From infancy to maturity, what Ye Zhou dislikes the most was “two”.

The reasons were: he was ranked second at home, he had been forever ranked second at school, no matter how diligently he worked and tried, he couldn’t shake off that “second” curse. What was more exasperating was that, at University, not only was he ranked second, but even his appearance that he was proud of had to be classified as second best!

Why can’t I obtain the first place!

The eternal second will rise!

Then, Ye Zhou, after his vigorous efforts finally rises and the result was… the first became his boyfriend.

This is the story of a man who has been forced to be “second” and how he became the first, most popular.

Very cute and fluffy. If you're looking for a nice quick read I would definitely recommend this novel. The progression of their romance is natural and both handle it like mature adults. MC and ML are equal and independent partners without any unnecessary drama.

Although it lacks the yaoi tag, this novel has one explicit scene.

Honestly, I guess this review doesn't have to be taken seriously as I've only read until chapter 18, but I just can't stand it anymore. In the first place, their relationship seems forced. Especially with the MC's friends' tactics, how can he tolerate them messing up basically everything just to set MC and ML up together. It's like they don't understand the meaning of boundaries or personal business.

the story is really annoying at start

those misunderstandings <where no one choose to believe mc>

ML being like I dont care <but hes the only one with gd brain here>

... more>> MC being a total pushover and worrying about others <even tho its mentioned he never argued with his classmates >cant he tell them that he doesnt like the way they are shipping him

those frnds doing whatever they like instead of asking for opinion and growing misunderstandings <it was mentioned no one takes MC seriously in class >

ML was also surprised when MC started getting close to him and thought he wouldnt wanna be close to a person who would make him feel pressured for always being second

also made me realise not to focus on ratings, _, I cant read further as im annoyed

will complete someday hopefully <<less

4.25/5*

I found it difficult to rate. This story was very sweet and cp is lovely!

However, at my first try 1y ago, I dropped after chapter 7 or so. Perhaps my mindset wasn't right back then to appreciate it fully, but those early chapters were too dull to my taste.

... more>> My 2nd try was 2 months ago. Again, put it on hold for same reason.

Finally, I managed to finish the 3rd time, and I read it in 1 day. Conclusion —-> it gets better the more you read!! Both ML and MC will grow on you.

GOOD POINTS:

- except for the fact that ML is another super good looking boy that is always 1st without studying... the rest feels super real. Both MC and ML are real characters that you can meet in real life. So, their love also feels so ordinarily good!! It is like watching a great movie drama and love it a lot whilst I'm normally not fond of this genre. But because it is so good, you can't help but love it

- their love is like the strawberries seedlings they grow, or an excellent glass of red wine... it has to slowly grow or ferment. The process also felt like that. You will cherish it more when you can finally taste it!

- It took a while before they get together, but as soon as they did, it goes fast from there! Also, s*x scene is satisfying. I wish there was more fluff but maybe if it had, the story felt less real. Another henpecked ML would be tooth rotting but that would be ooc and not realistic here. ML loves MC in a normal, mature, realistic way.

WARNING

- The writing is slow pacing AND the romance is slow burn. Slow burn applies to both ML/MC... AND it is slice of life. Usually, I can't handle this kind of combination that almost 100% guarantees that it is too boring for me. Why it took me 3 attempts to finish this story. But I'm glad I did. It was worth it.

- See point above: If you are like me in this regard, be prepared that it may take till chapter 25 or so before you find charm in this story. And even then in the end... you might find it too ordinary in comparison to those highly exciting action packed stories, or those stories filled with dog blood and face slapping (which sometimes is just what you need depending on your mood) <<less

"He was driven out of the house yesterday and Shang Jin gave him a home today." — I read Everyone Thinks I Like Him out of boredom (actually it was because I was pretty hesitant to finish AYA) but nonetheless, this story made me feel elated. I've even come to such an extent where I fell in love with all of the side characters in this novel *sobs* Zhou Wendao, Liu Yuntian, Wen Renxu, Xu Yangjun, Zhan Xing, we single dogs shall meet again.

