“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

Wow. Ok I'm so blown away by this novel. Before this let me talk what I've considered a few novels that I put really high up my list and some of them included: Earth online, thrive in catastrophe. Why I thought of these two novels was because firstly I have a biased love for horror stories. Earth online has a very beautifully crafted story plot and thrive in catastrophe has a very deep story line that leaves you thinking over why humanity has fallen to this extent. (Its pretty dark... more>> but still generally HE flags everywhere)

This novel however, is like a mixture of the two but a completely different experience. One sad thing is its too short. I wished the author could prolong it because the story seemed rushed altho this might be a bit of a confusing term. Why I say the plot is rushed is because the world described in the story is very novel, I would have loved to delve deeper in it for 1000 more chapters because it seemed like a loss. Like the other reviews have said, its such a tragic story. I kept wondering how could anything get better when the situation just got worse and worse that there seemed to be no hope. Thats why I said this story is different. The author is unafraid to delve into these territories because she/he knows exactly how the story would end. And thats why its so perfect because stories that start off knowing how it would end always tie together so perfectly. I would say thrive on catastrophe was infinitely close to that but still fail in comparison to this novel.

Romance wise, it was rather slow. They never clearly expressed their feelings but when their circumstances challenged them in this regard, they couldnt help but struggle against their fate and their feelings. It was beautiful.

Spoiler

The climax in their romance happened when our MC escaped from the base with his spore. Our ML came to retrieve him and his spore and recieved a command to kill MC on sight. However, you'd think the way ML reacted upon seeing MC would seem as if he had disregarded this order.. But then he held a gun at MC head and told him he had to kill him. It was so breathtakingly tragic like I could literally see our MC and ML heart crying even tho the author didnt write anything. This is how you know the characters were written so perfectly because I had fallen so deep into the story. And then MC whispered to ML in half fear half sadness, that he 'hated'ML. No other words were mentioned. But I could tell they prob stared at each other wondering who would give in first. Then the ML tossed the gun away and embraced MC tightly. MC Also started bawling. He didnt say sorry for those words but I could tell ML didnt believe him when he said he hated him.

[collapse]

Spoiler

This is towards the end where MC had left ML. In his dying body, he cried to his companion. Since MC is a mushroom, he isnt able to comprehend human emotions. But he doesnt understand that his love for the ML had made him human. In his dying breath he finally understood he loved ML. He wanted so badly to see him yet told his companion to tell him MC left the base.. Not that he died. My heart felt so much hurt.

[collapse]
and this is why I say the story is so beautiful. A love like this that transcends emotions, humanity and selfishness. A love this beautiful could be compared to LWJ love for WWX. One that is solely for the other. <<less

At this point I've simply accepted that Chinese novels have incredibly bad synopses. Like, 100% unrelated to the contents or tone of the book. This book's summary is a particularly egregious example.

This is an apocalypse story. The romance is minimal. ... more>>
Spoiler

at least 95% of the human population at the start of the story - which is already a fraction of the population that once was - is dead by the end of it.

[collapse]

A trigger warning in spoiler tags for something that isn't a main plot point or directly shown, but is a background worldbuilding point:

Spoiler

a major background world building/plot point revealed in the second book is that all fertile women are forced to give up their freedom and be repeatedly imp**gnated over and over again. This is first revealed from the pov of a fertile child, so reading between the lines they must start underage

[collapse]

I am not giving this a rating. I finished this book because I needed to know how it ended, and I learned about myself that the apocalypse genre is not my taste. Therefore I can't rate it. I read it, it was well written, I disliked it anyway through no faults of its own.

The book is well written, if you like apocalypse fiction it's a good choice. A major theme is the line between humanity and being a monster. There's also a strong theme of the value of hope and kindness in the face of the utter futility of either.

Spoiler

there's a "happy ending" in the sense that humanity isn't completely annihilated, only mostly wiped out, and the two main characters are among those spared.

