Growth cheats? Infinite magic power? The ability to utilize all archetypes? What’s the point if instant death ends everything with a single attack?

High school senior Yogiri Takatou was on a school field trip when he woke up to a dragon assaulting his sightseeing bus, with the only ones still on the bus being him and his female classmate, the panicking Tomochika Dannoura. Apparently the rest of his classmates had been given special powers by Sion, a woman who introduced herself as Sage, and escaped from the dragon, leaving those that hadn’t received any special powers behind as dragon bait.

And so Yogiri was thrown into a parallel universe full of danger, with no idea of what just happened. Likewise, Sion had no way of knowing just what kind of being she had summoned to her world.

Status: v4 light novel
You can click on spoiler for a little bit spoil about what you need to expect specifically, or just read the Italic text.

First, I recommend you guys try then buy the light novel version on Amazon instead reading webnovel. The writing is extremely well and there is more backstory that helps you understand what is happening in the main story. Then, keep in mind that this series is written an anti-cliche style, which means if you love to read light-hearted ones or absurdly OP ones, stay back from this. On... more>> the other hand, the webnovel's translation is ruined with broken English.

Second, the story is used to mock other Isekai novels that are too cheat, too forgiving for the protagonist. The main focus of the story is used to discover the potential of each cheat ability, brutal scenes, and dark comedy.

Spoiler

Ghost-related ability can be used to manipulate electricity and waves, instant death can be countered with substitutes or magical barriers, the duplicate-yourself ability can be used to make split-personality minds, etc.

[collapse]

Third, here is a basic summary of the novel.

World: a battle-junkie world, like the ones from VRRPG novels, but this world is more brutal. Here, Isekai protagonists from other novels battle to the death to see which cheat ability is the strongest. In here, each character bends the rule of the world based on what they believe (like the story from the same universe), so get ready for some absurd shits.

Spoiler

Shion from those lvl 999 novels, the fat pig comes from OP healer novels that swear revenge, etc. The organizations are SCP that contains supernatural beings like MC, angels from CLAMP's works, or protagonists from K: returning of kings novel.

[collapse]

Characters: Think about plot armor and deus-ex-machina, our MC is a counter for those things. Other characters are not mono-tone and fun to read, but due to poor writing and the story's brutal characteristic, most of them are background assets.

Spoiler

Most characters have OP abilities just to die under MC's power. Tomochika and the vampire sage have a good personality, but poor writing and slow development make them hard to read in the first 2 ones. Those will be better in later volumes.

[collapse]

Rational: absurd to the max. You have to prepare yourself because this author likes to throw random things left and right, and you won't know what will happen next.

Spoiler

At the end of volume 2, the protagonists know they need the energy and location of the world they need to return. Only at the end of volume 4 that they acquire it, and boom, they have both location and 2/3 of energy needed for the return.

[collapse]

Finally, just think the story light this. Mob 100 is OP, but the story is about he doesn't want that and try to become what he wants. Saitama is OP, but the story is about the interactions of other people around him, and he is just a symbol. Instant death's MC is OP, but he is a walking bomb so the story is about no matter how good, how much improvement you have, there is always someone better than you, which leads to the point that sometimes you should stop chasing your ideals and try to adapt to the environment. Also, OP Isekai is s*upid.

Spoiler

Volume 3 and 4 establish the abandonment of self to improve, to become number one, or to revenge, just to lose to instant death ability. Tomochika and MC's nanny understand her inability to do anything so she tries to get along with MC and then have a good relationship with him. On the other hand, the researchers are afraid of him and just want to save themselves so they don't have a good ending.

[collapse]

How to read this correctly? Count how many characters from other novels. The story's universe is a crossover universe, anyway. <<less

okay, dropped. This novel is really confusing for me that it gives a doubt of whether the author is focusing the MC or not.

the first problem :the author were putting so much mix elements that the story becomes jumbled to the point that it does not give a clear path of where the story goes. The story were mixed with element of fantasy, a little bit of futuristic technology and other isekai/tensei that being mixed into a single novel.

