The chief female forensic investigator, Ran Yan was secretly killed by her assistant. Unexpectedly, she was reborn in the years of the Tang dynasty. After experiencing a narrow escape, she fled from Jiangnan to Chang’an. Although, Chang’an was at the beginning of its flourishing period under the Li family’s Tang dynasty, various princes were vying for the throne by using all kinds of strategies. This was the dark days of the imperial court, where one needed to walk on a tightrope as one’s life was as powerless as an ant. The Xiao family controlled a large amount of wealth so inevitably they also became involved in the conflicts.

After arriving in Chang’an, she discovered many suspicious incidents: the original owner had unexplainable amnesia but his family was indifferent. She once again saw the orchid shaped clay inkstone, a valuable object that her mother has given her in modern times. Hence, could it be that she can time travel back? In order to survive in the Tang dynasty, she displayed her strong spirit and willpower by learning medicine from a doctor, pretended that she benefited from being sick on how to cure diseases, suffered hardship in earning money, manufactured penicillin, cured syphilis, and used her autopsy skill and experience to solve each and every mu*der mysteries.

Wonderful.

There's so much knowledge and emotion in these chapters, it's not something written just to add more chapters, it's a real masterpiece of the genre. If you like reincarnation novels, a knowledgeable and capable female lead, romance, psychology, and ancient china, you will love it.

It's different from the other novels related to "doctors" since she is a forensic doctor, as the title say. There is the presence of corpse and sometimes the descriptions are quite powerful, there are also lots of mu*der cases etc, kind like detective conan. During the... more>> reading you will feel lots of emotions, also because we deal with psychological themes with the killers.

The main female character is really good, strong, beautiful and capable, she is easily attracted to really handsome male character with a good bone/muscular structure for... research purposes I would say.
There is a beautiful mix of funny moments and serious ones, the male characters are pretty good too.

For what I gather now, there are in particular 3 male characters that will divide the attention of the public, and I have to say, it's so easy to ship for the "wrong" one! I mean, it's not really wrong, but the female character herself will say at some point a phrase that made me understand I was cheering for the wrong couple.

Spoiler

" At the end the one that will accompany you until you hair becomes white is not necessary the one you love, but the one that is most suited for you " My heart broke at this point (T-T).

[collapse]

This novel is written so beautifully that I understood that previously I was giving 5 star for free, like the quality is incomparable. Well, anyway, what matters is the emotion, but I have to say that it's difficult to forget such a novel after reading it, the emotions it transmits... sigh

Anyway, I repeat: Beautiful, Stunning, Absolutely worthy! (unfortunately there are only these few chapters, otherwise... who would not know about this novel?) <<less

Its reaaally good one. I read a lot of time lapsing novel, but the MC on this story is really logical in taking things up. Its your usual sickly MC that went well after soul swapping, but it has beautiful setting, poetic, the author beautifully mixed the MC modern way of thinking while keeping things in the era. Read till ch.11 and couldnt help but craving for more and more. Sadly, the translation went hiatus. Its really promising story. I hope somebody pick it up again soon :"

So far, this is probably the most realistic transmigrated/reincarnated doctor I've read.

Summary:

  • Female forensic expert and workaholic Ran Yan is mu*dered by her assistant. When she awakes, she finds that she has been reborn in the Tang Dynasty -- as an unfavored, first legitimate daughter, thought to be terminally ill and sent to the poor countryside. Ran Yan decides to use her skills to live well in her new life.
Main story genres:

  • Crime & mu*der mystery.
  • Maybe some romance will be coming later, but nothing so far.
Review:

I really like this story, not necessarily because of its plot, but because of the realism.

First off, the main character, Ran Yan, is very believable. This is a woman who, after experiencing the loss of a friend, became a workaholic and leading expert in the field of forensics.

