A high school student that has lived as a mob-character ―― Mimori Touka

During the school trip Touka and his classmates are summoned to another world by Goddess Vysis.

According to the goddess who summoned them, summoning so many heroes with high ranks such as S-ranks and A-ranks is very unusual. The growth rate of E-Rank heroes is lower when compared to growth rate of A-Ranked and S-Ranked heroes

However, Touka was the only person with the lowest rank ―― he was an E-rank hero.

His status is overwhelmingly low in comparison to his classmates. Moreover, Touka’s peculiar skill is supposed to be an absolute failure 【Abnormal State Skill】and therefore he was abandoned and thrown away into disposal ruins…

Thus the former mob-character and abandoned hero, will absolutely become the strongest as he advances and strike back.

It's a shame, the setting is pretty good and interesting with a few unique idea but it's so badly exploited.

Like someone said, it's a pretty decent revenge isekai but why the totally black and white morality ?

Every single girl the MC saves is a pure hearted girl with a dark past, every single men he fight is an utterly despicable evil monster, every single decent man exists only to get used and destroyed by the evil Goddess.

The MC pretend to be a bad boy dark and edgy but no one... more>> buy that, not even the other characters who call him out as a big softy...

Spoiler

I found it rather good up to the death of the world's strongest with the MC going against the "rules" of this kind of stories by killing him instantly instead of having a revenge fight at the climax of the story but after that it's more conventional and goes downhill.

[collapse]

If you try to write a mature story why not graduate out of kindergarten morality ?

As the story goes, I'm 99% sure that the Goddess is the one behind the revival of the Demon King and she use him to gather miasma to extend her life. It would be so cliché.

You have a lone Goddess that is the only one keeping humanity together to fight back against the Demon King, she fought him for centuries, protecting humanity as a whole even if she sometimes had to take harsh decision and sacrifice people for the sake of victory, on top of that she has to deal with often selfish and cowardly heroes from another world and coral them, flatter them and coax them towards rescuing her world or it would be destroyed.

She could be an heroic figure with plenty of valorous and righteous devotees with a MC who acts like a prick at the beginnings, get exiled and decide to take revenge against the Goddess even if it means the victory of the Demon King and the destruction of the world.

As the MC discover the world, bonds with the locals and learn more about the burden of the Goddess, he could start to waver, reconsider his revenge or not and avenge himself even if it's ruins the world.

That would make the whole story a lot more interesting but no, the MC can only be a good guy, right ?

So the Goddess and her followers have to be utterly despicable, corrumpt and evil to a ridiculous point, this way the MC can kill them without any doubt about his own morality, he truly is in the right.

The lastest plot with the Arachne in the Faraway City is incredibly dumb.

Once again, the author create a good setting : a closed city on the verge of collapse, a bunch of warriors wanting revenge against humanity, a bunch of civilians fearfull but aware that the situation is dire and something had to be done or the city will face destruction, you can take that and make an interesting story but no, not in this novel !

Spoiler

Instead you have a leader who is supposedly incredibly clever take incredibly dumb decisions because it is too confident in himself and the MC who save the day because he is so clever and school the leader who recognise his faults and that the MC is better than him.

[collapse]

Some said it was a paradoy or a caricature of a revenge isekai, it may be the case, that would explain why the author can create a good setting and completely ruin it with a dumb plot.

But I would judge that as chuuni syndrome from the writer who want to write a dark and edgy story but is unable to write a true evil MC and is settling some grudges through his story's characters.

It's a shame that this setting won't ever reach its full potential. <<less

this is really interesting, the idea of Abnormal State Skill being this OP is interesting. The MC is getting OP real fast which is something I like, and he is driven by revenge as you can see from the description, I like how his personality is changing, not that much as of chapter 21 but you can still see the changes. But as the other reviews have said there is way too many unnecessary explanation and telling us stuff that could have been said in 2-3 sentences. Anyway the pacing... more>> is really slow, know that when reading this. But that doesn't mean its not good, no I really liked it. And I wanna see what happens next I wanna see how he gets out of the dungeon and how he gets his revenge too. Anyway I recommend you give this a look and decide yourself, the translation is good too. <<less

