Notice all the 5 star reviews are only for early chapters. I think the reviewers need to come back and update.

Our MC is a orphan peasant that joins a sorcerer school after being tested. Of course, he eventually becomes stronger and goes off researching stuff to rise up in a sorcerer's world. He finds out this world has may kinds of sorcerers and one of the things they do is go out conquering worlds for their resources.

Now the reason I rated this novel as average is because I couldn't relate... more>> to the MC and he could live or die and would probably not affect the novel at all. The novel was also not funny, scary, exciting, or entertaining - it is very bland to me. It was kind of like reading the life of an uninteresting person through their diary.

The early chapters were actually quite good but once it reached around 140's, it took a steep nose dive. Years and decades would pass and all the MC has been doing is researching stuff. His first world exploration is extremely drawn out with, once again, uninteresting fights and research. I think It's been close to 100 chapters and the conquest is still not over for that first world. The author also throws in lots of made up names and terms so as you keep reading, you eventually come to a WTF moment where you have no clue what the novel is talking about anymore.

I say give this novel a try, but I'm going to be shelving this for now. <<less

There is two issue with the fic. One the author has multiple time skips and two, the author doesn't explain anything in great detail other than the numerous battle scenes.

This makes the fic a chore to read later on, but it does have a change of pace between world invasion arcs. Having our MC be a professor, mayor of a town and being there when his friends pass away in old age.

These things give a more realistic take on the wizard world, but there is a lot of clichés. Including,... more>> arrogant copy paste fodder, our MC always being right and the plot armor being directly addressed, which is later used as an excuse for his sudden power creep.

Also, it takes about 150 chapters for him to be a wizard rank 1 and an additional 450 to become a stage two wizard. This means alot of the fic over explains the battles while leaving out key development in his powers. Using time skips similar to: a whole hourglass later, a dozen hour glasses, 2 years, 200 years and anything else in between. Apparently the author believes if enough time passes our MC will auto solve all his problems. Which makes me salty that such a key thing such as researching/experimenting was avoided in order to make room for the Shonen type battles.

As of now the fic has 643 chapters translated. Giving us the most recent arcs being a crap arc about the nightmare realm, a crap arc about purple rocks/demon blood and a cool arc of him returning and helping his teacher fight off an invading academy. Overall expect the author to strike out more than he succeeds in this fic. However, the arcs that are done good are worth it over the general mediocry of the fic. <<less

I have read lots of CN webnovel since 2014, and this is among the best, the same tier as record of mortal journey to immortality.

Good start, exciting ability development, expansive world building, exciting journey, struggles and the taste of success, interesting side characters and adversary, all are here. This is just good. A little bit of ramance is also there.

The only thing that are lacking is emotional development, there are some, but not as determining as Renegade immortal. And also, the end is a bit difficult to follow, because of... more>> the bad machine translation :)

Aside from that, this is a must read. <<less

Yeah 70 chapters doesn't say much, but I really felt conflicted that a story which had all aspects to be great turned out to be so disappointing.

Amateur writing, amateur understanding of the world and people. There's no show, only tells... "Drinking water will fill me with water that is actually H20 which is known to be very abundant in this world, so drinking this is very good cause the body needs it" actually this makes more sense then some lines in the book.

Our MC Glenn reads more like a string... more>> puppet with no natural transitioning emotions or reactions, example: He was sneering and laughing at a jealous guy but then the next moment he's described with poker face and mystery who is not fazed like a young blooded newb.

Even his actions have no head or tails, he gets up to go buy grapes but inbetween he sees an open door and marches into it like his whole life was just for that moment.

Childish interactions, not just the kids but the adults too lack a certain maturity and they are too forcefully or bluntly painted as "old Gramps waiting to give treasures and powers" they don't have their individuality at all.

MC very quickly takes on this arrogance of sorcerer's supremacy, he's pompous and reckless.... for a logic and experiments driven civilization, he is just too conceited.

Did I mention there are a lot of repetitions of paragraphs and even chapters that are just repeated? Author forgets something in the previous chapter, he rewrites that exact scenes in the next chapter..

Ex- ch1 Adam picked the apple not eve, so humanity was not sinned.

Ch2 - Eve picked the apple so humanity was sinned.