Incredible story, not like your usual brainless fluff. The author put much thought into the story and main characters are likeable. Don't be put off by the tragedy tags, and give this a read. I didn't think I would enjoy a Sci-Fi story this much and I look forward to the extras.

Great world building and things make sense. If there's only yaoi scenes, it would be perfect, lol. But overall, it's highly recommended to read.

? I can easily say THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES!! ?

I cried.?

I was on the edge of my seat. ?

The slow maturity of their relationship was heart warming and gut wrenching.?

The despair in the story sometimes left me wondering if this was going to end badly...?

And the translation was good.?

The reasons I didn't give it 5 stars?

Spoiler

I wanted more romance. I also wanted the MC to be more useful. He seemed pretty useless most of the time. I mean, most of the time people had to pull him out of danger cause his reaction time s**ked. He barely knew how to protect himself. ? And he was a bit of a cry baby towards the end. But I'm glad I got to see him grow into his emotions.

Also, some of the science theory was kind of boring and often contradicting each other so it was hard to follow some of the logic, so I skipped over some of those parts.?

But it's still one of my favs!! I'm putting it on my top ten of BL webnovels! ? <<less

Although it is still ongoing I really really had fun reading it.

I don't usually read this type of BL novel where there are not much smut interactions between the seme and uke but DAMN this novel changed my mind.

f*ck the romance between them, the story is enough to make me want to read more.

I'm also hoping for more extras from the author. I'd still like to read them ya know hahahahaha.

Ain’t gonna have a detailed review because everything that needs to be said is already said by other reviews but as a reader...

Its my first time giving 5 stars however it is because this story deserves it, well written, thought provoking, heart stabbing emotional work that made me cry at 5am in the morning. Its a beautiful story with beautiful characters and the good and bad of humanity.

Just give this a read and you won’t regret the time and heart you’ve spent reading.

Hey~~ I like this novel. It almost like 'The Laws of The Other World' with all the infection from mutation plants and animals. It's apocalypse but not Zombies.

I only read till c.32 and all characters I met, died. At this point, I feels like Attack on Titan again ahahaha

The relationship between MC and ML at this point is between acquaintance and friends. The ML suspected MC is not human (he is not) while MC afraid of ML finding out but still need to get close to find his spore.

I read the last chapters of the raw (MT).

I absolutely adore the story. It is not your typical apocalypse setting and feels really fresh. The characters are very profound and their feelings and character are well thought through. I love the little mushroom who feels more human than every other human in the story, despite not actually being one. He gains even more of a human feeling the further the story goes. The judge as ML is a little bit lacking in comparison, but still a great character.

The story is... more>> shonen-ai, but the MC and ML never go further than a kiss. If you want a lot of bl action, this isn´t for you. Even thou, the mutual feelings they share go very deep and I am rooting for them. <<less

Never have I ever been so invested in a danmei novel. The story is unique and heart-wrenching, the characters make me shred tears, and the writing leaves me content. Every chapter is a roller coaster of emotions and thus, I can only say that this is the best danmei novel ever written.

Don't let the summary fool you. This story is filled to the brim with knives. Slowly cutting your heart into pieces. But it is so good that you'll gladly hand your heart over. And when you're crying your heart out over a mushroom, just remember this: It is a happy ending!!!

I'll say it again!

This! Story! Is! SO! GOOD!!!!!

(I've never left a review before. That's how good this story is!!!!)

I know it's too early to leave comments but this is a masterpiece!! I love the way the author wrote the story. It is so fantasy, I can imagine what is happening. I love it. It is so different from the other apocalypse genre this is nice. Thank you author for creating a masterpiece. Thank you translator for translating this story. I love it. ❤️? Update:

This is one heck of a coaster ride. It gives you crying moments, sad moments, heartbreaking moments. However there are also heart touching moments or fluffs... more>> and sweetness so it kinda balance each. I really love this story. <<less

Every Trial Judge have rules to follow to save the man kind to it's end. It might be cruel to others but it's good for all. Others might hate them but its the rules. Human must survive! And kill the monster!