Wow what a huge waste of time the author is just trying so hard to make this as long as possible by adding pointless dialogue and describing things in st*pidly long paragraph when he can just use a simple words and the most annoying here is the forced POV of the girl classmate come on author we only want the POV of the MC and friends who cared about what happen to the dumb classmate you can basically summarized the POV of classmate with this : Showing the girl is... more>> weak, Goddess and other classmates being an @ss classmate acting edgy that's basically it no need to repeat it for about 50+ chapters ffs and if you came here for revenge you will be disappointed im at 178 chapter and no revenge happened here its just s*upid it make sense to just call it slice of life at this point not recommended unless you want to waste time reading pointless novel this is just a budget arifureta I mean Budget about 1/10 of arifureta <<less

The plot is a bit out of place in this world, why would there be a godess be in the mortal plane, which looks or feels like nothing divine. The godess was never shown to have belivers or the people around here never treated her as some absolute being which could destroy them easily, the only thing you can deciphere is that they respect here.

I questioned myself through the whole series if that bit*h really is from the heaves as described in the series, her personality is completely disgusting, as... more>> she looks completly down on the weak and takes herself as something grand.

His school mates aren't any better, yeah he was probably socially distent with his friends because of his reasons, but there is no reason for them to agree with the godess to throw him somewhere who knows where just because he was judged as tr*sh by the godess, call me naive or something but thats not human nature.

Other than that the story progess is really good, how the others characters difficulties are described and how they overcome them, it's pretty relatable. I had fun reading it. <<less

Well MC is kind, idiotic, hypocrite, living in dream [ yes literally, as he is not willing to accept or either adept to the situation he is in ]

Spoiler: [[ Read this, one of the reason, I believe for many to directly drop this novel. ]]

------------------------------------------------

[I — I’m not going to fall in this place! Humans’ souls are not some kind of toy for you to play with! That’s why against this “comrades” of mine, I’m able to use my poison skill! I’ve used it on them! They’re monsters after... more>> all... no matter if my target has a “human” form... No matter what hateful things you expect me to do, towards them... I’m able to use my poison ability against them! T, That’s why I—]

Buwwaahh...

My tears came flowing down endlessly.

[I’m still a human... !]

And this is about when, MC friend personality change, some laugh as he was sentence to death in dungeon while some tell him that how useless he is, while goddess that someone them was showing her evil side saying all people with low level will be disposed of and some of his friends just ignored him while his class teacher try to stay up for him but only to be beaten *chop* in neck and get stunned [ as she is S class so she is worthy of living ].

After this he kill almost........... don't know how many monsters [ but he get to lv. 1299 something ]. And every time he cries saying what kind of thing is he doing.

--- Well I think his classmates may not be good people but they were definitely the fastest one to be able to adapt to the killings and other situations. While MC even after such suffering and killings he still is a kindred soul. His parents use to beat him up... his childhood was very miserable. His uncle adopt him and only teach him to be kind to others...[ well peter Parker for you..... lol....... why such people are not present in reality, man...] Sigh.... Well, if u still liked the story then read.

Spoiler:

MC ability >> giving people negative effect [ like all kind of sleep, paralysing, poisoning effects. In future he will get more too. Well the first thing MC thought after he get a magic book with many forbidden spell [ a inheritance like thing from dark hero ] was to find a person who can read it and then make him/her his companion and then defeat goddess with the help of him............I mean WTF??? seriously, man......i am not talking about what will happen.......I am talking about his initial thoughts...... Shouldn't it be that I should try to find some way so that I can learn this language and then master these spells so I can increase my strength [ as his ability is useless against goddess ]. Instead of letting someone else learn it and then depending on them....... shouldn't it be better to at leas think, like, I should learn it. But his main thought was that he should get someone so that he could depend on them [ even after just getting betrayed... he still didn't understand that what is needed in this world is his skill and strength.[ his own ] not of others. So instead of depending he should become strong [ I am not saying that he is super talented or genius but I am just simply saying that this should be the thought that should have come in his mind first hand...... but our MC is just something else [ really pathetic, I agree with goddess sama..]. Well he lv. up so fast, killed so many, get sentenced to death, betrayed by friends..... but he still didn't understand reality and cruelty of this world which is filled with war. ]So I am dropping this novel.[personally I just can't understand, when author write such a novel what is he thinking in his brain. Did he like masochist stuff or S&M stuff or something or he think this is something people should dream towards. Well, whether u wish to read or not. It's up to you [[ Sorry for my bad English... lol....i am practising ]] <<less