I mean mf wt?

The overarching plot isn't anything orginal or grand, there's actually nothing orginal at all. The world building or the build up of mystery is crap, no consistency, you can't imagine any scenes before it's just phases to another foreign place... there's no grounded imagery and mapping of the world so we can perceive the depths.

It's written like the world just woke up around the MC and there was no life before his arrival, everywhere he goes is a totally unexplored treasure hunt that needs MC to only think how "the previous time it was weak, now I'll try it stronger".

He's own sorcerery path is so Deus ex and broken... and how did he do it? Nope no hurdles no innovative thinking that no centuries long sorcerers couldn't have already did. He finds them mutating so it must be origin of life itself. Like sike! His experiments are looking through microscope and dissecting frogs and apes. I mean really? You think in the millennium of sorcerer's history not one single pleb has tried using gadflies such common flies that even a poor beggar bloke MC could get his hands on, like that?

Like I said, no creativity just spontaneous flamboyant thoughts written in halfassed way. <<less

I will give this novel 1/5 stars. This novel starts out as a tropey magical fantasy story. You got your protagonist with magical potential, heading off to a magical school to study magic, and you have various dangers and adventures he meets along the way. Aside from the basic premise, this novel does absolutely nothing well and I only rate it as one star instead of zero stars because the author tried to create something unique, emphasis on tried.

In a sense, the author tried to create something from scratch, not... more>> following the tried and true and tired cliche plot lines of chinese webnovels, aka young masters and face slappings. But their writing skill is simply really really bad and incapable of stringing together a coherent story.

The world? Boring middle ages european style with nothing unique at all.

The magic system? Not explained, nonsensical, just ideas slapped onto the page.

The characters? Uninspired, too many pointless characters pop out one after another.

The plot? There literally is none, just the main character on a journey to become a mage.

The author would have served himself better plagiarizing Harry Potter, they would have learned more about writing a proper story that way. <<less

I really love the world the novel is set in. Its a very realistic world with a history that actually makes sense and is coherent. The characters are not idiots and are pretty realistic and act like a normal human would. None of that hero demon king bs which actually makes no sense. I also like that there isnt a reincarnated protagonist which would just ruin the plot. The protagonist while not that interesting, I like him. Not unreasonably superpowered. His character progression actually makes sense for once, that shift... more>> from an intelligent but naive boy to a man who is cold yet not unfeeling. I really like that once humans arent completely ret*rded and there is none of that arrogant young master bs after a certain point because progression using heritage isnt possible in this world and people have to acquire knowledge to become more powerful which acts in its favour because a powerful person is usually an intelligent person and once MC steps into those ranks all the characters are rational and dont kill people just because they looked at them funny. <<less

This is a WMW-wanna-be. It is supposed to be a knowledge and ruthlessness-jerker, but it is quite a spectacular fail because:

  1. The author just repeats obsessively the saying "give me a fulcrum and I shall move the world blahblah" and throws around sciency words, but is comes out cringy and awkward. It is like other novels but instead of comprehending and deducing techniques and dao, here it is called scientific discovery and knowledge.
  2. MC is supposedly focused on gaining power but still cares about looks. Also he becomes c*cky/arrogant very soon after he gains a tiny bit of power relying on a lucky discovery that brought him money and thus powerful equipment.
Biggest downside is the vermenous romance which creeps me out. It like the girl suddenly becomes a yandare for... more>> him, he accepts it like it's normal, but still ignores her voluntatily and only sees her one a year... hard to explain but full awkwardness.

Plot is very fast, maybe so fast that backgroung world details are glanced over too quickly and the characters are jsut basic models for their roles (most insipid master ever), zero touch on personality and motivations. Also, the MC has it very easy getting stronger with seemingly no effort or outstanding talent. The plot ideas are varied let's say, but far from well exploited, nothing new you didn't read elsewhere. <<less

ive read all the translated bits and so far it’s my favourite novel so far.

