To be good, or to be evil.

With time, society started building up again and people were now living in walled strongholds and fringe towns across the land.

Moronic protagonists doing s*upid things due to low IQ & EQ isn't funny. Tr*sh tier world building isn't something you can write a good story on. Everyone, from the author to minor characters, lacking any and all ability to plan ahead makes for a terrible novel. Unless the author somehow scraps what he's written so far, it's impossible for anything better to be built from this.

It started out decent but at some point it just boring. There's a part of the story where the MC has to get from point A to point B but the story leading up to that point just felt so bland and uninteresting. I literally tuned out the story as I read it. It doesn't do anything to hold my attention.

I absolutely love this novel! It's not the best, but it's really fun to read. 919 chapters, and I still want more!

The MC is strong and should feel overpowered, but his abilities are balanced pretty well in the overall scheme of things. Thankfully, he's also not s*upid or absolutely good at everything. He knows he isn't the best at everything, and his character development is good. More importantly, he has a strict honor code (in my opinion) and isn't evil despite being in a pretty ruthless world. He's not afraid... more>> to kill enemies, but he'll also recognize that the same organization isn't absolutely evil and assist them when it comes to the greater good.

The worldbuilding is also pretty unique, and the MC's powers are interesting/still a mystery.

The side characters are pretty good too! I really appreciate how not everyone's kissing the MC's ass (although there is a lot of that). Man, I was super touched by their relationships with the MC. They're also quite complex in that a lot of characters want to do the right thing, but can't or debate about what the right thing is. There's a lot of grey in this novel. I also really like the female lead. She's not annoying or useless, and she really suits the MC.

Also, I really like how the author ties small details into bigger things. For example, the MC being unable to ride a bicycle? Actually not some gag, but something with an actual reason revealed later.

If you like action with some comedy, this is for you! That is, if you like the comedy. It's a bit simple/low. Ex: MC weirding people out by singing nursery rhymes in a war. <<less

It starts good but goes down hill fast!

Though there are many fronts in which the story fails, I want to talk about the ability, the system of the MC. As attractive as it may seem at first, promising grand development, it ultimately proves to be no more than just the selling point of the author. It has not rules, not nothing. When the author sees a decline in readership he pushes it illogically and inconsistently. This shows how little the author thinks of his readers and the truth of his... more>> efforts in the story.

This ugliness defeats anything good that can be said about the story and therefore it gets 1 Star. <<less

Spoiler

the most annoying thing come that is suddenly there is a girl, taciturn one, 'leave me alone' aura that keeps popping up and 'forced' as love interest. Which I is not my cup of tea. It is better if his love interest is the teacher / brother / childhood friend, than that girl, I instantly dropped it, and wait another time, cause the 'romance' spoiled it.

[collapse]

That is too bad, I really like the MC, the MC is very smart, keen, but not know it all, he know because of his past experience. The self-claimed brother is very cute too, I ship MC with him, too bad the ship is sinking.

The story itself is interesting, and you can't guess what it will be / not easy to guess.

I will give 5/5 before all the crap about that girl and MC.

But 3/5 after
Spoiler

the girl 'forced' as love interest, cause it makes MC has lower iq, suddenly out of character. Made me very disappointed and dropped it, until I feel like accepting suddenly love interest come, I will pick it up again.

[collapse]

The slow romance not flowed well, rather it is 'pretty fast' and forced. When I see that chapter, I really got omnious feeling, things will be spoiled, and... now seeing eithanf's review. I knew it!, from that chapter it goes downhill and dissapointing.

Spoiler

By nature he is very alert and don't trust stranger, he only trust his brother and childhood friend, but that girl got free pass?? I mean where is your alertness?? defense? how come you trust her easily and searching for her, and like want to be with her ?? I mean what??, she also hurt him and like they are type mutual benefit, backstab each other why his iq suddenly go offline, where is his cold, ruthless personality??

