I really enjoy this story the mix of detective crime show with survival game meant you never got bored. The author did a really good job at writing horror and letting us see into the darkness of the human soul as well as the best part of it. Very well written until the least 3 chapters where I think the author rushed. I understood the story but it was too rushed to feel “real” if that makes any sense. So it’s a 4.6 out of 5 for me.

Also FZ was... more>> left hanging wish he had a connection with GX.

It started out great, it was my favorite novel and I waited each week for a new translated chapter, the worlds were interesting and the MC was badass....

BUT, halfway through I think the author started to change their mind about the story and new things popped up that didn't make much sense. Though they were small things at the beginning.

The end though felt rushed and there was too much info dump that completely diverged from the story thus far, and if the author had to make a footnote to explain... more>> the ending that just shows how badly thought out and explained it was.

Even then, there were many things I didn't understand. And at the end knowing that the title was meaningless was disappointing.

But most importantly the reasons for many things were forgotten when the author tried to wrap things up.... there were many contradictions, I read and re-read those 3 last chapters so many times, and in one paragraph it said one thing and in another it said the opposite or something that alluded to a contrary explanation.

To sum it up it could've been better. It felt too forced, like the author just saying "this is what it is because I said so".

But I did enjoy the first half so I still gave it 3 stars. <<less

The premise is quite similar to [Kaleidoscope of Death];

  • Players are dying/people who will die irl and the game gave them the opportunity to extend their life.
  • MC meet ML on his first world and got knowledge-carried by ML
  • "Sleep Time" at night where MC and ML roomed&sleep together
  • MC followed ML / ML accompanied MC on their next instances
Now I really like [Kaleidoscope of Death], in theory I should enjoy this one too, but I just can't like this MC... to quote line from the story, "When Si Yu (ML) is useful, he... more>> is President Si. When Si Yu is not useful, he is Little Si", MC relies on ML's knowledge in game, relies on ML's wealth/connection irl, but didn't give ML the respect/gratitude he deserves

It especially makes me mad when MC

Now despite the rant, I do like the concept of this story, the story itself is fine and since it is my personal preference that makes me hate MC's character, I'll rate this 4/5- recommend read (as long as you don't find MC annoying) <<less

the MC is fun and a little schizophrenic, you never know what his personality will be from chapter to chapter; ruthless devil cultivator, dogged police officer, playful child. the ML is super smart, devastatingly handsome, hyper-competent at everything and, of course, rich. despite some gore and some complex looks at human nature in all its ugliness via the MC cases, the first part was really good; nicely paced tension with moments of reflection, humor and friendship. that lasted until around the 11th copy when things started to get... complex. ... more>>

it was irritating when they started bringing in gods and fate, trips into the past which changes the present, false memories, phased reality, and so on.

the MTL was really easy to read up until that 11th copy, then it started to get confusing and the end was not what I expected. the first half and second half could almost be two separate stories with the same MC/ML. the first focused on the game and solving crimes and the second focused on the MC and ML's fate and identities, the MC's past, etc.. it lost all it's humor in the second half, especially towards the end, and now I'm completely confused about why he thought he was a demonic cultivator, though it's very possible I missed it in the MTL confusion.

I will certainly read the translated version because I had a LOT of confusion and questions about the second half/ end of the story and it left me feeling somewhat unhappy. this is really more of a 3.5 (it was a 4.5 until the 11th copy happened), but since there are no half points here I rounded up. <<less

I would like to point out that the title of this novel could be considered a clickbait.

With the sudden rise in popularity of xianxia genre after the success of MDZS, I'm sure many read the title expecting the MC's background to be a bit like that story. Well, in the first few arcs the MC briefly mentions his past life as a demonic cultivator, which is the reason why he's so fearless and can suppress the monsters in the mission world. You'd expect that the author is withholding information to... more>> build up curiosity and I thought it was a good choice to not dive headfirst into his backstory at first, but then all the promises the author gave us feel short. There's no backstory. It's fake. This is spoilers but the only thing I'm going to hint at is there's no demonic cultivator.

