I Raised A Black Dragon

The witch, Eleonora Asil, has fifteen previous convictions.

And the transmigrator, Noah Park, had no intentions of being involved in the novel’s original plot of the dragon beheading the villainess. With that thought in mind, she abandoned her title as The Wicked Witch and sought to live a long and peaceful life.

So she heads down to the countryside wrought with deep remorse for all her misdeeds. And all should be happy… or she thought.

“Please raise me!”

And so it would seem that she stumbled upon the heroine’s pet dragon — the black-haired kid that would turn ballistic and obsessive later on — imprinted the villainess as his mother. And to make matters worse, the male lead suspects her as the prime culprit of stealing the dragon.

“How long should I keep up with you?”

She thought he’d arrest her right away, but seems like the male lead was slowly becoming the dragon’s butler.

“Can I hug you?”

“No.”

“Then… can you hold me?”

The villainess believes that the dragon needs a bit of taming.

‘Oh, male lead, won’t you sign a life contract as a real butler?’

On the surface, this is a halfway wish-fulfillment story where a woman without energy to live (and often outright depression) is aided by her detective quasi-husband and magic quasi-son. Below that there isn't much besides tiptoeing around the tropes of a forceful male lead. Muell the dragon seems to have less personality over time as there's nothing to replace his earlier feral attitude. It's a good thing that the magic is used very little because it's poorly-defined and overpowered.

Good translation, reasonably polished prose.

Being cared for when you're weak, lucking into... more>> having a family - good escapism

Life always managed by others, forceful men who make you keep your guard up - unhealthy fetish

Now that the romance is finally advancing the flaws of the work claw at my eyes. I can understand ML being pushy with a somewhat depressed person who has little energy or interest in living, but that forcefulness doesn't get much better even as the relationship warms. There's always an excuse for the protagonist to be taken care of, and to be pushed around by a male. At this point it's clear that the work is a sequence of situations to justify the ML overstepping MC's boundaries a bit,
Spoiler

and now that emotions are involved he's overstepping boundaries there too.

[collapse]

Spoiler

This is after an arc where the MC had a lot of control over her life and was highly proactive, I'd thought that was character development and a new norm. Nope. I tolerated the fetish when the MC was practically a patient, and when the villain 2ML was being a creep. Now that there's a blatant situation of *another* excuse for MC to act weak and ML is overstepping boundaries with little narrative excuse, or shame, I'm out.

[collapse]

The MC will probably have her proactive moments but I doubt this story can or will change. If there is progress, the author will twist it to fit the earlier status quo. <<less

Strangely overrated. The interactions and plot progression feels forced and no characters are particularly interesting — the main character especially so. The author seems to have forgotten to give her a personality — or rather forgotten that being lazy does not count as having a personality. Translator is great, my favourite part of the novel.

2* turned into 3* just because I couldn’t force myself to read more (so felt bad for rating under).

This novel simply lack's a hook. It's interesting, well written, and well translated, but the story doesn't have anything to keep me coming back. Whenever I finish a chapter, I don't feel anticipation for the next one. Without that hook, this novel devolved into a time sink rather than something I'm invested in.

This novel is very much to my liking. The cute little dragon, the cute relationship between the MC and the ML, the mystery and the investigation. Everything about it piques my interest and keeps me hooked.

Also the translators are doing such a great job, it doesn't even feel translated as if this is the original language of the novel, so, props to them for making this effort.

Thank you for the updates ♡

(Sorry for the bad English)

its not bad, but its just... boring? I don't even know what is wrong with it precisely, except to say that it doesn't grab my interest. the story isn't too interesting, the premise seemed interesting but it just doesn't go anywhere, and the protagonist just gets led around by everyone else and put into crappy situations where she just goes along with it. That aside, the translation quality is perfect. Maybe some people might see something good in this, but this is certainly not something I want to keep reading... more>> despite trying to give it another chance. After reading for a while hoping for the story to get better, I just got tired of it. <<less

I read this because of the child == fluff that too dragon..
Given the high rating I was hoping for fluff, care but I was disappointed.
I dont mind:
- The MC being lazy to the point you cant differentiate her house or garbage, got it,
-she wants a very passive life, ok
-She doesnt have any ambition, ok
-She doesnt want to do anything with the story, ok
-She is s*upid enough to strave herself to the point of malnutrition, questionable
-But somehow she got involved in the... more>> main story by taking egg and aftermath, comical

-But what I dont like is that my fluff ball has trauma of getting abandoned by the MC.
-She is so problematic that she goes into the town[her being transmigrated into the body of dangerous Wanted crimina]with no preparations whatsoever and needs to be save at every turning point by the ml
-Even after her deciding to take the child she takes no accountability at all. She remains just the same
- The ML to the rescue for everything. By the way he is the smart officer who was after the witch but does her housechore after some events and believes only culprit should be punished so remains besides MC knowing she isnt the witch.
Spoiler

What is the character setting? Unrealistic but whatever

[collapse]
-MC is living embodiment of dumb ways to die 101. Without the ML she might have died pretty early.

