What happens when one eats Death?

Personally, I don’t really know. What I do know is merely one thing.

I’m hungry.

Therefore, I’ll take the heads of these guys and deliver them to my superiors.

Surely, I’ll be able to eat delicious food.

Come, if preparations are in order, we depart.

You don't need a complicated powerup system or some serious story for a story to be successful.

This story is as simple as swinging a huge scythe to kill people while trying to think which food to eat and which one tastes good for the MC. Though it doesn't mean that this novel is all about food and killing, there's a war going on in the background but is shown as the main plot line while the MC just does her job...

So.... I don't even know why I like... more>> this novel since it's so simple but still can't stop reading it.

The main thing is the chapters to the end of the story... So short that we might be able to finish reading it withing few months going according to the translators speed. Thanks translator. <<less

Read it until the end, loved it, only problem was that it got a little confusing for me almost at the end. I couldn't tell whether MC was dead or was alive or wtf was happening...

It reminded me of "The girl who bore the Flame Ring" and "Youjo Senki", all have strong female MCs who lead an army and are technically on the side of the 'bad guys', "flame ring" has the same author as this book, not sure about "Youjo Senki" which has a more moder setting. Check them... more>> out later if you want to read novels similar to this one.

Overall, a very fun read. <<less

Short and sweet with a great aftertaste. The beginning has good world building and character establishment of how strong the main character is. It's a grey-grey morality world where everyone has flaws (although some people's behavior seems exaggerated for comedic effect) and pursues self interest in some sense. The mid-late part is pretty depressing, maybe speaking to the bleakness of war. The ending is very satisfying, including the side stories, and I highly recommend you read the full chapter 34 (the link here is to a half complete one).

This book is about a girl might as well be the incarnation of gluttony. She is constantly hungry for people and carnage. The thing is, she's able to look extremely cute while being in the midst of war. It's a complicated story where you have to think about the plot but at the same time there's enough fluff mixed in that you don't mind.

Edit: this translation isn't complete. The translator decided to finish it how they please. I HATE when translators do that. THE STORY ISN'T YOURS! STOP!

*sigh*

Anyway, do MTL and read the full chapter 34. One of our favourite character doesn't die. And two bad guys are killed by MC before they can fully enjoy the new kingdom. They original ending is better.

... more>> --------------------------------------------

This was the type of book I had been looking for, for years

Our MC was strong and special but the world didn't revolve around her. There wasn't any forced romance and it felt quite realistic. It showed how wars really are. How the bad side isn't all bad and the good side isn't all good. No one is saved from death because no one has a certain halo of being an important villain or being from our MC's side. Which kinda hurt because we lost many characters I had come to love. But that's what made the story more realistic. There were no s*upid villains fighting without a cause or just because they felt like it. Everyone had their own reasons, their own stories for becoming how they had become. And I really loved that!❤ <<less

Before I go any further, I urge everyone to read the prologue.

While the events of the story to follow will nothing like it, you'll get to experience a taste of the author's writing and the overall feel of the series. I was hooked from the start.

This is nothing like the lighthearted and fun adventure stories I usually read.

At it's heart, this is a war story. It follows the lives of soldiers and documents their battles. It also follows the evil and/or selfish schemes of those in leadership who only... more>> care for their own political ambitions. This is not something you read to feel good. There is no happiness to be had here; only death and destruction, bloodshed and betrayal.

This is the type of story I'd normally never read, but it was decently entertaining and seriously addictive. I just couldn't stop reading. It consumed all my free time until I got to the end.

The story is very well written. The translations (of the main story, at least) are decent leave nothing to be desired. With the exception of the extras (craptacular hobbyist translations), it makes for a good read in English.

There are only 34 chapters (+3 after-story extra chapters), but they're fairly long - each taking around 30min to read. Overall, that made it short enough to be worth investing the time to read something out of my comfort zone, while also being long enough to offer plenty of substance.

I can only consider this novel as worthy of a 10/10 when I can't stop reading despite being something that I normally wouldn't enjoy.

Now for the story itself: We mainly follow the titular character - The Girl Who Ate a Death God.

Spoiler

In the prologue, we learn about Schera's miserable life before eating a death god and the events that lead to her eating the death god.

Thereafter, the "you are what you eat" concept taker root as she displays unmatched prowess at slaughtering her enemies with the scythe belonging to her one-time meal.