This novel is tr*sh, the premise is s*upid and the MC powers are brainless type of certain job/skill is tr*sh, but only the protagonist is the exception and everyone else was just ignorant. The author took out the two strongest enemies, aside the demon king and the goddess, in the beginning of the novel and the flow was so so from there on, where most of the conflict comes from the other characters acting s*upid, despite their elite education, experience in political struggle and living in a goddamn dog eat... more>> dog world filled with monsters, but why just do some dumb sh*t for the MC acts cools and save the day (i.e eve, kaichou morals and shit, arachne, etc). Not to mention the MC is so edgy, but not the fun type, but the cringe that makes you roll your eyes whenever he goes all brooding mood. <<less

Pros:

  1. Reasonable Character Growth - Characters don't just suddenly/arbitrarily become s*upid powerful (outside of the initial OP power boost that is rather standard with isekais). Even the MC who is overpowered shows reasonable growth over time and has decent restrictions to keep him in check.
  2. Character Development - While it is slow at times, overall the characters show good character development. And realistically, slow character development isn't necessarily a bad thing. After all it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for the FMC to fall madly in love with the MC within two chapters of meeting them (or worse, within a paragraph as some stories are). This isn't to say that it can't be frustrating at times, but overall I find this to be a breath of fresh air and an overall more enjoyable read at this point as it has allowed for things to not feel so forced; though I'm sure if someone started reading this back in 2017 when it launched then a reader might have found themselves pulling their hair out waiting for the MC and FMC to admit their feelings to each other.
  3. Character Personalities - There's a breadth of these here so if there's a personality-type that you don't like, chances are you will see it. But with that said, it also means that you're likely to see personalities that you do like. Also the MC is a pragmatic realist who's out for revenge, which very much plays into how he acts, as opposed to the more standard idealist who goes to unreasonable lengths to not kill those who are actively trying to kill them. Though if you want a story where people fight, MC beats those trying to active kill them, and then everyone holds hands as if the enemy wasn't just trying to chop the MC's head off... then this isn't for you.
Cons:

  1. Japanese Paragraph Syntax - While there's no issue with how the sentences themselves are written, it isn't uncommon for what should be a single paragraph to instead be multiple lines. For example:
    Spoiler

Even in the absence of Seras, she continued to take firm action. Our flanks were somewhat pushed back. However, the central flank is somewhat holding its ground.

    [collapse]
Note that each of these three sentences (pulled straight from c269) are written as their own line in the story (in addition to another three lines that I didn't want to type out since you can't C&P from the LN). The sentences themselves are well translated, but all six sentences should be slightly rewritten and combined into a single paragraph. For those that are expecting a more standard English style of writing, they will potentially find this type of formatting to be somewhat jarring and detract from the story itself (as other reviews indeed comment on this).
Pro/Con/Neutral:

  1. Amount of Characters - A whole class got teleported to the other world. While they don't name every single character (and some of the ones that they do name aren't mentioned but a handful of times), there's still nine people from the class that are regularly talked about, split into four groups plus the MC, with a few others from the class somewhat regularly mentioned as well (so like 13-14 names of classmates alone). Throw in all of the various people on the Goddess's side, the MC's side, and miscellaneous other stuff, and you're talking about probably 30+ different characters. Luckily most of them are slowly introduced/removed over time, so the hardest part is keeping the initial classmates straight, but in all it's a lot of characters. Makes for good world building and what not, but can be overwhelming for some readers.
  2. Death - Yes, people die. LOTS of people die. While there are some people who have the "I don't want/refuse to kill" attitude, in general be prepared for people to die. I find this to be far better than all the stories where the MC unreasonably refuses to kill and it magically works out, but I'm sure others would view such a thing as a con.
Overall I've found Failure Frame to be a very well written betrayal/revenge sort of story. It's also a good break from the standard OP MC (the character's skill itself is blatantly OP, but the character himself is comparatively weak and with restrictions on his skill, and thus he has to use his brain to use his skill instead of just mongo'ing his way through things. Though in the right situations he is able to go full mongo as well). If you're looking for a well written story that doesn't shy away from blood/death and don't mind the paragraph syntax, the slower speed of events, and number of characters, then I would highly recommend giving this a read.

