They All Say I’ve Met a Ghost

Hello, everyone! My name is Shen Jianguo. I am a night school instructor teaching ideological development and Marxist philosophy, occasionally analyzing recent policies and measures for my students.

All my classes are held in the middle of the night; I’ve never seen my coworkers or students during the day. The training institute’s classrooms are all in abandoned schools, hospitals, or residences. The license plate number of the bus that picks me up is 444; it always arrives at my house at precisely midnight and disappears at five in the morning.

What? You’re saying I’ve met a ghost? Impossible! As a staunch scientific materialist, I absolutely don’t believe there’s any such thing as ghosts!

I’ve only had one problem recently: couldn’t the training institute hold its classes a little earlier? Wouldn’t around 8 PM do? I fear neither heaven nor hell, but I do fear going bald.

This is the story of a righteous, upstanding new teacher, going around to teach ghosts how to be righteous, upstanding citizens, in the process not knowing they are ghosts at all. XD

... more>> If you want the condensed version, this is a shorter, BL. version of Assassination Classroom, with equally lovable students, the same foolish OP teacher, and an intriguing extra (ML) who makes his first appearance wanting to hack all of these ghosts to death! Lol

Alright, before I go into my review, here are a few points to note:

    • This is not a horror novel. Even though it contains horror elements, this novel can't be considered to be in the horror genre in any way or form. It does not aim to scare people, and its primary purpose is humour + slice of life.
    • 1ST person POV
    • This is a novel that is a jab at your typical horror novels. XD Therefore, it is quite unique indeed. The run is only 42 Chapters, so as expected, you have all the typical shortcomings AND strengths of a short-running novel.
Okay. Here we go:

Side Characters: (Usually, I would go into MC, then ML, then their relationship first, but in this case, I actually think the side characters are the highlight of this novel) :

Spoiler

"Teacher Shen, thank you for everything."

[collapse]

Spoiler

"Even beyond death, I still have to take tests?! TM is this damn thing?! I'm going to reincarnate now! QAQ"

[collapse]

These side characters refer to three parties: 1) The Co-worker, 2) The Bus Driver, 3) The students.

We follow the journey of the MC through the moment he steps into the (Ghost) bus to get to the (Ghost) school, to the moment he makes his (Ghost) students see the light of things and eventually learn to put down whatever's chaining them to our reality and move on to the next world.

As mentioned, though the MC's personality is charming, these side characters are actually what drew me in most.

Unlike the other novels, where ghosts are portrayed as ghosts who are just there to scare people / became as such because of overcomplicated pasts, we learn to see these ghosts as people through the eyes of our MC.

There are some who are a result of an unfortunate turn of events. There are some who suffered a bad hand, but nonetheless prays for the better of the world. And though they may be foolish, silly, and are always trying to scare our very human MC, we learn to adore them for how human they are at the end of it. Every departure of a student brings some sadness with it.

I won't talk too much about these students. It's best to get surprised and delighted by them yourselves.

All I can say is, being witness to their struggles through life and death, they have drastically charmed me.

There are two side-characters in particular I want to point out though:

A) The Driver

Spoiler

"To be able to scare you, that can be considered my greatest accomplishment as a ghost." - The Driver says with a thin smile.

[collapse]

B) The Co-Worker (Teacher Liu) (PS. Ghost)

Spoiler

"Haha... Haha... hahahaha!" Teacher Liu laughs with tears in his eyes. "I've lived through all these years seeing only the pains and ills of this world. But to think all this time... All I had to do is to fill that book with the joys of the world!"

[collapse]

There isn't much to say about the driver, though I'd say he's the coolest man I've ever seen in my lifetime. Please don't mistake his grumbles for being bad-natured. Think about it, he lost all his ghost passengers just because of one human man.

But as for Teacher Liu, I can unequivocally say, I bawled at his part because of how much I sympathized with him. He's the undisputed NO. 1 of the Comedic Peanut Gallery. But when he cracks, it's really just... I really just don't know how I feel, okay?! *sniffles*

In any case, these side characters made me fall in love with this world. And though this may be the reverse of Assassination Classroom (students going instead of the teacher), I teared up because it tore my heart that much more each time our MC bid farewell to a student (who even specially made to thank him), not knowing that will be his last time seeing them. The FINAL graduation especially *sobs*

The MC:

Spoiler

"Please don't ever put my notebook out in the sun!" - Teacher Liu, who passes his notebook (MADE OUT OF HIS SKIN) to the MC to help him scare off any daring students

MC [Coats a layer of protection over the skin of the book + Puts the notebook out in the direct sun under the brightest hour of the day for 4Hours] : "Mm-hm! This notebook is so precious to Teacher Liu. I must help him take the best care of it!"

