Even though it was through sheer coincidence, he became the sole survivor.

The stricken ship fell to the planet below.

Alan alone managed to get to an escape pod.

Alan the Imperial Army Officer wagers his survival in this savage world on the symbiotic nanomachines (nanom) in his body.

The world he landed on was home to a prosperous human civilization, which seemed to have a strangely similar genetic pedigree to himself.

In this puzzling fantasy world of swords and sorcery, Alan will live to the fullest alongside his comrades.

What will Alan achieve in this strange world?

A Science Fiction Fantasy in a Middle Ages setting starts here.

Hi guys. SFBaka here. This review is written mostly as a reply to phreakinsane's review, which might dissuade a lot of potential readers if not addressed properly.

Let me just put this out there first:

There is no r*pe or NTR in the series. None whatsoever. I, as the translator, guarantee it. Now you folks must be wondering why phreakinsane would come to a conclusion that r*pe occurred in the particular chapter he/she mentioned, which is chapter 50. It all stemmed from Google Translate being a little off in the machine translation... more>> of said chapter leading to him/her hastily concluding that r*pe transpired when it, in fact, didn't. I can't put in any more details since it will constitute spoilers and it involves some somewhat major characters who will appear in future chapters. But, again, no r*pe or NTR folks. Read with confidence.

And for the record, there were three young women involved in the scene in question. To mistake one of them for a man (therefore hastily concluding there's NTR) is already an indication our dear machine translation reader didn't manage to actually read through the said chapter properly, let alone understand the context.

It's pretty bad. Okay, first of all, let's talk about the characters. They are flat as hell. It seriously feels like they have no emotions at all. They literally all talk the same way except for a few key moments. Like for example, one character goes like 'HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO MILORD LiKE THAT YOU PEASANT' on the first meeting, then immediately her character mellows out. What? Not to mention a highly trained knight made the s*upid mistake of endangering herself and the person she's supposed to protect by... more>> compromising their identities. Another example is a member of the army (our MC) constantly letting his guard down and making dumb mistakes. Like, he's not even a soldier or anything, dude is stated to be an extremely capable lieutenant, yet he makes still these kinds of mistakes back to back? Of course, there is also the examples listed by the other reviews that are justified by 'brainwashing' (sure that makes sense but it doesn't change the fact that the characters are boring) If I were to summarise, it would be like the author is making up standard scenarios beforehand and forcing the characters into that plan, even if it's like fitting a square block into a round hole lmao.

Everyone else is like the most generic of generic people. Bad guys are pe*verts and s*upid, good guys are background characters to highlight how cool our MC is, the guy he coincidentally saves happens to give him everything he needs, he meets random people and gives them tons of free stuff because he's a good guy, everyone! It's s*upid that everyone he meets happens to be extremely honest and kind, lacking any sort of flaws or deficiencies that can separate them from others. No, it's just 'good guy' good guy who happens to be merchant' 'good guy that has a slang'. I'm of the impression that if you want to make memorable and realistic characters, they should contain unique 'good' and 'bad' sides.

So next would be the plot I guess. It's boring. Nothing happens at all. It's just 'oh they did this' and 'oh they did this again' and 'oh wait did you already forget about this? Just to make sure let me make them do it again'. One chapter literally repeated the same sentence like around ten or more times (I can't be bothered to find it again). There's a key difference between repeating a sentence for emphasis and not knowing how to write a novel. How about the content? Well, it's cooking and cooking and cooking again. I swear the main point of this novel is actually cooking. At first, I thought it wouldn't worship Japanese food but it ended up doing so in the end. I do wonder why so many Japanese novels like to do that. Does anyone actually enjoy reading it?

One of the most s*upid parts of this novel has to be the money. They have a ton of different kinds, small copper, large copper, small silver, large silver etc. Etc. Except there is also a numerical number like 134, 033 dollars. So that's already pretty hard to remember. Do you know what's worse? YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW MUCH THAT IS IN OUR DOLLARS. He asks 'oh so how much does a bread cost' at the start like Japanese MCs do to convert it to yen, but guess what, the novels responds with 'Idk lol' and never brings it up again. And the novel also never converts the money to you. So basically, you have no idea what the significance of a dollar is, therefore the constant repetition of how much so and so costs and how much money this will bring in means absolutely nothing.

They give quite an in-depth explanation of the sci-fi world but don't really do anything with it other than the nanomachines, you can argue that it's for later but I'm of the opinion that if you give some random information, you have to show why we needed to know that within like 10 chapters.

How about the magic system? Well, it's garbage. I had high hopes since it's a sci-fi and magic book, so I was expecting creative usage of magic and combination of tech and magic but no. The most they did with it was a magic scanner. The rest is garbage RPG like magic with stuff like 'Fireball' and 'Fire Arrow' and the MC is great because wow he can do it stronger and faster than others thanks to his nanomachines. Very disappointed about this, they could have at least tried to do something interesting. Like 'MC has less mana than others because he's not native, so he makes up for it in efficiency and creativity instead!'