I just dislike this kind !! it is better with no romance at all, it spoiled all good taste. If the love interest adopted brother / childhood friend, I can accept it, since they went up and down together many years, and also 100% trust because distrustful event already passed.

I love this novel. If anyone wanted to machine translate this I would say go ahead because it's actually surprisingly very MTL friendly.

Comedy is great. I love how MC is reliable but at some moments he is just a dope.

Female lead is also great, although she hasn't gotten much development yet she is more than a 2D character there to serve as fan service or just to make MC look manly.

Plot progression is interesting and not too nonsensical.

Wound definitely recommend this novel.

I enjoyed it up to chapter 400ish, mostly.

I found myself often wondering if this was still the same world depicted in the beginning chapters.

I dropped this when it went from ability-steal ruthless MC to army building/military.

Honestly disappointed in the novel, could've been really good- the MC is a bit of a ret*rd and continually misuses his ability steal and skill duplication scrolls, no planning or forethought is made. The biggest plot hole that bugged me though was that ... more>>
Spoiler

The first power the MC copies is a shadow clone of himself with double his strength/dexterity stats, the clone is corporeal and can't die, but the MC feels the pain from the clone being hurt. Later on the MC gathers a suit of body armor made up of nanites yet it never occurs to the MC to apply the armour to his clone and then sit back whilst his clone does all the work.

[collapse]
Just one of several plot holes that overall ruined the story. There was one plot hole that didn't even make any sense when he wasn't able to properly steal a power. <<less

I really liked the novel, unfortunately during the current arc (around ch. 450-500 onwards) things start to be quiet s*upid and its a shame. Still an enjoyable read.

  • power balance is done right. After getting stronger MC is OP and can kill anyone 1-on-1 but he isn't invincible. Firearms are still dangerous there is still a sense he will die if faced with a large crowd of enemies.
  • MC is smart but not a genius. He sometimes makes mistakes and gets busted for it but all in all his actions are very reasonable.
  • System is funny and weird but it is regarded as weird by the MC
  • No harem - Finally not an MC that every females who hears his name instantly falls in love with him. The female lead is interesting (even if taciturn) and more then just a 'damsel in distress' character.
Where things go downhill for me:

Spoiler

He is looking for his missing girlfriend and family, and just starts being super s*upid in his goals. He runs away from his powerful allies who can probably help with connections for no good reason.

Then he goes looking for them himself but trying to keep low so no one will recognize him, makes sense to keep them safe but how will he ever find anyone that way??

Next he works super hard to get into an assassin guild so he can ask them to help him find them as a favor, which he could probably just paid them with his money and contacts! He then goes on annoying them (remember he needs their help) by doing s*upid stuff for some money.

These are just a few examples, all his actions in this arc are just plain s*upid and it is a shame because it was great uptil then

[collapse]

Spoiler

Another annoying point at that part is that some girl just starts calling him master and following him as his maid out of nowhere. WTF?

Honestly I should have checked the tags on here before I started reading the story. That tragedy tag does NOT lie guys. This might be one of the most realistic depictions of war I've read (ignoring the whole fantasy portion) just in terms of how many named characters with nontrivial plot points died and were sacrificed. It was literally one after another. Lots of tissues were sacrificed, one of the key reasons I try to avoid tragedies.

The ending was pretty solid, though there are a lot of unfinished plot points.... more>> Some arcs were pretty filler though entertaining in between the tragedy. I appreciated the character design, where almost everyone was heavily nuanced and it was quite hard to say who was in the wrong and who was right. Our MC seemed both pretty strong and extremely weak, especially when you see how many of the people close or important to him were sacrificed in his journey. Time for me to try to read about someone overpowered to cleanse my heart. <<less

So far, the story was so gripping. I've been reading non stop till now. There are minimal cliches, and the plot keeps a good pace. The action is really good, and the characters aren't 1 dimensional. ╰ (*°▽°*) ╯ The story is well written and "realistic" in the fantasy genre. The humor/comedy also made me laugh. Its one of the best post-apocalyptic novels I have read. ☆*:.。. O (≧▽≦) o.。.:*☆

The MC is so well written! He's very humane and smart. Hes strong, but he doesn't deny what he cant do, and... more>> he wants to get stronger not for glory but to protect his loved ones. Surprisingly "plot armer" doesn't always protect the MC. He's not the smartest- ex; he cant direct military troops, but he makes up for his shortcomings by focusing on what he can do.