And here's another warning towards people who are strict towards worldbuilding: this story's worldbuilding falls apart in the latter of the story. It becomes a load of crap to be honest. There are tons of novels with interesting plots and worlds that draw you in and they tend to be very entertaining at first, but as the story progresses you wonder how, with this sort of premise, is the story going to end in a happy ending. This novel, with the time limit on one's life being determined by how many missions you can clear, is definitely that sort of premise. Like, are the main leads supposed to go into mission worlds forever to extend their lives? Because that sounds like a nightmare to me. So, possibly having come to the same realization as the readers, the author proceeded to uproot the premise of her story altogether. The ML who we thought was just a really good player? Hah. The MC who was supposed to be a demonic cultivator in his last life? Bah. It's the type of ending that leaves readers feeling like they've been let down by the great promising start and have wasted their time. Not to mention the rules and creation of the mission world, there's so many plotholes and questions it just makes me want to give up in place of the author. (It really does feel like she gave up trying to explain her story in a logical way)

Onto the few good points.

  • I quite like the relationship between MC and ML, they both have what they're good at and seem to be on equal standing, which fits my preferences.
  • The story is divided into two sections, the mission world and the real world. Once an arc in the mission world (horror, adventure genres) is finished, it is usually followed by an arc in the real world, which revolves around MC's police detective investigations. (Mystery, crime genres) and then it will swap back to the mission world again. I'm not complaining on this one since it makes the story versatile and lets you know what to expect, it also doesn't make going into the mission world boring since that can happen if it gets too repetitive without anything to let you catch a break.
So at first I was going to give this a 4-star rating, but then came across Kaleidoscope of Death, which is a much better read and also older than this story by a year. What I'm suggesting is one of the good parts of this novel, the mission worlds, isn't the author's original idea. It's not like she copied another story but it does seem like KoD is the template. No wonder why I felt the ML's logic in just "ignoring" the monsters doesn't completely make sense (in KoD the ML does this too and there's good reason for it, but in this story this just gets used in every darn world and the reason why it works isn't provided by the author) hence why I subtracted a star.

TL;DR: Read this only until the middle of the story, since the latter of this novel will surely confuse and disappoint you. <<less

Something that makes me appreciated this novel is, the characterization is good.

The MC, ML, side characters, even the cameo who only showed up once in the game, every one of them are quite well-made. There's no such super cold and OP MC or ML, but both MC and ML are actually interesting. The MC is reckless because he's confident for his power, he's a demonic cultivator after all, lmao, and yet the MC is quite weak because even though he can fight ghost directly, the invisible rule in the game... more>> world can kill him and that's what he's been careful of. While the ML is really calm, but that's understandable after all he's already been through of 18 world and survived, he's calm and clever, very good at observing and using his mind to survive, but after all he's just a human, that's why he can't beat a ghost like MC. Both of them really are two peas in a pod, complimenting each other.

One more compliment, Until chapter 50 I can't figure out who was the Shou who was the Gong, lol. Even though the ML has been said to be a pretty guy, but he's also described as handsome and huge, a 1.85 m man. The MC is described as a handsome guy and is quite popular with girls. I like this kind of couple where it's not easy to judge who was the bottom, with how other novel author always wrote the bottom as either cool and cute, or cool and delicately pretty (lmao), while the top has always been described as masculine, handsome, OP, etc.

I can already give a 5 stars at how the author make her MC and ML, that's how desperate I am to find a BL novel where the bottom is not described as "cute/pretty/delicate/milky white skin/soft/adorable/"etc, hahha~ <<less

It's honestly quite mediocre and not really worth reading considering how many problems it has. The biggest dealbreaker (and why I dropped it) is transphobia. There's one trans side character (I think she appears in one of the first arcs and later around ch 110) that's treated horribly by the author. There's also one instance of real world police investigation where one of the characters is described as a feminine guy (in a negative way) and weird which also reeks of transphobia and h*mophobia. I'm actually quite surprised no one... more>> else seems to have criticised this part so far.

Seeing that all the reviews here (up to when I'm writing this) are pretty much 4-5 stars, I felt a bit reluctant to write this.

As you guys can tell from the genre, it's the kind of supernatural/horror survival game thingy. Except, the MC is (or was) a demonic cultivator-turned-policeman. It wasn't a bad read, to be honest. But I just had to point out some things that didn't sit quite right with me.