The novel has harem and romance tags as main tags, yet after 30 damn chapters, there is not a hint of both tags even remotely appearing so I have no idea why they are there. At this point I'm starting to suspect the author is going to write something like 'I love you' 'I love you too' and wrap it up in a few chapters with no set up at all.

I'm lazy to write more but all you need to know is that this novel is bad. It's good as filler but not entertaining at all. <<less

I started reading this novel because it has magic and sci-fi (maybe also harem, because I am a teen with wild fantasies and raging hormone), but I overlook the cooking tag and boy was that a mistake. I don't even remember for how long he kept on worshipping japanese food, with a little bit of european, still I didn't gave up on the novel on hopes that it will get better but spoiler alert I was wrong.

The story is extremely lazily written and filled with fillers. The characters are dumb... more>> and bland. The bandits are bad, pe*verts and dumb, the side characters apart from the specified bad guys are somehow always good people, why? Why would every normal guys the MC met has to be good and no flaws. And the ladies in this novel are literally mc's hypemen. I can talk more about characters but I guess other reviews had done that for me.

Now lets talk about magic system which was tr*sh. The way the MC learned magic was totally asinine. He literally learned spells with crazy dumb imagination which somehow the natives of the 'magic' world lacks. Also the two girls from the mc's world also has nanites but they are somehow not as proficient in magic as the MC for god knows what reason.

And lets not talk about sword fighting arts. A sword combo literally taken from game is supposedly somehow better than the knights who has years of experience real sword experience. I get its a fantasy world and stuff but seriously learning sword moves from a game is too much. I mean I know you wanna make the MC strong but do it in a way that makes sense.

The MC is your standard s*upidly overpowered dense protagonist who is like a normal foodie instead of a proficient soldiers of a civilisation which has countless star system under its control. He was alert and careful at first and then started becoming less careful, easily trusting. He doesn't negotiate prices with merchants (maybe he thinks that they wont scam him because he saved their life or something), easily trusts the knights of his clan when there might be an insider or something but something like that doesn't happen because the story is 'simple'. I guess that's what we call 'character development'. Also more than half his adventure experience is cooking. I came here to find space Rambo but instead found well mannered Gordon Ramsay. My disappointment is immeasurable.

Long story short I wouldn't recommend anyone this novel. But if you like sories like this with no up and down, kinda like a dead man's ECG then go for it. <<less

Was this novel axed? Vol 4 of the LN was published in Dec 2019 and the latest chapter (95) of the WN was released in Feb 2020. The last chapter of the LN corresponds to chapter 88 of the WN. It has been nearly a year since this novel has been updated. If that is the case, that is pretty disappointing. The pace of novel picked up after chapter 49, less food, more action, which was more than welcomed.

This was a very enjoyable read! Mostly because the MC isnt a pushover, has clear goals, and is very able.

The characters surrounding him are pretty good too in terms of personalities. There are some parts where it gets pretty in-depth about food but it doesn't really make it bad in my opinion.

My only concern about this is that the web novel which is being translated has been stopped by the author due to his release of the light novels. It stops at chapter 95, which I read via google translate... more>> and it leaves off at a very important part which kind of ticks me off. I really want to know what the translator is planning since it seems that the web novel wont be continuing anymore. Is he going to keep translating a dead end web novel? <<less

As of chapter 17 I was totally s**ked in to this story. I liked the translation, the premise, and the characters at that point.

I especially like the story being portrayed by two different perspectives the way the author executes this has been very entertaining for me thus far.

I continued with mtl and later on there is a scene which made me drop the series and drop the rating. But it started out really good. So I guess just don't read past chapter 49?

I don't recommend starting it though since the... more>> story is still far from over even 90 chapters later. Unless, ofcourse, r*pe and ntr don't bother you like they do me. Then you may still get something out of this.

Spoiler

A scene where two women are getting r*ped and the husband of one of them is being forced to watch.

The women are "saved" by MC and kill the bandits... but.... NTR and r*pe are both instant drops for me. Totally ruined the series for me

[collapse]

NTR and r*pe are both instant drops for me. This novel has both in atleast one scene. Totally ruined the series.

Although everything up to that point was pretty lighthearted, unfortunately, this one scene was enough for me to end it. :' ( <<less

There are a lot of important points that I want to touch on in this review. We will start with the bare bone basics; the premise.

Our main character is an imperial officer onboard a galactic spaceship travelling at light speed through the galaxy on an exploration mission. They encounter problems, the main character is the only survivor. The story revolves around him crash landing on a planet nearby and his future experiences.

