The Demon King Always Thinks I’m Secretly In Love With Him

Bai Yang is the youngest son of a rich family who grew up spoiled, unambitious and having no one expect anything from him. He doesn’t really mind this though, because he’s still able to live a simple and happy life.

One day, however, his older brother got into an accident and is now comatose. Bai Yang’s father now has to consider his youngest son to take over the family business. Unfortunately for him, Bai Yang is a weak, timid, and cowardly child. How can he ever succeed?

Wanting to change his son’s personality, the father has Bai Yang transmigrated into the world of Wild Wind, a very famous fantasy novel. Bai Yang’s father hopes the environment of that world will shape his son to be more arrogant and domineering, as a child of a wealthy scion family ought to be.

However, due to an error with the Main System, instead of transmigrating as the protagonist, Bai Yang ends up becoming a cannon fodder villain, Xie Zietian, from the Demon Realm! In order to safely and quickly return to his world, Bai Yang has to ensure that the protagonist, Zhou Ying, ascends to the heavens so his transmigration mission will be complete.

In order to sneak into the human realm and help Zhou Ying, Bai Yang comes up with a variety of excuses to the Demon King of Eternal Night, such as…

Bai Yang, in a dignified manner: “Your Majesty, that person might threaten the demon world. I went to the human world to kill him for you!” (Actually, I went there to meet the protagonist.)

Bai Yang, proclaiming his loyalty: “Your Majesty, hang in there. I will go to the human world to find the elixir for you!” (Actually, I went there to save the protagonist.)

Bai Yang, with an attitude of selfless dedication: “Your Majesty, I just want to go to the human world to further your great cause!” (Actually, I went there to see the protagonist.)

The Demon King’s face remained impassive but, in fact, the tips of his ears were red. He was thinking: I can’t believe he loves me so deeply…

Demon King: “Hmph! Seeing how clingy you are, I’ll accept your love. Tell me! Whatever you need, I’ll give it to you!”

Bai Yang: “****! Your Majesty, I don’t love you.”

Demon King: “No, you love me.”

The Demon King truly believed Bai Yang and he shared a deep mutual love until he discovered that Bai Yang was having an “affair” with a “wild human” …

I didn't vote with stars because I already knew of the problem thanks the comments section before reading the novel.

Yeah. It's gonna be another one of those reviews where "everything was fine until chapter 70".

Spoiler

The only way to save the ML was for him to insert his pen*s in the MC and create a channel to circulate energy and deal with the ki-deviation. So the MC decides to help save the ML's life, and only asks for a promise of being gentle and only inserting.

Of course the demon king breaks the promise RIGHT AWAY and instead without preparation simple shoves and goes at it without any care about the pain, bleeding, pleas to stop, and DOESN'T EVEN CIRCULATE THE ENERGY.

Making the MC's sacrifice and pain and suffering useless.

[collapse]

To me, the problem doesn't come from the r*pe. The tag is there. The comments are there. There was more than enough warnings.

The problem comes from the way it was....

Spoiler

Noticed as something bad and wrong he did and afterwards absolutely ignored as a form of violence by the demon king and WORST of all, by the system.

The demon king is a character in a wuxia world, so this kind of thinking can be expected on the worldview.

The system in the other hand, was like a trusted friend. One that simple glosses over the suffering, fear and trauma that came after the event and convinces the MC that the r*pe was his fault. That he knew it would happen.

That since he knew in the very back of his mind the possibility, shown by his reluctance, he MUST have wanted it and it was HIS fault.

That argument of "man are unable of keeping their reason or stopping once they put it in" and that it was his fault for believing the demon king's promise. That he was asking for it. (Victim blaming at it's worst)

[collapse]

See, the system plays the part/is characterized as a modern female. To read it saying such things was ten times worse than the ML's thinking. THAT was a betrayal of expectations.

The way the story flows it truly doesn't seem like the r*pe and victim blaming is something the author KNOWS it's wrong but put in the story for the sake of conflict, growth, to attract public or whatever.