  • She is level-headed, not very expressive, and intelligent. To others, she seems cold -- but she is NOT heartless, invulnerable, emotionless, or "black-bellied" like other female transmigrators. I like that she's just a typical introverted "thinker" personality (a person who makes decisions based on logic rather than emotion, and isn't that great at social engagement).
  • Ran Yan has a very practical "survival mindset." She's not out for revenge, even though her new stepmother and stepsister tried to harm her original host. She doesn't fight or create unnecessary enemies. She's not against being polite to petty girls, and she doesn't mind being married as long as it's to a decent man. Since she transmigrated to a real point in history, she understands her position and rights during this time period.
  • Which brings me to the next best part -- her medical/forensic skills. Ran Yan is NOT a genius doctor, nor does she possess any supernatural skills or godly talent. She has some knowledge of modern medicine due to her studies (but not enough to become a full-fledged doctor), so she chooses to focus on women's health. She loves forensics and analyzing corpses, but she knows that it's socially unacceptable for a young lady in that time period. Unlike other female doctor MCs, she doesn't flaunt her skills, and instead finds ways to work under the radar.
  • The only unbelievable thing about her is that her host body is extremely beautiful -- but what can you do, it's a CN... *shrug*
So far, I give this novel 5 stars.

As of Ch.50, the first plot arc is still developing and no primary male leads have been identified, so I will update this review later as the plot progresses. <<less

As we all know transmigration story grows like cancer, but since it grows to be a genre instead of overused plot... we can't say it's lack of originality. If anything, diving to this genre test an author's skill. The author is undoubtedly put a lot of effort on character and plot.
First of all, while I haven't checked the history background of this story judging from how much material laid out about culture says a lot about meticulousness in world building. There's not much artistic liberty since this is a... more>> real historical setting, which is rare for transmigration story.

The main character is a forensic doctor as the title says, Yan Ran. What's so admirable about this character is her strong resolve to survive. She transmigrated to the past with only her knowledge and skill to support her. She might be the legal daughter of the family, but she has nonexistent power and her father seems to view her as political marriage tool so far. Even though she is a modern woman with modern mindset of a career coroner, she looks at her present world logically and decided her previous career choice would give her trouble. So she opted to be a doctor and try to make a living once again.

She is also not eager to pay back family members who wronged her, as she logically concluded even if she has solid case against her step-mother it's not worth making a real enemy in Yan family. Which I find a fresh take on transmigrated character, whose vessel more often than not suffer injustice. Yan Ran is more concerned in making livelihood and taking care of her two loyal servants.

Side characters more often than not are weak points in Chinese web novel, more often than not there's not much background and characterization in them. This story is a slow going so there shouldn't be much but some of the character like young teacher Sang Chen has well-thought character. He is not exactly the best one but he is unique and betray the first impression spectacularly.

Yan Ran's servants are also described well in their character. The young servant is cute, loyal but impulsive Wan Lu. Steadier, wise, loyal but bitter Min Xiang mama.

As for the plot... there's no significant progress in romance as we don't even know if we have seen the male lead yet. Possibly there's one appearance but that's it, so when reading this novel don't expect romance as much as drama of Yan Ran exploring life in Ancient Tang Dynasty. This is a slow burn story with good length in each chapter, the drama and Yan Ran's wit is enough to keep reader hooked regardless.
Be warned of graphic description of forensic record, the author definitely did her homework in this. Some delicate issue like prostitution and STD are mentioned so perhaps there's a need for R-15 rating at least.

All in all, this is a rare well written transmigration-timetravel story so I highly recommend it! <<less

I really like this novel but I admit that it is not for everyone. The pace is slow, yes, but I like the details the author brings to us - medical knowledge, knowledge about other characters, about MC's past, about objects, etc. I feel that, as I read from chapter 1 to chapter 74 without having to wait for the releases, it is easier for me to remember the relationship between the characters, so I can clearly see why our MC does what she does, why she is involved in... more>> the investigation, and who each person really is - for example, there will be characters that will appear in one chapter and will only reappear 10-15 chapters later. I like the MC's personality, she is 'cold', but you can see different sides of her when she is interacting with different characters,
Spoiler

especially when she is with Ran Yunsheng or one of the candidates for ML - Sang Chen and Xiao Song *-*

[collapse]

And for those that want to know about the romance (Idk much myself, only this little bit, super spoiler ahead)
Spoiler

I know that there isn't much romance until she gets married to the ML, he is

[collapse]

Spoiler

Xiao Song. XD iirc someone said that the wedding is around chapter 200, so we still have 130 chapters until there

The story itself is good, kudos for the translator to pick up this novel but the translation too slow. Just wonder with this pace of translation, how many years it will take to finish to read this novel.

