To be good, or to be evil.

Just what is…the highest order of weapon that humanity has?

After a great catastrophe struck, the world was set back many years and humanity started living in anarchy.

With time, society started building up again and people were now living in walled strongholds and fringe towns across the land.

Humans have also become distrustful and ruthless in an unforgiving society where the strong survive and the weak are eliminated.

I definitely disagree with the evil protagonist tag, I'd say he's good or at least neutral. He just understands reality, so he does let unrelated people die and what not.

Most of the story is really good, post-apocalypse with some magic. Everyone has their own realistic motivations, and there aren't really any pure mindless villains (aside from low level tr*sh).

The only problems are inconsistencies and how slow the romance is imo. It's not constant, but there are multiple times where you go "wait, that's not how that worked" or "wtf happened... more>> to x?" Most of them aren't major, but there are a couple relatively big ones that make it a hard choice between 4 and 5.

The romance is pretty good overall, just way too slow. Like seriously: they acknowledge their relationship, abandon some important stuff for each other, even live together for a while... but all the most they do is hug in over 1k chapters???

Overall though, I highly recommend it if you like post-apocalyptic stuff with magic. Character motivations are all relatively deep and realistic, and it's generally pretty funny but with emotional moments. The ending does feel a bit rushed looking back, but some character sacrifices did get a tear. <<less

The MC isn't terribly overpowered, but his power is definitely very versatile with his system.

Really fun to read his adventure through the wasteland.

I don't understand how ppl are saying MC is naive, like how? He's literally the smart and cunning type in this novel

Edit: Finished this an while ago, and I would like some more to the story. Felt the story was still a bit unfinished, hopefully we see them (MC + FMC) in the sequel one.

This is a good read. Can't say a masterpiece but it's a good one. The action and adventure are good. Interestingly the romance is good, the MCs are devoted to eachother, no harem. Apocalyptic world with decent plot, devoted love are some of the rare thins to come by. To enjoy this you should not dwell deep into the philosophy, it's a Chinese novel so their philosophy bound to appera here, but the author done a good job reducing it. The brotherhood is also executed nicely. Even the overbearing female... more>> characters are bearable. A good read. Some arcs are not up to the mark, so if you lose interest then just skim through it to just gather the information. It's a 4 out of 5 star novel, I've given 5 stars to negate the underrated treatment. <<less

I think this novel is really excellent. The characters, the world, the events and the story, it is truly excellent.

I started this novel because I thought the story was interesting, and now I'm really happy to have started it.

The course of the story, the way it was written, the importance given to the side characters, the development of MC, everything was really enjoyable.

It saddens me so much to know that this novel has ended. And I'm getting closer and closer to the end of the novel. I only have this... more>> novel on my mind these days, and I feel so bad when I remember that I'm getting close to the end.

even if the fact that the novel is ending saddens me. A big thank you to the author of The First Order for making me feel so many emotions while reading this novel.

I'm nearing the end of a really big adventure, I hope the ending doesn't change my mind about the novel.

Again, I would like to thank the author of The First Order for giving me this beautiful adventure. <<less

I am here after reading Night's Nomenclature (and am waiting for the updates) since it was mentioned from the start of that novel that "The First Order" is actually a prequel of it.

I've read quite a few reviews and I learned from them that Ren Xiaosu actually has a system!?

Here's some glimpse of what I know according to the historical records in the other novel, "Night's Nomenclature":

Spoiler

From the history recorded in "Night's Nomenclature", irrc Ren Xiaosu became first experimental subject of a certain organization of researchers that researches about extraordinary humans. (They tried to make humans coexist with cancer cells). Apparently, their research turned Ren Xiaosu and another human (I don't remember who) into a God, but in the midsts of their research they discovered that they only succeed accidentally because Ren Xiaosu was different from the other test subjects. So these researchers changed their research direction, and used Ren Xiaosu's blood (a blood of a God) to create stronger humans or creatures (?) and some medicine that improves the Humans' genes that creates stronger humans.

(This last info is not in historical records, but Qing Chen discovered it from one of the organization's hidden research facilities)
In the end, this organization got destroyed from unknown reasons and one of their experimental subject is actually at large (this subject has long lifespan, can create puppets, and is causing havoc at present in the novel "Night's Nomenclature")

[collapse]

TBH, I am quite disappointed to know that Ren Xiaosu actually has a system. But meh, I just want to know what happened at that time. Although I have some bad experiences for romantic sub-plot and I can't help but cringe everytime they appear in a non-romance genre novel, I will still try it! 🤞 <<less

Good. Hilarious Apocalypse Romp with a System.

Read if you like humor.

Read if you like a straight up a VERY literal System.

Read if you like action.

Read if you think MC should be DEADLY funny serious.

Read if you like the apocalypse and wonder if humanity can really survive if everyone is so serious. "Why so serious?"

I chuckled more than I swore in anger with this series. Give it a read, you may too.

The start isn't bad but as it progressed I felt I lost interest in it.

I think part of the problem is that the MC eventually becomes so powerful that he can literally brute force all his problems when initially MC had to rely on his wits to survive. This means there's literally no suspense and at some point halfway through the novel can literally singlehandedly destroy armies that gets dull. At around that time author then transitions towards an empire building arc of sorts where you get factional wars and... more>> various characters are randomly killed off.