Teacher Liu: Help...I... am... Dying...

[collapse]

If you want the comedic version: He doesn't believe in ghost. He doesn't believe in ghost. He doesn't believe in ghost!

If you want the truly moving version, it's aptly put by the author in one of their notes: "To him, they are students before they are ghosts in his eyes."

It's HILARIOUS, how he goes around reasoning every single supernatural thing he comes across.

Tongue that is several metres long? Must be fake!

Hair in his toilet? Who's so ill-natured as to toss a wig here?!

A man who's dressed like an exorcist? =_= I must correct this young man before he becomes crooked!

Comedy is definitely the main tone of this story. And it is all thanks to the MC.

++ One more hilarious thing: The MC is OP, but in the sense where he just so happens to be born under some lucky stars. All the ghosts are afraid of him to the point where-

Spoiler

MC: Huh? [Blood drips out of a cut on his finger]

Ghosts: AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

[collapse]

He is the poster-boy of science and the anti-thesis of every horror-related thing you throw at him! He can give ya a scientific good explanation!

He's also super-brave, and super-smart, and super-silly. Oh, he is also gay, so you don't have to worry about confused protags or dogblood drama over that aspect. Anything else?

Oh, right! He is an extremely good teacher!

Though sometimes, you may find him to be imperfect in the sense that he is far too perfect, always knowing what to say in various situations (provided that that they aren't ghosts! *cackles*), the fact is this sincerity of his is a trait of his which makes him so respectable in my eyes. Our society is always in need of righteous and honest people whose eyes are not tainted no matter how much ills of this world they see. The MC is precisely this kind of person, and he is exactly what you'll expect from a twenty-something fresh graduate who is eagerly looking forward to enter the workforce.

The ML:

Spoiler

"I just need five minutes from you. All I need is five minutes. In that time, regardless of whether there's a dog gnawing on my bu*t or a chicken or mosquito that flies out... Can you just focus on me and listen to what I say?" -- The poor helpless ML, who's at his wits' end after getting smacked mid-confession due to a mosquito

[collapse]

Spoiler

"I have never thought I'd meet a person like you!" -- The ML laughs incredulously, flabbergasted after discovering what kind of person the MC is PS. This is the moment he falls in love with him

[collapse]

First off, he's from a sect that's here to exorcist ghosts. I don't really get that mumbo jumbo, but it was incredible, how he and the MC seemed to be having two different conversations at once, one talking about science and the other answering with a "Mmn. So it's blah-blah-blah-insert spiritual stuff here". By Incredible, I mean hilarious X'DDD

In the beginning, I still thought he would be one of those rash, brutish children you see around. But as it turns out, our ML here is a sweet guy who would run for 10 hours straight just to protect the MC (he would do so for anyone, because to him, it is his duty!). Once he understood that the MC wasn't under any particular danger, he also quietly smiled and overlooked him, not wanting to rattle him with the fact that "THEY'RE GHOSTS!" and possibly remove the God's saintly protection of him.

Tbh, it is a little hard to identify his charm, because we're looking through the eyes of the MC and to him, nearly everything he does is good because they have a crush on each other.

But honestly? The relationship isn't the prime focus of this novel, though it's only just a little behind the side-characters portion.

Now, The MC and ML's relationship: (This part is always added to analyze how healthy a relationship is) :

They have a crush on each other. What else can I say?

Oh. It is clear that they have a healthy basis for their relationship.

The ML first becomes more interested in the MC because of how honest and pure-hearted he is. He also makes a twist and saves some ghosts from the MC's very helpful hands (HAHAHA).

The MC, on the other hand, has a crush on him to begin with and gradually fell more and more in love with him with every nice little gesture he does, like running 10 hours non-stop just to catch up to him, or carrying him to bed when he's sleepy.

What can I say? They're really sweet.

(although also I'm gobsmacked and laughing my guts out, because man. The ML is an exorcist and the MC is a teacher teaching ghosts. And their first meeting ended with the agreement: "Agree to disagree, yeah?" "Yep." Then, they proceeded to try to convince the other of their believes up till the official "Crush" develops).

