On the Third-Year of Kaihuang, as the Great Sui unfolds its curtains to welcome the glorious Tang Dynasty in succession to the Northern Dynasty, Yang Jian established a secret agency, the Jiejian Bureau in preparation to unify the world.

In a stormy night filled with snow, a convoy of tribute sent by the Kingdom of Khotan was ambushed and massacred with not a living soul left behind. The Second Commander of the Jiejian Bureau, Feng Xiao came forth to investigate the case under Imperial Orders.

A gathering of storms would soon take place in a little city which sat on the frontier, called the City of Six Crafts, where all the top martial powers across the lands would meet.

The ever successful Second Commander Feng meets a dead end when he ran into a Master Daoist with ailing health.

All would be unknown if they had never crossed paths, but once their paths crossed, Second Commander Feng realized this ailing man had more secrets than himself.

This is no doubt the best novel I've read so far disregarding the bit of grammatical error in the translation especially in arc 2 and 3 but hey, can't complain afterall it was a great read and I can't be more grateful to the translators for actually making peerless accessible to read.

The intrigue, mystery, romance, character design... everything was on point and the comedic undertone...*chef's kiss. I can guarantee on Feng Xiao's peac*ck feathers that you will atleast laugh once in every two chapters if not every chapter!

Yes, I know this is very early to judge. But honestly, I can't bring myself to continue read this story because I don't like the gong, it can be said that I hate his type of character. Ugh, his treatment for the shou was deplorable. Even when I've read other reviewers said that the shou was not that meek not easy to bully doesn't mean I'm happy with the treatment he received. Maybe this is just a matter of taste. Previously I wanted to give this 2 star rating but... more>> I know it's unfair because the author write beautifully even though the gong personality was awful at the beginning of this novel. I don't think I'll continue reading this novel. <<less

Omg! YOU. HAVE. GOT. TO. READ. THIS. NOVEL.

Such a greatness!!

Chemistry is really good and cute between the MC and ML.

It's about solving crimes. MC and ML hate each other and always pin things against each other lol! ML knows how to fight and MC doesn't. But MC is pretty smart and not some damsel in distress that always need ML's saving. That's what I love about this author's MCs. They don't need the ML to save their butt!

Such good a good novel!

Wow! This was quite a wonderful read. It had all the elements that make you keep reading it without break. I have read half of the other famous novel by the same author, 'Thousand Autumns' and was quite impressed because let's admit it, you don't come across many Chinese novels having a good plot without loopholes and the writing was really good (or should I say translation was good) without any far fetched drama and that too in historical wuxia genre.

I heard that this can be considered as sequel to... more>> TA but didn't really see many overlapping points between two. While this is also a martial arts novel, TA is more into exploring martial arts and techniques have some magical aspect to them. But Peerless is more heavily centered on mystery and intrigue. Arguably, ML is top martial artist and fights like after every three chapters but I was always more concerned with how MC is going to tackle the situation.

Plot is written brilliantly, characters are three dimensional and you come to understand them and why they acted the way they did. I couldn't even hate antagonist and would always look forward to MC and him confronting each other. MC is highly intelligent with retentive memory and vast knowledge though has a sickly body but that doesn't stop him at all. ML is also intelligent and while he may be a bit ruthless, he is quite likeable. Romance is slow but the interaction between MC and ML is really enjoyable.

This novel is really worth reading! I hope more people discover this gem. <<less

This novel really made me laugh a lot. The two main characters are on the same side, but at the same time they can't help but plot against each others. The ending was underwhelming, but I hope the extra chapters will help complete the story.

Couple (TopxBottom) : Feng Xiao x Cui Buqu

I read this novel before Thousand Autumns, and understood everything on its own so there's no need to really read Thousand Autumns unless you want some context on the world-building.

I absolutely loved this novel. If you love bickering couples with one having a mysterious background, definitely check this out. The humor is kicking, AND the plot was amazing. Both Feng Xiao and Cui Buqu work for two different factions of the empire, one belonging to the emperor and the other belonging... more>> to the faction owned by the empress. In a sense, they are enemies, but also not. They solve mysteries and crimes together which actually contributes to the bigger plot altogether.

Feng Xiao is a narcissistic, c*cky and arrogant man who messes with Cui Buqu, one who was born sick and is often overlooked because of it. However, Cui Buqu is such an interesting character despite his sickness and his brains are HUGE. I absolutely loved their dynamic and how Cui Buqu basically folds for our narcissistic king. I also ended up loving
Spoiler

the final boss and pity him a lot... I totally get where he's coming from and found him to be such an interesting character because he genuinely respects Cui Buqu (though others may argue that he just wanted more allies), and it's a pity that there wasn't much more about him.

This is hands down one of my favorite novels regardless of language. I read this novel in raw Chinese supplemented by the (very excellent) audiobook and Dust Bunny’s translation. I was addicted as I was reading it and stayed up way too late several nights because I couldn’t put it down. I am genuinely sad that I finished it, and am now re-reading various parts. Upon second read, I am picking up so many details and character points that I missed the first time. For some reason I can’t fathom,... more>> this novel doesn’t have the fan base that Thousand Autumns does among English-speaking fans (though it does among Chinese readers). Thousand Autumns was great but for me it dragged on way more than Peerless did and Peerless is more polished.

