After leading a life of luxury, Aria unfairly meets death because of her sister Mielle’s schemes. And right before she dies, she sees an hourglass fall as if it were a fantasy. And just like that, she was miraculously brought back to the past.

“I want to become a very elegant person, just like my sister, Mielle.”

In order to face the villainess, she must become an even more wicked villainess. This was the new path Aria chose to take revenge on Mielle who mu*dered both her and her mother.

I think this novel could've been more enjoyable if Mielle didn't have the IQ of a wet flushable. Overall, I enjoyed the novel ofc; it's a classic feel good novel. MC avanges her first time, everything goes to her way, she's smart AND beautiful AND charming. I read it when I want to have a good time.

But yeah.

Mielle is so pathetic, it doesn't feel like a strugle at all. The second lead is bland to me but tbh even the ML has no spice. I wish there were more comflicts... more>> and that Mielle fought back/thwarted Aria's plans more.

This novel is overkill, it's still good but yeah. <<less

no idea why the ratings are so low like honestly.

the translator was sort of hard to understand but tbh the novel was so good that I didnt even care about that.

i was in love with aria since the moment she started playing games with mielle and I am not lying when I say I WILL do everything to marry her. Everything.

the FL was the perfect mix of revenge, villainous and intelligence.

Spoiler

she became a sucessful businesswoman with enough money to be able to provide herself and her mother a comfortable life. Which ALOT of others fail to do or end up losing sight of their goals cause ML enters

[collapse]

the mother was a lowkey character but being a prostitute and still raising aria with all her ability and even bringing her along after marriage is smth I respect alot.

ML is COOL cool like, , , , , COOL. Their interactions are very naturally brought in and the relationship grows slowly from mutual curiosity. There are misunderstandings but all get solved once communication starts and THEN relationship starts

Spoiler

he says that he will love her even if she went back to the bad, villanous woman when aria asked him and honestly speaking, we lack this in this genre ALOT.

[collapse]

ML was fully aware of all the schemes aria was pulling and even took part in it and said that he trusts her unconditionally. He helped her alot in the entire downfall arc.

all in all the schemes may not seem very intricate or extremely evil but the opponent is still 15 years old so yeah, understandable. But the end result? Amazing. Truly <<less

For me, this one has been an "okay" read. I'm not much of a revenge-driven plot sucker but I do enjoy reading elaborate schemes and such. However, I am not that convinced with the reason for revenge here.

I get that she was sentenced death in her prev life but she admitted to have done and acted wrong. It may have been the result of her naivety and gullibility and Mielle's plots but nonetheless it was her actions that brought her to that point. And when she was given a "retake"... more>> she did them too much. At her 2nd time she corrected her way of thinking and her actions. I also think that those petty schemes about firing staff and jealousy stuff were within acceptable range but how she ended it was really too much for me. I don't think there's a need for her to do "it" when she have returned the same (even more) suffering to Mielle. Although that girl's sentence was well deserved for another reason.

Anyway I don't see anything else that's notable to be honest. Like I said it was okay.

I did enjoy her teasing the ML and the tension (hehe). Their relationship was also cute. That's pretty much all I can say. <<less

I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of the book, but found the ending a bit tedious. I thought the extras were a bit of a missed opportunity to explore the other characters, from their perspective, or delve a bit more into what happened to the crown prince in the original timeline (my personal imagining is that he was playing subservient and eventually managed to overthrow Isis on his own)

I absolutely love how strong yet imperfect the female characters are - they don't really on the men or their significant... more>> others for anything. They see what they want and then use all the tools in their possessions to get it. Sure, this means they're not always good people, but most that's much more realistic than someone who is always perfect. They feel very human. And throughout the course of the book, you see that villainy is many times the result of circumstances, which I think is a valuable lesson. People might seem evil because of their background and what they've learned from others around them. But given a different set of motivations and opportunity, even villains can do good on the world, to the point that others think of them as saints.

I loved the feminism in the book - how some businessmen's wives strive to contribute to the business, and will eventually try to balance family and work against society's expectations. I wish the noble women were a bit more diverse rather than painted with the same bland brush. It felt like after spending all the time developing empathy for the common people, and helping the readers see them as people, the author decides that the rich people weren't worth showing as people. They were much more one dimensional, either pure good or pure greed.

The most disappointing part of this book was the ending. There was a touching bit about how the main character learned to find happiness through the friendships she unexpectedly made, but that rang false as the rest of the ending was focused on how the main character could now revert to bring "evil". Not letting go of her revenge and even killing people who had truly repented in order to fully reverse the scenario like she wished.