It seems like a belief so ingrained and intrinsic to the author's opinion that they vomited it in the story accidentally.

It has no purpose, it does not entertain, it is not important for the plot and...

Spoiler

Even the trauma of the event is resolved by further raping in a very short time.

And it totally detracts from the story. Because if you are going to write about the pain and trauma it caused, writing that it was solved in a few days or weeks and ignored as if it never happened, with no lasting effects, at least put an reason for it. Even a half baked one.

[collapse]

I hope that the author will correct this in the future.

#####################Well, I'm now on chapter 87. I have to say that the story got a lot better. Maybe because there wasn't much on the romance part.

The plot keeps going on as if the "Ch 70 disaster" never happened. It also shows how useless that part was.

I'll keep reading and posting updates. <<less

Used to be good. Looked forward to it. Then the r*pe came. Can't do this anymore. Not worth it. Thought it was going to be a cute story abt misunderstandings. Wish someone had put the r*pe tag before hand. Also, the victim blaming is disgusting. My love has now turned to hate. So disappointed. What's with this epidemic of r*pe in romance stories?

4/5. Couple of boring bits that could be sped through, but everything was nicely concluded.

Misunderstandings, misunderstandings, misunderstandings abound!

MC was sent into a fantasy novel by his father in order to become braver, but oops something happened and he ends up in cannon fodder XZT instead of the protagonist.

... more>> In order to help the protagonist, he lies (and lets the ML continue to misunderstanding, misunderstanding, and misunderstanding) to help the protagonist and continue his own mission.

Mr Overbearing President, er, Overbearing Demon King goes, yes, you must be in love with me so that's why you did all these things. And MC goes, hmm, why not? It makes everything easier.

Then he accidentally, and actually falls in love.

All the MC knows about the ML is from the book, and slowly, he begins to realise that the ML is more than the character in the book, and his own thoughts and feelings.

Spoiler

So much so that he makes the decision to stay in the world with the demon king. But of course, that doesn't happen because Plot occurs.

[collapse]

Pros:

  • Cute interaction between the system and MC.
  • Overbearing Demon King is overbearing, but not that overbearing. Like the MC describes him, the ML's like a kid who hasn't finished school, and only knows how to go buy, buy, buy, when trying to impress the person he loves.
  • HE, 1v1. No unnecessary love triangles (only misunderstood ones)
  • Comedy! There's funny bits scattered throughout the entire story.
Spoiler

MC: No, Protagonist, I'm your father!

ML:......

Protagonist: Noooooo! I don't have a father like you! You abandoned me and my mother! *Acts like a kid who just realised his father was a scum.*

[collapse]

Or:

Spoiler

After their first time:

Hua Feihua: I can smell you guys on each other, hmm, YOU HAD SEX?

ML: *blushes like a virg*n maiden*

MC: (can't let HFH think I'm the bottom and I fainted twice) Y-yeah! We did! So?

HFH: the Demon King's the bottom??!!

[collapse]

Cons:

  • Couple of boring bits that could be sped through.
  • Some might not like the whole, 'im a straight guy! I like girls! I'm not bent' thing
  • Spoiler

Poor Protagonist! Although the world was restored, his memories are all gone! : (

I really liked this story, so much so that I started mtl editing it to make it more readable and then went back to read the edited version. It's cute and funny and overall pretty feel good. The ML isn't nearly as overbearing as in other novels, in fact, until very close to the end he's mostly just awkward and embarrassed about his crush and tries to hide it while still being a mighty demon king. It's really precious. The system is adorable as well and kind of snarky, so... more>> the convo's between them and the MC are fun to read.

I always love it when the MC is capable and just as strong as the ML or vice versa. I never really enjoy damsel in distress tropes so this story is especially enticing to me because the two save each other often. And although the Demon King is stronger, the MC is among the most strong in the demon world.