Destiny makes them meet. A ruthless judge who only follow the rules. A judge who can identify the target in 100% rate. The person who don't even blink in killing monster. A joke of fate to introduce him to the innocent mushrooms. A bystander one who just want to protect... more>> its spore and take care of it until its end.

He knows he's right. His intuition never been wrong. He knows that the teenager standing in front of him is weird but why the machines saying his wrong. Did his intuition failed? or this person is just weird.

One person that makes him doubt his intuition. The person who makes him hesitate by more than ones. The person who will change his life. The person he didn't expect who will judge him and he's the one who give the privilege to do so... that little mushroom.

It's a really interesting concept of apocalypse and different than other apocalypse genre. It's not full of angst or misunderstanding but it's also not the sweet fluffy kind. There are some sweet interactions here and there.

It's a Happy Ending!

Many times when you read this you feel like it's going to be a Bad Ending but it's not so just hold on!

One thing I want to complain is the lack of extras QAQ

This became one of my favourite novels so far. Action parts are amazing. Summary seems fluffy tho you should prepare yourself for the coming sad and depressing events. I love tht both MC and ML are strong. I'm satisfied with fluffy parts too. This whole novel will give you mixed emotions.

in a post apocalyptic world where the planet lost its magnetism and mutant creatures multiply and diversify, stealing genes from each other and preying on human to get their mental ability and infecting them with their own to turn them into mutant, most of humanity survive in fortified cities covered by artificial magnetic field in order to repulse the infection

in all that, a little mushroom happen upon a dying human explorer and accidentally get infected with human genes and memories, able to take the appearance of the human, it start to search for his spores that were collected long ago by a "judge", an human trained to recognize infected people and kill them on the spot to protect humanity

the background of the story is gloomy, but it is not dehumanising, every person is well fleshed out, every death is heavy, and there is a lot of those, yet you still want to root for an happy ending and for the judge and the little mushroom to resolve their difference and be at peace

"He's just... a little mushroom" Sometimes, he feels like a god, other times more humane than humans.

The tone of the novel is very sombre, like a sweet lullaby, although most of the time the lullaby felt like a story from Grimm's fairy tales. While reading the novel, I had to go back to the synopsis countless times to confirm that it indeed had a HE. It felt terribly sad and hopeless sometimes, but An Zhe's stories and feelings and thoughts made one want to keep going.

Beautiful.

There were very poignant moments that made me love the novel.

The story unravels the world with thought-provoking words that makes it very much more than a romance story.

... more>> Indeed, the world building was pretty solid and as the story goes, it is well-written (which others have already mentioned).

It leans more towards a serious plot than a soft cute one, with fleshed-out characters and intriguing circumstances.

I actually read this novel a long time ago but found it again and decided to give a review.

The novel came up when I was searching through the doomsday genres and I was at first reluctant to read it because of the author's blurb (which made it sound like a fluffy love story - it was used as a description on NU at the time) but I'm glad I decided to read it after all.

--Still among the best novels I've encountered after so many years. <<less

The romance is slow and interaction between An zhi and Lu feng is so little that it shouldn't be called "slow romance" the better term is fast romance. I cannot find myself to give a single f*ck about the story, its safe to say that I am Not into the sci-fi genre. It only looks cool in the heavy set cgi marvel movies. Humans are visual creatures and its really brain burning to visualize so Much going on. You know what I am saying, and the interaction btween these two... more>> people who are supposed to love eachother like its their last time together but interaction is like grain of sand and most of the time Lu feng is "cold and Cold and cold. And An Zhi is expressionless because he is a "mushroom" so no emotions no smiling crying laughing. Like Give me Something man come On. Istg in order to avoid extra writing the authors love this trope of the Gong being "Cold" and the shou is Dumb so no expectations from him either.

Some chapters are just fillers scroll past I ain't reading allat.