I’m sobbing. This is so heartwarming, finally... more>> my Zhou Zhou cabbage found his home. Shang Jin feels like home, he smells like home. This story made me laugh, fall in love and cry. Perhaps, I will reread this next year and revisit the wonderful memories I had in this masterpiece. Author, thank you for writing such a good story. Translator, thank you for bringing this to life. <<less

Uhm, for me this is a flat 3 ⭐

I do enjoy slice of life but this doesn't satisfy me. First I was a little bit intrigued by the MC's problem about his parents but after I finished reading the story, I don't think it was resolved. Second the slow romance really drags us out, the pacing is too slow then it ubruptly ended. Third MC and ML are too generic. Fourth, I just finished reading this minutes ago but I'm starting to forget the story, which means this really doesn't... more>> leave an impact for me. Fifth, what happened to the other characters?

I still recommend this because the straight forwardness of the storytelling and no redundant details, it's actually a nice read. Best to read if you have a lot of free time too. <<less

This was such a fun read. No major plot but also no angst or drama, just a sweet fluffy slice of life story about two college kids and their funny as hell roommates.

If you've read something nasty and it left a bad taste in your mouth or if you read an emotionally draining book and just need a break filled with sweet nothings then I recommend this. It will warm you up and get you ready for your next heartache (I'm talking to all you emotional masochists out there ??... more>> You know yourselves)

The family dynamics was a touchy topic (If you have siblings and narcissistic parents you'll know) but it didn't take up too much of the story-Probably less than a chapter-and I was okay with that. I came here for a good time and I got what I came for. 10/10 would recommend. <<less

fun and more humorous than I expected, especially after the rough start at the beginning. I wish i, too could worship at the Shang Ye alter before finals/ presentations/ dissertation. The test gods are something I could actually get behind.

as for the story, I love the friendship that develops between the two and the fact that both are fairly equal, though this being Chinese, they aren't presented as a reversible couple (I've never seen a reversible couple in Chinese BL so if you know of any, please recommend). As someone... more>> who very much dislikes when the MC is presented as a girl in everything but physical gender, (especially the s*upid, need to be rescued all the time types), I am grateful for stories like this where the MC is smart and retains his normal brain function even after getting together with the ML. It's also nice not to see an abusive, obsessive, domineering ML for a change. There is a little bit of angsty parent stuff but it was handled very well and I thought in the end it was fairly realistic because

Spoiler

my cousin is gay and his parents reacted like YZs and haven't spoken to him in five years while his husbands parents accepted them, so their situation was very similar to the MC and ML

If you're looking for a good light-hearted read, mixed with a bit of angst here and thereㅡ or just something to make you smile and giggle, then I recommend this book to you!

I wish there were more novels like this, it helps me be at ease and think about my terrible life choices. Both ML and the MC are intelligent, but they're both kinda clueless about their feelings. They trust and love each other a loooot that it hurts my teeth. Their friends are so cute too, though they often... more>> misunderstood those two, they're still very very supportive of their relationshipㅡ not only them actually, but the entire school! The fact that every students worship accepts their relationship regardless of their gender gave this easy and nice atmosphere that made it even ?????????? To read. I don't know how to explain that, let's just say you feel more "flowery" when reading it. Like that shiny flower BG effect in mangas lol

Definitely one of my favorite novel in 2018, and probably in my top 5! Thank you so much to the translators for doing such a great job! ≫ㅁ<) 99 <<less

This novel is so GOOD. 4.6/5 for me. Hands down my favorite I've read this year so far - and I LOVED "I just want to be in a relationship". Aaaa I got way too attached to these characters, how am I supposed to move on T-T.

First of all, read this. PLEASE. It's so good. The story is very well written, the translations are also pretty good for the most part, and these characters are super likeable.

Then, I'd like to warn that from here onwards this is my least coherent... more>> and mos unhinged review ever.

