Zhang Ruo Chen was the sole male heir of one of the nine emperors of the Kunlun Field. Ruo Chen’s father was known to all as the “Enlightened Emperor”, however Ruo Chen didn’t just leech off his status as emperor’s son. He proved himself to be a dragon amongst men, possessing a heaven defying body, and managing to cultivate to Greater Perfection within the Yellow Horizon Realm, at just the young age of 16.

But even though he stood at the summit of the younger generation and had a boundless future, he sadly died at the treacherous hands of his own fiancee at a young age.

Reincarnated 800 years later in the body of a young boy who shares his name, he found out his former fiancee already unified Kunlun’s Field and built the First Central Empire, and was now known as Empress Chi Yao… Empress Chi Yao—Her Majesty governed the mortal world and enjoyed prestige in all directions as well as an eternal life.

Zhang Ruochen stood outside of the Imperial Ancestral Temple, looking at the statue of Empress Chi Yao, and the flames of hatred burned in his heart. “After I practice for 13 years, I shall send the empress to her doom!”

Just a head up - the translation is bad. The only thing I liked about QI was that all the novels I read there had solid translations. Not this one. Feels like a little edited machine translations. And it is also inconsistent, though that could be from the author as well.

Example is all these Follwing the Mind and Following the Heart levels, I still don't understand if there is a difference between the 2, or are they the same. Also when he was needed 200, 000 silver for the cauldron/pot/whatever for refining Spatial rings, he sold the first ring for 100, 000, then wins 10, 00 (those are the numbers in the translation) and bum, he has enough money.... also says that if he comes back to the fighting ring and wins again he can get 1 million, a few chapters later - Oh I can go fighting again and win that 10 million,

wins - here is your 1 million.

The first few chapters really do leave the impression that all women are evil, but it gets normal later, with a balance of beautiful good women and beautiful bad women. Though I am only at ch. 58 so who knows how it will progress in the future. <<less

Reading up until chapter 755 before I decided to stop. MC is too merciful avoiding to kill his enemies only to find them come back to fight him again and again. MC has disguised himself under different identity but still keep drawing attentions to himself by using treasure/holy weapons that cause doubt over his identity. Poor translation in many chapters are just too annoying, e.g. He becomes she, cultivators are called monks, etc. There are many more outstanding novels out there to read so don't waste your time on this... more>> like me only to stop after hundreds of chapters read. <<less

This is already an average novel at best, with lots of cliches and drawn out cultivation description that's too boring to read. But translation group comes along and just makes it worse with their translation/editing skills. You've got poor naming sense, poor grammar, bad sentence structure, and name changes at times.

They are calling cultivators "monks" so you have male and female monks. They are calling experts as masters or superiors, and then there's teachers as masters as well, so you can see how confusing it can get. They are also... more>> calling students of a certain academy as Saints, and then experts at the Saint realm as Saints. And here's just one of the many examples of poor grammar:

"I attend the Sword Technique Conference did not for marry the Thirteenth Commandery Princess."

I can handle commonly used cliches but it's difficult for me to read Engrish that ruins my immersion. But if you guys have read Castle of Black Iron, it's one step better than that because I wanted to stab my eyes out at times from reading COBI. The beginning of the novel was actually fine but at a certain point, you could see it deteriorating like an alcoholic.

After I've vented that out, there are some slightly new things about the novel which include our MC being a Prince of a low-ranked territory with many siblings. The story will revolve around the conflicts happening between different siblings and different territories, and this will continue moving the plot forward. The MC power-ups quite quickly but is still an underdog because he's surrounded by too many geniuses of this and that. Right now, it's mostly about MC's life from one school onto the next "stronger" school of the continent. Of course, people have to mess with him and his cohort everywhere he goes and he will have to make enemies out of all of them.

