An ordinary young man on earth, Xia Feng, traveled to a world of sword and magic, and took the body of Lucien Evans, another ordinary young man.

Seemingly this was a world of traditional western fantasy, yet he discovered the astonishing similarities between the earth and this world, and between science and the so-called arcane magic…

“Knowledge is power”? Soul, magic, quantum, Theory of Relativity, cognitive world, music and real world……

What was the true nature of that world?

I loved this novel. The only reason that I bothered to write this review is because of those who compare this novel and LotM. Yes its true that they have the same author but come on man, he have already finished this before writing LotM. What youre doing is like comparing Kobe pre-drop and Kobe after winning 5 championships. Of course the later was the better one of the two. Did you get how s*upid you looked? Don't get me wrong, I also think LotM was the better novel than... more>> ToMA. He has since improved his writing skills as writer after he finished ToMA and that improvement was LotM. <<less

Nice story, I dont understand why people that give 1 star rating only read just few chapter, like 5 chapters or 20 chapters, and insult everything, not only this novel. That was disgusting

If you haven't read Lord of the Mysteries before trying this, go read that masterpiece first. Since this novel has some twist and concepts that are kinda similar to LotM, it's best to experience those in the better novel first. And after reading LotM, lessen your expectations for this by about half.

It's my favorite novel. This might not be a novel for beginners as they desire the gaudy sword fights and system novels. This is a gem of Chinese novel I for one didn't like physics when I was studying after reading this it changed my perspective of physics and the amount of dedication required to weave the story the way the author did made me a fan of him. As for the story it paces the adventures and relaxation perfectly, there is no clichés, a well liked and charismatic female... more>> lead. Most of all the magic community fills the void in our heart better than Harry Potter world for me magical congress and Allyn will be dearest to my heart. And I have learned many things from this novel that rarely ever happens in a novel <<less

The author was too ambitious writing this. I mean good idea, but poor execution of the story.

MC becomes famous composer, an adept magician, and a historian in a quite short time (in the story's timeframe) despite starting from an illiterate level. Of course he is a transmigrated chinese high schooler and has library in the head, but his study shedule is tight as Patriach Reliance buthole.

The logic fells broken and shallow, especially when the author states that MC must become a famous musician to safely travel around the world, as... more>> a cover for his magical identity. Well, this gets proved otherwise pretty fast. It's ridiculous when he repeatedly writes that MC name is common and his look ordinary. Like how the hell they won't recognize him if anywhere he goes, he is the youngest and the shiniest star girl.

The good things are backstory and setting of the world. The story takes place in alternate era of classical music before the industrial revolution with fantasy elements where church, mages and demons mingle.

The humans magic system is common, but heavily based on knowledge rather than magic talent or unique abilities. All magicians seems too fetishize theoretical knowledge, not the real strength.

There were some great assassinations. I regret that the author didn't include more of this, like in his other novel Lord of the Mysteries.

I'm dropping it at magical school arc becouse it is quite boring. Author precisely describes writing scientific papres rather than focusing on magical practice, experiments, and other more interesting features of uni life. I find it annoying that MC copies a lot of stuff straight from Earthen books just to fame up and get credits. He should at least process his knowledge to make something novel, but this is a rarity so far. <<less

At best this is 3.5 stars, I only read this because I enjoyed the author's other book, Lord of The Mysteries.

This novel is nowhere near as good on multiple levels. I saw the score difference between the two on here but decided to pay it no mind, but there is a reason for this.

I wont go into detail in this review since im tired of writing so much about stories that dont deserve it but

  1. The MC fails on multiple levels, he is not smart, makes a good amount of questionable decisions and he is basically like those "I reincarnated as hospital tr*sh can" Japanese light novel MC's.
  2. The majority of the characters in this novel give you no reason to care for them and most of them show up only to be given the briefest of appearances later.
  3. The MC has damn near every power in the book, he has a ton of powerful items and advantages just like a cultivation novel and in the end, mostly relies on the same few magic items he got when he was weaker
  4. The author hands the MC so many op items that he never really ends up using more than once. The fight scenes really aren't done that well
  5. This novel is like reading a middle school/high schooler trying to impress you by throwing nothing but music/science/and math terms at you
  6. 70% of the text in this story is just the author throwing music/science theories at you with no real plot.
  7. You can often skip most of a lot of chapters without missing anything since it will just be nothing about theories that dont move the plot anywhere, the only thing that moves the plot forward in most of the chapters are just a few sentences. The rest is filler
  8. Someone mentioned it falls off after he leaves his hometown, it does, but it didn't really have far to fall

I was actually suprised that I enjoyed this. Usually prefer more adventure type stories but the world is engaging and the characters to a lesser extent.