We come to learn that food is her ultimate motivation:

  • Starved and on the verge of death, desiring nothing more than food, the death god that came to reap her soul ended up becoming her meal.
  • She thought he looked delicious and, afterwards, still considers the death god to be the most delicious thing she's ever eaten.
  • She joined the military because she wanted to be able to eat until full - something she never had the a chance to experience in her entire life before.
  • Her other motivation - her hatred for the rebels - was because one of their men stole her last meal just before she was about to meet her end - it was the only decent food she had ever managed to get her hands on. She wall absolutely never forgive anyone who takes away her food.
  • She raids enemy supplies for surplus dinner.
  • She's always snacking - even at inappropriate times.
  • She cares for people who give her food or eat with her and scorns those who would interrupt a meal.
  • She cares more for the celebratory meal than her promotion - unlike all the others in the military.

All that aside, she's the most capable fighter in the series and her unit is the most competent at disproportionately spilling enemy blood. It's ironically appropriate that she will come to be feared as a death god and labelled as such as a result of her achievements.

[collapse]

It also gives us snippets of an inside view into other characters from all factions. It's frustrating at times to see leaders make incompetent decisions while thinking about their reputation or promotion instead of the most efficient way to use their men. Some will betray for the sake of their own survival. Some will betray for the sake of their political standing. Some will commit evil acts are committed for the greater good. Honorable people will die - let down by their selfish and incompetent allies. The people who act the most righteous are the most evil inside.

It's that kind of story.

Schera fights an uphill battle for the losing team. She's the only one raking up achievements when the odds are against her. She will absolutely spill the blood of her enemies and return alive to do it again.

When it appears she'll finally meet her end at the end of the story...
Spoiler

For Schera, it's finally another opportunity to eat another delicious death god.

Well this was a good novel. it was the quite a ride.

Characters are developed in a pleasing direction. its story is smooth and flowing. easy to read that you will binge on it. it doesn't leave an after taste, which is good compared to other novels because it leave you satisfied. it is logical that just traps you in agreeing to what is told in the story...i could not have a better story than what the author had written.

WHEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVE!

But joking aside, This is honestly a great story about a fearless Calvary lead by death herself. I'd say there aren't many flaws besides two big ones.

One being the character Diener and how the story tries making him out to be this brilliant mastermind. But the things that Diener does isn't clever or amazing. It's stuff that I feel anyone with basic understanding of military can think of and in reality, most of Diener's plots wouldn't get that far. The story does try doing this kind... more>> of interesting story about a man at first on the path of justice, As he starts making more and more extreme "Sacrifices" in the name of victory. But it's not done well, It's weird cause most things in this story are done well. But it's not gradual enough and Diener just isn't likable enough to be invested in his story. The part with him having this network of spies is also kind of eh. The story acts like it's as easy as cutting butter but doesn't really seem to know what spies do. A better tactician and planner would be Sidoma and it's a shame that the story never did much with him.

The second biggest issue would be how incompetent the Kingdom can be. It get's to a point where it becomes overly comedic. Not only is the Kingdom the one with more power and supplies, But they're also the ones with the better-trained Generals and soldiers. So constantly losing 30, 000 here and there is kind of laughably dumb. Near the end it get's really annoying with Ox towing land mines somehow being able to route an army of 150, 000 in the span of a day. An army of 150, 000 would be pretty spread out (Even 10, 000 would be spread out) So it's not like they'd even be able to just send them into a hoard of men and they should be more than able to take out any Ox before reaching them.

I've read many stories where armies clash against each other. They all suck, But not this story. This story seems to understand battles a ton more then any other story I've read and it's honestly refreshing.

Schera our MC. She's a lovable buffoon with the biggest thing on her mind being food. I do kind of wish we got a more developed personality. Would be interesting if she, for the most part, Was still like an 18-Year-Old village girl, But considerably OP. I'd love to be able to see more of her perspective that you wouldn't be able to do with the actual MC's personality. As her hate slowly grows for the Liberation Army. Would be interesting to see. Hell, I think it'd be fun if MC's family was still alive. Would be interesting to see the MC's reaction to them being alive and how her family thinks of their dead weight daughter leading the most prestigious Calvary unit in the world. If the story wanted then have it be so the village was never attacked and the MC ran away to join the army maybe as proof as she's good for something. Either way, The current Schera is adorable and I love her as she is.

Spoiler

I do like the relationship the story is able to portray between Schera and her Calvary unit. It honestly can get a bit emotional when a Calvary member dies. Seeing Schera's Horse die was honestly one of the saddest moments of the story and it's really great.

I love the relationship between Schera and her advisor Katarina. They'd honestly make an adorable couple and there are even some hints as to that happening. I just find the image of Katarina forcing Schera into a bath while Schera is trying to run away with food in her mouth.