It's dumb like a few other LN similar to this, the beginning plot rely only on the goddess being evil (which is not abnormal) and the classmates also which is dumb. Do you really think a bunch of nomal highschoolers can suddenly become heartless and cruel enough to let somebody they know die when transported to another world?

I felt like updating/revising this.

This is a whole-class-isekai-then-MC-immediately-exiled novel, and a pretty well written one.

There is no harem. Only one serious love interest.

Major fights can be pretty interesting. All Touka needs to win is to use his skill on his opponent, and they will be locked into a guaranteed death combo. Sounds simple, right? Except that it takes time to chant, has limited range, plus other required conditions to land it. Major fights usually revolve around trying to create an opportunity against opponents capable of, say, killing him to death... more>> from outside his range faster than he can chant. The most recent fight in particular was quite the thriller, with an opponent who is not completely gullible, and some quality mindgames.

The novel also does a good job of not giving Touka any deus-ex-machina bullsh*t mid-fight. Touka does everything using tools already known to the reader. The exception is during his first time fighting, where he is s**tting bricks and figuring out how his skills actually work.

The other thing I like about this novel: It has direction. The story actually goes somewhere. Touka doesn't waste your time with sightseeing, grinding guild quests, picking up girls, etc. On the other hand, the novel can have the pacing of Dragon Ball Z at times. But not always. Things have picked up like crazy in more recent arcs.

Characters are slowly but surely getting fleshed out over time. There are also themes of different types of characters. Good people who wouldn't hurt a fly, even if that fly mu*dered their families. Bad people who treat everyone like garbage if they can get away with it. "Grey" people such as Touka who are generally good, but will get their hands bloody if they need to. <<less

MC is a weakass summoned hero, persecuted and thrown to a killer dungeon. Cliche first arc.

Good points: great details on every scene. MC understands his strength and weakness, uses his head adequately, not as wimpy as typical isekai trope MC.

Bad points: great details on every scene to the point that it's repetitive and redundant and tiring to read. Yes, taking a single literal steps needs like 5 paragraphs. Author is wimpy, he often changes his mind in the middle of world building. Very high stats? Nerfed. Very OP cheaty skills?... more>> Nerfed. Very lame high level stats and skills due to his own nerf? Killed everything thereafter with only 2 words. Plot is about revenge? MC takes it slow.

Also, I have to say this. This is the worst of the worst part in this novel as far as I went through it.

Spoiler

killer dungeon: ruthless MC killed everything, full of hatred and vigor

Literally first thing outside that dungeon: "oh hey slime-chan, wanna go with me?"

Oh hell no I dropped this in an instant. <<less

At first, I love this novel, but not anymore. This is just so bad. I hate the way how the author write the novel. Search for nobodyimport's review, you'll know what I meant.

Basically, the more the chapter, the less the content. Now it just about 25% content (per chapter), the rest is just filler that have the same meaning as the content but with different wordings.

It's frustrating

It's such a bad story. First off, the premise is generic isekai revenge - which I am a sucker for. However the execution of the story is so boring and terrible that I skip entire chapters and didn't miss a beat in the story. For example, the first 40 chapters are just him crawling through dungeon. Now it can be entertaining but the story takes any fun out of it. He basically has 3 skills: Paralysis, Poison and Sleep and he just spams those 3 skills. It's not very entertaining... more>> to read when that's all he does. When he levels up it just gives him a bunch of stats. We don't even know how high those stats are because they are just meaningless numbers. No frame of reference whatsoever because his stats are the only thing we see. We don't see the stats affecting him in any way. I read up to chapter 65 and he still feels like he's a character from chapter 1. I tried sticking around to see him tr*shing his former classmates but I give up. Honestly, this is the most boring story I have ever read. <<less

Bland garbage. This series also suffers from the eight deadly words -- "I don't care what happens to these people." None of the side characters are interesting, and they act in absurd and irrational ways (especially Ayaka, who is a ridiculous hypocrite with a severe messiah complex). Find something better to read.