What we are given premise wise is fantastic. It's reminiscent of Star Trek and Stargate. Two very popular American... more>> television series in the last few decades. There's reasonable potential for growth in the story and for the most part, at least at the start, the story meets those expectations.

The problems arise somewhere around the 10th chapter, maybe earlier than that, maybe later, I'm generalizing. The author takes a reasonably entertaining premise and sets the whole thing aside and proceeds to write 37 chapters about food. Yes, food. Every other chapter is some kind of Japanese cuisine. He goes into painful detail about catching, preparing, and cooking various different kinds of food. While there are still points relating to the main story being made, they are few and so far in between that you can make a reasonable distinction of these chapters being filler.

There are some caveats to this opinion. An argument could be made that the main character in question was unaware of certain events in the story and that then led them to live this "foodie" lifestyle. To those people, I would like to say that whether the main character knew that information or not is irrelevant. I, as the reader, and many others in the future, most likely, will not be able to make that distinction because of the way the author worded that entire portion of the story and the overall feel of the story thus far.

Very few people are willing to suffer through 37 chapters about food when the main premise is supposedly space exploration. This can be proved by the comment section on the translation website. The translator specifically stated that the food chapters would end at chapter 37 because the readers were starting to drop like flies.

Because of this, I cannot, in good conscious, recommend this novel to others. They would have to be willing to suffer through 37 chapters of mostly unimportant food descriptions only to 'maybe' be rewarded with a decent novel.

I have read up to chapter 43 part 3. That is roughly 7 chapters worth of actual content that is only "semi" focused on food. Combined with the chapters at the start of the novel that were very sparse with their food descriptions, we are looking at a total of maybe 15 chapters in all, of actual, true to premise, content.

From here, I want to take a step back and set aside the previous mentioned chapters about food. I want to address this next portion towards these 15 or so total chapters that stay true to the premise of the novel.

For the most part, the overall direction that these 15 or so chapters take story wise leave much to be desired. Many times in the story I felt that the author was sacrificing more exciting plot options for a more Japanese-esque style of writing. In my opinion, I deem a writing style that is very slow-paced and slice of life heavy to be a Japanese-esque writing style. That being said, I do not dis-value these story directions because after all it is the authors choice what direction he takes with his writing. All of that being said, the direction the author takes, in my opinion, vastly undermines his story premise and goes no short distance in dissuading readers from continuing.

We must remember that these 15 chapters are split between the first few chapters and the very last 7 chapters that have been translated to English thus far. In between these two chunks is a very heavily laden portion of writing about various types of food. These have very thin ties to the overall plot and only serve as a rather long filler towards the rest of the actual novel.

Going forward, I would expect to see some very heavy action oriented plot points in the future. Though, with the current feel of the story and what I've seen thus far, I do not see the author making any serious changes in his writing style and as such my expectations are rather ambivalent.

In the future, if my review were into fall in the hands of the author, I would sincerely suggest a change in direction towards his next writing endeavor. This novel with all its flaws, is not bad. It is merely not true to premise. A better title would have been; "Spreading recipes across the galaxy!". Or some other title that highlighted the authors desire to write a slow paced slice of life story about food. There's absolutely nothing wrong with writing about food. Lots of people eat food, I myself eat food everyday. However I sincerely do not believe an action oriented kingdom building genre to be in the authors repertoire. Perhaps in the future, with more experience, the author would be able to make more progress in that direction, however at this time, I do not see it going very well in this particular novel. <<less

Alright, I think I've had enough.

This novel is very poorly planned. There is so much filler that it really makes you wonder if the author just wanted to satisfy a word count. The author heavily relies on tell-don't-show where it's basically just "MC does this, MC does that".

Do not take that cooking tag lightly. The author is constantly jerking off about how good the MC is at cooking. Normally, I don't mind the cooking parts of isekai all that much, but this author just goes overboard with it that I... more>> find myself wondering why he didn't just write a cooking novel instead.

Now for MC himself. He's a blatant self-insert. He has the exact same goody two-shoes, overly humble, overly polite, overly generous "personality" that's copy-pasted through every other isekai out there. He's so overpowered that he's basically the strongest person on the planet. He can instantly learn magic just by imagining it. He can basically deus ex machina away any problems with his nanomachines. Language gap? Don't worry about that, nanomachines will learn the language for you. Don't know something? Why bother figuring it out for himself when he can just ask his trusty built-in wikipedia. The way his character is written is honestly just so lazy. The other characters aren't any better as they all exist to praise or gawk at the MC whenever he does something. If you take away the sci-fi parts in the beginning, you basically have a generic isekai with nothing that stands out.

+1 star for the excellent translations though. <<less

I always wanted an isekai sci-fi that wasn't based on a game or a mecha, or that starts out as a regular isekai knights and magic in a medieval setting, then gets ruined by mechs or spaceships like Smartphone and Death March.