I do find it a bit of a disappointment how Katarina died. The story just gave it a passing mention really. I think at the end with the MC being taken away by one of her fellow Calvary members, I think that scene would've been all the more emotional if it was Katarina instead fighting to the death for Schera.

[collapse]

I am a bit disappointed at how we don't have Schera with an ultimate form. Near the end when her body is weak and frail from what I'm presuming was Poison Arrows. I was hoping that her body would die but she'd be reborn (Same mindset and everything just a new body) With a more mature body and covered in a Cloak with a Scythe (Also a shaded out face as long as she has the cloak on) She'd truly become a Grim Reaper.

Might be why I love this story so much. I've always been a fan of depictions of the Grim Reaper but as a Female.

Overall this story is pretty awesome. The finale two chapter 36 & 37 were kind of a drop in quality and it even took me awhile to be able to understand what's happening. But the rest of the story can be really fun. <<less

One of the few light novels I genuinely enjoyed and couldn't put down. Any other story by this author I also highly recommend.

The author knows how to write a good story, the protagonist, while over powered, is set in a realistic manner. She has amazing abilities and strength and doesn't lose confrontations, but she's not over the top or done in a way where she can easily win, all her victories do feel genuine.

I do have a few problems with the story though. First is just that reading other stories... more>> by this author, the main character is very very similar to the others. There's a few minor differences as well as the cause of their strength, but their personalities as well as how they interact with other people are almost identical.

There's also more than a few plot holes and unanswered questions, many things seem to be thrown in simply because its cool, but it doesn't really have much explanation. Even the simple question of why Schera can eat a death god in the first place is just ignored. Then everyone who loses a battle is made sure to look evil before they lose. If they die then they are ignored and treated as shit, if they live then they made a complete 180 and turn into a saint and a complete bro. If it happened once or twice it would be one thing, but for some reason even though its portrayed as both sides fighting for a cause, the one who's going to lose is always shown to be a close minded bigot who ignores commoners and only cares about rank. Then they lose and suddenly they're everyone's best friend and everyone always loved working for them and commoners love them too. Just gets kind of dumb when this happens 5 times in a story.

In the end however, its still an amazing story and these flaws are minor in comparison to other light novels. The translation team was on the ball too so no complaints to the original team. Definitely read this if you haven't. <<less

I enjoy a lot this novel. I always enjoy good characters. I can enjoy a story with good characters but bad writed and bad world design and drop one with bad characters but good write and good world design.

This is not a bad writed and bad world design and the MC don't grow either but her simple and unusual charisma make they world around her better. To make the hard bread more softy and tasty. This is what she is. This is the life of Schera. Maybe the end lack... more>> of vibe of last dinner, but still a very tasty and beautiful novel.

Seems like there are a secret chapter but I'm not a detective and I kind of busy to search it. <<less

This honestly has to be one of the best pieces of literature I have ever read. It is now among the 3 or so other stories that have genuinely made me shed some tears.

I wouldn't say it's a happy story, but the characters, even those that show up only for a paragraph or two stand out. It's a war story with a strong feeling of soul and substance to it. Really something tasty.

The story tells about war between humans. Between a treacherous and corrupt kingdom and the (supposed to be) just rebellion. It's a story about a girl who fought and rise in military for food, revenge, and food. The story is good solid and unique.
Spoiler

The MC fights in an obvious losing war. Her ally officers mostly idiots hungry for glory and promotions.

[collapse]
The main character is likable; honest, strong, cute, and have no mercy for her enemies. The camaraderie between her and her troops is heartwarming. I really recommend this story if you like badass op female MC or war story with political element in it.

I went into this without knowing the full impact of knowing what was going on. It was just going to be another LN that I would shelf in my brain with all the others, but it really and truly surprised me with it's dark plot. The MC is somewhat carefree and yet she's insane. She's at that level of insane at where she knows she's insane, yet she also behaves innocent, like a child kinda. The beginning of the story actually isn't so bad when I compare it to the... more>> ending elements. I didn't realize how truly dark this was until I got to the ending parts.

Spoiler

The beginning is slightly dark because her abusive and negligent family is slaughtered by the enemy kingdom and she almost gets r*ped by one of the soldiers. Or she really was being r*ped, we really don't know from her point of view, but I don't think she was. Just as the soldier was starting to r*pe her, she saw "Death", robe and scythe in hand. She eats the dude then, or in her perspective, she eats death, therefore becoming death and gaining monstrous physical strength.