My advice is to read this if you're bored and go in with low expectations. <<less

One of the most pathetic MC's I've ever come across. Utterly useless. Characters are messed up. Only the antagonists are portrayed well. MC's w first woman who literally is forced on to him by author keeps creating trouble for him and all he does is keep putting out fires. He reveals his secrets to everyone, the best girl mu linxi in the novel is sidelined to be an observer instead despite her affections. He keeps struggling to get over the one who betrayed him apparently. Revenge? Pfft.. please! Only good... more>> thing about this novel is you get to binge read with a so-so translation. Rest is lacklustre. Disappointed. Typical Chinese writing where women throw themselves at MC. Although this dude's just stale in this novel. The translator keeps messing up as well with characters... You've no idea often if the person is a he/she since it's both used now and then.

Also this novel reminds me of Immortal Mortal. Entire story he keeps saying he wants to have revenge, but in the very end when he actually meets her, he's too OP a, swish prettyone move n she's gone. pretty much there's no action. Leaves one really hanging out. Let's see if this is any different in upcoming chapters. <<less

This novel really does have a frustrating beginning, your left in the dark on why most sh*t happens and the MC is still overly kind-hearted. The best part is that he actually grows throughout the novel, becoming ruthless, but yet still maintaining a semblance of humanity.

What really frustrated me is how long it takes to get information on why stuff happens, so you have to wait for 5-10 chapters on something that should of long been clarified. It's not really bad when you find out things do happen for a... more>> reason and that the plotholes aren't all that bad and forced compared to other xianxia/xuanhuan. <<less

I would have rated it 4/5 if not for the ton of nonsensical 1 star rewievs. It seems to me that these people take it badly if the story is not a powerfantasy.I can certainly understand, these novels are -after all- for escaping our normal life. But Zhang Ruochen is not a shell you can imagine yourself in, fulfilling fantasys and relieving stress. This is a serious drama with the MC and others having clear-cut personalitys. However, the start of the story is indeed a bit unrifined, but it quickly... more>> gets better. Also, the author do not hate women. In a sense, it helps and symbolises the MC's change as he slowly opens his heart again (that is my opinion, and I base it upon my knowledge of the later chapters where women are "normal", and other things I wont talk about as they are too big spoilers)

Others have wrote a ton about why this is a great read, so I'm going to write about my favorite part, the MC. The character-development is among the best I have read, and this comes at a price, namely that the MC is really ill-fated, and he goes through a lot of shit. I can understand if this makes people sick after some time, as this novel is very emotionally demanding. Now, about the MC: He has a very different motivation then most Chinese novel's MCs. He does not really want power or eternal life. He would be satisfied with a quiet life (of course, for this, he needs closure on the Chy Yao case, and all that comes with it). But his responibilitys wont let him do it. It is a constant struggle, in which he slowly embodies the ideal leader of Socrates. The author is not afraid of really exploring moral dilemmas either.

Spoiler

A good example would be his relationship with Kunlun after the Moon Godess took him away, or how him becoming half vampire and residing in the Hell realm changed him.

[collapse]

I also find the plotline with Chi Yao really intriguing. Firstly, in most cultivation novels, the "upper levels" are not shown for the MC, becomeing a convinience for the author, with the reason that it would crush the MC's dao heart. Our MC, on the other hand, always has some seemingly unreachable enemy. Secondly, the complexity of emotions and clash of different worldviews are butifully executed. This comes to a conclusion around Chapter 2800, and it is a very satisfying one for me.

Spoiler

If someone whom you love betrays you, how can you solve it? Whatever you do, it will leave a scar on your soul. Now, if said loved one betrays you for "good reasons", and wants good to you, but goes about it a wrong way, and even manipulates you "for your own good", leaving you in the dark, solving it becomes even worse. If we take into consideration that there are gods, fate, time travel and so on, it really becomes a hot, emotional mess. In my opinion, the author found a good way to solve this, taking revenge without lingering bitterness.