Meng Xi Shi is an amazing author and has created some amazing characters. Thousand Autumns had some spit-out-water hilarious moments due to Yan Wushi’s poisonous tongue. Now take that poisonous tongue and give it to BOTH ML and MC and have them bicker and sabotage each other for almost 200 chapters.

In typical Meng Xi Shi style, the romance is slow burn. There was chemistry from the start (if you look hard enough through the mutual sabotage lmao) and the romantic developments are incredibly natural and smooth. At the start, ML’s narcissism makes it virtually impossible to imagine him loving anyone but himself, and MC’s goal-oriented nature (ahem, workaholic) and incredible brain mean that very few people understand him or match his level. As the story progresses, ML and MC slowly come to trust, then rely on each other.

And finally, they come to see each other as exceptions to the rest of the world. ML, who is disinterested in even the great beauties of the world, genuinely sees MC as lovable and above them all. MC finds in ML someone who is worth even more than his goals, and who is worth living for... or specifically, worth living for so he can lay down more pits for him, lmao. <<less

My rating is just personal preference. The author is still a good writer. The translation is still good. But despite all of that, I would say I don't quite care about the characters or plot. I actually find it quite forced and slightly illogical. I'm not sure if Feng is the MC or if cui is but Feng's personality did like a 360 when he met Cui. How is it he was so cold, but then he just becomes this shameless narcissist for content ? Literally I think it's just... more>> because the author knows people like this kinda of enemies dynamic between leads, but unfortunately it comes off forced imo with these two. Because it doesn't make sense.

Spoiler

if they are the commanders of the king and empress secret groups.... Why not own up to that cui? Like he purposely tortured himself and made the investigation for both of them longer just to contrive a sense of hatred beteeen them that would have never happened if they were just leaders who were willing to be upfront. Ok even if they wanted to solve this first for glory, cui could still be honest about his identity and still motherf*cking do sh*t in the background without getting caught bc imo Feng's group seems incapable despite all their hype lol it's just. Overly contrived. It comes off obvious to me what thee author was trying to do. I wish I could not see it lol. I wish it came off more natural for me. But it doesn't make sense.

Cui literally was like ok I'm gonna sit in this black box for 5 days and get poisoned for 2 of those days just because I want to be secretive against an (technically) ally government group, just so I figure it all out before them. like make it make sense. The only logic is that the author wanted them to have a reason to "hate each other" bc ppl love banter and "enemies" to lovers dynamic. Imo overly contrived bc illogical.

It's unfortunate bc the writing is good but I dont think the character and world building is that great.

I think this author does best when they can reference a world background to anchor their characters and stories from. Because I think making their own world is too much for them to handle. I really recommend their other much better book which is more focused on the cases (which I like) & has smarter characters called um the minister one of the 14th or something lol. Anyways unfortunate bc I think thee author could've done better. This author is capable of such great heights that I do feel disappointed with this one.

[collapse]

I really do think this author wrote this for the fans lol. It comes off like "entertainment". Arguably better written than a lot of other books. But just not my type. So I'm done lol. <<less

This novel is good. If you like to use your brain during reading, this is your novel ok. It has all of the nice features you'd like in a politically captivating read: drama, action, strategic retaliations, political plotting, a very tension-heavy rivalry between two outstanding hotties... everything. I think the worldbuilding is believable, the tensions between nations make sense, the flow is just written well. I love how MC & ML are two different sides of the same coin. They contrast yet still somehow connect with each other.

With that being... more>> said, Cui Buqu & Feng Xiao... *chef's kisses*

They're an awesome power couple. Yes, Cui Buqu is on a high pedestal. He's a perfect case of "don't be fooled by appearances". He's quick, witty, sharp, & extremely willful. I can understand why everyone is so enraptured by him. He's just a person that you can't help but be charmed by. Feng Xiao is hilarious to me. I love very coquettish, arrogant, prideful characters; I think they're so fun & he is! Some may find him to be annoying, especially with his relentless adoration for his own looks. But he has the ability to back up his boasts. He's strong, equally sharp—a worthwhile contender to Cui Buqu. But yeah when it comes to my gongs I'm gonna prefer Yan Wushi (Thousand Autumns) cuz I got a thing for crazies.

I'll be frank though—I enjoyed the main leads more than I ever did the plot. If it were not for the main leads being Feng Xiao & Cui Buqu, I would have dropped this novel like a hot potato. Not to say that the plot was bad; that would be a lie. But I think it wouldn't have captured my complete attention if it weren't for the two main characters. I could care less about the side characters & the villains tbh.

