As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

I don't know how to express my feelings of how much of a hell I enjoyed the novel.

First of all, I NEVER enjoyed Historical BL Novels but guess what, this one is The complete opposite of other Historical BL because of JUST HOW AMAZING everything, planned, and precise the details are.

Usually, The reason I never read or enjoyed Historical BL novels is because of how Annoying the ML where the story started off as those shitty plot where the ML treating the MC badly. Gets on the nerve it's disgusting... more>> ugh those ML of other Historical Novels.

I really liked everything about this novel.

A lot of people didn't like the long flashbacks but really...3-5 chapters of flashbacks is long? You guys got to be kidding me right.

I mean like Unless you want to get confused you can go on and skip them... It literally have all the information. You guys really lol...

Anyways this one is incredibly good written story such a masterpiece.

I doubt anything can match up to this when it comes to comparing any other BL novel.

You will enjoy this one I'm sure of it because at first, I always thought all Historical BL novels and that I never liked them at all.

The conflict here is not too complicated like other novels where everything is messed up. It really is enjoyable not frustrating at all and sometimes, you might feel pity or some kind towards the enemies because all of them had a reason and I can relate to them and I never hated a single character in the story so if you hate those annoying cannon fodder roaming around like idiots lol you should start reading now.

Oh and the explicit s*xual stuff are all above 110+ chapters and like really it is really shounen-ai at the start when we are talking about the romance... <<less

I just love how not only the main leads have character developments the side characters changes throughout the stories too. I really admire MC's personality and ML's discipline (like how he do that?) haha the extras are quite sweet n steamy as well. Definitely worth my 5 stars.

I cannot praise the author enough! Everything about this story has been wonderful! From the world building to characters, everything deserves praise.

I watched the donghua first so I had a bit of grasp for the past and present timelines but for someone diving blind can be a bit confusing if you are not paying full attention.

I wasn't a BL fan but after reading MDZS, it opened a whole new BL world for me. This is one story that will always hold a special place in my heart and I hope... more>> you will feel the same at the end of your reading experience! <<less

What can I say? This is the first Chinese Webnovel I have ever read. And I am now down a huge rabbit hole.

Mo Dao Zu Shi was painfully beautiful. The characters are so real and their story is relatable even though the plot and setting aren't reality.

Very few stories can make me cry, and this has made me cry multiple times.

... more>> Wei Ying is so funny and I loved his character.

Lan Zhan was amazing as well.

But, I think I liked Jiang Cheng's arc the best. He hates Wei Ying at first, but by the end can tolerate him. The chapters where the Jiang sect is brought down is the saddest thing I have experienced. It doesn't help that I watched the anime before reading and had a pretty vivid mental image of what it looked like.

But, let's be real.

The best character is Madame Yu. I love me a woman that can beat my ass and put me in my place.

Even though the story is focused on the males in the cultivation world, there are still strong and powerful women in the world!

The romance is not in your face and is very natural. You can see Lan Zhan's love from the beginning, through the subtle looks and hints. Watching Wei Ying slowly develop his love for Lan Zhan through the story keeps you hooked.

Overall, I can say the Mo Dao Zu Shi is one of the best Novels I have ever read, finishing it in a few days. It has re-sparked my joy for reading. Thank you Mo Dao ZU Shi. Thank you Mò Xiāng Tóngxiù.

This is more than just a gay drama.

This a novel where you can ask 10 people their who their favorite character was, you would get varying answers. I think the strongest point of this story is the characters. The plot is good but the way of storytelling might be confusing for some, because author interchanges past and present. Expect very long flashbacks because you will be reading two timelines as you go on.

If you are homophobic I suggest you just watch the live action drama which limits the romance to... more>> "deep friendship" or bromance.

This a masterpiece, I just hope less people will shy away from this story because of the BL genre. I mean people can tolerate stories with racism, sexism, r*pe, violence, torture because they are just stories.

It just happens that in the main character in this story, found out that he liked the guy who trusted him after everyone shunned him. I dont see anything wrong with that. <<less

I watched the show untamed and then decided that I might as well read it. The show was amazing but let me tell you I will forever love the novel. It was better and a lot more plot points made sense. I was hooked on this reading, and blushed a few times. I knew the rough idea based on the show but the novel hit me in the feels. The downside is I'm trying to find something to top it and have yet to do so (little heartbroken about that).... more>> I am in into a wide variety of writings and shows, but his work hit all the points! <<less

The first ever danmei work (heck the first ever BL novel aside from fanfiction) I've ever read, and ohh did it raise my expectations to extremely high levels. I've read many other works after this yet aside from a few, none come close to the brilliance that MDZS is.

The characters, the plot, the art, the anime adaptation, the music scores, the drama EVERYTHING has been such an awesome treat. This work is as close to brilliance as it gets.

Yes, initially I, as a newbie reader, had some trouble grasping the... more>> concepts (kudos to Exiled Rebel Scanlations for their super informative notes, really helped me out) plus the pacing of the work interchanged from pre yiling laozu kick the bucket to post wangji sad single dad phase, took some time but I got used to it AND ended up appreciating the way it was written. All the realizations, the threads, all revealed so tastefully nomnom.