I haven't completely finished the story yet, since I've gotten to the part where the MC and ML are pretty much together-together so I've lost interest overall, hence the missing one star, but up to this point it's really a joy. I will say that towards the end when their relationship comes to complete fruition, it starts to get a little tropey and the ML is suddenly super overbearing but the rest of the story is really low key and fun with a natural relationship progression and lots of interesting moments. <<less

The plot seems interesting, a timid, over-cautious and too gentle guy having to act as an arrogant to weak, boot-licking to strong, playboy type character. And he isn't allowed to be ooc. Also the demon king (ML) is very cute.

The r*pe in this novel seems to come out of no where. It goes from lighthearted and fun, to r*pe, and back without any explanation. The author blames the MC for the r*pe. They write that both the system and the ML believe the MC was "asking for it" even while the MC is in incredible pain and clearly didn't enjoy it, and didn't want it. The author throws this incredible cruel r*pe scene in an otherwise good story, and it just ruins the story for anyone who doesn't victim... more>> blame and doesn't think r*pe is somw funny thing you can just write off.

Keep in mind that this is a double transmigration novel. While ML may believe he is from that world, he was still originally from mc's normal world. He should know on some level what r*pe is and that it is bad. Yet he r*pes a person who he claims to love. And we are supposed to see this as romantic?

The problem isn't necessarily the r*pe, its how it is how the r*pe is treated. R*pe in an otherwise fluffy and cute novel, with all the characters blaming the victim and saying he deserved it is tonal whiplash. I've read so much r*pe fiction, and I have a pretty high tolerance for it, but I hated this. Why author, why. R*pe just absolutely ruins this story. <<less

I have finally caught up with the latest chapters!

I really like this book. It's hilarious and I love Bai Yang. He's not the damsel in distress kind of character (This tropes always turns me off. I hate characters like that). He is strong and independent and plus points he will do anything to absolutely get out of any bad situation most of the solutions will be ridiculous and probably will get him into more trouble in the future lol. The misunderstandings in this novel are all hilarious. Usually when there... more>> are misunderstandings in any novel they are so boring and I hate them. But with this one I love them all and I love the fact that Bai Yang just goes along with them cuz he has too much on his plate lol.

Demon King: "You love me."

BY (Bai Yang) : " No I don't" (tries to explain it 5 times)

BY: You know what ok fine whatever.

I love this attitude, it's hilarious. And the Demon king......I love him. He's not the overbearing type of demon king. He's a precious cinnamon roll. The way he blushes (more than even Bai Yang) on the crush he has on Bai Yang is so cute and needs to be preserved. The one thing I probably won't forgive demon king for is when he r*ped Bai Yang. If you want to know how the click the spoilers
Spoiler

So the demon king basically has qi deviations from time to time and if he wants to stop it he needs to share his qi (by sex) with another person who happens to be his beloved Bai Yang and so BY is like "cool I'll help you" and demon king is beyond happy but BY was told that as long as he doesn't move then it won't be considered s*x. But then the demon king is so happy that he can sleep with his crush that he ends up moving without BY's consent and above all forgets to share his qi.

[collapse]
That is why This is a 4 stars.

I love the system too! It's so sarcastic and so utterly unhelpful that I love it. The convos between BY and system go like this:

BY: Xiao ling how could I be done by a man. Why does it have to be?

system (Xiao Ling) : Sir you can't really blame him. He's a man. How can expect a man to stop moving once inside?

LOL. I love all the characters. The plot twist was amazing
Spoiler

Demon king finds out that BY is meeting the protagonist Zhou Ying in the human world so he catches them and then before demon king can kill Zhou Ying BY tells that Zhou Ying is his son. LMAO!

[collapse]

Overall if the r*pe wasn't a part of it it would be a solid 5 stars!!

I love this novel. The pacing is great, the humor hits hard, and readers will encounter equal parts hilarity and heartache.

One of the aspects of the novel I can't praise enough is that the author wrote this with a clear outline in mind. I've read a lot of novels with great reviews--eg. Husky and his White Cat Shizun, Heaven Official's Blessing--but frankly they all have issues with golden fingers popping up out of nowhere, sudden new worlds never mentioned before, and dei ex machina galore to solve the authors' tangled... more>> plot lines.