Spoiler

I honestly felt sorry for the father, brother, and sister. The father and brother seemed to truly repent, and sure, it was only after tasting the pain of loss, but didn't the main character only change after realizing how she was betrayed and tricked? Even the sister seemed like she might be able to change given sincere guidance, but wasn't really given the chance to because of mistreatment and bad advice. The inability of the main character to let go of get revenge just made the book a bit unsatisfying - she's very motivated and smart, but why should we root for her to change her past vs any of the other characters?

[collapse]

I was also disappointed by how the book started out by being very conscious of beauty as just a tool, and not an indication of good or evil. But towards the end, the author falls into the typical pit of incessantly describing everyone's beauty for no reason.

Basically, the mystery, plot, and characters as set up in the beginning of the book was absolutely marvelous. However, if I were to rate just based on the ending, I would have given this book a 3 star. <<less

I tried to read this twice but I got bored both times. Farthest I got was ch.163. This should have been a good novel but it was boring. I found every character boring. There was no comedy to lighten the mood and the author didn’t really spend a lot of time building the characters personalities. Especially the MC, besides revenge there’s not much to her character. She doesn’t invest time into building genuine relationships and it made the story boring since every move was planned. I don’t like stories where... more>> u know what’s going to happen next unless it’s done well. It seems like everything in her life is as planned out way ahead of time which it was. Disappointing truly. <<less

Villainess Reverse Hourglass started with your typical turn back to the past troupe before MC died. MC is not your typical innocent person, indeed she was evil and go back to the past to avenge her misery in 1st timeline. The final epilogue from the spin off was.... weird. It kinda gave you an unwanted closure but nevertheless it closed the story for good. My suggestion is just read until the main book epilogue, the spin off is only a "keeping up with" story.

Plot: 4/5

It revolves around the revenge so... more>> the plot is really consistent from beginning to end.

Character: 2.5/5

The only thing that keeps the story progressing is Aria, the other characters are kinda subpar even the ML. But it's understandable since how the story narrated is from MC and MC kinda treated others like pawns or puzzle. Her POV really affects on devalue others.

Story narration: 3/5

Good, but I think it needs some improvement on when the narration moved to other characters.

Final: 3/5

it's interesting, but my final verdict is OK. it's good in the middle, not that great but not bad. <<less

The plot isn't bad, but the writing is terrible. The dialogues are bland and leave no impression. I cannot stand the ML, and the MC's rage and bloodthirst are infectious.

One morning, I was rudely awoken by my sister. In my sleep-deprived and confused state, I thought my sister to me was like Mielle to Aria. I was prepared to kill her and then myself once I regained some strength, but after I showered, I realized I wasn't thinking straight and that I actually loved my sister. 4/10 would not recommend.

TL:DR Pretty good story crippled by bad translation and or writing

If you like complicated revenge plots with a serious Mary Sue MC this may well work for you. Another take would be to imagine a Mexican telenovela filtered through Japan then translated into English.

The problem is the writing. It's very easy to make drinking games revolving around over used words. Saint, sinner and wicked need to be avoided to prevent alcohol poisoning. There's also endless pronoun misuse, repeating sentence fragments, and names for God's sake consistently translate them. Just figuring... more>> out who is speaking can be quite the chore

Could have been a 5 but no <<less

Spoiler

I am quite unsatisfied by the abrupt ending, I thought there would be a grand wedding... but I supposed, their engagement ceremony was so grand that writing it might be redundant.

I hoped there would be some mention on how their marriage life continues, with descendant and so on, and her relationships further with her family in the neighbouring kingdom.

[collapse]

MC's character is quite my taste, calculating and sly, but not purposely harming the innocents.

Although, I am not quite satisfied with how some inconsistency and plot holes remain like how
Spoiler

easily ML and MC revealed their secret power. It was even worse for ML since he abruptly came to jail unseemingly without reason and spoke about it with Mielle.. and there was a jailer there who isn't someone important or close to him. He might have revealed it.

[collapse]

or how

Spoiler

the villains easily, foolishly, get into their trap. You would have think Isis would be more careful about her rebellion despite being pressured for success.. even his brother realized that it might be a trap.

Another example would be how Mielle repeatedly nodded and did everything Aria planned for her. Emma was her 'mother' right? I would have hated someone to death over her death if I was Mielle, but she only grieved her on the first months. Of course, there was survival and her self-interest, but I can't believe she easily believed Aria nearing her end.