I have read many novels over the course of the years of reading novels on novel updates, but this one is so unique and interesting. I literally created this account to write this review because this novel deserves it.

honestly like one of the other people reviewed all the right itches are scratched, character isn’t OP, not a genius and learns everything at the beginning, the character continuously learns and is perfectly paced in my opinion.

if you’d... more>> like a good read this is definitely a good choice. <<less

If you stumbled upon this novel because of people recommending it off of WMW, then perhaps you should actually give it a try. The MC has the same kind of alignment as Leylin would, as in that he places higher power as his goal, and killing people is definitely something he is willing to do. Even so, he is definitely a lot more emotional and less calculative than Leylin would be.

One thing that you want to keep note of is that this novel, in my opinion, is definitely worse than... more>> WMW. The "romance" is actually just as bad or worse than it is in WMW, and a lot of things are incoherent and incongruous. I don't think it is the translation, as there are just many parts of the plot where the author barely mentions or just skips it over, to only just be talking about it 20 chapters later.
Spoiler

For example. the daughter of the son telling MC about a lot of things...I never read this, but apparently she explained them to MC, and it gets mentioned a lot of times

[collapse]

Another thing. People who say that this novel is better because it does not use the AI chip trope. WRONG. Instead of author writing down: "AI chip, analyze the life matrix of my body, " the author writes down "[an amount of time] has passed, " and MC miraculously makes a breakthrough in his research.

OVERALL: Decent read, but definitely a grade worse than WMW, and not a masterpiece. Would I recommend it? Yeah, but just barely. <<less

I like the story and it's an interesting read, but in the end it failed to get me hooked on it. I give it 3 stars because even if a novel is good if it doesn't captivate the audience it has failed in some way. Note this novel has a western feel similar to wmw

MC goes to magic school, Harry Potter style. Students kill each other, great!

Nothing makes sense though. MC keeps using abilities that weren't mentioned before, we don't know where/how he picked them up. Nothing is explained, infodumps in footnotes,...

Terrible writing, quite unreadable.

First of all, the TL on aggregators for this is dogshit. Go straight to MTL (I recommend novelhi), the main TL is unreadable and skips like half of each chapter so you have no idea what's going on. The terrible writing in other reviews is mostly because of that.

The story itself is very well-written, albeit a bit dry (and some things are definitely stretched). It's a magus society that's actually pretty united and functional (because they have strong external enemies), which is the first time I've seen it. Basic humans... more>> are still ants and what not, but overall they try to take care of them.

The MC is definitely not as evil as most in the genre (abhors human experimentation and those who do it), but still definitely evil (literally anything else, including humans born in other planes? s*avery and experiment time! Occasional genocide too). I would say that's just the world, but he makes a peasant feed MC the peasant's pet cat...

The world-building is really good, and despite not liking the direction it takes at the end, it's by far the best of the type I've seen. I only noticed two minor plot holes in over 1700 chapters, which is insanely good. The long time-scale thing is also done the best out of all I've read, with it slowly changing personalities instead of just being ignored. Sorcerers are basically considered children until they watch most of their childhood friends die of old age.

The reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5 (and dropping here) is for a few reasons: things definitely drag a bit; the romance is... not the worst, but still a minus; there's some time shenanigans (better than most, but I hate pretty much any of that) ; and finally, I just dislike this type of ending direction.

TLDR: Definitely read this if you like relatively slow-paced stories where the MC feels like he earns all his powers, but make sure to avoid the garbage TL. <<less

Half way done with the novel, not too much complaint about it except one point.

Almost every time the author mention MC, he will describe him as mysterious, knowledgeable, full of wisdom, how his eyes has seen through everything, how just by being around him can bring happiness, how dependable he is.

Not sure if the author is trying to describe himself or jerking the MC off, but it is very annoying to me. It's like 90% of the time.

Author shouldn't write romantic relationships. He's really bad at it. Rest of the stuff is fine. Big translation mess up or author screw up around chapter 47-50. Like he skips a chapter or summaries one, it's confusing as a reader.

The story itself is interesting as the author introduced a fascinating and in a certain sense kinda morally ugly world. The sorcercy itself is kinda old-school which makes it interesting and refreshing to read. Characters are not bad, though they are not that greatly developed.

What is the main bummer here is.. Pacing. For some reason every arc feels rushed. Seems kinda opposite to dragged down story, but here you have no time to savour the arcs at all - as soon as you feel that "it is really interesting and... more>> I wonder how it will end" it concludes. Which leaves some awkward feeling and sigh. <<less