Then the second problem : there are 3 MCs in the story,... more>> could you believe that ? If I could give a simple an description of those 3 MC's : the first main MC that could use his Instant death, second MC is the heroine of the story where she have a talent of martial art power due her family bloodline (based on her character & personality settings by the author, her value goes to an average person) and third MC is the girl that supposed to be dead during the bus incident but suddenly she was revived by a futuristic machine which she not known about and her new goal is to get revenge on her classmates (MC isekai revenge type).

The third problem : The author keep sudden change of views of many people at the same times in some chapters.

The last problem is that there a mixed people who have been to another world before the bus incident happen. The author describe and present it to the reader that they have their previous cheat abilities and their personality. Which giving us question of why those type of people is appearing in the story while it was supposed to be the MC with instant death skills.

Anyway, sadly 2 stars for this novel <<less

One-trick pony parody series that's hard out on the tropes and lays them on with a severe level of irony. Isekai made for people that hate isekai.

It's fun and dumb and the biggest issue I have with it is that the translators have been taking months between chapters.

Apparently, BitterCoffee's review is quite misleading. MC couldn't feel the dragon at the beginning because the dragon was h**ny and not really releasing killing intent, and the dude he said that the level was at 10k was summoned before as a hero and was returned to Japan, basically it's that dude's second time in that world so his level was really high in the beginning. And the max level of normal humans was 99 not 20. Do not believe his review as it seems he just skimmed through chapters and... more>> not really paid any attention to details.

Do not review shit, if you can't even pickup details that are laid f*cking bare. <<less

This novel is a hidden gem. Both male and female leads are funny and likeable. The other characters have such ridiculous behaviors that it makes the main leads be the ones with the normal mind-set. The plot is entertaining although twisted. A must read for those who like anti-hero protagonists with a comedic undertone kinda story.

At the start I wasn't convinced..

but then it happened; unexpected plot twist, and it happened again!; what the MC did to this world DID MATTER and his actions both make the world MORE INTERESTING and ever penetrate the underlaying plot world, the story that messes with what's truly interesting in the novel!

This guy definetly doesn't saves plot action until marriage.

... more>> The sanctuary of apologetic Japanese or the other nihilistic contradictorial not-even-worth-mentioning mcs... MC is a Guy that completes the abstraction of what is happening to him and makes the result interesting.

depicting an extraordinary and colorful explosive plot ability this novel is made with the best of the author Independent creative ability.

Like going to school and meeting a boy whom maybe at first glance I wouldn't regard very highly but then he proceeds to show how extraordinarily takes he has to make this isekai novel. interesting and a joy to read.

He is the kind of person that reminds me, there's is people who doesn't give up in making something interesting of their lives.

This author wins my full admiration for his way of showing me that things can be made this way.

-I'm very happy to have found this novel, a Novel where MC actions matters in such unexpected ways -.

The worth of this novel is not that things could happen, but that they actually happen.

This story is truly believable, the way the story goes is rational, the Characters are well characterized and it gets better as it progresses.

The comedy element is well placed, it is not an end in itself, but a cool companion trough the journey.

This novel was unexpected. Just what I was looking for; not giving up on isekai novels payd well.

Because this is isekai done well and also a very interesting novel.

Personally, I didn't expect to be this immersed after my initial encounter with anime in middle School; they joy I felt is like the first time I saw dragon Ball on TV.

reading this novel feels like I'm experiencing a uniquely creative, independent and intriguing world again after so much time.

An end in itself. <<less

There is LN version of this, I would say go read that version, it's more polished.

Now where do I start, this is good for all the wrong reason. There is so much happening, so many chaos that I would say better read the manga version.

It basically start as typical summoned isekai but the summoner are super op so they think life is cheap, kind of evil type that only care about the strong hero and kill the weak one, but then. Die. Also everyone who is powerful is basically this... more>> dumb 'UwU I got super power'. Die. Suddenly there are secret sci-fi organization. Die. Then it become Rom-Com and END OF WORLD WITH EVIL GO. Die. Also also you got some side story for some chara background and then END OF WORLD 2.0. Die.