If talking about someone of her side, I would talk about Sarah, her dear best friend and tutor. I am wondering where exactly MC used her.. bettering her rumour didn't really do much as lightening it on a tiny bit since there still nobles who insult her directly to her face. Every time there was a crisis, Sarah would give her 'support', but its more of a wordy reassurance than real help. Nearing the end, the help she provided by being a teacher and headmaster was more of something she would do out of her own will... so I can't understand her repeated guilt where she was sure she would use Sarah when Sarah would had unconditionally helped MC, yet MC didn't actually used it for real.

[collapse]

Also
Spoiler

the royal pond and how Chloe instability was never touched further. The original King was more of a background fixture than a character, why would the man holding supreme power be so unnoticed? It was so weird, even there was no mention of his character beside cowardice at handling the power of the nobles. Lese majeste is a legit crime in this series, but he was so timid. Moreover, ML's mother or how the structure of the royal family was never touched upon, too, despite there being mentions of illegitimate princes or princess existing.

[collapse]

I quite enjoy the process and I am sure the translating team was doing their best despite some awkward hiccups, and I would recommend it to other readers. This novel made me speculate and MC's thought wasn't shallow but not sharp sharp enought to be 'the smartest'. ML and MC relationship isn't toxic and actually quite loving, regardless of how wicked they could be to hostile party. Their character didn't clash much besides in the beginning.

I hope you enjoyed it as I do.

Nice MC and ML relationship with partnership and friendship.

I was so sad to read periods of loneliness of MC, it felt like my close friend had a hard time and I couldn't comfort her.

Revenge is nice ans satisfying as planned, althrough I still think that Aria is kind, that she didn't go any thurther

Happy ending~

I loved the MC. She was a villain through and through and I am SO HERE FOR IT. For all the people complaining that MC is *insert negative trait, * did you forget the title of this story? She's not supposed to be a good person!! This is a story about a morally-questionable, petty, vicious woman who uses every tool in her arsenal to f**k over those who led to her eventual death in the last life.

Ah~ Her personality is such a breath of fresh air in this genre.

... more>> And it makes sense how she became so warped and twisted too.

I'm tired of so-called villainesses actually being misunderstood saints. Nah, give me a bad woman and I want to watch her thrive.

Pros

    • This is a revenge tour de force. The villainess MC never forgets those who have wronged her, and makes them pay tenfold. She is manipulative, harsh, petty, and thorough... and I loved it. This woman is not f**king around! Basically MC goes fully white lotus on the OG white lotus and crushes her, her sponsor, her family, her lover, you name it.
    • Unlike what a few other comments have said, I thought that all the characters with bad endings in this story deserved it.
    • I enjoyed the mom-daughter interactions in this story. I don't think i've ever seen that dynamic in an Asian web novel before.
    • All the plot arcs in this story were engaging and addictive except for the very end.
    • This story is filled with schemes and political intrigue.
    • I liked the magic/fantasy elements of the setting. It was incorporated well and made sense for the story.
Cons

    • The male lead felt more like an accessory/plot device. His personality was not very compelling, even though his existence is necessary for the plot to advance. The story would work just as well if she just stayed friends with him.
    • The twist at the end about MC's identity felt a bit dragged out and detracted from the themes of the story. Spoilers below.
    • There's a bit too much of "omg MC so pretty" going on at times, but at least MC knew to use her beauty as a weapon/tool.
Spoiler

It turns out MC has direct ties to royalty through her biological father, who actually loves her but was exiled to another country so could not come back for his daughter/lover.

But that defeats the whole theme of a low-class prostitute's daughter rising to become respected, beloved, and feared by all who know her. The whole class struggle element of the story is a little bit tainted when it turns out she was royal all along. To be fair, it doesn't change the fact that she grew up in the streets and had to fight an uphill battle to be accepted in a elitist society. But I still wish the author didn't go that route of "she's actually a noble by blood!!!!"

It started off interesting but later on it became just too ridiculous.

This is basically a story of an adult bullying a child, because that child did her wrong.

So FL went back to the past, where she and her step sister is still children but even though FL is in a child's body - she has the mind of an adult - an adult who also knew what's gonna happen. So she was able to make plans on how to ruin the "young" step sister's plan. They made her look smart... more>> - but a smart woman still has to go through all that trouble to bring down a child.

So the entire time it felt like I was watching an adult bullying a child. The author was trying so hard to make the FL look smart and the child villain st*pid - so in order to make the step sister look stpd, they made her look like she was only capable of doing all those things because of the adults who manipulated her - so the villain was actually nothing but a victim of adults - which the "smart" FL only realized later on when she was already grown up (so her mind is now much older than when she died) - but of course we need to make sure the FL look smart and strong - so despite knowing all that, she went on to bully the child even more.