And do I need to mention the post - reading emptiness? It took over my life and I wasn't able to cope with it ending so fast! (Reading record finished it in 48 smthing hours skskks its just so ENGROSSING)

Its been more than an year since I read this yet to date, Lotus Pier and Zixuan Yanli ***** still makes me cry SO BAD just thinking about it.

If you don't read it you're doing a disservice to yourself hmmhmm <<less

It has an amazing plot! The characters are likable and it's easy to sympathize and see where the MC and ML are coming from. It's slow burn with the romance since there's so much to do with the plot but the development is sweet.

PS: the smut at the end was really good

I saw the drama first, and of course, I fell in love with WY and LZ. I just have to read the novel and I am glad that I did. I love the kindness, respect, and integrity that WY and LZ have towards each other. When everyone doubts and is against WY, LZ was the only person that fights for him. His love for WY is strong and tender. WY as our MC is a strong leader, he cares for righteousness and fights for the weak and the old. He... more>> cannot stand to see those that are in power mistreated the poor and innocent. I agreed with everything that WY did, the path that he chooses when that is the only path that his circumstance sets for him. His love for his friends and family is so pure and kind, you just cannot dislike him. Love the Nie, Lan and Jiang sects. However, the Jiang sect holds a special place in my heart. WY cares deeply for his sect, and his strong tied with his sister, Yanli, and annoying brother, Jiang Cheng. Even though he's not their real brother, they all treated everyone with love and kindness. Although I find myself disliking JC, in the end, I sympathized with him too. This is definitely one of my favorite BL novel, and it was entertaining, funny and loveable. Wei Ying is just so funny, witty and smart. He's so likable that you can imagined yourself with him when you read the novel. Sometimes, he's ridiculous and shameless too, but that's why I like him so. He is who he is, witty and smart. <<less

Nie huaisang is a chraracter that makes me really sad, he lost his brother and had to became someone he never wanted to. Jin guangyao had some reasons to feel wronged by people but he did not have the right to just kill Mingjue and point fingers at Wei Wuxian, I pity him, he was alone and the only person he trusted was in the end the one who killed him <<less

This is the first BL novel, and first CN novel I have ever read, and it immediately takes the top spot on the best online novel I have ever read. I agree with the opinion of the masses, regardless of whether you like BL or not, (as most people are hesitant to read this because of the BL) this is still a amazing novel.

I loved this enough to reread it four times, and OH HOW I CRIED every time I read it. Everything about this novel is stunning. The... more>> plot is gold. The story is a brilliant mix of Action, Fantasy, Romance, Comedy, Drama and tragedy. The pacing is perfect. The characters are ALL well developed, on par with the development of the main characters.

The main pairing is ridiculously cute, and my favourite pairing of any media to date. I have no qualms about it. The only thing irritated me is THAT I DIDN'T WANT IT TO END AAAAAAAAAAAAAA ???? <<less

I have read this novel thrice, and I cant help coming back to it every now and then. All the characters have been portrayed so well, and my heart beats for Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. Its a perfect mix of angst, thrill and heart-rendering scenes. And the translators have done such a wonderful job, thank you so much, translator-nim~~

I just have a problem with the lack of outstanding female characters, WWX's r*pe kink (that just spoiled the mood for me), and the stereotype of a woman that was upheld throughout the novel. And whats up with the LACK OF LUBE?!!! Hello, LUBE IS NECESSARY!

Why not 5 stars?

I'll go over what I think the strengths and flaws of this book are, but at the very top, I'd just like to say, there is no r*pe in this book, but there are some ify scenes, they weren't enough for me to leave this book behind, but in case it makes you uncomfortable, down in the area that says spoiler I'll vaguely explain what I mean by ify, and you can decide wether that's okay with you or not.

Okay, getting into it's strengths!

... more>> Characters: 5 stars

The characters were all amazing, all seemed very human (despite the fact that they can do magic) and you could probably find faults and strengths in all characters, bad, good, or somewhere in between, which in my opinion, makes a character good, along with a unique personalty and a backstory as to why they are how they are. To be honest, the juniors were probably my favorite characters, but it's hard to pick favorites. The juniors, despite having the least backstory, and depth, all brought a different point of view or even just way of talking about the same thing, and over all were really funny and enjoyable. Anyways, the characters were amazing, and I haven't seen such well made characters in any sort of book in quite a while.

Plot: 5 stars

I love the fact that this is an LGBT+ romance novel, but at the same time, it's not. The romance is definitely a key part of the book, but I'd describe it as more of an action/adventure/mystery that just happens to have a gay couple as the lead characters, and I like that a lot. As a lesbian, I often gravitate more towards LGBT+ books of any sort just because it's something I can relate to more, but often times it will have a sad ending, or a toxic dynamic that is played off as fine, or they're straight but "you're the only boy/girl I'll ever love" instead of just making the character bi and prefer the opposite gender more. Or there's just over all no plot and it's just a book fetishizing gay or lesbian relationships.

