TL;DR: It may be a bit confusing at first but so far the story's solid. Additionally, I see the potential for this to be good, but also to be incredibly generic. I'll update my review later if my thoughts ever change.

The moment I picked up this novel, I thought that the pacing was really wonky. Near the beginning, the author tried to do something interesting when it really would've been more effective to use a more linear narrative. Starting out in a super confusing way really wasn't appealing, and just... more>> made me want to stop reading. Eventually, it stops jumping around but still leaves you wishing the author didn't beat around the bush when the backstory wasn't that interesting. I've caught up on the most recent chapter (c34), but we still haven't caught up with the flash-forward at the very beginning.

Spoiler

It made me wonder why that was placed there in the first place seeing as we all can guess our overpowered protagonist will be getting an equally powerful dragon the moment they mentioned he would get one at all. And in the beginning they didn't explain anything, making me wonder if the author was really just trying to confuse the reader.

[collapse]

As others have already mentioned, there's a lot of world-building to support its internal logic. For one thing, this isn't even an isekai, but it doesn't make a difference seeing as the protagonist is just as "meh" as one from a generic isekai. But putting aside the lack of any real personality for characters, the fantasy world has a few concepts you don't really see often. However, I can't commit to this novel actually being "good" yet. There are no real clues about where the story would take itself to keep things interesting. It's spent a lot of time establishing what's already happened instead of setting up future plot points, so it could even settle into a "slice of life" format for all I know.

Edit: Moved the TL;DR to the top of my review because why didn't I do that earlier <<less

The novel is ok but it's not great either. The time skipping isn't that bad, it was only a bit crazy at the first few chapters to lay some groundwork for the MC's backstory. The actual story starts around chapter 3 part 1. And I do say is interesting.. especially the shadow/underworld stuff..
As already mentioned the chapters are broken into parts.. which I didn't really like but can live with.

My main issue comes from the MC. I understand why he doesn't want to be a dragon master and was... more>> force to be one. But he could at least try to know some stuff about them or learn something that can benefit his shadow life. Or even do it to maintain his cover a bit because he mentions multiple times how he didn't want to "stand-out"... like hello? trying to not follow the normal too much is standing out, he even got a few warnings about it... honestly, it just seems like it was given to MC because it would be cool plot armor.. but doesn't really do much if the MC is like idgaf

I find it more irritating really and somewhat ruined the novel because of that lack of motivation.. at least make him somewhat interested in a few things about it. To the MC, its basically a job he is doing just so he can say he has a job.. and just like in real life.. people in that kind of job hate it. Just kills the mood.. <<less

My first impression is that there is a lot of world-building early on (feels like things only start moving after 20 chapters), which might turn some people off. Frankly, I'm tired of authors writing fantasy novels with no distinct characteristics in terms of the world, so this isn't a problem for me. At least, what I've seen so far seems interesting. The idea of a protagonist who has three vary different occupations is outlandish, so I'm curious to see if it's as fun and unpredictable as the Japanese reviews say.

I... more>> will update this review as we get further in (I'm the translator). <<less

Long story short: story is all over the place.

Quite literally, for it’s not even told in a linear format. Once I get used to one chapter, and expect the story from that chapter to continue, we suddenly get the most random time skip ever and the story moves on to something else entirely, without a decisive ending to the previous chapter.

I don’t know if the author has gotten any better within the next 100 chapters, but I’m giving this one a drop. I have never seen such inconsistent writing. Even... more>> the Black Clover manga had much better writing than this - and I didn’t like that manga because of how rushed the beginning arcs were. It’s such a waste, because it’s actual synopsis sounded interesting. <<less

This is the first time I’m doing a review. Tiger Translations put out the call to write reviews and I answered.

As seen with various Manhuas and web comics, there is a prologue chapter that is itself a spoiler/ or it previews the entire arc or more. The first, say 4-6 chapters are exactly that. The story itself is great. The author’s choice of how to do their prologue is not to be admired, but is still well done nonetheless in my opinion once you recognize it as being a preview... more>> of the Arc. To sum it up quickly, the protagonist Leon: trains as an assassin from like age 4, aspires to be a small town baker, gets a dragon mark, fights other assassins, goes to school, find out he gets an awesome dragon. That is the first 4 chapters in a nutshell. Time then reverts and progresses at a much smoother pace as seen in other web novels.

The first person that reviewed this, Wyntile, did not do it justice by simply giving up and assuming the author kept the same template. While, it was their choice to give up on reading as I have done the same, I do not agree with their judgement to put a bad review on it. Going out of their way to inform the public that it’s a bad story despite not going very far is in bad taste in my opinion.