I was especially glad that when the author tried to mix science with magic he didnt just say some random sh*t and add scientific jargon to try and confuse you into believing it like other novels that try using science do.

Uses basic science with a believable connection to a magic system which was actually a big part of my enjoyment so far.

Only part holding the... more>> story back so far is meaningful plot developments and satisfying action sequences (there are some tho, im only on c42 atm also).

Otherwise definitely worth getting lost in.

Recommend. <<less

Basically religion vs science set in historic age + real sorcerers and divine magic. Evans X starts as a musician, then into a sorcerer and arcanist. He borrows the knowledge from Earth which is waaaaay too advanced. Their experiments are quite vague like the process of knowing an element's atomic mass (is it through spectroscopy, vibration frequency, % volume?).

It will pretty badass if he introduces E=mc^2.

I honestly agree that the first few chapters have such random conversations to most stories info dumps, but if you move past that, you'll get a really nice story about scientific magic and the MC who's earth science helps him face slap some people and eventually become a great wizard.

Honestly pretty good. It is the closest thing to a western fantasy novel I have ever seen translated from chinese. It has slow, but vast, world building. It has an MC that is believable, maybe a little paranoid, but otherwise quite good. It is dark, sometimes, but still a world to fantasise about.

First time making review,

Just read this novel without much research on it and unexpectedly I really like it. It has moments that it is similar to most novel but opposite of it. The first part remind me of release that witch that he woke up and about to see a witch to get mu*dered but unlike that novel, MC just a peasant and the witch get opposite treatment than that novel. It has a cheat but just a passive cheat that book from previous world and copy book from... more>> this world. Overall MC need to work by himself to protect himself. He got the witch inheritance and the story began for him to become a able sorcerer.

Story are fine for me and some minor plot convenience are ok for me. The MC is acceptable and not annoying for me. Other characters mentioned a bit but MC work alone.

Currently he is dangling with musical theme and this remind me of Nodame cantabile as I grew my love on classical because of that Manga. I can pretty much sure that author only know little about classical due to his choice of famous song. I hope he could continue on musical and conquer the world through music. I really hope there a good novel that are like this but have good musical background. <<less

I had initially high expectations being this the Lord of Mysteries author and having an interesting concept of magic being influenced by science. That being said, the story starts off well and even does a decent job explaining some of the basic theories of science and the impact those have on the magic. Unfortunately, as the story goes on, the book sounds more like you are reading out of your science history textbook, as it dwells on the science theory instead of the actual plot. Then forgets to connect that... more>> back to the magic system itself. The story has just so many flaws and abstract rules with its magic system, that it just ends up as a soft magic system.

Nevertheless, I still enjoyed reading the start of the novel, it was amusing reading about the MC teaching science to people and influencing the world with his knowledge. <<less

Intelligent MC who has access to modern info while in a magic + western religion medieval (ish) fantasy world. The MC does make some mistakes early on but he always learns from them within 1-2 chapters.

Romance: yes, at first it's just the MC writing letters to them and otherwise focusing on his own tasks/research. However, in around chapter 500 they get together and the MC decides to be more conservative in his magical advancements because he has someone else to think of now which really sucks away the fun of... more>> magical exploration in this novel.

Dropped because of the romance. <<less

This is a 3rd story written by "Cuttlefish That Loves Diving" that I've read and for the most part I liked it. (Completed main story and some side stories, only one side story left)

IMHO he is one of the best web authors at world-building, creating power systems, etc.

But regardless of that this story still has a few issues.

One of them getting too technical in explaining stuff, usually it's not a big issue but when he starts to explain quantum physics using paragraphs on paragraphs of something that's either straight... more>> from some scientific journals or wiki pages, it can get a tad bit tedious to read. And while it's great for world-building, it's not so great for storytelling.

Another issue is the lack cluster culmination to the story with so many story threads left unsolved. By the end there is a lot of stuff going on in the world with a lot of factions and powerful characters and the ending completely ignores a lot of that even some of the major stuff, and what it doesn't ignore it just felt like a lackluster conclusion.

Talking about loose threads, there were dozens of chapters introducing a character in his daily life and experiences, and I thought it would lead to something but the story ended without him playing any role in the story whatsoever. Why did we read about some normal ass dude for dozens of chapters and then just end the story without him doing anything ?

