Translator speaking!

EDIT: Chapters are posted on the Betwixted Butterfly Translations website. They are currently password locked, but password is available for free on our Discord server.

Review time!

... more>> I absolutely loved this story-- the ridiculous gong MC, the delicious misunderstandings, even the narcissistic ML in the beginning. It was a ton of fun to translate and had me in tears from laughing so hard on multiple occasions.

However, I must agree with everyone about the ending. Chapter 82 hits you like a bus and it just never really bounces back. It's obvious the author didn't know what to do with the characters anymore and gave up, which was really disappointing to discover, because I read it as I translated and never got more than 10 chapters ahead at any point. Still, we worked hard and made the ending as bearable as we could!

That being said, I appreciate the compliments about how well we did with translating it, but it was my first translation project and you should anticipate some mistakes and imperfections. But we gave every chapter our very best, with each chapter typically going through four sets of eyes prior to posting.

All in all, just be warned about the ending not being great. If you want a wild ride and you want to cry laughing over it, EVSS is your novel! <<less

this was pretty good. Some of the misunderstandings reminded me of The Demon King Always Thinks I Love Him and Don't You Like Me? Though in this series the MC is the gong (i think. It was censored), which seems to be unusual with Chinese BL. At first I thought the ML was a narcissistic flibbertigibbet but once he "lost his memory" he becomes better. Those long mirror gazing sessions in the beginning were annoying. The mysteries were a nice add to keep it from become boring and mostly worked... more>> as intended. The one thing I don't understand is
Spoiler

why he kept changing his face. He does the ML, pretends to leave and become someone else and I can't figure out why. Maybe it's just a habit of being sneaky and cautious, I dunno

the ending was a HE with everything solved. That being said, this story kind of meandered a little from time to time. <<less

If y'all can endure a MC that only knows how to lie and lie and never ever tells the truth, you're welcome to read this.

I will admit that it's nice but the lying got too much for me. I mean, come on, even after practically forcing himself on An Yuan he still lied and changed his appearance but still did not leave his side. I stopped there cause I was too annoyed. Just frigging tell the truth for once, ML still didn't know his real name. ANNOYING.

If you're looking for exciting plots, this isn't what you should be reading.... Sure it's funny when MC uses multiple masks in front of ML but not much happens aside from MC trying to clear the name of his 'Sect' and ML not really bearing a grudge of hatred but a grudge of being left alone... Like a wife left alone.. XD

I MTLed this since there's just 1 translated chapter at the time of this review btw

Spoiler

Because MC kept accidentally getting MLs golden finger, he ended up doing ML and he left and came back with a new mask... BTW nothing steamy happens here.. so if you're looking for that, there's none of that here..

So far entertaining. Was recommended this series after I enjoyed The Demon King Always Thinks I Love Him and I can see a lot of similarities and comedic takes that I enjoyed.

That said, the translation is edited MTL. There are quite a few mistranslations and inaccuracies, so just something to keep in mind.

It is a very comedic novel, but the romance is lacking and the misunderstanding lasts very long. It is like Midsummer's Night Dreams kind of misunderstanding. It was very fun at first but the last 30 chapters dropped this to a 2.5. The author rushes the novel, and everything felt like a big joke not well done. Tbh, if you don't have anything to read, try this, if not, don't waste your time.

The translation is very, very good.

This is like a reeeeaaaallyyy funny story. You will laugh lots but there are also fight scenes and later I even cried. There are a lot of funny misunderstandings. At some point you just want it to stop, but you're still laughing. XD

Just the ending is badly written. It's very rushed and I would not have minded 100 more chapters, especially because the story always had a touch of mystery.

AND VERY IMPORTANT:

You won't be able to see gongs the same way after this story. XD Every time some guy... more>> will just like and support the shou out of a ridiculous reason, you will just wonder, if he's being forced and actually curses the shou secretly, like our MC here.😂 <<less

It was interesting in the beginning because it’s also rare to have a gong as the MC and the story was funny but the misunderstanding just kept piling up then it was like the author didn’t want to deal with those things anymore and abruptly ended the story. The ending was so infuriating because it was like everything the MC was doing since the beginning was all for nothing, ha ha ha. I felt so disappointed. If you want to read just read before you get to c80. It just... more>> gets worse after that. <<less

Pretty great! MC is hilarious, and it's funny watching as everything goes wrong around him even though he's trying his best and he just wants to laze around and be beautiful. ML is also pretty funny; him in the beginning is a little annoying (but still interesting cause his personality is so.. Lmao) but then he gets better and it's a total 180.

Also, I love it when the protagonist is the seme hehe. I'm so excited to read more.

Thanks to the translator for all their work!

EVSS became one of my favorite danmeis out there. I couldn't explain how I felt when I first read this. I just know that my heart was full because of the love HCS had from his Tianning family. I love each one of them. The hall masters, the left and right dharma protectors. THEY ALL SPOILED OUR HCS!!! If you want to read danmei with a full blast comedy, cultivation, and solving mysteries, then this might be good for you. However, this is a slowburn (as usual) but it was... more>> worth it nonetheless. Damn worth it.

My faorite characters would be, ofc, the hall masters, elder lan fang, an yuan, lu baibi, lu qingqian and the MC himself. I think I'm unable to choose only one COZ TRUST ME! THEY WILL ALL MAKE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH THEM. They are just so adorable, I felt like I was part of the family. Tianning was indeed their home. My home. With them. Until then. I wish to see you again, probably in the next few years or months. Idk. Until next time, my tianning. <<less

Hm, where do I start... The novel... You can't really take it seriously. Not gonna lie, it leaves readers with a big huh halfway through and becomes something kinda s*upid, like a troll would write, not to say the author is bad or anything. I just find myself thinking, is the MC the troll or the author? Minor spoilers if you don't mind: ... more>>
Spoiler

Imagine yourself going on an exciting journey, but sike, the NPCs you all meet are actually the same person.