I was going to read it for the adorable dragon fluff but I am not comfortable to read more 50 chapter just for MC to do something or for her part to be done so that my fluff can come.
Maybe I shouldn't have read this just after reading novel abt a hardworking MC.>^< <<less

tr*sh.

The translation is good at the start but some of the words and phrases get mixed around and become confusing in a few places. That isn't the deal-breaker though.

The characters are sufficiently developed and every action follows a certain logic dictated by their personalities so there is a great flow to the story that becomes immersible and enjoyable quite quickly.

However... there is this one gaping shotgun wound of a plot hole that completely throws this whole thing in the garbage can.

Spoiler

The ex-boyfriend comes back even though she doesn't know him now since she is a different person in someone else's body. He attacks her, stalks her, then tries to sexually assault her. On top of that, he discovers the greatest and most damnable secret of hers which is that she is now unable to use her mana, the kid is a dragon, and the dragon's imprint is incomplete. The heroine's response to all of that...? "Toss him out of my room so I can get some sleep." Right, okay. Eventually she takes him to the Police equivalent of the story where they are both arrested and the male lead comes back into the picture to take her out of jail. Here is the other moment that completely kills the story. The jilted ex-lover/would-be rapist then convinces her quite easily to let him keep in contact with her to hang out under the pretense of teaching her how to use the dragon's magic. EVEN THOUGH there was a clear mention made by the male lead early in the story that once she is fully imprinted, she would automatically understand how to wield dragon magic. She readily agrees. 'Oh yeah you tried to f*ck me against my will when I was weak with the flu and alone, but totally, yeah... lets keep this good thing going even though I don't need your help at all.' What am I even reading anymore? Nope.

[collapse]

Up until the heroine does this wildly out-of-character, nonsensical move the story was fantastic. Everything was seamless, even if some of the translations were confusing or down right wrong (they always say orbs instead of eyes, what's so hard about using the word eyes?) and the plot was moving at the perfect pace.

It is quite obvious that the author wanted to induce some form of triangle love stuff to mix more clichè plot mechanics into the story later. Willfully ignoring the previous plot arrangement concerning the learning of dragon magic being instinctual and not needing any form of teaching or study.

Sorry it took so many words to get my point across, I really hope this helps you decide whether or not to get s**ked in and sucker punched like me, or that you can live with that "plot development" and keep going with the story.

I really want to give this 5 stars, and maybe that's why I dropped it. The whole thing was flawless and enjoyable up to this point so perhaps that's why this one mistake feels so monumental, so betraying. <<less

First of all, the translation was great. No problem at all. Kudos to the translators ?. Second the story is light hearted. It is good and I like the MC a lot. I dont know I just feel comfortable reading her. The baby dragon was also adorable. You can see that he has this inner instinct as a dragon but he listens to the MC well. I can see that he is into a good path. The ML was okay, the story is not yet that far but I can... more>> see him complimenting the MC and baby. <<less

So like, I’ve read the manhwa and some parts of the novel. But tbh, if you all are confused and hating on the FL for being lazy AF, it might be unrealistic to some of you guys but maybe you guys haven’t reached that breaking point to relate to the FL? In my point of view, the FL is more relatable than most FL’s out there. As someone who is really lazy to the point where if I even get a little scratch, I make the excuse of saying it... more>> hurts more than anything to stay in bed for at least a few hours. Sometimes for some people, they get so overworked and tired that want to do nothing for the rest of the day and just lay in bed, sleeping, daydreaming, scrolling through social media. Plus, to a lot of you guys, you may not relate but does that really matter? Hmm? Scrolling through most of the reviews. I feel like a lot of us can definitely relate. Other than that, the whole story is just amazing, the author makes her laziness like a mental illness. It feels like that to me and I feel that on weekends and Fridays.

