The wife is first, the country is second, and the husband is of lesser importance.

All of his life was spent riding a war horse and accomplishing meritorious military services. But what was the result? In the end, he was cast aside once he had served his purpose.

Out of selfishness, he had favored his consort and neglected his wife. Ultimately, the one who stood by his side was the wife that he had neglected for 10 years…

After being reborn, Jing Shao decided to repent and turn over a new leaf…

Standing outside the door while holding a pillow, Jing Shao gazed at the sky. He must first mend his relationship with his wife. Jing Shao formed a fist and knocked on the door, “Jun Qing, I know I was wrong, let me in!”

I'm gonna be honest here, I really think that this novel is pretty damn boring.

Objectively speaking, this is a rather well-written novel, but it is so boring.

This is a bit of a guilty pleasure danmei. What I love the most is a tragic character who (in the 1st chapter, not a spoiler) dies unloved getting doted on and appreciated by the main character after. You get to experience more of the establishing of the relationship WITH romantic context rather than the typical danmei love story full of missed connections and misunderstandings. There's plenty to dislike about the brutish nature of the main character and the restrictions of the court politics and sexist undertones but the novelty... more>> of the established relationship setting was exactly what I wanted.

The updates stopped on chap 91, however the translator posts them on patreon!! I don't know if the editor is out but if you want them unedited but translated check their patreon. <<less

Does anyone know about another novel by this author called 君為下? I don't know the English name. But the titles look similar and the print copies are often sold together. I can't read very much Chinese so I can't read the description for myself but I was very curious if this book was a sequel or set in the same universe or something??

Anyway, as for TWF, it is by far the most consensual and mutual bl relationship I've read in a danmei novel so far that has s*x scenes. (MDZS... more>> loses a few points for never discussing WWX's CNC kink and for the first kiss scene, but also because the characters don't get together until the end we don't see as much of their daily lives.)

This book is full on fluff and mutual respect and deep love. I like it because the audience can clearly see both characters falling for each other and none of it feels forced or unbalanced. There's a lot of talk about high society etiquette that can be quite dry but things do become more exciting later on. <<less

It's a decent read. The MC and the ML are pretty likable characters and bonus points for having the same POV. It's pretty much the rebirth plot- making things better and loving the one who I ignored last birth. No plot twists to be expected here. This novel is completely drama based and is mostly driven on how the MC solves problems caused due to his family and how he makes up to he ML in this life.

This is about "a Second Chance"

When Cheng Wang, the handsome prince who tries his best to fix all his mistakes to his beautifully handsome wife Jung Qin.

Jung Qing is a whole package...
He got the look, a white and smooth skin, a good heart, smart and everything....

Cheng Wang is handsome and got a second chance

DID I CRIED ?
NO

DID I LAUGH ?
YES (extra chapter only)

I love the extra chapter,
it was so fun and I laugh a couple time...
For me personally it will be more complete to add more humor in the novel as funny as the extra chapter
I know this is not a comedy novel, but the author has a comedian talent...
Why don't you explore it more in that aspect

NOTE:
There is a audio drama, just give it a try..... you won't regret it

MC & ML balance out each other's characters. They are both strong in their own way and always did their best to work things out be it regarding life or love. Storyline is easy to understand & light to read.

I love this novel, particularly the interaction between ML and the MC. The MC dotes and respects the ML so much that I feel my teeth aching from the sweetness?...i never get bored/tired reading the chapters, already translated, repeatedly while I wait for the next chapter release.

It's been a while since I've read this but I figured it would be a bit of a disservice to not give it even a short review, just to get my thoughts out.

Overall, it's a decent novel which features our MC Jing Shao and his male partner, Mu Hanzhang. The romance isn't so overwhelming, and the palace intrigue and court politics takes up much more of the novel than the former does; but it's not so hard to follow. Rather, it's simplified for its readers at times. Not that I'm... more>> complaining about all that jazz. I actually enjoyed it pretty well, all things considered. The plot, and how it flows as the chapters progressed, was what kept me *figuratively* turning the page. The sweet moments between JS and MZH were more like dessert after an entertaining round of palace drama.

If I had any gripes with the story— or, rather, our main couple, it would be this.

Spoiler

IIRC, JS coerces MHZ into s*x somewhere down the line, when their relationship has been stabilized (I think it was after the war). JS apparently makes up for it, but I just thought that the whole interaction was so out of the blue; everything was going well.

Reading the comments in CG, I saw that a lot of people didn't like what JS did regardless, and I wouldn't fault them or anyone for it.

If you want a relatively short but entertaining read, maybe you should give QWS a try. <<less

I wouldn't say that this novel is perfect, but it has a few strong sides, which makes it deserving of a high rating.

