it was the end?? how wrong of you!! Then in the last two chapters in like a few paragraphs it's mentioned that MC got a dragon in his space who wanted to give cultivation (?) to the ML. Like a literal dragon appeared and we didn't even get a proper explanation on why? How? What? You know those things.
    • Anyways somewhere in between you find out that the MC's brothers in this ancient world are his real brothers from the zombie world. So they transmigrated as well.
      [collapse]
4. The only thing you know about the MC is his trauma and that he knows how to make wine. Basically the ML babies him all the time while the MC does absolutely nothing. He worked to make wine like for 6 months after that basically he's just sleeping and traumatized. I'm serious. And the ML is just like his s*ave and human pillow. The only reason the MC even fell in love with the ML is because the ML makes him sleepy. Like that's important part of their love but still nothing else. And the reason why the ML fell in love is still not clear. Just like why he wasn't there in MC's previous life.

5. (Edited) Forgot about the villains. Bcz they were just so unimportant to the story. The transmigrater girl had even less appearances then the smallest canon fodder and she was the supposedly big villain. It was mentioned that she had a few golden fingers. But what they were? was never explained and she was less important then the cow the MC decided to buy. Like she literally killed his family in their previous life and no one f*ckin cares about her.

Basically this novel is nuts. Go read smth else. Better. <<less

The 3 stars are for the translators. This novel has a lot going on, so in turn some parts are unnecessary or confusing or just straight up boring.

At least the drama is not much. Tbh I expected more smut, was excited for it even. Only to get... Well... Idk what tf that was. Matchmaking at the right time I guess. Convenient falling for each other... Idk bro. I'll take it anyways, since meet cute scenes in such novels are so rare and it's usually r*pe or arranged marriages or forced... more>> ones.

Even though the novel is written from the MC's pov I still find it hard to understand and love him. <<less

I dropped it. I actually did not like this story much. It deserves about 3.5 ⭐acc. To me.

After reading the summary I thought this would be my cup of tea but nah, I didn't like it.

And this story really confused me alot, their transmigration and rebirth and all.

The ml, when did he fell in love with MC, I know the tag say love at first sight but don't know it just didn't fit here. And the MC I know he must be terrified of things happen to him but... more>> I didn't liked his character much, he was way too dependent on ml. And I like the MC to be independent.

Anyway it was not for me, way to puzzling and long chapter with not much progress.

And guys u can give it a try, don't give up on it just due to review, it's just my personal opinion. It might be ur type or u might end up liking it

Thanks translators for ur hardwork and author as well. <<less

I can understand why there’s so many 3 stars. Like, the story was good, but it wasn’t great. It’s kind weird that the chapters don’t flow into each other and sometimes a chapter ends abruptly with no closure. The same thing for how the villains are handled. Too much happened off screen, with a lot of unnecessary explanations on screen to gain satisfaction with how the story progressed.

Its really a "Retirement Life" because it's quite relaxing to read. The romance is sweet!

It just the tag caught me off guard. When I read revenge I thought it will be bloody to have the peaceful life MC wish for.

At the first part, Eldest brother was reborn and tell that MC died in the future. I thought that there will be an amazing fight in the future but the future was a mess. There's a system and another transmigrator.

Anyway, I still like the novel even though its like that. I... more>> just wish that the author fix this mess before he published.

Thanks for the translation. <<less

Welp, it was crazy.

If you think, this novel has like 5 themes at the same time (and mention them all would be an spoiler, I guess?)

But it was awesome. But hell, the plot is so messy I had to think for like 2 hours to get it more less right.

Recommended cus the fluff is awesome.

The main focus of the story is a young man's peaceful life in ancient times. Hence, the title "Retirement Life". It's not about an old man who retires and plays golf.

Lin Mo is the MC who ends up in ancient times after he dies in his previous life. Cheng Yan is the ML who is a lone villager who was rescued by Lin Mo's family a year before Lin Mo transmigrates.

There are some pretty intense moments when the story flashes to Lin Mo's past life which is in a post-apocalyptic... more>> world with zombies. However, most of the story is about Lin Mo's life in the countryside with his big, happy, and heartwarming family - it's super sweet. The awkward interactions between Lin Mo and Cheng Yan (both introverts) are super cute.

Later in the story, some rather fantastical elements are introduced which I thought pulled down the overall quality of the story. But overall, it's a super good read. ExR did a fantastic job translating - they have notes to explain cultural bits and to help clear up some of the more confusing parts of the story because the story *does* get a bit complicated at one point.

I would rate it 4.5 stars but rounding up to 5. <<less

This was a well translated novel but the story itself was a mishmash of every popular genre for online novels (transmitigation, rebirth, cultivation, apocalypse, ABO, futuristic, memory loss, historic), and not in a good way. I felt the author wanted to squash every type of novel into one, sometimes at the expense of logic or an engaging plot. For all the twists this novel has, there's very little sustained conflict and I found myself a bit disinterested since I knew conflicts would resolve themselves magically somehow.

Usually, the side stories would... more>> wrap a nice bow around the story and give it a sweet resolution, but I didn't get that impression from the side stories for this novel. It felt like the author was racing to tie up loose ends so this book could be finished. <<less

I didn't like this story. From the description it looked pretty interesting but it was boring. The MC is a ger in the ancient world which is pretty normal for MCs but, it feels like he has no awareness of what's going on. The ML is the typical person of high power rescued by the family and has lost his memories. Honestly, I don't think it could have been made more cliche if the author had tried.

It's a really ambitious story. The combinations of all these genres (zombie apocalypse, transmigration, rebirth, ger, ancient China, system, retirement) into one timeline can work if done well, but shoving all of them into 70 chapters is a bit questionable. My main issue isn't here.