This novel is the definition of clean and contained. Its scenes do not drag on for the sake of word count. New developments are believable and hinted at in past chapters.

Even the misunderstandings are hilarious. For those who hate misunderstanding-based plots, this novel's misunderstandings made me choke on my tea.

The translations on Chrysanthemum Garden are great. I chose to finish reading the rest of this in the original language, but either way the read is satisfying. The author favors use of Chinese idioms.

Spoiler

There is dubious consent/noncon in this, and the treatment of that dubcon is a bit flippant and victim-blaming. This is common in CN BL. It didn't affect my enjoyment but it might lower someone else's.

Why is this rating so low for such an awesome story?

It’s funny and cute and the MC is a little dork.

SPOILERS BUT READ IF OTHER COMMENTS ARE PUTTING YOU OFF

Spoiler

Ok, what happened in chapter 70 is definitely nonconsensual and by no means justifiable. The MC was definitely a victim to the ML at this moment.

What triggered others even worse was the aftermath of it. It’s poor behavior, obviously.

However, as a fictional work, please think about who these characters are. The system is not human and it’s been made clear that although it has sympathy, the empathy is very off. It’s only there to give moral support and reminders to the MC. In its viewpoint, it warned the MC against helping the ML but the MC paid it little mind and went ahead anyway, so in its eyes, the MC was at fault.

As for the ML... do you guys forget he’s the demon king. He orders massacres, sends 2 people to be used as prostit**es, the most feared and powerful man in the DEMON realm. He’s going to be selfish, narcissistic, and similarly lacks empathy like the system. DEMONS are said to more animalistic when it comes to instinct. Him saying he really just couldn’t help it or that he forgot (if uk then uk) was that point of them being DEMONS.

What the ML did was unjustifiable in real world. His actions for him as a character? It’s within expectations. You see those characteristics from the beginning.

The author SHOWS you they understand the actions that happened were completely wrong with the MCs reaction. Idk why people say they went for comedy because the MCs reaction made me feel like he genuinely, and irrevocably, despised the ML and would never forgive him (oh how quickly that resolved). I was upset with him and I was disappointed with him. There was no comedy there. His reaction was realistic.

as for the MC, he’s so naive. So so naive, but at the same time he’s not s*upid. He’s so full of heart and yet willing to do what needs to be done. He’s so easily attached to the demon king from the get go despite his fear of the ML. The MC had so many ways to be out of his relationship with the ML, we see it, the system sees it, and yet he’s the one who persists. That’s his character flaw, to overlook the worst in someone in favor of their best qualities.

Let me tell you that the ML is charming. He’s charismatic and is half wolf dog and half golden retriever. It’s such a weird dichotomy and makes me like his character more. When MC says the ML is so contradictory it really is true. He’s not like the usual MLs we tend to see. He lacks so much emotional intelligence it’s just funny to see him make up whatever makes sense in his head.

So yeah, I don’t agree with the hate to the author. What happened fits into the character setting they established. It’s a five star for me.

Yes, I did read the tags. Yes, I still dropped the story. The thing with tags is that they don't warn you where in the story and in which stage of the relationship the non-con will happen, nor how much of it will there be and how it would be handled. I have nothing against r*pe in fiction if it's used as an important plot tool and gives the characters opportunity to learn and do better. In this story, there's none of that and the whole thing was addressed terribly.... more>> It gave nothing to the plot and was basically a tool to just finally get main characters together. The scene was painful to read but somewhat expected. The author just didn't handle the whole following thing well and I believe this (not the r*pe scene itself) is the main reason for low ratings.

The first half of the story was quite good though and the second part, even with r*pe scene, had so much more potential. <<less

Dropped this for the same reasons others did. I had actually left it unfinished (far past chapter 70) and forgotten the extent of the scenes until rereading from the beginning years later. To the person (s) blaming such unhappy readers for not reading tags, tags don’t indicate which character in a story does something nor how it’s handled in the story. There are novels on here with the same tags that handle the topics beautifully, sometimes it’s not even the ML involved. FYI, the issue people have is not simply... more>> that it happened but how it was written and handled. I appreciated the translator’s warnings on the chapters as well. In certain circumstances I can move past dub-con; it’s rampant in Chinese BL so you get used to it and tolerating becomes a grey area at times. This is a prime example of how my tolerance is circumstantial.