First of all, I liked that the characters actually acted as if they were from ancient times, especially the ML. Sometimes it seemed a bit annoying that he was so obedient to rules even when, deep down, he didn't want to be. At the beginning, he stayed silent. It looked like he had no backbone, but that was just how he was raised. His status and laws didn't... more>> give him a choice. I loved that, with MC's help, he began to be more independent and sounded out his opinions. He was so clever and talented that it would be cruel to keep him confined in a house.

I also liked that because MC was reborn, the course of history changed. He used information from his previous life to change some unfavorable situations that affected not only his life but also the development of the whole story. Sometimes in those kinds of stories, characters are reborn, but the flow of the story doesn't change, which doesn't look accurate.

Spoiler

The r*pe victim acted as one. Despite the fact that MC changed his behavior and was gentle, and despite the fact that he was a wife and, by the rules, should have obeyed every whim of his husband, he still feared physical intimacy and tensed every time MC touched him. It lasted quite a while, which was more believable than when victims act as if nothing happened the next day. R*pe is a disgusting crime that affects the victim in various ways, so I hate when authors downplay it.

[collapse]

Spoiler

I thought it was nice that even though MC and ML were married in both lives, MC fell in love with ML only in a second life. Because MC only paid attention to ML and truly got to know him only in second life. He felt gratitude for his courage and loyalty in past life but fell in love with ML because of who he truly was, not for his actions in past life

[collapse]

There were interesting side characters who made the story more wholesome. Although I would like to read more about them. Some characters disappeared in the middle of the story. I think they had more potential, and it would be better if the author wrote more about them.

Overall, the story is good; it has an interesting plot; the pace of story telling is fast; all the problems are resolved quickly, and things aren't dragged out; there is no angst; there are a lot of romantic moments. I think it's worth reading. <<less

phenomenal read filled with palace intrigue and politics!

a man full of regrets and bad memories is given a second chance to make things right; the third prince jingshao experiences a rebirth at a time when he is freshly married to his male wife. In his first life, he resents his wife, but after experiencing his wife's devotion and loyalty even in death, he is determined to make things right!

i absolutely loved this book. It had just the right amount of drama to keep the story interesting, and unlike other danmei... more>> gongs, he is doting and extremely loveable.

4.4 is too low for a rating, but I understand because sometimes the story feels too drawn out. At times like that I skim and all is well. <<less

Ok before I start, there might be some inconsistencies since It’s been a while I read this.

For those who rated one in this novel,

While I agree that the MC definitely had issues mainly pertaining to his hot temper and was an abusive and neglective husband to ML and his concubines for the most part, they seem to be forgetting that aside from the ML these victims weren’t entirely all that innocent either.

Let’s start with the side consort.

Spoiler

His side consort for one acted as a spy on her father’s the minister of war’s behalf. She constantly let loose about vital information pertaining to her husband’s household. Using this information as a foothold the Minister tried bring the promising prince under his influence. If he succeeded then his daughter could have potentially become the future empress. Clearly she wasn’t satisfied with the side consort position and had ambitions to rise up to become the main princess consort and in her mind future empress. So yeah she’s not that innocent.

[collapse]

The concubines
Spoiler

One of the concubines was literally gifted to him by his eldest brother to spy on him and report back to him about his every movement. The ideal probably would have been for her to become favored long enough so she could give out incriminating information about the MC to her boss in exchange for whatever he promised her. The fact she was able to divorce and flee from the MC’s mansion in itself is extremely suspicious. Although we aren’t given a clear definition of her background, judging from her lowly stature as a concubine she probably didn’t come from an influential family unlike the side consort. Meaning she had to have someone else bail her out. No doubt the prince was responsible for it and was most likely a planned action from the start. She probably could have been involved in the MC’s demise.

[collapse]

Ancient court politics were far from simple. Each family had their own agendas. While women in that timeline were restrained by their male counterparts (and still are in some parts of the world) they weren’t entirely powerless either. In fact, they held a lot more influence than people at that time gave them credit for. Labeling them simply as victims is really an injustice and insult to them and to the many merits they’ve achieved throughout history.

Lets put this in perspective if every woman was as frail, weak, submissive, domestic, and etc. Whatever else nonsense those idiot men think of them to be how the hell would they be able to withstand the life threatening path of childbirth? Women at the time had to constantly live with looming fear of death from childbirth from the moment they are married unlike men who for the most part only had to only worry about not doing anything s*upid that could cost then their lives. Not giving birth was not an option back then mostly due to social pressures.

So yeah, give them more credit will you.

However, it’s true that women have suffered many injustices simply because they were considered the inferior s*x. They were robbed of many opportunities and privileges that their male counterparts enjoyed. They were forcibly suppressed and subjugated to humiliation whenever it pleased others.

These things shouldn’t be ignored and be properly addressed. But that doesn’t mean we should ignore the achievements and merits they struggled to fight for. They also deserve recognition in their own right. These women deserve more than to be remembered than as simple victims to a patriarchal society of that time. <<less

*Disclaimer, this is all just my opinion, I do see how others might really love this story, but for me it's a solid 2.5 stars.