The ML actually looks like he’s related to Mu, they’re relationship is so whole, FL may have done the yk{very sad 😢} to Mu for the main plot to go on. I think I know why. This is because:
Spoiler

The FL wants the main plot to go on like it normally would because yk, she wouldn’t want to ruin anything for the main plot. But at the same time, she feels too lazy to do a thing and act as a real villain. So she decides to run away and have someone else that could act like a villain. That would happen usually if the main plot has to go on right? That is what the FL is basically thinking of.

[collapse]

FL and ML actually have history too. <<less

If you’re looking for a sign to read this, this is it! Cute baby dragon x lazy mommy x badass daddy.

I started reading this around 2020 before the translators took the big hiatus and just came back to give a review. It baffles me how so many people are still rating it with such low reviews just because the MC is lazy type. It’s literally in the tags, what do you did you expect before reading this? As a someone who’s getting ave 3 hrs of sleep working my ass... more>> off everyday, how I wish to be like MC! I’m living through her. If I ever get transmigrated, I will probably be like her. Letting go of everything and stop trying to struggle in this world of hardship. And as my best boi Oreki would say, its not laziness it’s energy conservation, so give this book a chance! <<less

YALL PLEASE READ IT TILL THE LATEST UPDATE YOU WILL NOT REGRET!!! THE SLOWBURN ANGST IS WORTH IT. I PROMISE YOU

Thank goodness I read the book to a decent extent before reading the reviews. The thing about this book is that its a slowburn. Many people seem to hate the FL cuz shes lazy but honestly its adds to her character. ML caring for her and cleaning up after her while grumbling but knows deep in his heart that if she were to ever get hurt he will hunt... more>> them down.

Their dynamic may seem kinda annoying in the beginning but slowburns are always like that. I think ive reached the halfway point of this novel so I cant really say much but give it a chance. I find myself being annoyed and putting the book down but I still come back because I want to know what happens. Don't read too much into it and just read it as it is.

though I have to say I was confused reading it in the beginning but I understand now LOL <<less

Saw many people talking about how lazy and careless the FL is, but I didn't find it something so displeasing, tbh I found it kind of funny and a little bit refreshing to give it a change of scenario of what we are used to in novels, maybe I didn't find it as annoying because I identify myself with her? Lol idk. Well, it is nice, but everything keeps dragging and you just feel like you need a break from it. The writing is not something that makes you say... more>> "WOW THIS IS SO DIFFERENT", but it is quite nice. The characters are funny, but I have to admit that I took a break from it for a while, I got a bit bored and will go back to reading after I read the updates from the novels I follow the most. <<less

OKAY OKAY OKAY. So this novel is the ONLY reason that I decided to make an account and write a review. I can't even BEGIN to tell you how much I love this novel! Let me tell you first that I've read about I don't know I think 44 isekai novels before this and NOTHING stands out most like this one!

Here's why: (beware SPOILERS!)

  • decent, WHOLESOME, attentive ML! There are sooo many isekai novels out there with the typical "he killed me in the past life but loves me now", "he was cold but nice now", and the overall domineering ML characters. I'm not saying that they're bad (I'm also a sucker for those hate-to-love relationships) but seeing a DECENT ML was just a breath of relief to me and makes the novel so refreshing! In the beginning, the ML thought that our MC is an evil witch (because he didn't know yet that the soul was actually someone else that got transmigrated) but despite this he was very VERY respectful. Even caring! He even cooked breakfast and took care of her when she's sick, and let me remind you that she is his nemesis. This already shows just how good the character is. He's not carried away with emotions, he's very reasonable. And as the story continues and he learned that our MC is a different soul (which he will find out pretty early actually because he's a genius detective) we will see the relationship smoothly grows.

It's just really wholesome seeing their development. They're complete opposite of each other but somehow they work: a great team that solves the mystery together. Not to mention the baby dragon is soooo cute and makes it seem like they're a family already! There are A LOT of cute moments where our ML actually acts like a husband, caring for the "wife" and although he hates to admit it.. But our adorable baby dragon too.