Honestly the best part is when the super arrogant evil Sage who summoned them got the taste of her own medicine and it was really satisfying. It's like Volume 4 so if you plan to drop it, finish Vol 4. <<less

Pretty well done character builds, world build and setting build.

I liked the story so far. (V6C22 at this writing)

Just so new readers understand, the MC is OP. Like so seriously op! Minor spoiler: He kills instantly.

... more>> And that is also one of the charms of this story. It's like the writer said to themselves: "Could I make a super power that even Goku or Saitama can't defeat?" and voila. here we are.

Also part of the charm of the story is our MC encounters other superpowered beings with cheat powers too. But... none as cheaty as his.

Balanced by the power of the MC is his plucky female side kick. Reminds me of Superman and Lois actually. Lois grounds Clark and the gal pal of this story kind of grounds our MC too.

And like Clark/Superman, our MC does have code of conduct. He's NOT a mu*der hobo. ONLY if you intend to harm him will you die. fast and painless too.

Overall, this character and story addresses the idea of "What power can defeat Saitama/Goku/Superman/All Cheating OP MC powers?" he can. (note: if the gods of Death meet him... they would IMMEDIATELY most likely bow to him.) <<less

A a child, there are times that we would build something like a Lego tower or a sand castle only to crush it to feel a temporary dose of being OP. Well, this is a novel built on that feeling. The author doesn't really shy away from killing a character that got chapters worth of development and foreshadowing in a single sentence just because that seems more fun.

Seriously, the MC is one dimensional most of the time but the Side characters are the ones who are running the show so... more>> it's okay. Unlike One Punch Man which employed the same tactic albeit without revealing the MC's true power to every side character, here we get to see everyone's reaction to the MC's pure power. The author is also creative in coming up with ways to show how someone recognize that they are dead or going to die so it won't get boring. <<less

This series is, first and foremost, a comedy. If you were looking for some edgy OP MC with some badly written internal struggles in which a bargain-bin author with wild delusions of being able to write attempts to get even edgier teens to root for his sad attempt at a protagonist with "depth" *cough*IAloneLevelUp*cough* you've come to the wrong place. I'll say it again, this novel is a comedy. If you did not find the comedy to be funny then rate it low and move on.

With that preface out of... more>> the way, let's get to the review. The majority of the comedy in this series revolves around the basic Japanese technique of "bokke-tsukkomi", or "Wiseguy and Straightman". The "bokke" (wiseguy) in the story is played by Takatou Yogiri: his character can be summed up as a "lazy airhead" with a skewed value sense. He tends to focus on mundanities that catch his attention while ignoring what others would consider dramatic or important events. The "tsukkomi" (straightman) is played by Dannoura Tomochika: she acts as the classic straightman who reacts to Yogiri's lack of common sense and ridiculous powers as well as the irrational "isekai" at large. These two are the focus of the story and the protagonist and deuteragonist respectively. Currently, the story also frequently features two additional characters: Dannoura Mokomoko, a spirit attached to Tomochika and another "bokke" character that plays the part of the "teasing but ignored third-wheel" who gives Tomochika more lines to react to; and Hanakawa (first-name forgotten because it never comes up after intro), who dual-plays as both "tsukkomi" and "bokke" as a pe*verted mob character whose go-to move is to beg for his life and tends to gets into unfortunate situations, usually of his own making.

I'm aware I've made that summary sound drier than a girl who saw Hanakawa prostrating his head on the ground for the first time, but the comedy of the story usually revolves around these four, so if any of that sounded interesting to you try giving it a read. Although I highly recommend you read the light novel versions as the translations for the web novel can be severely hit or miss. There are 3 light novel volumes translated at the moment with more on the way (seemingly). To be clear though, I'm not knocking the translators since, for one they do this s**t for free, and two this series is hard to translate due to the numerous jokes. There are jokes coming at you every 4-6 lines, and a translator has to endeavor not only to translate the line accurately in an understandable way but also keep the punch of the comedy intact. Unfortunately, this means that most amateurs are not cut-out to handle the translation. And as this is a comedy series, a bad translation means the jokes do not land, which invalidates the point of the series entirely. It's like going to a restaurant and being served raw ingredients and then asked to make it yourself. By the time you've managed to piece together the joke the impact is gone. This is why I recommend reading the light novel first, and if you enjoyed it a lot you can go ahead and read the web novel with low expectations while you wait for official translations of the light novel to come out. Otherwise, just stick to the light novel.