His enemies and allies also have goals and are strong, but the MC works really hard to protect his family and friends.

sh*t happens, hence why there is a tragedy tag. Sh*t happens to the MC a lot. ಥ_ಥ <<less

I read 1k chapters and mtl the rest. This is better than SMGL if you read that

This is a hidden gem. From start to end, expect light hearted humor that wont bore. Adventures on different cultures. Lots of characters with there own unique ways of survival and strength. Romance is realistic. A bit nationalist, those not from the country are barbarians/backward races. MC is very lucky to have strength in this chaotic era but also very unlucky as his only wish is a find place to settle down but the... more>> era doesnt let him. Multiple places he has visited will have tragedies not related to him. Same with Qingzheng he only wants to tend to his garden. Ending feels closed and complete, but will leave us multiple questions of what happend to other side characters. I wish a long epilouge will complete it. <<less

Honestly this is a tough 2 star rating. It is mainly based on how the author gave up on writing near the end. It is very visible in the last 300+ chapters the author was rushing to get things done. I felt the story really suffered with all the build up along the way the mystery's back stories etc. They all got thrown away by the author for a quick and easy wrap up of the novel leaving almost every plot point unfinished or left to imagination.

I've seen comparisons that put it on the same level as Lord of the Mysteries and I disagree.

1) This is a cheap shot to make but one obvious sign of its appeal to the lowest common denominator is the unnecessary in-universe shipping of the protagonist with significant female characters.

I feel s*upid to have to explain it but this trope breaks immersion because shipping people together hasn't been established as a common thing that people do in-universe. And it feels that way because shipping happens to no one else but the... more>> protagonist even though other characters seem developed enough for me to expect similar things to happen to them if shipping were indeed a common in-universe practice. What, are other male characters so unattractive and weak that no one else thinks they're worth shipping with others?

This type of wish fulfillment isn't as bad as having so many female characters fall in love with that protagonist that you have suspicions about their intellect, but it's still so out of place that it takes me out of the story.

2) The random nature of his new powers weakens the believability and the progression fantasy elements of the story.

A reader can forgive a story with many lucky coincidences when they are used to set up comedic situations. But if the comedy falls off or it no longer seems as fresh, then everything starts looking more like plot armor. Unfortunately, that's what happened.

The novel is also in this weird spot where it's not going hard enough at the comedy for new powers to be amusing or hard enough at progression fantasy for them to feel strong. Useless powers are just that, useless. Contrast that with The Strongest System where dumb moves are so ridiculous I can't wait to see what shenanigans the protagonist will pull off with them. As for the progression fantasy aspect, even when powers are useful, they're not obviously strong or showcased in ways that make them feel strong. Here, the comedic elements work against this. Instantly-sprouting bramble seeds, really?

All in all, new powers don't feel like rewards so it cheapens the work to get there. What makes it more disappointing is that the world does have a system for classifying different power levels except it's so rarely mentioned that we can't see whether the protagonist is progressing from one power level to the next.

3) The arcs so far have felt repetitive, with little sense of the plot progressing.

It's one thing to have a recurring theme but it's another to repeat the same sequence of events in consecutive arcs. I've had it with the escaping from destroyed strongholds, face slapping of ungrateful escapee leeches, getting forcibly taken in by a major force, and then facing discrimination from stronghold residents who don't know the hardships of the outside world.