Hopefully there will be another translator to work with the current translator to update the chapters more quickly as this novel is adapted to drama that will be aired next year!

This novel is worth reading not like others usual transmigrator or reincarnation novels.

I'm glad someone picked up this novel. This is a very interesting novel and has it's own originality. Although the MC is a doctor that has transmigrated, she does not have a system or guardian to rely on.

Rating 2 stars

I honestly hesitated a lot before reading this novel. The synopsis didn't excite me but reading few reviews I was finally willing to give it a try, but....I was disappointed (not exactly it's just not my cup of tea) Author has done good job on all the research that has been put into this novel. Kudos to translation sites who had put lot of efforts in researching and providing right images.

Coming to story, well FL, a double doctrate forensic doctor transmigrated into Tang Dynasty. Her reasons of medical... more>> knowledge and autopsy was sometimes reasonable and unreasonable. Her maids can believe her 'immortal teaching in dream' excuse, also a good point in adding great doctor Wu as her master so the outside would will know her source of knowledge. This part is fine but when it comes to autopsy nobody questioned her. I mean the author has spent so much in researching medical field and autopsy but failed to provide a strong platform (reason) which is logical. A fifteen years old young lady who was believed to be terminally ill can perform autopsy even better than a coroner who has few decades of experience, well the reason for old coroner's inefficiency is given as that the number of bodies they dissected are less as they mainly focus on external autopsy but then a young lady dissects bodies with extreme details how nobody questions this but in turn is fascinated?

Well I have seen this kind of basic logics being ignored in many novels so I could still read past this.

FL was strong and cold but I couldn't come to like her (reason, I don't know she seemed too perfect although author added few traits here and there to make her feel likable but it seemed so forced you could hardly relate to it). And can be considered nearly Mary Sue, all the males are attracted to her. I know C-novels are nothing without beautiful leads but this novel was little over the top. I think atleast 5-6 (maybe more) chapters are spent on describing the breathtaking beautiful appearance of the leads.

Coming to male interests, 68 chapters and still there's no specific love interest (although spoiler says it's XS), not that I complain. First interest, Sang Chen, you know sometimes you just feel repulsed by certain character even if they are positive. The author was trying to create a very sunny character who sees good in everything and everyone and also too cute but for some reason I was repulsed (I generally like cute character like this but this one, nope). Second interest, Su Fu, there's no much explanation on him except his breath taking beauty and cold nature. Third interest, Xiao Song, the ML, I couldn't like him as well, not sure of the reason but just couldn't have any favourable impression. Another turn off point for me is the age gap between leads, FL is only 15 whereas ML is 26. I am someone who can't tolerate big age gap especially if FL is underage.

As for story part, there's none, atleast till chapter 68. If you remove description on characters appearance and autopsy part there's hardly any story development worth few chapters and the chapters are quite lengthy.

As for crime mystery, although it's quite intriguing you would loose interest or probably forget about it because of other extra chapters. Too many things involved at a time.

I couldn't connect to any character or atleast had positive impression.

This story left me lot of blank space like it felt very empty I don't know how to describe this feeling but over and all it's not my cup of tea. <<less

Don't mislead by the description, the drama is more than that. Description sounds like almighty female doctor in ancient time. It's really not at all.

A hidden gem. Great plot, characters and intrigue. Some might have problems with mc's temperament but think she was a forensic investigator. Also killed by her assistant. Its natural to have a cold and calm nature. But that doesn't mean she really is as she also have crush for some but it cut off before bloom.

I really have a soft spot for 2nd ml. But you... more>> know, if I was the MC I also would choose the ml. Moreover MC said the most rational truth "The person who grows old with you is often not your favorite, but the most suitable for you. The one who can accompany you to your journey might not be the one who is as outstanding as you, but the one who supports and believes in you".