MC was a demonic cultivator, and he was somehow transmigrated back to the modern world with a survival... more>> game setting as an 'evil spirit' who occupies a policeman's body with the same name as him. Okay, a very interesting match-up between two identities. However, we were never told about MC's background as a demonic cultivator. We didn't know his past life, what he did, his skills, what his level of cultivation is... heck, I even forgot he was a demonic cultivator since the early arcs barely mentioned this and MC didn't do massive splashes as a demonic cultivator. And another thing is, he's too good at adapting to the modern world which to some point is understandable because his first life was a morally upright citizen. But, he has been a demonic cultivator for 100 years and possibly more, I doubt he'd adapt that quick after transmigrating back.

The story follows MC's journey both in the real world and the mission world. In the real world, MC solves mysteries as a policeman, and in the mission world solving mysteries to survive. While the mysteries are pretty intriguing and not too stretched out until dozens of chapters like other survival game-themed novels, I feel like they would've been better as a separate story. As in, the life of the demonic cultivator-turned-policeman in the real world as one story, and the demonic cultivator-scaring off-ghosts in the mission world as another. It might've worked better that way since having both is kind of overwhelming.

Haven't seen much chemistry going on between MC and (the supposed) ML. Yeah, their funny banters are interesting, but there has barely been a spark between them. In the early chapters, they're definitely more suited as friends who mock each other jokingly rather than a couple. But hey, I'm simply going to label this novel as a slow-burn romance. Maaaybe it'll happen later. Maybe. I kind of feel like MC is more suited with the origi- oops, that's gonna be a spoiler.

Besides those points, this isn't a bad read. The story behind the mission world arcs are pretty heartbreaking too ngl and I like how the author took inspiration from real-life tragedies to spread awareness on the corresponding issue. It wasn't scary to the point of pissing yourself, it'll left you feeling unsettled rather than scared. The mysteries also weren't too difficult so you can guess the truth along the way which is something that I'd like to do. Perfect if you want to read something not too heavy. <<less

It's not a bad read but I failed to see why it got so many 5 stars reviews.

Honestly, I'm quite bored and dropping it. I was looking forward to see a demonic cultivator MC, but there is nothing to see until now. Well he beats up ghosts, like in 90% of stories about horror games...

There are obvious plot holes, like how he occupies someone else's body, does someone else's job without any qualification but nobody notices it... Or how he doesn't actively research how he got where he is or... more>> things about his first life.

The horror worlds are really short but more about injustice than horror, like sad news articles you read and that make you curse the unfairness of the world. These stories got to me more than others of the same genre.

About the personalities of the MC and ML, it's fairly generic. ML is the quiet, mysterious, intelligent type. MC, well no idea to be honest, does he have a personality? More the brawn than the brain in the games, that's it. <<less

I was not a fan of this novel. I kept waiting for it to make sense and become clear, and it never really did. The author had to directly explain it as a note in the final chapter and it's still confusing. Also, the romance was non existent, then appeared out of thin air with no believable build up.

This is both a cop show and a survival horror show LOL oh and one cannot forget the fact that there’s transmigration/demonic cultivation going on in the bg. I found the read interesting and pretty fun at first, but I got bored of the instances and the mu*der-solving pretty quickly. Might be because I’ve been reading too many survival game novels and have become numb to it T.T I’ll definitely try to read this again later!

CHARACTERS:

The characters in this novel are... so-so in my eyes. I like their dynamics and... more>> the banter between the main pair is pretty cute, but their foundation is a bit shaky. Like they’re not necessarily OOC, they just seem almost indistinguishable.

Gu Xizhou (MC) : The demonic cultivator / transmigrator who was summoned into the body of another person with the same name. This person had just entered the horror survival game world and had been faced with death, though how he was able to call the MC is a mystery.

Si Yu (ML) : A brainy veteran of the games who works well with the MC’s no-fear methods. His personality has been mostly subdued. He’s cold most of the time but, in the inside, he’s quite kind.

OG!GX: The original owner of the body that the MC is possessing! There’s a lot of mystery behind him and how he was able to summon the MC.

Fang Zhi: The MC’s deputy (the MC is the captain of the police force), who ends up getting dragged into things.