4) The novel doesn't do "big secrets" well enough for me to stay interested.

Most of the revelations or speculations are either not impactful enough or lack sufficient follow up. The former type fails because the stakes aren't high. For example, Qing Company being behind the bandits doesn't seem like much trouble because the protagonist is on good terms with them.

The latter type is more frustrating for me and the best example is a certain character's big sacrifice. As much as the emotional consequences were satisfying, the author had to mess it up by making a huge fuss about how it was recognized as some turning point in history with regards to the power system. However, 50 chapters later and we still have no one talking about its impact, as if all the people in power are uninterested or even unaware. I get that it's probably the set up for something much later but don't make a huge fuss and then follow up with radio silence. If it's foreshadowing for something much later, it should have come out as a throwaway statement or have a qualifier like oh, no one would realize it until much later. As it is, I felt like I was getting hyped up for nothing.

5) The love interest is unlikeable.

Right after another character's sacrifice and the protagonist rescuing the love interest from a life-threatening situation, she takes weeks to get back in contact with the MC. And this when the protagonist is weakened so everyone is struggling and placing their hopes in her, which makes her delay frustrating and disappointing.

The explanation is that it took time for her to search for them in person, but doesn't she have the power of her information network? What's worse is she seemingly offers them hope only to dump them in the same old situation of being under the thumb of others. I'm already annoyed by the protagonist getting stuck in the same kind of shit, but having the love interest be responsible for it just infuriates me. At this point I'd rather ship him with any of the dudes who would willingly sacrifice their lives for him. The author could have done so much more to stop her from becoming unlikable. <<less

Dark Moon Era should learn from this novel. I'd even go as far as to say that it is a cheap clone of The First Order. In between action we get tons of jokes and good humour.

Nowadays we get a lot of post-apocalyptic and apocalyptic (modern) novels that often come with systems: most are mediocre (like Master of the End Times), but this one and World's Best Martial Artist are among the best of the best.

Overall a read worth your time. You should not even debate on whether to read... more>> it or not - you won't regret no matter whether you like good comedy, good action, drama or touching scenes. Keep in mind that the author takes some things from his previous novel which I just realised (e.g. In this novel there's also a girl named Lu Xiayou, while Spare Me, Great Lord! Appears in a library).

Good side of the novel:

  • no petty or one-dimensional characters
  • balanced world, no cheats; superpowers stem from human evolution and are only beginning to make their appearance
  • good humour in a serious, post-nuclear war setting (it is used smartly to get out of certain situations by various characters)
  • no artifically created or bland mysteries
  • unique superpowers
  • MC isn't swayed by any random beauties (there are not a lot anyway)
  • MC tries to control his fate
  • MC is not a psycho: if there's a dangerous threat he will do anything eliminate it, but otherwise he's rather kind for these harsh times
  • there's no such thing as white and dark, hero and villain; everyone is gray
  • MC is often a third party in the grand scale of things because his goal is so far survival and his impact is somewhat insignificant, but it changes
  • MC knows how to repay favours and doesn't abandon or forget people who showed goodwill
  • fights between refugees, soldiers, superhumans, nature on micro and macro level
  • likeable, fleshed out characters (that are not dropped or forgotten by the author after MC gets way over their league)
  • lively conversations
  • amazing growth and development of side characters
  • plot diversity; MC doesn't only fight or schemes, his power somewhat makes him dabble in other fields (e.g. Medicine, teaching, bombs, games, firearms, farming, researching)
  • we discover the world along with MC
  • the developing romance is soo cute and I love it
  • no plot armor (well, Xianxiu has a humour one but that's spoiler xd)
Bad side of the novel:

  • most strongholds are super weak and fragile, to the point that any random Tom, d*ck or Harry with decent offensive force can f*ck up the defenses
  • women get slightly better treatment than men (although it's not really that noticeable or an issue since author gives reasonable explanations as to why)
  • side characters re-appear too quickly, MC meets them every arc (this makes some scenarios a little predictable, and also decreases the amount of new side characters)
I will check out the author's other novel because he got me hooked on this one. <<less

I don't recommend.