  • I've seen a lot of the reviews and they're like "the MC is sooo lazy" but tbh I think it's because they're still in the early chapters (?) I actually like her behavior which is so different from the other MC of isekai that tries to "strategically plot" stuff all the time. She's really laid back and go-with-the-flow kinda person which makes the character more relatable. The "lazy syndrome" thing actually acts as a humor device sometimes. But what I love most is that, because her character is set up that way in the beginning, the reader and ML become more shocked when in the later chapters she does outstanding stuff with the least energy possible. What I mean by this is that there are moments where our detective ML is in trouble and somehow she always steps in to help in humorous ways. Even claiming as her "wife" one time.
  • Limited misunderstandings. I get it, they make the readers on edge but at this point I'm just tired of those angsty characters misunderstandings. As I said, the MC is very laid back and is practically an open book. The ML is smart and rational and is sincere. He shows it through his actions towards the MC. Any "secrets" like how our MC read the novel was kept for the sake of the plot. But even that secret was out (I love his reaction when the ML found out he was the ML of the novel).
  • The story: adventure, detective, harry-potter-like magic (no wands though sorry) ?! COUNT ME IN!!! The plot was honestly so good and detailed. Like a true detective story there were moments where I was like "OMG I did NOT see that coming" and begin connecting the dots (aka clues). The plot and how good the translation was in capturing it is what really makes me excited for their timely updates! I always finds myself refreshing the page (and I bet you will too).
So give it a go if you want something new, refreshing, and SWEET!

(p.s. Author-nim, thank you soooo much for your hardwork your translations are THE highlight of my mondays, wednesdays, and fridays. I hope you're doing well and thank you soo soo much!)

Love the plot so far! Actually keeps me interested bc I've been on a reader's block. I very much enjoyed this novel.

I like how detailed the novel is; detail about all the characters' feelings. It gives me the real imagery and imagination about their relationship which is really nice to know. I like to know how the ML personally feels sometimes. Thank the lord the characters didn't fall in love literally within like 10 chapters. Keeps it real unlike others.

Aside from that, omg the lil dragon is sooo adorable~ and... more>> it broke my heart when he was abandoned like five times

The MC is just as lazy as me. Not kidding, college life really gets me lazying around to the point I eat just like the MC. But I moved back home now so I'm well and alive.

Translation quality is 5/5 <<less

I tried too hard to like this until MC, despite being in love with ML and basically confirming his feelings for her, decides to be platonic with him. Does this make sense? Not to me.

I justified her s*upidity, tried to come up with logical reasons behind it,

Spoiler

even ignored the blatant plot armour where she gets to order around one of the villain's employee, pretending to be the villain's friend, while talking to herself and cursing said villain, without the employee even questioning or finding her suspicious. I had to shut off my brain at that point.

[collapse]

But I couldn't ignore it any longer.

FL's BS with the whole platonic stuff pulled me right outta the story. And I was so close to finishing this novel too. That alone should give you the idea just how much I hated her for pulling this sh*t.

The novel is okay until like 180 (?) chapters.

Everything went downhill right after that night at the inn after FL's return to her original body.

I'm not rating this, because I dropped it due to issues not related to the story itself. This is only here for future readers.

Put simply, the translation is just plain hard to read. It's stilted, the sentences often feel like they are out of order, and it simply doesn't flow. There's a good chance it's an extremely literal mirror-translation, but in any case, here's a quick example from the third chapter:

Spoiler

A Sorrent in the south, far from the capital Tezeba. It was just a few hours ago that a man arrived in a country village with sheer coastal cliffs to the south, dense forests to the east, and fairy lakes to the west.

"I'm an investigator from Tezeba."

"Ugh."

The chief of the security forces of Sorrent, who was dozing off, leaped to his feet. Tezeba. It's the capital of Laurent. "Tezeba? Where do you belong?"

"Aijet."

The first district of Tezeba, the capital, was an area densely populated by high-ranking aristocratic mansions, including the great emperor of the Laurent Empire. There isn't any detective in those places! The manager fumbled about the desk for his glasses.

[collapse]

I think that whole scene kind of speaks for itself. To be fair, it might've been just as stilted in the original as well, but in any case, exchanges like this made reading this story a chore. The story didn't exactly grab me either, and the characters were either tired old archetypes (dark-haired-übermench-archetype stoic ikemen ML, two-faced child character who acts cute in front of the MC and acts like a jaded sociopath in front of others) or just straight up unpleasant (the MC is a lazy, irresponsible idiot who gets carried by the contrivances of the plot), so in the end, I decided I had better ways to spend my time, and dropped this. <<less

So far I relate to the MC, I have felt and done a lot of what she is shown to do ever since the covid crisis began and even though logically I know its bad for me I still keep falling into the lazy patterns, not eating at all or eating junk making a mess and being completely offended if its cleaned up. I think that this MC is in need of counselling for mental health recovery more then anything else, even her decision to send away the dragon is... more>> because she thinks she can't look after it rather then not liking or caring for it which as far as I can tell is why even though he keeps getting sent away he stubbornly chooses her, in 15 days she starts treating him as her son, its cute. I did like that the ML very quickly figures out that she is not the original and feels sorry for his actions after that. <<less