ROMANCE:

Not sure about the romance because they hadn’t gotten together yet... but I do like the uniqueness in the main pair’s dynamics! The ML, the Gong, is often described as beautiful and delicate while solving mysteries while the MC, the Shou, has very brutish methods LOLOL

SETTING:

This is a modern world where the MC has to play the role of a policeman most of the days and then a player when his time (or the time of the ML and his teammate) runs out. The “time” in question is literally how much time he has left to live. All the players who join the survival horror game were actually supposed to die, and them joining in the game is their only way of extending their time to live.

The games themselves are definitely horror oriented, usually with moral themes attached to teach the players a lesson at the end. Horror value is not the highest but it can be pretty creepy!

PLOT:

The underlying plot has to do with the MC’s summoning and the true story beyond the survival horror game. The author had been sprinkling clues about it!

RATING:

Because I didn’t really get very far in the story; I can only give this a 3.5 out of 5, rounded off to four out of five. I had some fun reading it but maybe because nothing seemed to be happening for a while (outside of the instances) I got bored. It could also be because I stopped reading midway to do some work. Not sure! I’ll come back to reread in the future to check whether I like it better the second go around.

Oh, and I recommend this novel for those who want to read something horror/mystery oriented! The romance isn’t really the focus, and the survival game itself isn’t very complicated so there are no harsh game elements. It really is mostly about the horror stories told in the game and the mu*der mystery when the MC is working as a cop. <<less

OK, So I've seen a lot of comments comparing this story to "Kaleidoscope of Death", but the fact is the only thing this story has in common with "Kaleidoscope of Death" is that they have to go on a mission to prolong their lives, as for the point of the story and the plot itself is very different.

One of the most different crucial points between this story and "Kaleidoscope Of Death" is the instance world.

In "Kaleidoscope of Death" no matter how difficult the instance world is, there will definitely still... more>> be a chance to make it through even if it's only 0.1%.
While in this story there is a term called "Hitting the Wall" which means that maybe one day you will enter an instance world where the rules are absolute without any gap left to live (The only way to escape is either you are very lucky or you have high level props that can make u survive) this make the Instance world in this story is more deadly.
As for the plot execution, this story has a slightly poor plot execution (I just feel that the way the author completes each mission or plot is too clear (???), so sometimes it makes me feel a bit awkward or surprised when reading it like "That's it??? I-OK...")

But because the MC's background is a police officer, the plot itself is diverse and not only about the world of instances, this makes the execution of the story itself become less prominent.

As for the depiction of the characters, this story is clearly superior then "Kaleidoscope of Death".

The only character that I find a bit ambiguous is probably Yi Shu (ML) ??? Because in the synopsis he is said to be a Yandere (Yes he is) but that will not be reflected at all at the beginning of the story.

I don't know if it's because the author wanted to convey a mysterious feel or some kind of plot twist to Si Yu character, but how Yi Shu reversed his nature still feels weird for me... It's not because that Si Yu isn't portrayed as a cruel and cold character which suit with Yandere trait, it's just that the depiction of the character of Innocent and typical of ignorant teenagers at the beginning is really too thick, it's better if from the beginning the author sets Si Yu character like when the story has entered the middle of the story (at the middle of story Si Yu character is more stable, he can sometimes be mischievous and so on but that won't get to the point where he really looks like that... It's hard to explain but I'm sure you will understand and feel it once u reading the story).

So yeah I'm currently reading until chapter 144 and will continue the rest in raw.

Well it's all started with Gu Xizhou's first death... When he died someone was turned his femur into a dice, which was later used in a gambling house.

As time goes the dice suddenly changes, it's make everyone who touches it suddenly bound by a chain (this chain can also be referred as destiny which involves all aspects including life and death) and somehow as time goes everyone is also bound by those chains.

Not long time after the dice tied everyone with chains, Si Yu finally appeared... so you could say Si Yu was not a human but a spirit embodiment of the dice.

When Si Yu appeared he already can controlled destiny, and with that he also changed the world.

He made the worlds that can be coexist with ghosts, and he also severed the path of reincarnation so that when humans died they instantly turned into ghosts.

Well you could say the world has turned into a mission world, where ghosts who have doors can create their own area to take revenge.