Here, the way it happens, the aftermath and the explicit narrative focus on painting the extent of it as a horrible experience for MC whilst simultaneously having a victim-blaming remorseless ML and system, all set to a “comedic” background was both bizarre and jarring. It made it impossible to brush away or chalk up to cultural kinks. And the fact that it happens multiple times turns a story that had up to then been enjoyable to awkward and uncomfortable to read.

I’ve read awkward/painful first times and reluctant MCs, been uncomfortable. But those stories were written well because they became about character and relationship growth; about the couple learning to be better and honoring and understanding each other. The set up here makes it glaringly clear the author just wants us to find it charming or humorous that the ML continues to be clueless and manipulative even when the MC is angry, bleeding, and passed out. It’s just plain weird. If you’re going to write a well-meaning ML who made a funny mistake, don’t describe such serious wounds and the experience so horribly traumatic for the MC. If you’re going to write a psychopath, do that from beginning to end. If you’re going to write a clueless sociopath, do that from beginning to end. This ML goes from a bit of a prankster who has reasonable misunderstandings to a serial abuser with outright delusions— with no traumatic catalyst; it’s just bad writing.

It just stopped being fun and you stop thinking they’re cute together and start thinking the MC is a poor gaslit sap. So by the near-end, you’re apathetic towards the couple and just reading for the other plot (which isn’t even rich enough to be worth trudging through the “romance”). <<less

Humorous, interesting, and well-paced. I'd recommend this novel to anyone who finds the synopsis interesting and is ok with the tags.

Please ignore the reviews hating on the entire novel due to there being r*pe and s*xual abuse in it, especially the ones that come from people who haven't completed the story.

It's not fair to give the story a bad rating for content that was clearly included in the tags. It's like buying hot coffee, ignoring the warning about it being hot, then blaming the coffee when you burn your tongue.... more>> The reviews from people who haven't read the content in question are even worse, because those reviews aren't even based on the novel itself. So, I actually extremely loved it..... then came ch70. And let me tell you, ch70 ruins everything, all that was shown and established, just falls apart in that ch, you lose all respect for the author as they OOC their characters sooo much, without a single warning. The tone sorta changes to a yaoiverse story, instead of what it was pre ch70, and that was a bl with well developed characters and an interesting, well written plot. Mourning what could've been yet never was.

The r*pe in ch70, just repeats and... more>> repeats, it isn't really described that much so you decide if you want to read or not. Victim blaming is always present, and the MC thinks of it as something he can't reject so might as well let happen. The author seems pretty uneducated on the subject of s*x in general, as they believe u can just shove smth in with no prep if you aren't a virg*n, which is so far from the truth it could stand trial for defamation. As we near the end things just, speed up and go all over the place making it somewhat seem as if the author doesn't really care that much about the work anymore.

When they wake up in the real world, I believe their relationship is way too sudden and taken as a matter of course,

I really liked it in the beginning, but after they get together, everything is just forced by the ML, he really handles the MC like his property. I'm not saying he doesn't care for him, but he doesn't really give him choices or respect what MC wants or is uncomfortable with, it was kinda cute when ML was blushing while admitting their relationship but doesn't really amount for anything. Not very plot heavy and its story is mainly focused on the main leads. However it is a good transmigration + system story. We have a very doting ML and an MC who dotes on the ML in return. The misunderstanding between them makes up a huge portion of the plot but it’s not as annoying as they somehow move the plot forward.

One unique thing about this story is

Who would’ve thought that instead of a love triangle the MC would actually claim that the protagonist he’s trying to protect is his son. I couldn’t stop laughing. Rated it 4 stars just because I usually prefer more action heavy xianxia novels with good cultivation world-building.