The other main aspect of Instant Death is satire. I've seen some people compare this series to One Punch Man, and that is actually not an inaccurate comparison, but the reasoning they give is usually bad. People compare ID to OPM due to having similarly airheaded overpowered protagonists, but that is an incredibly surface-level comparison, not to mention there are so many stories that could fit into such a category that the comparison becomes meaningless. No, the reason why this series is similar to OPM is due to the satirical nature of both series, they just satirize two different things. OPM satirizes the classic shounen battle-manga and a bit of western superhero comics as well, while ID satirizes the popular OP-MC isekai web/light novels. OPM makes fun of the shounen battle-manga by taking a protagonist to its logical conclusion. "If a "limitless" shounen MC kept growing literally without limit what would happen?" While ID makes fun of OP-MC isekai novels by skipping over any dramatics right to the inevitable end of any altercation. "If the OP MC will never lose and everyone KNOWS he'll never lose, why bother going through any kind of sequence?" ID's MC has no posturing, no holding back intentionally, no moves or magic being called out, no special prerequisites, no large explosions or spectacles, and no effort. ID is making fun of the fact that that in many OP isekai stories such things are just unnecessary fluff. Everyone reading knows how any altercation with the MC is going end: with the adversary on the ground, so why not just skip to it? ID pulls off its satire decently enough to make reading the unfunny parts not a chore, but it doesn't pull it off quite as well as OPM does (though imo OPM doesn't pull it off all that well either, so bear that in mind).

Thems the pros, now the cons. Although the comedy and the satire is quite good, the series is still basically a one-trick pony. Not much in the way of character or power progression. It won't offer you much of anything else beyond comedy and satire. Furthermore, the character of the deuteragonist: Tomochika, is, unlike her chest, flat. She is not uninteresting and has her own backstory and abilities, but her role in the story and characterization in general revolves too much around the protagonist: OP MC, thereby making her seem like a two-dimensional character who just wouldn't function without the protagonist.

Personally, I quite like this series. It has numerous flaws but the satire and comedy is on-point for me. The author clearly focuses on those two things to the detriment of everything else, probably because it's beyond his abilities. And that's not an insult to the author, if anything it's praise. Hyper focusing on a few strengths and ignoring everything else is better than other authors who try too hard to make a complete meaningful story even though such a thing is beyond them. In fact, isn't sharpening your limited skillset to the point of being so good you can ignore all other weaknesses the plot of many isekai? Obviously that's exaggeration. The comedy and satire of ID isn't so good you can ignore its flaws, however they're good enough to make you like the series despite them, and that's more than most isekai stories do for me.

Addendum: Addressing common complaint: the "not enough OP MC" syndrome. Rebuttal: Overlord and One Punch Man are not the two most popular OP-MC stories for no reason. Neither would have gotten the following they have now if they'd had a major increase in frequency of their MCs' curb-stomping. So with those of you with the "not enough OP MC" syndrome I leave you with these words: "People don't know what they want, they know what they like." -an ass who also happens to be right. <<less

I like it but he follow the whims of every one except the one he kills there's no unique way of what he does unlike all mc's from isekai he was just silent and kills the idiots that's all,

i like it from the start then just skipping chapters to find if it's MC that talking from the chapter or his b**b's girl too many side character interraction that it's taking soo much time before you see MC talk and they always thinking to kill the MC or isolate him from them because his dangerous and I feel like the translator before v4 get bored of what's happening because he say I like it to read and translate it but I get tired of it and he introduce another translator that translating it, too much scheme and idiots that will only die after they talk too much when they go against MC it's like a one punch man and summoned slaughter vibe but the characters is the spotlight not the MC because his so much strong even for gods and lazy you will get tired of it after v2 or half way through v3 because that's the start I skipping the chapters to many character appearing to many plot that appears and the mc's getting shadowed by the side characters, it's just ruined the fun for me cause so many things happening and you don't know what to think if she or he they them will be a character that live or die because some scheme and some avoid and some want mc's b**by girl .