This ended up wreaking havoc on the world, and all of these things were something that was certain in the future, which was seen by Fu Yiran who could see both the future and the past.

That's why Fu Yiran ended up stealing Si Yu dice, which unfortunately didn't change anything because without Si Yu permission, the only dice Fu Yiran could roll was only number 1, this means anything he wanted will never be granted.

So in the end God made a plan to resurrect Gu Xizhou through *squeaks* body (the real Gu Xizhou) and slowly lead him from a complicated time loop mission to resurrect him in his real body.

Unfortunately it's all failed because Gu Xizhou refused to life again... after that, god decided to turn Gu Xizhou into spirit which same as Si Yu by breaking the chains that he had.

The reason why the god wanted to make Gu Xizhou live with Si Yu was because god wanted Gu Xizhou to control Si Yu so that he didn't create the world that Fu Yiran saw in the future.

(The reason why god wanted to turn back time so that Gu Xizhou wouldn't die is because if not die the dice will also wouldn't be created.

While the reason why he didn't immediately bring Gu Xizhou back to life directly was because there is a rule that the dead could not come back to life, and that was the reason why he can't suddenly life again.)

I hope with this short conclusion you guys can understand the meaning of the ending... after all this story is indeed amazing.

Although, it cannot be denied that the execution of the story is sometimes lacking... I'm not even satisfied with the execution of the ending. <<less

A very Rare and Awesome Survival Horror Game Novel where the story was Combination of Survival Game and Detective Works that is SEPARATED from Each Moments. What I mean is, our MC is in a Body of a Police, so when he was back to Real World, he's doing his Job as a Police, aka Solving Crime and Catching Criminals. While in the Survival Game, he don't do the Brain Work. Lol

This the Story where the Gong ML is the Brain while the Shou MC is the Brawn! Their Interaction... more>> is Pretty Funny! MC is Super Shameless, but ML can be Shameless too. Lol

The Survival Game theme was kinda like KoD:

    • Inside game, their appearance changed (sometimes?)
    • Using Fake Names in Game
    • Finishing Game equal Staying Alive Longer in Real Life
    • You know your time to go inside the Game of your Level
That's it. The whole story plot, flows, characters, are all different. Nothing intense so far. But Still has lot of mysteries.

MC is Strong but is Very Restricted by some force he doesn't know. So he can't do much except Beating Ghost. Lol

Anyway, this is Absolutely Great Rare Novel and I pray soooo hard the rest of the story is Satisfying!!! Updates on 14th October 2022:

I can't say I was disappointed because it's anything but disappointing! But it wasn't so Spectacular whatsoever.

It was still Pretty Interesting and Absolutely Entertaining nevertheless. The Climax of the story was pretty good too! Written pretty well.

What a whirlwind... but I did enjoy the steamy kisses hehe

I think there’s a lot of good reasons to enjoy this novel. If you like mu*der mysteries in general, this is probably your cuppa. If you don’t then... you might have read the wrong tags. The whole time, I’ve been trying to think of what to compare it to since it does hold a lot of similar qualities to novels in its subgenre. There’s a lot of mysteries unraveling both in the mission world & in reality since MC is... more>> a cop. I want to say that some of the stories can be heartbreaking, especially when you consider that there are similar incidences that happen in the real world. The plot... is crazy confusing at times. Scratch that—most times. But I’ll take a happy ending any day.

The main CP is *chef’s kisses*. I did enjoy the pacing, it was a good ol’ slowburn. But oh boy once ML confirmed his feelings, I was on fire. The heat was ON. No smut cuz life hates us : (

I’d say, just TRY IT OUT! Take a crack at reading novel. It’s not unpalatable, but it’s definitely not the “best thing ever”. It’s just a fun spooky read if you have time to kill. <<less

I just love this story. Kinda got a alternate world survival game going on, but the mix between real life and the games are great.

... more>> Both the games and real life stories are interesting. The mystery for both parts, the power of our MC's demonic cultivation and the questions as to why it doesn't work right in those game/mission worlds. Throughout the story we learn more about MC and ML through MC's limited POV.