She joins the army and is completely underestimated, but that changes when she absolutely slaughters everyone with her scythes. She quickly ascends the ranks with the bloody gore of her enemies in her wake. When she later gets her own army, they trust and respect her, to the point of worshiping her as the "Death God." This is where it gets even more dark than her being a little girl happily harvesting the heads of the enemy. Her army worships her as a literal god, to the point where they don't mind death because they don't believe they will truly die while they are fighting with the "Death God." It gets to the point where they take on the aspects of even being brainwashed at one point, making this extremely disturbing.

She eventually gets killed by a traitor in the rebel army that orginally was her Second Lieutenant. She vows revenge and then dies, but not before eating him. She is thought to have died, but Death once again gave her another chance, so she slowly waits for the day to take revenge on the other betrayers.

In the end, the rebel army wins, but it was no better than the previous kingdom. It's still corrupted to the core and it still has suffering commoners. This just makes it all the darker, because the ruling queen wanted a world where there was no starvation or suffering for the people, but in the end, she got her just deserts and then died due to stress overclocking her body beyond the limits. A new rebel army appeared and the cycle was starting to repeat. In the darkness of this all, the "Death God" had formed a new army with the rebel army, getting her revenge and reaping souls.

[collapse]

This is a great story if your looking for something to bring you to a dark, dark part of your mind while including military strategies and betrayals, read this. If you don't like the dark stuff, go and read some harem story where the dense guy has like 20 different bishoujos humping him. <<less

This is a great novel, probably one of the best Web Novels I've come across. Certainly not for everybody, it's serious, dark, tragic, and extremely harsh. It's mostly realistic, with just a little bit of fantasy. If you're up for a roller coaster ride of feelz, and don't have anything important planned for the next day or two, I highly recommend giving this one a try.

Also props to Qianweijia of DistractedTranslations for an excellent translation.

A happy story about a girl who enjoys eating in the military. Heartwarming. Well written, enjoyable characters. I liked it a lot, and I'm not usually a big fan of military/politic stories. The translations were also good. Big props to DistractedTranslations for bringing this story to those of us who can't read Japanese. Thank you.

Great story, a little offbeat. Schera's motivations make her stand out as a protagonist, as does the fact that we pretty much know the Kingdom (country she is a soldier for) will eventually lose from the get-go. It makes things more interesting, rather than assuming that they'll eventually triumph, I look forward to seeing how things turn out for Schera.

I'm reminded slightly of The Girl Who Bore the Flame Ring (I've only read 2 chapters of that so far though).

A really good short novel, although not as short as you'd expect for 34 chapters. Each is around 2-3x normal. It starts out with a village being destroyed, and a girl that's about to be r*ped and killed sees a shinigami in the rapist and eats him. That's already a great start, and then it continues being great as it progresses. It's mostly dark and centered around a war where many characters die, but there are also bright parts (mostly involving food). Honestly, the only part I really dislike is... more>> that the author spoils some stuff in those annoying future historian things. That would usually be at least one star off / dropping it, but luckily it's only a couple times and the rest is so good that I'll leave it as five for now.

The linked translation c34 is apparently just half the chapter, tbh I kinda prefer it ending there and I don't know whether the other half is canon. I like it either way though, so be aware that exists. <<less

AT A GLANCE GRADE: 10/10, short and sweet.

A story doesn't need to be long to be enjoyable. It doesn't need to have a happy ending. It most of all doesn't need to have a "good guy".
This story proves this in droves, I found myself immersed in the story and I really enjoyed how you portrayed war as it really is. There are no "good guys", there are no "bad guys", just people trying to survive, and those that have gone mad. It portrays war as it is, a horrid nasty thing that brings out the worst in people.

The only thing I didn't enjoy was the complete non explanation of her abilities, but it is far painted over by everything else in the story. I do enjoy how the author didn't pad the story out or overextend the story or anything like that, so we don't end up with repetitive fight #804. All parts of the story were unique and I never felt bored at any point.

Something I will commend you on, and I'm not saying this lightly or giving them praise for nothing here, is managing to include the topic of a very early (and cut off) attempted r*pe on the main character, and they manage to not completely fumble it! Most stories that include something like that (Kumo Desu sadly comes to mind) treat it as a joke or otherwise do not treat it as it should be.

Sadly Japanese media in general doesn't handle the topic of r*pe, or the limit of what should and shouldn't be sexualized very well in my opinion so I say sincerely, congratulations to you.

This was a review made by a Verbose Idiot, and I wish you all happy reading.

Unlike other web novels that are often written for the express purpose of entertainment, The Girl Who Ate a Death God isn't exactly a pleasant read. No one ends up having a happy ending. It's a serious novel that highlights the hypocrisy within human nature while implicitly asking some interesting open-ended questions to get the reader thinking.