-Strongly recommend reading until chapter 72 to judge this before dropping it. 7.5/10 in the isekai ranking, I would rate this higher if only those POVs surrounding the insufferable, lazy written characters didn't exist (or done better).

-On the surface, this might seem like another 1 of those op isekai protagonist shit, but our mc's abilities are actually pretty balance. Basically, without spoiling anything, our MC have a skill that can guarantee victory as long as it hit the target but his tr*sh stats bottleneck it so he'll have to relies... more>> on underhand tactics or thinking ahead to win so most of his fight is just mind game and there'll be a lot of thinking and monologue in this.

- Compare this to another "similar" isekai: Arifureta, the story is much more enjoyable without the regular tsukkomi every 5 minutes and the harem sh*t. This won't go downhill basically.

-Main Character: Our MC is a man of focus and commitment who command respect to people who know him. He's an Anti-Hero who doesn't mind torturing/trample over his enemy but kind to people in general as he spent most of his time being low-key and vigilant toward the surrounding.

-Power system: There are stats but it's unreliable as we rarely get to see and compare character's stats, we only know that our mc's stats are tr*sh even at lv 2000+, except for his mana.

-Romance: The best and most enjoyable factor in this in my opinion. There are romance in this but both character respect each other's goal and feeling so we'll have some romantic interactions here and there, it will be short, sweet and wholesome, but things won't go too far. Our MC is very bold with his compliments so he'll attract feeling from many girls but they respect the heroin so there likely won't be harem in this.

-World building: Acceptable, but there's nothing remarkable about this.

-Character writing: Just like most Isekai with multiple transported individual, aside from our main cast, strong people are narcistic douchebag and weak people just mindlessly follow the current, basically black and white morality.

-Combat: Basically mind game, plot twist and trickery all the time, which got a little bit balanced out by random POV sometime.

CONCLUSION: Overall a very solid read inside the revenge isekai genre, not too light-hearted, not too edgy, not too overpowered couple with the right amount of romance. Unfortunately, character writing are below mid. <<less

I've continued reading this after it hit ongoing sometime ago. To be honest, I do remember having some expectations.

My impression now, however, it seems like the story has just become another problem generator.

It felt like the author's trying to push the intensity. Everything's bad everything's bad, tense tense, childish childish, add this one buffoon of a girl to make it seem even tenser. It failed tho, doesn't exactly work for me.

The first however many chapters was good. How many exactly, is up until the point you realize that at ch 76, I have yet to see the purpose of levels and stats. This book should not include the OP tag as the MC is not OP, but just has cheat like abilities.

Spoiler

The mc's level is in the THOUSANDS, his stats are in the many of THOUSANDS, and although the author makes everyone else's stats ambiguous after the beginning with no comparison later on, this just makes me feel that the... more>> stats don't apply to the MC.

Take for instance strength. Today you can lift 50 lbs with a strength stat of 10. Theoretically, at a strength stat of 1000, you can lift 5000 lbs if each point is worth 5 lbs. Now, I know that it is not broken down in the story but it is annoying to include stats and not make it worthwhile for the reader.

Writer sucks, world seems decent, there's a lot of things that are pretty obvious and predictable (or ive read too many stories). What irks me is that author took so long to finish what couldve taken like 10 chapters of a normal light novel. The fact that MC doesn't notice that using his skills a lot levels them up is dumb, or the fact that he doesn't even notice that his boosted stats let him crush dragon bones seems real dumb to me. He doesn't even try to learn enough... more>> about the society the moment he gets the chance and ignores everything aside from what he wants is kinda ret*rded. Half naked elf in the cover, obvious revenge plot in the description, harem tag, mention of "skill" in the title which implied overpowered character which usually makes stuff boring, so I kinda expected cliché isekai trásh, but eh... it's actually not that bad?

Though it is not perfect, it is cliché, edgy, and it's annoying how every women is half naked, or how every MC's companion is female, also it's annoying how author constantly changing perspective to other characters which I don't care very much. But the story telling itself is... more>> pretty good, it actually progress, and somehow manage to keep things relatively interesting, and MC isn't as annoying as I thought it would be, at least the fact that MC isn't dense, dumb, indecisive, belligerent, and h**ny is honestly shocking to me, in a good way. <<less