This one is awesomely written, starting off as a sci-fi, in which the MC is on a spaceship that is almost destroyed, so he has to eject, and lands on a planet in a medieval era, with knights and magic. The sci-fi is tastefully kept going throughout the story.

Another... more>> thing that makes this isekai different from all of the others and makes it so great, is it doesn't have a bunch of people that have also been brought to this world, killing the excitement. It makes for a much better story to have just the MC who has been brought to the world.

Again, on my top 5 favorites list. LNT is one of my favorite TL groups as they have some of the best TLs out there, and SFBaka is the best. Total props to LNT and SFBaka.

So, why didn't I give it full 5 stars? That's all on the author. He totally messes the whole thing up by completely stopping the story for 2 or more chapters at a time, to turn this amazing novel into a s*upid, boring cookbook. If I wanted to read a cookbook, I'd go get one of my wife's cookbooks off the kitchen shelf. <<less

Its not a masterpiece but its not bad either. Its an enjoyable read, a bit dry, except for the food chapters. Oh god in the heavens above. What did you put this poor author thru that his mind would end up warped enough to think dedicating chapters to cooking and recipes is a good idea. Please send Saint A Pimp Named Slickback to guide the author away from the evils of the isekai cooking channel.

The story started fine as the intergalactic officer (protagonist) was trapped in a fantasy-like planet and met a gal there. However afterwards there are quite a number of chapters about enjoying good japanese food and it turns out to be one of the typical slow-pace stories with overpowered dense protagonists partying with gals. There are many cases in which what the characters did didn't make any sense. Also there are too many pov parts. So far it doesn't show originality and any exciting plots, but let's see whether there will... more>> be any improvement later. <<less

I give this 5 stars of 5. This is unique unlike another isekai with bullsh*t plot and teenager loser MC (I hate this kind of novels the most). What I like from this novel is there some explanation regarding the civilization difference. And those bugs, I'm not have to take long to understand it, because the author seems using Starship Troopers as the reverence. Just like about magic explanation, if you read "She is both called Goddess and Satan", it has similiar type explanation. Magic as energy substance, and those... more>> nanoms are able to understand the principle behind it, so it doesn't using aptitude like in common isekai novel which is overused and I'm tired reading it. The pacing and focal points in the wn are honestly a mess and suffers from common wn pitfalls.
This really becomes clear when you read the manga (which has much better pacing, and focus).
If this has a LN version, read that instead, or better yet, check out the manga.

The story and premise is great, plus the magic and the mechanics are explained properly.

The MC is overpowered in that world not because heck anyone can achieve what his doing if they have the same thing he has.

Anyway the premise and the execution is done well the world building and the foundation for how things like magic works is well explained that's why I like the story plus the MC have clear goals that they have to achieve and not just random.

The only issue I have with the MC is... more>> his 25 but his so dense which is topical with harem protag. That's the only issue I have thus the 4 star rating. <<less

I enjoyed this book quite a lot and was very sad when I hit the end and realized that it has been put on hiatus for almost a year. I hope it eventually picks back up. This is one of the better translations, I have read, as the book reads very smoothly and the sentence structure is quite good. I was not being yanked out of the book to figure out what the author meant to say versus what was written.

My 5 stars because of these reasons:
1. It's sci-fi mixed with 'magic' elements and not quite isekai.
2. I always like the more scientific magic instead of pure 'we don't know, but it's just magic' magic. Some kind of reasonable cause of the magic is better than just 'because'.
3. The MC is light hearted, and can be vicious when need be. Good mix.
4. The MC female companions are not too idiotic. They seem to do things like normal people would.
5. The world building isn't too shabby.... more>> I can picture it easily thanks to the translators. Good job.

NOW... the warning. This story reminds me of sci-fi writer DAVID WEBER and his SAFEHOLD series. In that we have 1 lone MC with super science tech out to change the world by upgrading it from medieval tech level to 25th century tech levels. WHILE in SAFEHOLD series it took about a dozen big arse novels to get to STEEL battleships. This story on the other hand should NOT be expected to follow the same steps. The Japanese writer is doing a LITE version of SAFEHOLD series. I suspect tech advances and world wars (yep, SAFEHOLD had a war between continents over tech advancement and ideology, will be quick and dirty and not take a half dozen books to go through. Maybe.

All the same, I do like this story. Even if it's a SAFEHOLD lite version. <<less

It's a very interesting concept and I really liked the beginning parts where there was a lot of technology and survival involved.

Unfortunately later, the aspect of technology fades into the background and it turns into an average "slice of life in another world with powerful protagonist" story.

I'm still giving it high points for the concept, beginning and the funny and crazy aim the MC decides on. There's a lot of potential there, but so far it's a very slow paced story. Also in hiatus.