Ridiculous af. MC is basically the total opposite of most male MC from the same genre. Being led around and manipulated because of some greater good bullshit. MC seems wishy-washy and lack backbone. The author also throw a lot of ridiculous enemies or situation that make the readers slap their own face. Then again I fricking unable to understand of this "forced development" like revenge that has a twist in the end and make everything, life as a big lie. I despise this kind of storywriting, the prmise and plotline... more>> is crazy and the characters even more insane. <<less

For the MC to be born to nobility twice, yet still has this little of a brain is just pathetic.

He knows the Queen dislikes his mother, yet he's so passive. Is that how you care about your only family? You have 800 years of ancient knowledge, the son of a previous emperor. You know ancient techniques. You probably stashed a bunch of secret treasures in your past life. Use it. Make a bunch of superior protective equipment or move her out somewhere safe. Let the Ninth Princess that gets along... more>> with you, keep a watch on her.

That Ling Nigshang arrogant b*tch, just abolisher her cultivation and make her your maidservant. Utter humiliation. You don't have to kill her, she'd probably do it herself. Problem solved.

The misunderstandings doesn't come off as feigning s*upidity to create distance but just actual s*upidity.

He's in the martial school, he goes into the dorm, and outside the window he sees that tsundere bithc Huang Yunchan girl taking a bath, assumes it's a honey trap because another dude got beat up before, so basically uses one of his fist techniques and accidentally injures her, she faints. He heals her and leaves. Of course girl wakes up sees that she's wearing his clothing and thinks that he r*ped her, but he didn't and he made no effort to clear it up. Even his roommate the Duanme Xingling asked if he did some "unspeakable stuff" to her friend, he said yes. Instead of just honestly answering. What a splendid ret*rd. Also before that, that Zi Qian girl was a hired assassin sent to kill him, just off her. She isn't a girl throwing a tantrum, she tried to kill you, she's better off gone. Showing mercy is nice, but if someone's trying to kill you, mercy isn't needed. And a lot of casually conversations are just cringe.

I'm at the war arc, where Yunwu is having a war with Square commandery. Yunwu is trying to get help from Qianshu. The Commandery king is going to try to recommend him to the Thriteenth Princess. Care to guess who she is? Yeah, it's gonna be that tsundere bit*h Huang Yunchan. So he's trading one arrogant bit*h the Lin girl, for another more arrogant and even more stubborn bit*h in Huang when that Duanme Xingling girl actually likes him and is first actual female friend that he made. He'll probably say yes cause he's pathetic and the

it' s gonna happen anyway from the spoilers I've read. So, that's 3 b*tches that's gonna f*ck him over and he's still gonna forgive them all because he's just that much more pathetic

[collapse]

Novel has potential but ruined by bad translation, an annoying love interest, and a pathetic MC that doesn't fully use all his advantages and has no character development. 100 chapters is enough. Use your imagination for the rest. It'll probably be much better than what really happens. <<less

This is a good novel. Straightforward MC with clear determinations. There are lots of betrayal and trust issue which is rarely seen in any novel too. The main plot detail is still a mystery till now. So people trying to explain and downplay the novel in reviews who haven't even read 2k chapters must be the author himself. MC knows what he is doing and does not stray off the path. The only issue is that there is no ultimate joy moment for MC at all in every arc. Romance... more>> is there but not highly focused only in late arcs there is romance not like MC go dead crazy over a girl or something type of things

Also, most of the things like MC's resurrection and his past are still a mystery those people who are saying anything about it are just bullshitting. Just 1 small detail of his past has been revealed till now and most of the people MC has contact with don't know anything about what happened 800 years ago and his father's past.

The novel has been able to maintain its mystery till now and is still fun to read. It also shows that there are never good people without any greed and you need to stand up for your own survival.

I definitely recommend it. Don't follow the review which has not even read 100 chapters and has the balls to write 4-5 paragraph reviews. If you have read any CN you should first arc is kinda useless in any novel. <<less