Ending wasn't really great and there wasn't any epilogue so all you really get is a last battle that was probably won. At the end of it I got more feeling that most wars are pointless and lead to massive needless losses for marginal gains that probably isn't what author was aiming for when pitching a battle with humanity's survival at stake. <<less

I have to say that this author is an idiot, he loves to say that the MC is neither good or bad but that is a lie, he is evil. You don't have to do evil to be a bad guy, just looking at someone doing evil and even though you have the ability to help you choose to ignore it means you are evil.

But let's ignore that, what irritated me most reading this is seeing him becoming friends and even getting into relationships with people who put his life... more>> at risk. He was forced to take a group of people to a very dangerous place, a place where only 4 of the 20 people survived, that thing is reason enough for him to want to kill these people, but after that he doesn't care about this.

During the escape and going to fortress 109 he had the best opportunity to earn the thanks of thousands of people but he decides to stay quiet and not actively help anyone. He was supposed to get stronger by doing kindness but this author simply didn't know what he was doing creating this system, this system is confusing, it simply gives missions at random times and when there is a good opportunity to give missions to the MC it stays silent. I thought I would see someone evil doing kindness even if it was to get stronger and that would be funnier than this author's humor... <<less

First of all, I just want to say that I absolutely LOVE this author. *Cough* an old fan*cough*

In most of his books the MC always have a system. But this is not a heavy system-leveling, faceslapping novel where the protagonist slaughters everyone in their way. On the contrary, this novel is more focused on philosophy and the choices people make to survive in the apocalypse.

The MC is a shameless and surprisingly compassionate person who would've survived well in any environment. Although many of his party mates were useless in battle,... more>> he ultimately still decides to take them along providing protection and teaching survival skills. Of course, this doesn't mean he's a saint since there are many scenes that proved him capable of killing innocent (?) souls.
Spoiler

One of his highlights is when he told his brother:"Don't let the world's despair become your despair".

[collapse]

The characterization is also good. Other than the MC, every character that matters has their own personality, goals, and values. In fact, the author himself said that when he was planning this novel, he was originally going to use one of the supporting characters as the main character but then changed it to the current version due to it being too similar to Spare Me, Great Lord!

I think the most impressive part is the world building though. Many times when a writer tries to incorporate too many elements they end up making a fishnet novel with a lot of plot holes and settings that just doesn't make sense. But this novel did a pretty good job of giving reasons and dropping foreshadowing hints every few chapters. It helps that the readers get to observe this world through MC's lens since he is rather ignorant (in the beginning of the novel at least) and is very suspicious of everything.

There's many other things to like about this novel such as the comedy, the factions portraying different views on how to save the world/humanity, the romance, etc. The only two things that annoys me is that the novel is a long one (I'm a slow reader) and the ending.

All in all, if you'd like to find another reason to live and are on the sentimental side of the spectrum I think this novel would be a good fit. <<less

I'm not harsh enough to rate it 2 or 1. Overall it's interesting read with comprehensive story and detailed characters. The people aren't waste characters, they're kept relevant throughout the story and build relationships in complex world.

Idk what sort of amazing stories people read that can say this is tr*sh, because it's not even close. The ending is most definitely upsetting, but I'm upset by 90% of endings so whatever. A great many times during the last 10% of the novel I was frustrated with poorly thought plot or solutions.

Overall... more>> 3 stars, but if I exclude the last 150 chapters. I'd say 4 stars. <<less

Read it weeks ago and my initial impression was that the novel seemed to be an improvement from his previous works. The post-apocalypse universe was interesting and the characters in general were not overly OP. FMC and side characters had sufficient development too. While the ending could have been better, I felt that the novel was not a bad read.

This isn’t the typical novel that I complete, but I did and enjoyed it. It’s very character driven and the main character’s humorous problem solving and adventures kept me entertained and reading until the end. On the other hand, the story is very unfocused and has inconsistent pacing, but they’re not a problem since you’re reading for the adventures anyways.

It's pretty good book overall. There's this slight feeling that the author has yet to master inventing "humans" from the point of view of the characters actions/rationalizations but I'm not going to delve any deeper into that this time.

The ideas are pretty fresh and plot is just wacky weird but quite enjoyable.

What stands out the most for me in this book is that the tragedies truly shape it. If you're one of those readers like me who puts yourself into the characters positions and sometimes stops to think about how... more>> would things be.. Well you're in for a sad ride. It's pretty depressing and dark world in this book.

There's nowhere near as much comedy and joy sparking nice moments as there was in authors previous work "Spare Me, Great Lord!". In this story sh*t gets much realer and its somewhat infectious to the reader. I'm not saying I'm bummed out or anything but I do feel like taking a walk in the dark while smoking a cig. That kind of thing. <<less

I really enjoyed reading this novel for now.

If you've already read "Spare me great lord!" you'll find a lot of similar plot settings, but in "The First Order", the world construction and secondaries characters are much more interesting, detailed and as clever as the MC for most of them, and that makes a huge difference. The MC is also not that OP, as he is almost killed several times, and his golden finger is more interesting and explained compared to "Spare me great lord!".

I was also surprised by what happens... more>> in the second half as the story line becomes much more dramatic/serious: you will see the MC evolving from a silly and funny character to someone filled by revenge and with a clear purpose. <<less