I agree with another reviewer, this novel is trying to be too many types of story, but it's just not working.

For a comedy, /shameless wife simping story, there is too much fighting and palace intrigue.

... more>> For a drama/royal intrigue, the comedy bits with the MC shamelessness seems out of place.

If it's a comedy, the MC being basically a meathead with not much in the brains department makes sense. For a palace intrigue drama, with him being so hot headed I'm surprised he lived until 20. I also started to dislike the MC after chapter 80 or so. He becomes forceful and shamless with the MC, not sweet like the first volume

ML is ok I guess. The author makes him a little black bellied and scheming at times and then other times makes him kind and generous. This would be okay but I don't think it's written well, and makes the character design inconsistent.

By the third volume I was pretty bored by the story, but had invested so much into it that I finished it.

I love redemption stories, and really wanted to love this one. I think the issue for me is the palace intrigue was too boring. The manhua has been translated some and I recommend it only to see how pretty the outfits are, otherwise it cuts out all the good bits 😏 and the flow is choppy in some places. <<less

★★★★★ [4.5/5 stars]

The synopsis of this novel is actually what drew me in to pick this up. I love the concept of being reborn, carrying a regretful and remorseful heart from the tragic first life he had lived and having the chance to literally start all over again, correct every mistakes he did and cherish the person who had been by his side but chose to neglect. I was already hooked from the very first chapter.

Aside from the political intrigue that I always loved, what I really love to see... more>> is how an as*hole character redeemed himself. Jing Shao/Wang Ye (MC) was truly an as*hole in the first life. He was the third son of the emperor who was forced in this marriage with Jun Qing/Wang Fei (ML) by the empress in order to cut off his chance for the throne. He was hot-tempered, reckless and short-minded who vented his anger to his Wang Fei and chose to mistreat him, not knowing that in the end when he was blamed for the set of crimes he didn't commit, when almost everyone pointed fingers at him, the only person who stayed by his side was exactly the person he neglected for 10 years. After being reborn, he devoted himself to his Wang Fei and really did everything to protect him. I am actually weak to doting and devoted lovers because those characters always makes my heart soft and I was actually glad that the author didn't really 'fleshed out' that as*hole version of Jing Shao from the first life because I would have really hated him. Mentioning only the tidbits of his attitude in the past life was already making me so mad. Anyway, I love the him in the second life and his dynamic with his Wang Fei. So much love and trust between each other were the strong foundation of their relationship. Jun Qing deserved the best in the world! He's so smart and gentle and despite having a difficult life with his family, he maintained his pure heart. That's why I was fuming when this beautiful soul was mistreated so badly by his husband in the past life. I was also glad that he finally had the chance to flaunt his cleverness in front of everyone. He has this calm and rational mind, which complements to his husband's recklessness and bravery. They have opposite personalities, which filled up their differences but they never clashed. I love that about them. Oh, I also loved the relationship between Jing Shao and his brother Jing Chen. I rarely see royal siblings in historical novels who sincerely care and love each other, without the touch of betrayals usually seen with the imperial princes who are seeking for the throne. Totally recommend this novel. The author is the same one who wrote White Cat's Divine Scratching Post, which I also adored so much. If reading the novel's synopsis didn't pique your interest, I really don't know what's wrong with you. This might not be the best novel for everyone, but this is definitely worth it. I also love the fluffiness of extra chapters and also recommend you to read that. <<less

The title of this suggests a lot what's gonna be inside the novel, with lots of schemes.✨_✨

MC (top) was straight forward man. What he felt would just express that. Due to regrets from his past life after being reborn he pampered his wife then eventually fell in love with him. ML (bottom) was perfect match for MC. He was clam and rational. Mutual understanding between those two was good. What one lacked other had everything to fulfill that.|*^*|

About ML's forcing MC; to be clear forcing someone is absolutely not right... more>> but what's important is to regret, knowing ur wrong and mend it & if the victim is willing to forgive what other has to say. About others who wronged ML in his previous & present life, just to say they did evil, they got evil. O (╯□╰) o

Other side character couple was good. About MC's brother, his story was in the extra & to my premonition he was the bottom. Lol (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Well, it was sweet and fluffy in the 1st volume, then as follows in 2nd & 3rd volume there was lots of plots, schemes, & tensions. So it will catch your attention if you give it a try!! இ﹏இ <<less

I just have to say I love the left protectorate general and I don't know how he puts up with the rest of the airheads in the army, but he's a saint for doing it. I would read a spin-off series just of what thoughts go through his head, lol.

Before I read the novel, I was reading the manhua, which I enjoyed, but the level of detail in the novel is way higher, and more quickly persuaded me to like the MC than the manhua did.