After catching up, I have no desire to start reading anything new. This just might be my last webnovel. I currently read mtl'ed new chapters daily, and am waiting for actual translated chapters to pile up a bit, to read those aswell. Am looking forward to the details I missed on the first read through..

So to say, it is too good of a read. Now I cant garner interest to read anything else. I give a mountain of respect to author. Additionally, the personal notes he includes make... more>> me like him very much. Frankly, I did not expect such a gem. It basically tops any webnovel I have read before. The depth, characters, humor, underlying meanings, emotions, portrayal of humanity, etc etc etc. Cant find anything to criticize or dislike...

So, I genuinelly cant recommend the novel to you. If you ever want to read another one, without being disappointed. The bar has been raised sky high. <<less

It's actually a good book despite a lot of people saying it's not worth it. It's well written, the plots are good, the characters are not cardboard cutouts, and the world building is unique and pretty well made. I think you'll not regret reading this one.

I'm not gonna go over the good parts of this book as a lot of good reviews were already in the review section. Let's go over the parts that needed more work from the author.

First is the weak romance. I sincerely think that the romance... more>> part was unnecessary. Especially if you are an author that was not good at it, the same with the author of this book. But before I elaborate, I still have to commend the effort of the author in creating at least a decent romantic plot where there is no harem and there was loyalty with the MC and FL. Now, let's go over why it's weak. First of all, I didn't get how they suddenly just said to anyone they know that they like each other when they never have ever have recollections and reflection of how they just fall to each other. The author made situations, that most of the time are forced, so that these two can have a moment. Which is bad, because it felt unnatural. One factor was also that the author was not good enough to create a romantic situation amidst the survival part of the story. The story has the tint of darkness and seriousness with death as the consequence if they just perform weakly. There is an emphasis towards being stronger so that they have to live. Pair this with a subpar romance that was just inserted while forcing some plots and sacrificing some plots for the main plot, will just bring down the story. The romance part was not placed correctly and it was also not that believable, strong, relevant, and endearing to the hearts of the reader or at least to me. One of the factors also was because I was already antagonizing the FL, I don't hate her character but if you are going to make a romantic interest, the readers should also love her the way the MC loves her, or at least they can see and understand the reason why he loves her. The FL was the cold and unemotional type so most of the conversation between the two are stale, it got better around chapter 300-400 but was still not a likable character in my eyes. Now that I am writing this, I can't really see how the MC liked her, I can't find reasons that I at least have to refute. There were just so few developments, then the author just decided to say yeah they are already madly in love with each other. The worst thing was, if it was Li Xiaoyu, his sister, or Zhou Xiaoyu (?), his maid, I can still understand and be glad with the romantic parts because they have chemistry with the MC and at least they are likable and reflective type of characters. It's like the FL is inside a black box while these two females are in two transparent box, I can understand them while I hardly even know about the FL.

Towards chapter 500s onwards or at least chapter 700 where Im currently at, the story has become direction less. There was no clear motivation. Like the MC will state his motivation to find his brother and family but the way he acts most of the time was not in line with this, the author was forcing him to different subplots and he just went out with it. Its not highly obstructing but with all the chaos happening and will happen, it feels unrewarding. He was also not developing, it's been 300 chapters but he never had new abilities or improvements in his power. There was no new task, there was I think only two the one gave a basic copy and one was one dexterity. He didn't need new abilities, just some improvements like improved knowledge or fighting styles will do but nada he just got a new maid and every achievement of the maid will turn into him as he was her master. It's still entertaining but I was thinking the plot will elevate but it became static, I hope the next few chapters will be good.

Just lessen the force plotting and have some motivation and direction and it will turn for the better. <<less