Overall:

Sweet, BL couple with diligent teacher and interested love interest helping him out with classes at every turn.

Endearing class that will leave you with a bitter-sweet feeling when the classes finally end.

You'll be left wanting for more, not because it's not good enough, but because it's too good, and there is not enough of it.

As for -0.5:

    • Okay. So, the thing is, this novel is built on the premise of a 'Short Run, Going out with a Bang!" kind of idea. You can also say all those strengths are only harnessed precisely because of its short run, but there are a few points I like to add, just to make this review a bit more objective: The limitation of the 1st Person POV: The author was always adding long author's comments to elaborate on the subtle hinting of some events.

It's not that I don't understand it, because the MC's headspace does twist everything into sciency logic, but I (not say disliked) found it a bit testy how much they added to the authors' comments to elaborate the things subtly edged at in the main story. You can always argue that I can just skip it, but here's the thing -- There're other things too besides the explanations.

Ya. Not sure if the translations actually translated that part. There's good and bad, since their funny prodding at the characters make it all the more hilarious too, but for some parts, like the ML's POV regarding the MC, I just really wished it was included as part of the main text.
    • The romance: It's not too developed, as said. If more runtime was given, I'm sure we could have seen a greater deepening of their feelings, but for now, just short and sweet is good too :)
    • The Runtime: Yes, this is a problem. It's not just a problem in itself, but also a problem in how it ended off things. We have 20 some students! Only 5/6 are gone through! I would have loved to see more!

Right now as it is, you can say that it is perfect because we've gone through all kinds of life and deaths, but I think it's a pity the author hasn't made use of the potential in this story and try to go for more with the other students. It could be because some jjwxc novels are quite hectic, requiring an update per day or so. In any case, I think if more time was given to the author, they might have been able to come up with more to show us with those 20 other students.

That would have made the ending,
      Spoiler

where all the students happily bid goodbye to this world

(except the students we all know and love, that is!)

      [collapse]
      much more moving.
Still, those are just a few minor complaints I have.

In the future, I look forward to writing fanfictions of these two.

But for now, I'll contend with several re-reads of this novel :) Yes, it'll be in my re-read list too!

I just finished MTLing this work and I must say that I am not disappointed at all! This was such a nice light and relatively short read.

It was not very graphic or horror heavy, since it leaned more towards a comedic undertone, so if you don't really like heavy horror you can still enjoy this story.

I really loved the MCs interactions with all the ghosts lmao.

Overall I recommend this story if you want something light, funny, sweet, and with no dog-blood drama at all. ♡

Such a refreshing MC. So reliable. He honestly thinks the ghosts around him are alive and he doesn't realize how powerful he is. Cute! ≧∇≦ He deals with the ghosts so casually and now a lot of them fear him. Even the ML is shocked.

I laughed as I was reading some chapters at 3:00 in the morning.

I'm not very pro-institution, pro-government, and have plenty of critiques against Marxism. But that didn't stop me from enjoying the relentlessly law-abiding MC's perspective. And honestly, he's right. How can you pursue the concept of freedom if you're not politically literate? He's got me convinced that I should re-educate myself on local politics. Anyways, each chapter was hilariously written, and I didn't find his obstinacy obnoxious at all. It was one punch-line after the other.

I liked how he viewed his own sexuality. The epitome of self-acceptance and self-care lmao. Also... more>> have to praise how MC treated female characters as friends, instead of rivals like so many danmei does. My favourite thing about this story though, was that despite the central theme being about self-righteousness, it wasn't overly preachy. Rather, the story argued for empathy and seeing things through different lenses, even the perspectives of antagonistic ghosts. <<less

Definitely a GOOD novel. With or without BL, this is awesome.

When I first saw the tags, I was confused because most MCs in ghost novels aren't OP and strong from the start...

but the MC's righteousness and purity... too OP.

... more>> The story is really funny for readers, despite the fact that no one's laughing in the novel. Bless comedic undertone. I sometimes felt pity for the ghosts... quite unusual for a ghost novel. I read this in the middle of the night and even then, the MC didn't let me feel scared.