Thank you to the TLs; you are always phenomenal! <<less

I'm too lazy to write a proper review. scattered thoughts: this was such a fun ride -- lots of good tropey stuff and it is more 'genre-y' than Thousand Autumns, which seemed very experimental and read more like a character study (i loved it though).

just a note that there is the usual portrayal of non-Han Chinese ethnic groups as barbarians and savages skilled in dark magic, poison, curses...

this author also really likes politics and it was hard to keep track of and stay interested with the many side characters that... more>> appeared in the last arc. one of the villains was brought in really late (felt a bit abrupt -- lack of build-up) and I felt that the last bit would have been stronger if she had been incorporated into the story more frequently.

anyway, this was so fun! <<less

If you want fluff, meng, dog fod and fast relationship development then this is definitely NOT for you!!! This is about strategy, schemes, competition, politics, rivalry and battle of wits between the protagonists and protagonist-villains. The romance is subtle until the very end which suits the main characters.

The romance is sloooooooooooow burn, it takes forever for them to recognised their feeling for each other. The bickering tho is funny and the ML and MC's are both OP in different way. Although, shou's sickly and almost on the verge of dying everytime but he's really, really smart and no damsel in distress while the gong is a top cultivator with unparalleled beauty but narcissistic and with mysophobia, so it's hilarious from time to time. Overall, a good read.

I really love this one. Lighthearted, with a good (and winding plot), romance develops steadily, humour is top tier. This must be the embodiment of the enemies-to-lovers trait, really loved watching the 2 main characters gradually develop feelings for each other. Their relationship is cute too, and consistent throughout, reminding me of Tom and Jerry.

Cui Buqu is physically weak but he is extremely intelligent. Paired with Feng Xiao who is one of the top cultivators, they make a great pair. Loved how they collaborated to solve mysteries together, and how... more>> they began to trust each other.

I really love this novel. I just finished it now. The plot, characters, and everything are excellent. The mysteries are interesting and will get you restless.

The MC is an invalid sickly man but very crafty that he didn't even need to have a powerful martial arts skill to win a battle. While the ML is always full of himself and loves his appearance so much that he would even marry his own reflection hahaha. The two are both leaders of two different bureaus, under the Emperor and Empress. They loved... more>> plotting and digging pits for each other. Until the ending, they still didn't change except that they both have feelings for each other.

I love the supporting characters, even some of the villains. They're just so interesting and likable.

This is a must-read for those who loved cultivation novels but doesn't like smuts. This is definitely enjoyable and fun to read. The main characters are so funny, especially ML. He's so cute and funny when he falls to the pits MC digs for him.

The story is so deep. At the end of the story, you can connect the mysteries together and find that they were all related. I would say, this is one of the best novels I read. It didn't disappoint me and it reaches my high standards.

There's only one defect but it would not affect the story but I'm not telling it. Maybe you'll not notice it either because I only notice it after reading one of the reviews.

Anyways. Overall, five stars. <<less

This is an amazing read. Such mindblowing mysteries and such an amazing intelligent person to solve them. The ML and MC was awesome, I loved how they trusted each other and knew the other will be there. The funny bickering, the game of pitting each other was a delight. The descriptions of fighting scenes are beautiful.

I also liked how interesting the villains are. Their intelligence is no joke.

Peerless was an enjoyable read. The MC is very lovable. He's a very intelligent man whose health is in bad condition. He has a cold and blunt personality. The ML is incredibly stunning, the side characters always pause to admire his beauty. He is a top martial artist and is a shameless individual. The two men always clash with each other which brings a lot of humor.

The plot was very engaging and I couldn't stop reading it once I started. This novel is a slow burn. Do not expect there... more>> to be lots of romantic moments. The side characters are endearing.

For my enjoyment, it was a 5 star, I loved their bickering throughout the story and how they built up their trust towards each other. The plot was good, I have issues with some things but I am a sucker for a good mystery, so I enjoyed it. I do wish we could have saw some more romance between them, but it was a good read.

Spoiler

I will say the ending was very abrupt, but the extras made up for it. One issue I can say was the villain of the story, Xiao Lu. His ending and buildup were fine but for me fell down towards the end and I felt he could have been developed some more. Some other side characters I felt could have benefited from some more developed.

The plot itself is nothing new: political intrigue with all the cases linking to each other at the end, nothing particularly earth-shattering. Also the novel took inspiration from real-life history (Sui Dynasty), so despite the events in the novel, we know the outcome in the end.

However, the main selling point of this novel are the main leads, Cui Buqu and Feng Xiao. I really like their dynamic, as without them, the plot by itself would be pretty lacklustre.

There's some issue with pacing as some arcs are slow to... more>> get through, others fast, but honestly I don't mind because I kept getting distracted by FengCui's bickering and their need to constantly pit each other as they go around solving cases lol

I think some of the side characters need more fleshing out:

Spoiler

Especially the main villain, Xiao Lu, there is some buildup (as shown how the cases are linked to each other), and Xiao Lu as a character is compelling (he has a reason for why he does the things he does), but his presence felt really disconnected from the rest of the story, and only at the end did he actively play a role. But then again, the ending did have me on the edge of my seat, seeing Xiao Lu and Ququ working together and understanding each other, I had a lot of complicated feelings lmao, if anything I quite liked Xiao Lu as a character

[collapse]

Ultimately, it was a good read. I recommend reading Thousand Autumns first (I read Peerless first, don't be like me) because it makes sense chronologically + there are easter eggs in reference to Thousand Autumns in Peerless <<less