His "Cheat" ability in this world never got explained properly either, we got an explanation but it was just a random sentence of the protagonist guessing at the very end which felt like authors attept at coming up with something at that moment instead of something he planned from the beginning.

And in fact in my opinion I think that cheat ability took away from the story because instead of him doing something achieving things on his own the library just gave him the answers, which in turn made it feel like the protagonist was way less capable and only being where he was in the story thanks to unexplained random cheat.

Anyways even though I ranted a lot (and there were still a few things I didn't rant about) I still liked the story, it had great world building with very solid hard-magic system. <<less

I'm not sure if this is the first story the author wrote but the earlier chapters definitely reads like it's a very early attempt. The opening is very awkward and the first arc itself is very shaky in quality. If you can get past that though you'd be pleasantly surprised. As such I advice that you don't listen to any review on here that only managed to read several chapters, high rating or not.

The first arc oddly enough is mostly about music, wherein the MC uses his brain library from... more>> earth and "repurposes" famous classical masterpieces as his own work. It's sort of interesting story-wise but it's mostly boring tbh. The story really picks up when he leaves the first city and sheds his "musician" identity and focuses on his sorcery. Then it gets VERY interesting. I suggest you read up to that point to see if you'll like this novel before giving up on it. <<less

Fell short [B-].

I can tell that this is Cuttlefish That Love Diving earliest work, because it wasn't that good.
First quarter of the novel (early 200s), I felt that there was some huge potential in the making here but it just didn't met my expectations subsequently.
One striking problem that I have with this novel is the lack of character depth. There are literally almost no one you can latch onto or are interesting enough, the MC just barely makes the cut and even then, you won't feel excited or... more>> anticipated in any of the other characters appearances in the novel. Yes, including the FMC (probably only like 5 chapters max enjoyable). This make it less immersive and lacklustre. This is like an unpolished mixture of Martial Arts Master (in terms of romance) and Lord of the Mysteries. The romance here is half-baked and you can see how the author uses certain elements as a draft for the later better romance work in MAM. You can also notice similar concepts and ideas being way more developed in LOTM, while here, it just seems unrefined and draft-like.
In short, its like the blueprint for the good romance in MAM and the top-tier world-building in LOTM.
It was unique that it involves magical science (aka arcana), and was interesting at some points. However, character development was horrendous and it was just mainly him using his knowledge from his previous world.

This is my 3rd series read by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving after LOTM and MAM.
It wasn't horrible, but it was kinda unremarkable.
Thanks for the work author and translator.

Undeniably, a really good novel. Good characters, good world building, good narrative... It does feel a bit like an experimental novel for Cuttlefish That Loves Diving, but that is not something bad, in fact, isn't experimenting with his early novels what created the great Lord of the Mysteries?

Really high quality, recommended.

I had to return to write this review even tho I finished this novel before the last 2 books I read and it still bugging my mind even now for only one thing this author is just a genius, no filler, no chapter without you getting your adrenaline rushing up to your head from excitement and full of science facts that you never heard of, just the amount of searches and effort the author out to put all these scientific theories with a way you find it not boring for... more>> not even one chapter and the best part of this novel is about blown heads 😂 won't talk about spoilers all I can tell you when heads start to blown is when the real fun is starting, so at the end of all this blabbing is that this one is a masterpiece of Chinese novels that after you read it you will start to see all other Chinese novels as average or below average that it can put all other authors to shame with their incompetent so give it a time you won't regret reading it <<less

This is not a review as I have yet to read a good chunk of the story but I am here to tell you about THE BEST way to experience this novel.

I usually listen to all my novels using Text to speech and for this novel there's this one touch that you can add to revolutionize the experience. I play the songs (symphony, piano plays etc.) on Spotify or any music player that Lucien is supposedly playing in the story in the background while listening to story and it... more>> feels mesmerizing. People might say all Lucien does is plagiarize but that is the reason I was able to actually feel the passion behind those words by author.

My layering pattern was music + TTS, music + Text isn't a bad idea either if you know how to focus on text during songs.

Anyway, I'll come back in few days when I am done with novel and update this. <<less

as a chemical engineer who loves to read magic genre novels, I find this novel very interesting because it smoothly integrates magic and science together which is very hard to convey in words, making novels like these few in numbers. I applaud the dedication that the author have on writing this novel as it is both informative and bewitching at the same time.