The MC is overpowered and naive, but also righteous and a good guy. He's really cute and wants the best for his students. Reading about the MC steamrolling everyone unknowingly is too fun. The ML initially seems like the cold stoic daoist master type, but he's actually a dork. The romance isn't really apparent for most of the novel; at most there were small hints. I feel like most of the romance is shown at the end, mostly in the extras.

The characters are fun, and the writing is brilliant. The ending felt early to me, but it was a good ending, and the author did pretty much wrap up everything. <<less

I saw someone gave this a low rating because they said "I felt the MC couldn't actually exist. The author created him and his personnality to give the comic tone to the story." and yes, that's exactly it. You can see the main character's personality is going to be like this from the synopsis. That's what made it funny, but I guess it's not everyone's type of humour. MC is naive and gullible when it comes to believing in ghosts but as someone who hates s*upid protagonists I didn't mind... more>> the MC. It's fiction and relatively short, don't think too much about the logic.

The story is almost entirely warm-hearted except for the gruesome deaths of the ghosts.

Entertaining and worth reading ^^ <<less

I'll give this a 4.5. I definitely recommended this especially for those who just finished reading a sad or angsty novel to put your heart at ease!

Nice well written comedy story! The plot is simple but all characters are lovable! All the ghosts were cute and have a bit sad backstories. MC is such a smarty pants and dumb at the same time, he's not the type 'to see is to believe' but rather firmly holding to his own principles. So even if he sees paranormals thingys, he'll rather think... more>> that it was a prank or something, which makes his actions both hilarious and annoying. ML's POV is great! It was hilarious as well and he's very understanding and caring about the MC.

Spoiler

But sadly the MC is OP so ML's efforts are quite useless haha

My favorite parts was

Spoiler

ML is low key seducing MC and his interrupted confessions. It was funny and cute

One of the best stories I have read on NU.

The story flow is great, the translation is excellent. All characters shine in their respective roles.

The MC is a morally upright and hard working individual. The reason why he believes in hard work and perseverance is explained. His beliefs are firm. His kindness and understanding make you love him. The ML thinks the MC is an idiot at first but is blown away when he sees the results of MC's kindness and beliefs. ML sets aside his pride and learns from... more>> MC that not everything is black and white. The extras are icing on the cake and round up the story nicely.

The bus driver is funny, Principal Zang moves you emotionally, the ghosts are fierce yet pitiful. MC's friend and ML's shifu are great. MC's description of the day his parents died made me wanna hug him. Poor baby!

Kudos to the author and translator for this hidden gem.

A fantastic read. Don't miss this. <<less

Short, sweet and concise. A good read even if you're slightly afraid of horror since the interaction between MC & ML + MC's humorous personality will help distract you. You may even feel inspired at the end of the novel due to MC's strong and unwavering righteous heart. (Or at least I did ?). The translation was also pretty well done.

This is absolutely one of the best novel I ever read. It's short but everything is written nicely, the ending also satisfying.

It's a must read if you like horror mixed with comedy. The characters are all pleasant, they have their own unique character.

The story have a nice flow, neatly written and everything is explained clearly, the extra chapters are great, it's so fun reading this until the end.

It made me want to read more about them but everything is wrapped up nicely that even when there's no more chapter in... more>> the future then it's alright because I know how MC future will be like without the author writing another story.

This novel is GREAT!

Even the horror bit of it was not too scary (for someone who dislike horror), the romance was also cute, but the best part of this novel was the plot.

It was super interesting and kept you wanting to read more, one of the rare novels where the side characters are actually quite interesting and is not only there to complete the novel.

The MC and ML are both OP, so there's no "damsel in distress" or power inequality between the two, which is what I like about it.... more>> Sometimes I see MLs of other novels being dominant as fk and do their own thing "for the MC's sake" which gets annoying, but in here, the MC is a badass so both pair helps each other out (the ML even feels like he need to learn more from the MC lol)

Spoiler

When MC found out ghost were real and start asking questions about ghost transport, I cracked up lmaoo:

"So ghosts can't teleport. Or is it only ghosts like you who are attached to some physical object who are subject to that restriction?"

"At what speed? How long would it take to get from China to the United States?"

"And if it's an international flight? There are time differences. If it's night on one side and noon on the other, will they be harmed by the sun?"

So many 5 stars reviews... Well don't hate on me, I didn't like the story.

I felt the MC couldn't actually exist. The author created him and his personnality to give the comic tone to the story. Everything they wrote rest on the MC's personnality, he leads the story. But while reading, I only thought, it's not funny, it's impossible. I guess the MC is too much of a caricature, not fleshed out sufficiantly for me to believe.