The only problem is that it doesn't describe side characters throughly. My heart had beaten for one of the side characters. Alas!! He was mentioned in only some chapters.

Hope you enjoy the novel. <<less

This is a very good book much different from the drama. I like the book better. I also really like the medical detail. I bet this makes the book harder to translate.

Keep up the great work on the translation!

When I was reading this, I don't really understand a lot of the medical jargon, and I feel like many readers are the same way. This novel is slow-paced because the author puts a lot of details on the mystery aspects and mu*der cases. Some people may be irked by this, but I think that, rather than a fast paced novel more focused on romance and repetitive family drama, this is more beautifully written exactly because the plot isn't rushed and the readers witness the characters grow.

At first, the MC... more>> may be cold and indifferent, which is a temperament and attitude she gained from her profession as a forensic doctor. But later on, we see how she started caring for the people around her and learns to smile more and appreciate others.

The romance in the story... well, it's still in the somewhat "getting to know each other" phase. The MC doesn't have any ambiguous relationship with the three potential male leads. At most, they can be considered acquaintances at this point in time. Also, I appreciate the drastic differences between the male lead characters and their interaction with the MC. Unless you've read the spoilers, it's really hard to guess who the MC would actually end up with.

I really like how the author described the male leads in this analogy:

"Among the three men, Sang Chen is white, and he is bright and pure, beautiful is longing for; Su Fu is black, hidden in darkness, doing the darkest deeds, never seeing the sun; and Xiao Song is gray, he stood in an upright position, but he had to do some dark things, hypocrisy and cunning." (Sorry for the grammatical errors, this line was directly MTl-ed)

I'll postpone my ratings until I get a bit farther in the story. <<less

This novel shares a lot of similarities with other historical c-novels. It´s not bad but sometimes I do skip some lines.

If I had to point the cons:

1. The author made the MC too perfect. So perfect she has no personality of her own. Basically a robot in a female body. Now this might sound like an exaggeration but after 73 chapters I still don´t know anything about MC. Nothing at all. She remains neutral in all situations.

2. Far too specific with the medical stuff. Seriously how many paragraphs do we... more>> need describing the human body?

3. There is a lot of mystery-solving in this novel, and it could´ve been interesting and thrilling but sadly none of the characters involved have any background to them so as a reader it´s hard to feel attached to any. And none of them have a relation with MC so you lose interest quickly. Who cares why and how this person or that person died? They are completely irrelevant to MC!! <<less

Really good! I'm glad I found it, it's already one of my favorite novels!! The author is truly great, lot of research was done for the historical and medicinal elements, I love it. I'm really grateful towards the new translator, too bad they're busy and the translations aren't as often as I'd want, but it's understandable. As a college student I even find it hard to make time to read sometimes, translation is even harder, yet the translator makes such quality translations, adds a lot of informative footnotes and nice... more>> notes. I love medical novels and usually chinese transmigration have to easy to follow/reading flow. But for some reason this novel doesn't do me like the others I've read so far, so I couldn't get hooked, I wanted to drop it on the first chapter because the writting was not my style. Like who ask for it to be specfic, specfic (medical terms). And I haven't fallen in love with the MC. I dont even see her personality yet but even if it shows up in l8r chapters I womt read... more>> it for now.