Their interactions both irl and in the game worlds literally crack me up. One moment I'm wondering how this person died and the next I'm facepalming at their interactions. There are so many things you want to find out, but we have to learn along with MC! Every chapter leaves me on edge wanting to know more!

If you like to focus more on the experiences that builds up the mystery, BL, and world, then this is for you.

3/29/2023 Update: Ch 165 Rating: 3.5/5 -

So I did stop reading the novel on ch 76 back then and recently picked up where I left off. The reason why I stopped was because the constant switch between reality and mission worlds was very jarring as there was no rest/change in pacing between every story. I started dreading MC's return for reality because it felt like plot would never develop except in the mission world, and with every switch between each lasting around 6-10 chapters, I wasn't enjoying the filler IRL stories. Towards the ch 80s plot started picking up in reality, I did enjoy every story told but it did take a long time to for plot/relationship to develop (plot picking up more in the 100s and 130s and now 160s) and for MC's background to be questioned.

Update TLDR: 3/29/2023 Rating 3.5/5-

I felt like the author could have done a bit better with pacing between the switch between IRL and Mission worlds but the plot/relationship started to even out after ch 80s and the earlier placed hints are finally being addressed in the later ch 100s, ch 130s, and ch 160s. I speadrun the IRL world stories but live for those tiny hints scattered IRL and major discoveries in Mission world and later in IRL world. <<less

I love it but the ending had a few shortcomings.

To start of, I've been more invested in mystery novels, and reading this one has been a wild ride for me, the characters appear to have their own unique qualities which I really like and the story isn't always what it seems to be like what I first thought of.

Throughout the novel, the pace has always been slow and steady which I really like, and I was really impressed cause at first I thought the author left a lot of plot... more>> points hanging but as I read it again for the second I started to notice that it was there all along. (Though author-san left some plot points that I still question to this day, but some question can be left unanswered right ?)

Most importantly, I love how the ending went, its bitter sweet actually, my main cp is still together and everyone got a happily ever after but I kind of wish there was still more that could have been explored. <<less

I feel like there was simply too much exposition and not enough action at the end, like the author was sick of writing the story and wanted to finish up quickly. 1) I thought the reveal of the ML being a supernatural creature/a new “god” wasn’t seeded well and also was quite a boring choice. It cheapened things for me.

2) Not as yandere on screen as I wanted : (He never went crazy on screen which I felt like should’ve happened if you’re setting him up as territorial and possessive.

I think the fake transmigration was really interesting and DID have some foreshadowing, but on the other hand nothing really quite explained the powers he had? I guess because he’s the only one who can kill the ML he can also harm the ML’s creations????? Also it felt like the author decided to make him a cop in his original life midway through the book, even if he was a regular officer and not a detective, he should have had some memories of high school math and police procedure from his original life. Both of these were things he had zero concept of in the first puzzle and first real world arcs. So I was sitting there like, author-dada this feels like you messed up your own book...

What an amazing story! Some people say the ending is rushed, and I do wish the author had written a couple more extras, but I actually loved the ending. It was probably the one place that the main characters were so sugary sweet and unrestrained together, so I had to enjoy it while it lasted! And I love a good twist and tie together. Especially with the help of the translated comment, everything ends up very logical and makes sense.

I originally thought the twist would be more heart rendering (someone... more>> mentioned self-cest and I have to say, I was expecting something along that line, or evil organ boss takes over one of his victims), but the real twist is much sweeter.

There are definitely holes and unexplained threads, but overall, I loved what the author eventually came up with.

I also love the equality of the two characters. They're both pretty boss and the worlds they go through are immensely interesting. It's so cool how the author manages to create arcs that show how nuanced a situation can be. Every time justice is served in the supernatural world, it's so satisfying. The real life justice in the police station is almost more heart-rendering. You see how the system provides a series of laws that maintain order, the criminal isn't always wrong and the victim isn't always pitiful. But that's sort of one of the themes of this story. The law might not be fair, it might incriminate people who have done things that are legally wrong but morally right, but the alternative is chaos. You might pray to God that real justice be served, but maybe God is restricted to only allow what is possible through people's actions through their own free will. <<less

This story is hilarious, and as a scaredy-cat myself, the horror scenes aren't too much for me to handle. I love MC, he's just funny, shameless, and badass at times.