[collapse]
The way MC handles things is exactly like how a 10 year old would handle problems, and this painfully shows in the later part of the novel. But okay, negative things aside. I loved this more than I expected. The different arcs are well connected, doesn't seem very choppy and all the side characters are very well developed and likeable (not the villains/cannon fodders of course). Though! I feel like EVERYONE should see this PSA: This is not a full on romance fluffy novel! This should be have the tag Roamntic Undertones or Romance subplot. I'm sure the author wanted to build their chemistry and drag on before they get together, but dang, in the whole 110 chapters, I can count with one hand if I add all the romance scenes together. This novel heavily focuses on MC's childish plots to help ML in his goals, but fails epically.

Ok, but most importantly, what everyone is talking about... the ending. Well, it's not that bad. I thought it'd be horrendous, but I actually found it ok. Sure, I was rolling my eyes at the drop in quality, but to be honest, as I reach chapter mid 80s I wanted it to end... Pros though:
Spoiler

there is a shorr Bad End and Happy End which is the real and main ending of this novel. Idk why the author decided to add in the Bad end, because it's horribly placed... it made more sense than the happy ending though, lol. I cried to that, only to get siked the next chapter by the real happy ending, which was... Idk how I felt about getting cheated out of my tears. However, as s*upid as the happy end was, it gave the side characters and the MC's close relationship with them to shine, and it gave me warm fuzzy feelings, so... I guess that offsets it?

[collapse]

all in all, I think it's a good one if you don't have any other comedy historical novel to read. It really isn't that bad, and worthwhile to stick to the end :) <<less

It's really entertaining.

The novel is really humorous, and make me laugh the whole time. The conflict is not that complicated, in fact at a glance you can see who and who is the villain.

I really like the MC, he is the seme here. I really like their interaction.

... more>> The ending is quite rushed. I think the only drawback from this novel is the rushed ending and the lack of extra chapter? Honestly I really want some extra chapters to give more explanation on the other plot.

But, it's still good enough and enjoyable, even though the plot is not mindblowing, and the ending is not satisfying, it's still good to enjoy and read it in the spare time. <<less

You can expect misunderstandings beget by lies, insanity, pettiness and moral ambiguity rolled into one character who is the MC, Han ChangSheng, himself. His character is so well-made and similarly, the ML's character is very interesting too, as well as the other supporting ones. No one is flat except for some real minor mob characters that doesn't even get a name. For those who have names, well, they're all eccentric. Some characters appears in the earlier chapters and become key characters later on.

The relationship between characters are excellent, and despite... more>> the overall comedic overtone, there's actually a plot that has been foreshadowed even in the earliest chapters. Every chapter has its own worth and not just a useless filler which is why I managed to mtl this to the very end. It doesn't drag and it's not 300+ chapters worth, which could get bland overtime due to repetition of some overused plots. The plot is so dynamic and it feels like you have to run just to catch up to it. It's unique and even though the pace is a bit fast, it's steady.

MC is OP but he's not absolute. Everybody is dragged around in his orbit and his charismatic gravity, and he ruins, saves, plunders, protects, destroys, liberates-- he just does what he wants with reasonings that are either too shallow or too deep. He's hypocritical, flawed and he embraces those negatives aspects like a winner. He's not beyond using tricks just to win and he's extremely sassy. I honestly feel sorry for the ML, since he was influenced by the MC's... bad traits.

This has been amazing, and I would happily read this over and over again to relish the experience! <<less

Absolute gold! I love hidden identities and slow burn romance.

Great translation and editing!

I have a feeling that the ending might be sad.

A unique twist on the Second Chance genre, Han Chansheng must ensure that the life of his destined enemy goes smoothly after his regression to the past. The man he killed on a whim turns out to be an immortal descending to the mortal realm to experience his calamity. An Yuan’s fate was already calculated, but he was inexplicably killed before it could even begin.

The story is primarily a comedy rather than a martial arts romance. Han Changsheng (HC) is a professional... at disguise and pulling pranks. He very quickly... more>> manages to seriously and inexplicably mess things up again after barely a scene has passed with An Yuan (AY) nowhere in sight. He poses a question around this time. Why is he able to influence an immortal’s calamity like this (Paraphrasing) ? HC may be playful, but there is something more going on here than what the dieties were willing to reveal.

The story takes a more serious tone later on. Self-sacrifice honestly doesn’t look good on HC even if he tries his best. He does everything in his power to mitigate the consequences of his upcoming death. It’s rather somber to see his mentality change due to knowing his destined end at the hands of someone he has come to care for: a mix of meticulous planning, despair, deception, self-deception, and (in a very HC way) an odd touch of optimism.

What felt most off to me after the much disparaged chapter
Spoiler

[collapse]
is a slight change in the author’s writing style. They decided to mix two false scenes into the overall plot. The dream sequence I get. The differences between HC’s expectations and the actual events that follow showed how difficult it was for him to actually follow through on his tragic plan, no matter how much he prepared or how much desperate effort he put in. It made his hesitation and confusion in the next scene understandable without undermining his determination. This is a good moment even if it wasn’t well received by the readers. The real issue for me is another scene where the author purposefully obscured important dialogue to confuse the readers before a later reveal scene, which rehashes the exact same sequence without the author’s interference. I get why the author wanted us to be as deceived as the MC, but it just didn’t fit the overall story and made it seem like the author wasn’t sure how to end the story.

The two ‘extras’ make a rather solid recovery of what would otherwise be a rushed ending.

Tl;dr Not the story of the year by any means, but has a good start and some redeeming features that make it worth a read if you like the genre. <<less