And the FL cannot make mistake as well, she is smart, strong, lucky and ohh can turn back the time each time she make a mistake. So it became boring, the FL cannot really grow from having new mistakes - everything went easy for her so she can bully a child

So, like I said the entire story seems like an adult bullying a child.

It would've been better if she returned to time where both of them were adults and that she can only reverse time once. It is also better if there was a worthy opponent.

She was also a bad person in the past, she even cut her maid's tongue. So Villain may be bad to her but she didn't harm those servants around her but because she must be bullied, then she wasn't even given a chance for redemption while FL was given a chance. It would've been better too, if step sister was given a chance for redemption- after all she was just groomed and a real victim.

It just went from interesting to ridiculous to boring. <<less

This is the novel that actually made me decide to join this site. Aria is my favorite type of villainess character. I read before joining so my progress is not shown. She came back with a goal and she stuck through it with out a single waivering moment like most rebirthed Mc's. Arias build up imo is beautiful. She doesn't start out perfect and undefeated. She has to really learn to control her temper (which caused her down fall in the first life). She takes a long time to learn... more>> about economics, buisness, proper noble etiquette, ect. Its nice see her activley work to fix her reputation in real time.

Mielle: God I wish she was as clever as they played her up to be.
Spoiler

I was really looking forward to some mental chess but all we got was a classist gullible little girl being used as a chess piece. Mielle was serving Nothing but pretty dresses and a nice hair cut most of this story and Im sorely disappointed.

[collapse]

Romance:
Spoiler

I liked the builed up between Asher and Aria but once they got together I got bored so of them. Its like they lost something for me but I cant quite put my finger on what it was.

Vengeance: The fall of the opposing party was so satisfying for me.
Spoiler

It was perfect watching the aristocratic party turn on eachother. Beautiful.

3.5/5 really isn't a bad story if u sit through it for some chapters.

Initially I was so frustrated at the MC that I didn't want to read it.. She involves unrelated people into her revenge (like seducing Oscar) whom she didn't even love, moreover takes delight in his internal turmoil just to piss off her evil sister. Takes other's feelings for joke, calls nice people 's*upid and 'easy to use', heavily pretentious (yeah she doesn't want her head to go rolling again but doesn't treat even nice people with sincerity),... more>> her gross seducing games to use men for her goals (even that creep Cain ew), already a rotten and annoying person since the last life, hypocrite, gets on high pedestal and looks down on lesser accomplished nobles despite being a prostitute's daughter herself, doesn't feel any remorse for the people she wronged etc etc

Then she slowly begins to realise and care for the people who truly help her and think about her happiness. Imo, it started getting better after Oscar cut ties with her. The plot is entertaining enough with nice enough romance and ample character growth. ML is so cute (^3^) <<less

Wow. I'm shookdt that this has really low ratings.

I like this novel. The MC is not a pure character and she grew up being insecure and was manipupated by the people around her to become horrible in her past life. When she went back, she knew the traps they set out for her so she made sure she will be avoiding them and strike a counter attack instead.

In most rebirth novels, the ML would be the one doing all the dirty work, schemes and all. But here, the FL takes... more>> charge of her own future. She is very harsh though.

Spoiler

She made Mielle and her brother suffer through so much. But I understand why she did it. She wanted revenge for her past life.

I know people pity Oscar for being manipulated and the MC is very mean for making him fall for her but he didn't have the spine to stand up to his sister. If he had chosen the MC, she would've fought for him to have independence at the very least.

[collapse]

The ML is actually the pure soul here. Lol.

If you want to read the story about a harsh MC who wants to get revenge, this is the story for you. The love story is also very sweet. So you can watch out for that. :) <<less

I haven't even read this story. I read 5 chapters of the manhwa, some spoilers, and the reviews, and I just wanted to make a comment.

I've had so much trouble getting into the villainess trope because they go in one of two ways:

The villainess wasn't a real villainess, she was just misunderstood/if it's isekai then the MC makes the "villainess" character good, and the heroine is the evil one.

The villainess was an actual villainess, but instead of getting redemption, we get revenge. Revenge itself isn't bad, I even like it,... more>> but I believe in a punishment that fits the crime. So if a person didn't do anything to you gets punished anyway for being close to your 'enemy' I am not okay with that.

From what I've seen, this woman essentially becomes her step-sister, she's not sympathetic at all, she is a flawed character. Which is supposed to be good writing, except I feel I'm going to see her as a villain in the end (not similar to anti-hero, that I can actually support but an actual villain.)