It was simply a miss for me, but I can understand that a lot... more>> of people loved it. If you let yourself believe in the MC, his journey is a funny one. <<less

This novel is hilarious and creative. It's like a breath of fresh air. I laughed so much, I'm afraid my face will get wrinkles.

The writing is excellent. The author's humour is just right up my alley, and the story also satisfies my horror-loving aspect. Honestly, this is one of the most entertaining story I've read in a long while and it left me a very strong impression.

The MC is a very good and upright teacher, and (without his knowledge) he's super OP. His mind, as a materialist and science believer,... more>> is incredibly strong. Although I know nothing about the theories he'd mentioned, I am somehow convinced, lol. He is definitely someone who was born to be a big man.

The interactions between him and his ghost students are both funny and heartwarming. The backstories of each ghost are tragic, and I am really glad that someone can eventually help them go to a better place. Seriously, the story itself doesn't need any romance. It can just goes on like this for another two to three hundred chapters, and I'll still be more than happy to read it (the ML is very cute, though).

I truly love the concept that if you have a clear conscience and a righteous heart, there's no need to fear ghosts or gods. It's really nice. I enjoyed it so much; I can't put it down while reading, and actually ended up reading it nonstop, despite lacking sleep. I can't compliment the story and the author enough. <<less

Even if you don't like horror genre, you should totally give this book a try. It's less horror and more comedy plus heart-warming. You might actually like other horror stories after reading this book.

Pros:

1. The first thing that attracted me is definitely the writing style, particularly the humor of the author. If you have read even just 10 Chinese web novels, BL or not BL, then you might have noticed the writing style to be similar in so many of them. But the author of this book has a unique... more>> writing style, unlike any other Chinese novels. I was instantly hooked.

2. MC is such a darling. He is....... really something. ML is also the same, a darling. Now lets compare MC and ML of this novel to those of other novels. Most of the novels have this pattern: meek shou x black-bellied gong, playful shou x cold gong, feminine shou x masculine gong, and wolf shou x tiger gong. Just think about any recent BL novel you have read and most of them would fall under one of them. Its like authors have no imagination whatsoever. But this novel is a gem. Both MC and ML don't fall under any of the cliche category. They are their own kind. And what I am happy about is that they both are extremely helpful, kind, generous and everything good. You've probably never read a Chinese BL novel where both MC and ML are righteous to their bones (I am not talking about hen-pecked husbands who help people because their lover wants to help) except for a few like "Mo Dao Zu Shi", "The Husky and His White Cat Shizun", "Little Mushroom", etc. This is also the reason I love the lead characters very much; they are not cliche and they are lovable.

3. The book is very funny. I can never hate a book if it gave me a few laughs. And this book either made me smile throughout the chapters like a lunatic or had me hollering till my stomach hurt. How am I supposed to not love this book?

4. There are basically no plot holes. May be because the book is short (it saddens me), there is really no place for plotholes to exist. Everything comes together by the end of the novel. There are even five extras that are written in ML's perspective and a ghost's perspective to shed light on some situations which wasn't clear from MC's point of view.

5. Side characters are really amazing. There aren't many and they all have such distinct features and personalities that it is hard to forget them. They are really well-written and add funny or sad moments to the story making me like the novel even more.

6. The story itself is outstanding. It's like a cross of Natsume Yuujinchou and Assassination Classroom. Just imagine an extremely (I mean really extremely) upright citizen turned teacher who thinks ghosts don't exist meets a lot of ghosts like Natsume and has to teach them like Koro-sensei. Of course, the end result would be amazing.

Conclusion

Read the book. Don't put it on a hold. The book is so damn good that it deserves to be read by a lot of people. <<less

This story is cute, extremely well-translated, and HILARIOUS. Intense patriotism and nonsensically OP main characters are usually things that annoy me, but Teacher Shen is such a well-meaning dumbass of a character that it was barely irritating at all. It starts kind of boring but picks up the pace quickly after the exposition dump in the first chapter, so stick with it! I was almost crying laughing at both elevator scenes.

The romance elements are pretty cute, if minimal, and the interactions between Teacher Shen and the students are absolute gold.... more>> They get surprisingly heartfelt in a few places, as well.

All in all, highly recommended :) <<less