If nothing else, please check out Tiger Trans other project Tensei Kenja. <<less

The story is just plain. I lost interest in this novel the moment I noticed the protagonist is just a dog of royalty without individual thoughts, other than aspiring to be a baker. The action is by no means exciting and there are no depth in the plots. Not recommended.

The plot and story is interesting enough and at the beginning it drew me in well enough. My problem with this story is its just that. The story never really gets more interesting and never really gets you to want the next chapter. The writing is bland and boring and the main character feels like an emotionless rock that feels like it's more for a self insert than a real character. It's just plain boring.

The first few chapters act as "introductory teasers", a bit like the "chapter 0" of some manga out there. After that is out of the way, the story is picked up from a slightly earlier part (compared to the final "teaser" chapter, though after the earliest one) and then continued in a standard linear fashion.

There is definitely some world building info segments, however none of them felt like an info dump (your mileage may vary) as they tended to be either done through character narration, or conversations between characters.

While it... more>> is noteworthy that the protagonist is overpowered, they seem to not recognise it because they focus more on what they should do and need to do, having been brought up to follow rules (legal and social). This is also aided in the protagonist being rather laid-back mentally. They don't over-think or over-analyse things, instead simply carrying out their pre-planned actions or reacting as they have become accustomed to doing.

As of Chapter 21, we have yet to see the protagonist's dragon, however other dragons have been both mentioned and shown. It seems that at this point, we're still in the world-introduction arc that sets the scene for the main story.

I find myself optimistically looking forward to finding out more about the protagonist's personality as well as seeing more development in the relationships of those around the protagonist. <<less

This is a pretty fun novel, with a (perhaps overly serious take on) realistic military strategy and politics and slow but satisfying romance. Ignore reviews from people who drop the novel before chapter 5 - the author bungled up the intro's plot sequencing and does a much better job in the next few chapters with the world building. It's a good read, with a good balance between lighthearted scenes and serious ones.

The TLN does a great job, but the author deleted the source work on Syosetu after c79 so you... more>> can't read the rest unless you buy the LN. Sad end to a pretty fun to read series for me. <<less

i like the story and how MC didn't realize his OPness due to lack of direct experience and knowledge. And RAW finished so I wish this WN can be translated till the end

Super OP assassin boy gets chosen to be a dragon master, but all he wants is to be a baker! Get ready for some OP combat with silly situations! Only not.

This story can't really meet any of its own expectations. The MC is a stoic fighter who wants to just give it all up and be a baker. And the contrast between that and his absolute OPness creates some silly situations when he interacts with others to keep things comedic. And the author has created an interesting fantasy world for... more>> this comedic tone. He even threw in a vague enough backstory to expand on for the current OPness. As well as a magic marking to set up for future new OPness. Now all we need is a plot. And that's where the author dropped the ball. I'm on ch79 and the MC is still a year away from getting the dragon mentioned in the summary. The moon beasts have been introduced but I have no idea what "paradise" is because it hasn't come up yet. The whole thing reads like a shounen LN that thinks it is a slice-of-life story. It is just too slow. There is tons character interaction to advance the plot, but it moves so slowly that it feels like filler.

Interesting ideas but poor execution. Still enjoyable but the pace is frustrating. <<less

Feels a lot more like an actual novel than your typical web novel. I'd agree that it mostly keeps away from info dumps, and instead waits to present new information when it is actually plot relevant. If that's badly done, it makes it feel like stuff is being made up on the spot, but this feels like it has preestablished world building that is just slowly being revealed to us. Warning, it delves pretty heavily into political and trade machinations, so if you're looking for nonstop action sequences, this might... more>> not be your kind of story.

I can't decide if this story is anti-immigrant or just honestly depicting the issues and distrust caused by a rapidly increasing immigrant population. I feel like there have been several instances of "poor people from slums and pardoned criminals" mentioned as a single group, which just seems dehumanizing. But on the other hand, the foreign government in this series is actually pushing those people to emigrate to tax MC's country public order. I hate it when authors espouse nationalist agendas, so I hope this series doesn't go this route through a fantasy world analogue. Again, I'm not sure this series is going that direction, I just hope that it isn't.

Edit: Raw was taken down by author, with a note that they plan to put it back up somewhere, sometime. <<less

There's nothing too bad about this story as of right now. The story is a slow burn and well translated.

If you have the time and patience to wait for the story to unfold, it's a good read. As to when the story really unfold, not sure but judging by the writing, the pay off for waiting should be worth it.

I quite like the pace of this story, the MC is quite a refreshing taste as compared to the standard ones... He is dense in the sense that he is super op but doesn't realise it but that's cos of the way he was brought up than anything else though lol.... I look forward to more of his antics in the future