In this story, villains get what's coming to them. People who don't deserve it get bad/good ends. She went back to when her sister was a child, but because she was tortured, I'm supposed to feel sorry for her and think it's okay how she's basically lured a 13 year old kid into a bad end, including the step father who's resources she used, because he favored his own children. If she'd waited and the sister came after her then turned it on her, I would support it, but she went from a sympathetic villain, to an outright villain, and I am not fond of villains getting good ends.

Why can we not just get a story of a villain/villainess redemption? <<less

Well this is my first review so here goes

I have mixed feelings for this series. Basically I'm a huge advocate of a person who forgives but never forget type of thing, I think it's the most healthy and the most satisfying behavior to read at especially at a revenge series like this. This novel goes into the opposite, where the MC wants absolute revenge toward those who wrongs her, and her journey of how she got the revenge at the end. And yes it's quite satisfying to read at first.... more>> But at times goes on it became more and more dull. The whole conflict revolves around her "self pity" of how she suffers and how evil her sister is (her sister is a bit*h i"l admit that). And her journey of how she makes her sister suffer as much as she did. I believe that if she forgives her sister and goes on another direction while it's less drama it would be much more satisfying to read (if it's executed well) . I feel that is the truest revenge that she would have given to her b*tchy sister, is to live her life and be happy much happier than her. And I feel like the MC's main motivation while it's revenge her pranks towards her sister is quite petty to read.

I feel as if this novel goes towards the wrong direction. The premise is interesting but the execution of the plot is quite tedious. And frankly I question the author morals after reading this honestly. And on that note now that I think of it this is leaves a quite toxic message honestly.

3/5 stars I enjoyed reading it at first but as I said I expected more, much more than this "vent of an author" series. <<less

Honestly, the translation and editing for this is rather bad and makes it quite a tiring read. If I hadn’t of started the manga and already half invested in the story, I definitely would’ve dropped this earlier.

Aria can be so smart one moment and then absolutely st*pid the next. Where does her intelligence go? She figures things out and comes to a conclusion, but then the next time she ponders that same situation she is totally clueless and depressed, forgetting that in previous chapters that she’s already figured the solution out. This happens multiple times and with the same situations again and again, and it gets a little tiring to read.

She also is quite immature, especially for someone who is an adult. She gets really happy by the pettiest... more>> things, and when a small part of her plan goes wrong she gets immensely upset and sulky.

All the villains who have caused her so much pain lose their IQ after meeting Aria, which leaves the conclusion of the story to drag out needlessly.

I do however quite like the love interest. <<less

So... I have been putting off reading this novel for a while because of the negative reviews but I'm glad I gave it a try. (Spoilers ahead because of my opinions).

Don't get me wrong I get why many people complained that she petty, too OP and acts too much like a white lotus

But seriously if you were really in her place a had nearly 27 years worth of grudges and regrets, it wont just dissipate into thin air just because she has a second chance.

Before she died she was tortured... more>> and maybe not framed but was led into a pit by her sister Mielle. So yeah I found it petty that when she had the Hourglass she tormented her just to give back in time but honestly after the life she had its pretty normal to be twisted and she's using this as an outlet (her version of therapy?)

I wasnt also comfortable when Sofia got along with her sincerely but Aria only regarded her as chess pieces to invest in but again she just came back and she was mentally unstable. It took her time but near the end (70%) she started to cherish the people around her.

This slow development of her character is very humane.

The fact that she acted like white lotus... I think its smart. I mean you need to understand that this like the medieval time with nobles who all show a mask of elegance and benevolence. In reality Nobless obliges was surely a fairytale. Public image was to be crafted meticulously. The only ones that could be true to one's true self would those born of high rank with Absolute power with No fears (A tyrant king) or those too insignificant so no one cares who they are and how they behave (Sofia from the beginning of the novel). Since Aria was none of these and top had a scheming sister who acted like a saint, she could only fight poison with a stronger poison.

Don't get me wrong I did find the time needed for Aria to know the identity of the ML way too long but what can we do...

And the part where she saves Mielle at the first execution to torment her further... I honestly think it's not that wrong. I mean this was done more so that Aria could torment her to her heart content and make her pay all she could so that she wont be held back by resentment in the future. It's dark but its true that this was maybe needed for Aria to completely get out of the pasts shackles. Though personally I would have preferred Mielle to suffer a whole life I get that she needed to be beheaded just like Aria.

Wow such a long winded comment is a first for me. The story is a bit slow but it reflects the human defects honestly and think its worth a read. <<less