SO I WILL SAY READ IT THEN DICIDE IF YOU CONTINUE BECAUSE IT'S ONLY MY TASTE THAT RUINED AND DROP IT.

Let's start with the cons first. The main problem this novel has is that the author tried to put TOO many things into the setting that some readers get overwhelmed. I feel like it was done with the intention of satire, but the author didn't make it clear enough.... more>>
Spoiler

Earth has SCP (the MC himself), supernatural being (ghost), extraterrestrial being (android pretending to be human)

This new world summoned high-schooler from Japan TOO much that half of the world population are Japanese and their descendant. The summoned kids also falls into various cliché/tropes like Hero fighting Demon lord, Revenge, OP MC trying to have slow life, etc... But all of them are simply for satire reason and Instantly killed by MC.

[collapse]

About the story: Just like the characters, most (if not all) of the plots build up over several chapters ended with the MC using his ability. If you see it in the comedy way, it's very funny; otherwise, isn't. Although there is no tension whatsoever, at least it's not a brainless horde of villains charging at the MC only to be killed. Most of the main villains know about his ability and tried to bypass it, so it left you wondering "How will he use his ability to solve this unsolvable problem?", only to find out he is more OP than you (and said villain) thought.

About the MC: His character's personality is clear from the beginning, and unchanged throughout the story because there is no room for growth. On Earth, the MC sealed his ability for obvious reason, so upon coming to the new world, you can see he experiment with that ability along the way, learning more and more way of using it (so please don't be a smarta*s and complaint that why didn't he do this and that).

Among the reviews, you can see people complaining about the MC being ruthless bloodthirsty killer, and also naive and release enemies (WHAT?). That's because the MC is perfectly balanced in between. MC has a secondary ability of detecting "danger", so he ONLY kills to prevent danger, not killing anyone who remotely inconvenience him. People probably hate it because he doesn't kill annoying character who doesn't pose a threat.

About the girls: The MC has no ability to protect anyone, so he avoided having more than one girl with him.

About the side characters: There are some depths to the various characters introduced, but it was dwarfed by the fact that anyone (except MC and his girl) can die at any moment (I shipped a character into his "harem" and the next chapter they died). <<less

i read this light novel for a while and need to stop at mid vol 2 (for some reason novel updates tell me I kept reading on vol 4 which I'm not)

the reason I stop ?, the translation is garbage, don't get me wrong, I honestly grateful for the works of translator out there that work for the sheer of passion, but I also need to be honest.

granted I'm not a native english speaker, even so, I can read various novel/light novel alike with no problem, but this one........ more>> man, half of the time, I don't even know what the hell is happening, why its happening and where its happening, scene ?, scenery?, world building ?, forget about all that, author/translator don't give much anything at all

MC basically your typical lazy "i don't give a shit" kind of shtick, its old and lazy way to build a character, the female protagonist basically your everyday generic damsel in distress.

i honestly confuse how this can get so many 5*, but hey, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. <<less

If you love OP protagonists, this will quickly become one of your favourite novels. The MC can basically kill everything. Literally everything. But if you think this makes the concept boring, you are wrong. The world building is incredibly interesting, and you get to ecnounter so many new concepts and creatures while travelling through the world along with the MC. Basically, it's like One Punch Man, but without the "everyone thinks the the MC is weak" trope.

My only compaint is the translation up to volume 4. It is not as... more>> bad as other novels, but still it's not great at all. However the author is at fault there, not so much the translator. The raws are written in a way that is very difficult to translate in english without rewritting sentences from scratch. Oh and speaking of the latter, this is exactly what the new translator does. He has picked up the novels from volume 4 onwards, and the translation has become so much better. I am really looking foward to new chapters! <<less