Ye Zhou is a perfect protagonist! I was a fan of Ye Zhou from the start, he's hilarious but he's also a really nice person, despite unintentionally gaslighting himself at times. Regarding Shang Jin, he's such a great love interest, he slowly grows on you just as he does to the main lead and he's just so akadnskfnsjfbajdnakxsjcbsj

All the side characters are really great too and I couldn't help but want to keep reading so I could know all that happens to them.

This novel was also a huge page turner, it's critical final exams season and I developed an unhealthy obsession over this novel so I may or may have not neglected my studies : (but still, worth it!! This novel gave me happiness and serotonins which I was really in need of. Reading it until 4 and 5 am might not have been my best choice but oh well. Maybe I'll end up blessed in my studies by Shang Ye just like most their classmates, first and second place please give me some blessings 🙏.

Regarding the CP, they're meant for each other, they love each other, let them be happily ever after. The way they're fit just like puzzle pieces aaaaaaaa can we have a sequel

Spoiler

I also got a strange urge to eat strawberries... Shang Ye what are you doing to me! I want someone to give me two wildflowers too T-T

[collapse]

The way they go from strangers to lovers, all the steps in between, it's all so much fun to read, I was never, ever, bored with this novel, NEVER. Instead, I thought about it all the time, even when I should be studying. So, if you're like me and you can't separate family problems and work, don't read it during a time where you should be studying :| or do, and like me, pray to Shang Ye.

Spoiler

Maybe I'm in my Shang Jin era and can have a great grade while reading a random novel instead of studying. Where's my Ye Zhou tho 😭😭 Praying to Shang Ye for love and good grades 🙏 (I THINK I MIGHT BE IN MY SHANG JIN ERA, MY GRADES WERE GREAT, THANK U SHANGYE)

[collapse]

hope you have fun reading and all of you have a nice day ~

P.S.:
Spoiler

Wish you all lots of success for your exams, let's hope Shang Ye can live harmoniously happily ever after so we don't have a disastrous exam week and continue to have good grades 💪

I finished this a while ago but it didn’t leave a lasting impression. All I remember are bits and pieces. Either way if I finished it fully then I’m sure I enjoyed it back then. It’s definitely the kinda book you reach for to cure boredom, so if you’re bored and looking for a fluffy piece, go for it!

What can I say? It's just lovely. A lovely slice of life with the element of bringing the characters and story to life. And do I agree with the bad reviews? Not at all. If you're looking for something light, I think this is a good fit. However, everyone has different preferences I cannot force so you may think otherwise. So before reading this novel I want to ask:

    1. Are you bored?
    2. Are you looking for something light and fluffy but not all fluff? Some troubles intertwined here and there.
    3. Are you looking for a look stereotypical cold-iceberg on the outside but a human on the inside ML?
    4. Are you tired of dimwit MCs?
    5. Do you like slow-burn romance?
    6. Do you like relationships and resolutions with no unrealistic standards imposed on them?
    7. Are you looking for something fun and you won't take too seriously in regard to side character antics towards MC (added for comedic effect) ?
If you answered yes to all of them, read it. Hopefully, it'll be your taste. I personally loved it. Hehe and there was a surprising small smexy chapter to top it off.

I was at first planning to give it four stars. The MC the ML the side characters like everything is so cute the misunderstandings aren’t frustrating but rather really funny and till the last 10 chapters the tone of the story was really light-hearted though still was kinda cliché. But the thing that made me give this 5 stars was the last 10 chapters or so. I loveddddd their coming out stories. I liked how the novel (the author) showed in countries like China where people are still biased towards... more>> lgbtqia+ the struggles of coming out and the consequences of it. Our ML’s coming out story wasn’t smooth but at the end his family still accepted him though in contrast our MC’s coming out wasn’t good at all and resulted in him being thrown out from the house/family. The best part of the novel is how after being thrown out of the house, the ML said to the MC that he’ll be his family from now on. Seriously so beautiful and realistic since not everything goes too smooth in real life like in the typical bl novels. People suffer a lot trying to come out to their parents/family. The most emotional thing of it all was maybe the way MC was shocked that his father put him (a gay man) in the same category as a mu*derer or a criminal. MC suffered a lot and I can really empathize with him in every aspect. It isn’t easy being constantly put under pressure of academic success, the parents expecting a lot from the children and always comparing them to someone else really destroys a child’s self-esteem and psychology in general. It really hurt seeing how he was trying to defend himself saying this is how he was born and he wanted to live the life he wanted with the one he loved. Totally liked it the last chapters were an amazing surprise for me seriously recommended!!! <<less