This book on the other hand has an incredible plot, that just doesn't seem to get boring, exciting fight scenes, humor, deep relationships, wether romantic, platonic, or between siblings, the way they keep you in the dark about information that Wei WuXian doesn't know so everything as just as surprising to you as it is to him is just flawless.

I would say, my one flaw with the plot is that sometimes the flash backs can get a little long, but I understand why they are, and they give incredible backstory that leaves you wondering how in the world MXTX could come up with all of this and make it fit so well and make so much sense.

I dunno what else there is to talk about when reviewing the book, so I'm going to get on into the ify parts. I have them in spoiler brackets, just so it's easier to find if you're looking specifically for that or don't want to read them. I won't get descriptive about what happens, just context and characters feelings on the matter. Okay, here we go.

Spoiler

There are three scenes in this book I would consider ify. I will talk about the first two together, since they are somewhat related, and I will cover the third one last.

the first scene is just a kiss, so you may or may not find it a big deal, but I still felt it had to be included.

Wei WuXian drinks a little and then gets Lan WangJi drunk and intends on harmlessly teasing Lan WangJi, just play around with him cuz he thinks WangJi's funny when drunk. WangJi has been in love with Wei WuXian for quite some time now and so when drunk, when their playing hide and seek and Wei WuXian jokes that if he catches Lan WangJi, he'll lick his hand. And drunk WangJi likes that idea and comes over and lets Wei WuXian "catch" him. Wei WuXian's kind of confused but licks his hand anyways and he ends up kissing WangJi and the mouth before stopping himself.

The second one, which is the last to take place, also involves being drunk. Once again Lan WangJi gets drunk and after causing a mess in town, the two head back and Wei WuXian is persuaded into washing WangJi by WangJi. Wei WuXian tries to leave cuz he knows he's gonna do something and ends up touching WangJi's abs and privates. WangJi pulls him into the tub, the go on to have s*x. WangJi sobers up and freaks out cuz he had never planned on confessing to Wei WuXian and Wei WuXian realizes he should have stopped himself. They both had alcohol in their system, but only WangJi was drunk.

The last one has nothing to do with alcohol and it's where WangJi kisses Wei WuXain while Wei WuXian is blindfolded and they make out for a little while before WangJi runs away. Wei WuXian doesn't know who it was

There is consentual s*x later in the book, but those are the things I thought people should at least be warned about before heading into the book.

[collapse]

So that was all for this review. If any of that makes you uncomfortable, don't read the book. If you're fine with that, go ahead, the plot is amazing and the characters will make you smile and cry and so much more! <<less

I read this after watching the donghua and I was quite surprised by the differences between the show and the novel. Overall I liked the order of the novel better than the donghua which jumps all over without much of anything actually happening. The novel also had more detailed scenes, and definitely made me cry a lot more at the heartbreaking scenes than the show did. Although I like the pacing and how the story is set, I feel like a lot of the story has scenes that are portrayed... more>> as very important, yet do not carry any importance after the curtain drops. Once the scene is over that's it, there's nothing more about it. To me this feels like being fed a forkful of cake only to have the rest of the cake thrown in the tr*sh. How am I supposed to move on that quickly? I form an emotional attachment to these characters and then they are never seen again? It would be better not to introduce them in the first place or downplay their importance. That's just my personal opinion though when I was reading the story. Although the ending felt rather lacking in effort, it was pretty much an 'okay everyone, it's finally over, ' kind of ending, I felt satisfied when putting the novel down. To me this was a pretty good read for the emotional ups and downs, but definitely not something I would read over again. <<less

I want to say that this is first thing which forced me to read so many. I didn't read novels before. I can't describe such story because of plot so thought out and that has strong characters, many details which I don't remember, dramatic stages. The story full of flashbacks which help understand intentions of everyone.I love almost all of them. But my favorite character probably Jiang Chen I really love him. I like his interactions with his family and other. That has many plot twists and tragic events where... more>> you will cry. I like that plot don't concentrate at the BL it's mean that novel interesting in itself. I like thriller and horror here. Developing relationship main characters touching and amusing. This is best couple heh. The person with stone face and very noisy and cheerful lover who often teases him and always wants his attention. They complement each other. Although they experienced many sorrowful things together and I happy that they at last can be happy together. This story hits all my requirements. It's got the sweeping saga, family, angst, lovers devoted to each other, you name it. The plot is solid, but also leaves room for the imagination to fill in. It's got hilarious hi jinks, and tragedy and political intrigue.

The main characters both have their emotional arcs that let them fail and grow and succeed, and it's just beautiful.

This is one of the BEST novels I ever read online. It has everything I like. Great story, interesting and colorful characters, romance, drama, adventure, magic and BL also. I never got uninterested or tired reading it. I watched the live-action version first, and I really loved it. Than I started reading the novel in English and I was lost in the first chapter. It didn't want to let me go, but I didn't even want to escape.

It got better and better with every chapter, and even it's BL it's... more>> not full of s*x and other things. And this is good! I love it, when the main couple falls in love with eachother slowly. I'm not at the end yet, but close. And I can hardly wait to end it, so I can start reading it again.

Thank you MXTX for writting this wonderful story for us! I love you! And I love your characters and wonderful story also! *.* <<less