Reading novels, we tend to follow a certain character - the MC; therefore, personally, a lot of how I feel about a novel comes from how much I can appreciate this character. So here's what I think for incoming readers:

If you like: character growth, "strong"/independent MC... more>> (physical, mental, psychological) - this novel is probably not for you.

Spoiler

This MC (psychologically, mentally) never grew from the young master he was before the zombie apocalypse; he goes from relying on his family before the apocalypse to relying on teammates during the beginning of the apocalypse, [period of weakness] to finally depending on his husband. He's the damsel-in-distress trope.

[collapse]

If you like: fluff, unconditional love, love in first sight situations - you should give this novel a try.

Spoiler

For those that are familiar with the set up, the MC is definitely one of those stealing energy from the world will. There's too much "luck" around this MC that's difficult to explain away.

[collapse]

Not saying he isn't pitiful, but some people may be pitiful due to their own hateful actions. <<less

This novel is atrocious. It is so far detached from reality that the history genre is a joke. There is 0 historical accuracy and the fantasy element is twisted as well. There are 3 genders (MC is the third) in this novel which ISN'T mentioned anywhere (genre, tags, description) so I added the Mpreg tag. There are many inconsistencies and plot holes too.

Spoiler

At the start the main character is this unfeeling though emotional wreck who lived in a zombie apocalypse while fleeing the scientist, not even 20 chapters in he overhears his brother talking (nothing hurtful) and he runs away crying -_-.
The MC and his family are supposed to be poor but they build 1 house in a village buy 2 shops in the nearby town (according to plot is a big town on the border of many countries) and also a house (I think). All of this happens in less than 6 months while the only income of the family is from farming -_-. Author never mentions any exact numbers, no comment on price of anything, no comment on income, only "they managed to buy it" or "it was selling well".

MC was from a rich family, then survived 4 years in the apocalypse, including being imprisoned and tortured for his spiritual spring space ability. He then transmigrates to ancient times as a super weak, feminine, ger.

The first half of the novel is a ger-in-a-farming-village slice of life story. It felt a bit too slow and glossed over (how the struggling family could suddenly open businesses, how his wine needs 2 months to ferment, but he could sell it after 2 days, etc), and the ML was always super duper weak.... more>> The missing details were especially noticeable because I had just finished reading "After Picking Up Five Brothers, No One Dares to Offend the Capital City", which puts a lot of thought into the rags-to-riches details and logic.

Then suddenly the story becomes a
Spoiler

aristrocracy/royal/Capital scheming for power novel because the amnesiac hunter husband is actually a Prince and the weak village ger instantly becomes a smooth historical schemer.

THEN, out of the blue, the Emperor's guard/love interest confesses that he is a system from the interstellar era built by the MC's original dad (from modern/apocalyptic times, who survived to the interstellar era), sent back in time to find him and his brothers (also sent back from their zombie apocalyptic times).

At that point, I stopped reading. Too confusing/jarring for me to continue.

If you read the description sounds like an amazing idea for a good novel, and, I don't say it wasn't good, but the autor try to mix a lot of different genders at the same time, meanwhile doesn't take the time for explain nothing.

It was too much and make you feel bored.

I only have one thing for say: don't waste your time with this novel.

There comes a time when I need to stop myself from forcing myself to keep reading a novel, otherwise I'll start hating it. The point has come for me. No amount of careful reading and re-reading, no amount of "just one more chapter, come on, maybe this will be the one" will make me like an author's writing style if it doesn't agree with me. So here I am, giving up on this one.

Judging by the translator's note reprimanding the readers for calling this novel confusing, it seems like this... more>> is not fault of the translator but of the author themselves. So, sorry to go against the translator's admonishment but the author needs to sit down, jot down a story outline, pick a few relevant scenes out of this outline, and write these few scenes PROPERLY. And then publish it for money. That will be a beautiful story. This? This: jumping from here to there, then rushing whole days in three lines, mentioning a place or a character without explanation then bringing them back 10, 20, 30 chapters later, this is a mess. I can't do this anymore. I sense that beneath the chaos there's a really good story, it just needs to be written with proper cohesion and pace in mind. <<less

Hmmm, not sure if this is because this is edited mtl or what but I feel like the writing is missing lots of clarifying information. When describing something, it takes the most direct and shortest explanation that I feel is not rooted in the world at all. First, there is zero introduction to the body's family. The MC has no confusion or issues integrating with the lifestyle of a bunch of strangers. There is no observation on what the feelings of the family towards the MC's stolen body are. Do... more>> they like him? Do they hate him for being weak and a burden to the family? I can't tell how they feel. And from the MC's side, he didn't bother to dig through the body's memories to learn about the world?... Then, when he does all the new things, the explanations of the world feel so little, I can't really imagine it. I'm rather disappointed because the title seems to be exactly what I was looking for.

What the heck is going on? The author really went all out and not in a good way. The translation was decent but the storyline, characters, and the relationships were meh. Some of the stuff added on made no sense or really had little to no affect to the story. Like dang stick to one or two tropes, there is no need to have a trope bingo in one story. I wouldn't recommend this, maybe as a really light read? If you dont mind the absurdity of random things added... more>> then yeah go for it.

Tropes features in this novel

zombie apocalypse

a golden finger, space with a spring of magical water

the MC is foodie, so he helps the family through food

When I was reading the first couple of chapters, I actually thought of dropping this 'cuz I dont really understand whats going on and what's up and it is hurting my head so much.. But when I got to chapter 20 or something it got good cuz the relationship between the MC nad ML is so cute, and I kinda like the fact that it has a bit of cultivation, transmigration, rebirth and interstellar system bcuz at some point it kinda made sense lol, the only thing that I dont... more>> like is that the chapters are only 74 and the extras are dissapointing it was so short and not complete.. But good story tho..