Waaah!!! 😍😍😍 After long time I read a whole story in one go!! Why?

Because it was so fun reading, I laughed out by my self looking at my phone so many times it wouldn't be a wonder is my sis gave me 'she is finally gone mad reading too much' look😑

Not just fun the flow of story character build, distribution of emotions, rational and some irrational yet funny (like the Shang Ye religion) and really enjoyed it whole. It my cup of tea with my favorite cookies along.

You shouldn't miss... more>> out other characters apart from the main characters, there friends family everyone plays role in the development and completion of the story it made more approachable.

I really want to recommend it to as many as I can but reading my review am not sure if it can make someone want to read but if it did it makes me super happy 😄

Thanks for such an wonderful story author 😍😍 (I don't know what else I can say, thank you and love ya)

And thank you so much for the translator for even when medium changed I felt every single bit of the story through your work thanks for the hard work 😍😍

PS: I rarely write reviews so sorry if it too bland and formal, but can't help I just love the story!!! <<less

I finished this in barely four hours, which shows how addicting this book is.

I can't say it's very outstanding, or very deep plot-wise, but it's quite a cute novel, with a light romance and the occasional chicken soup. The romance isn't really in-depth, and the plot at most, is "better than average". However, there's no shortage of dog food, the moments they spend together are quite fluffy, and it's quite nice to see two people with a large yearning for family love come together and build a new family.

A bonus... more>> is no IQ lowering after getting together, no impulsive decisions like "throwing away the gift he gave me because I confessed to him but he rejected me but in reality he likes me back"or really unnecessary drama. The whole parent ordeal is and dealing with coming out is quite realistic, I suppose. Makes me wish people could understand other people and be more tolerant.

Of course, not every one would like this novel, but I'd recommend it anyway. Sorry for the bad English and have a nice day. <<less

Honestly the start was really difficult to get through because I felt the situation was more humiliating than funny. After all if you tell your friends something and they don't believe you, at a certain point it stops being funny and becomes ugly. MC has a lot more patience with his friends than I do, because there were multiple times that I was so furious that I almost stopped reading. His friends basically thought he was a liar till the end. I don't care what the school thought because you... more>> can't control rumours, but the friend behaviour was a bit condescending and intrusive. Although the story does tell that the MC has a problem of being too lax with his friends, I still wish there was a moment of realization that you shouldn't take advantage of someone's good will.

It is a short-ish story though and I know not everyone would feel this way. After all this kind of 'misunderstanding' trope is very popular so if you're like me just keep reading because overall the story is okay.

i AM glad though that all misunderstandings were cleared between MC and ML. The relationship build up was good and the characters were well-fleshed out, on both their good and bad points so they felt realistic. I liked the implicit understanding and the sense of connection between them. They make a good couple. <<less

The characterization has depth. The seemingly cold ML is just careful about his actions. The "naïve" MC is actually reasonable in dealing with the people around him. The group of friends who are considered meddlesome are supportive idiots who has their own interpretations. Those who accepted them but not their sexuality and those who accepted them fully. Those who do not care but gave offerings just to pass their exams.

Their relationship started with a misunderstanding and strengthened into friendship before they became lovers. They actually TALK about their problem. The... more>> ML give the MC some space to think. He's not arrogant or oppressive, the usual gong we see in Chinese light novels. The MC face the ML with his real feelings.

No unnecessary drama!

Sweet, lovely read and a beautiful touch of slice of life. <<less