So series dropped. <<less

It’s a great novel that depicts modern perspective best. Most ancient times themed novels suffer from monogamous thinking in the side of the FL who is the transmigrator. While this is romantic it is not logical at all. People who have lived in the current times just don’t have this inhibition because we didn’t grow up thinking that once we loved someone else we aren’t entitled to be happy again with someone else. Albeit first love is heartbreaking, but that’s all that is. While reading about the FL being indecisive... more>> and sh*t with her love life tastes bad, it actually depicts modern times best. The time where critical thinking is put first than emotion. Just think of SF as the illogical emotion brain of the FL and XS as the logical brain of the FL. Heck think of SF as the first love that made no absolute sense. Think about it. There really wasn’t anything that SF did that can make a double phd career oriented woman fall head over heels for him. He was just mysterious, dangerous and overly attractive. They don’t even know anything about each other and the guy even once threatened her life. The anomaly for me was actually the ML. Environment and society plays a big role in one’s character. The sod off 1 chap extra at the end which ‘rationalizes’ the ML’s train of thought really raises a lot of questions. I haven’t met an ancient man but even now during modern times, men just doesn’t feel that loving one person means they will be physically faithful to their spouse. Once provided with opportunity they are more than likely to stray. Not mentioning the fact that they are raised as a scum, the ratio of men cheating on their significant other in modern times is just that alarming. And this is during times where cheating is frowned upon. What more during ancient times where cheating isn’t even cheating? If the author is really pushing for realism at best, she should’ve also risked concubinage or maybe brothel visit. As it is scientifically proven that Men are anatomically capable of sleeping with someone without any emotional baggage unlike women. Just my two cent <<less

Impressions as of Ch.11.

A slow burn of a story, set in the days of the Tang Dynasty of China. The MC was a female forensics investigator who was killed, and awoken to find herself in the body of a bed-ridden lady; sent far away due to the schemes of her step-mother who wanted legitimacy to take over the household affairs.

The story has the hallmarks of the usual family drama setting, sharing similarities with Mei Gongqing; including the relatively close time period and similar conservative concerns about ladylike behavior and reputation.... more>> We get to read about the doubts of the MC as she treads cautiously in her new world, afraid of revealing too much of her modern knowledge and sensibilities.

The translated chapters are sufficient as a teaser and I hope we get to read how she would later be confident enough to apply her skills in the historical world.

I hope the translator is able to upload more chapters regularly, as the story has 400+ chapters. <<less

After reading all the reviews here, I wanted to give it a try. But, soon I dropped it.

Why?

    1. It has 4.5 rating; but I really couldn't feel connected with FL. Being a woman, I always feel connected with female characters more, thus I like to read novels with good female characters. But, I am not being able to connect with this female lead. Too much OP kinda thing here. It's like a robot, she's perfect as everyone is fascinated; but perfect like a robot means she has no emotions or personality at all. OP characters are good, but too much is not good.
    2. FL knows that she's in Tang Dynasty; even coming near the prostitute building can ruin a girl's reputation. When her maid (Wan Lu) warns her about it, FL said, "Shut up and follow me". It's written that FL is so majestic and so outstanding as a higher person (in the previous life) that Wan Lu stopped talking and even quickly ran to find those prostit**es in broad daylight, when anyone who has evil mind can use this to attack FL's reputation. Why? Because, she's used to getting interested whenever there's disease, mu*der & dead bodies.
    3. FL said she doesn't want to be a coroner again, but only after half a day, still rushed forward to use advanced knowledge while rescuing a kid. Why? Because, she's used to keep hurrying for saving a victim & witness alive to solve cases. Even while telling them to find another doctor, she's saying this "I'm not saving someone, only because I'm used to saving victims". When you know this is past life's habit & she even said "I'm used to running towards corpses", we can see she's inviting trouble.
    4. Don't know, but FL doesn't seem to have a Personality. It's like, She's cold outside soft inside, but I just can't relate to her actions. I'm not interested in forensic parts, as it tend to get lengthy. I'm here to read Fantasy, Romance, Thrill, Mystery kinda novel; not a forensic professional book.
    5. In 400+ chapters, if we remove these forensic cases, we have nothing. 3 Male characters and FL's interactions are good, though sometimes even a perfect person shows emotions, but for FL, it's complicated.
I really wanted to continue reading as some parts of this novel are quite good. But, as it's not fully translated, I have to eventually convert the whole part to figure out which chapters are good. It's hectic. If it's only 200+ chapters novel, I can still go on. But, it's 400+, I can't read like that.

It's a pity that I have no interest to do Chinese to English every chapter to find good parts, otherwise

I really wanted to see how this Wooden OP FL, fall in love which is an emotion I really can't place in the same place with this WOOD.

(My opinion only, if you find this novel interesting, try it. I dropped it because of the reasons, maybe you'll find it amazing or boring (everyone is different).
