Sixty Years ago, one middle aged man brought a Qilin that looked like a pug and a mandarin duck that looked exactly like a duck, walking into the Imperial City of the Central Plains for the first time.

That year, this middle aged man crossed the Mountains and Seas Ridge, passed through the Four Seasons Plain and walked into Qingluan Academy.

Sixty Years later, Lin Xi sat on an old carriage, starting from Deerwood Village, he passed half the Yun Qin Empire and went straight north, going to Qingluan Academy…

This is a story involving the honor of an Empire, of loyalty and betrayal, involving youth and hot blood, involving a young man with a different perspective of the world, and a strong cultivating academy.

Saw that it was being translated, went to read the raws. Finished everything in a week.

One of the best Chinese novel I have ever read. It's no wonder it won multiple awards and broke records on the Chinese site. I really hope it is translated well because honestly speaking even if it isn't, the plot of the story is enough to "carry" any poor translation.

Pros:

    • There are no repetition of events. Which means for the duration of the whole novel, there is no eat this pill >cultivate here>auction house etc. No cookie cut template. This is actually a well planned out and coherent novel. It flows and reads like an actual story, no wish fulfillment from the author. In fact this is one of the best Isekai Chinese novels I have read.
    • Every character actually has character. The author has somehow managed to make me feel things for minor characters that appeared less than 3 times in the novel. In fact, there are times the author used multiple chapters of the story to focus on the story of the side characters and develop plot. Every character in the story played a part in moving it along.
    • One of the few novels with a well thought out ending. It is not watered down, everyone will be satisfied. Of all the Chinese novels out there, this is the best.
    • Relationships between the MC and the female characters are perfectly executed. It's one of those rare instances where the author actually understands human to human interaction.
      Spoiler

      Not Harem

      [collapse]
But it actually shows why it is not that way.
    • For a cultivation and Isekai novel, this has logic. The author explains almost everything, which is why there are close to no plotholes.
Cons:

I'll be honest, I can't find any con for this story. The only thing I can really think of if we really want to go out of the way to find wrongs in the novel. Is that sometimes the change in perspective is confusing.

a majestic balloon with huge kingdoms, mysterious grand sects and wise characters on the outside - hot air inside.

after more than half of all chapters I saw:

Spoiler
  • a few dozen faceless first year students, only a few have names/identities
  • two, yes, two 3rd year students (and they're supposed to study for 10 years)
  • a few alumni in the world outside
  • about 10 teachers
  • only 4 teachers ever appeared outside and most of the time they're incompetent
  • this giant academy that supposedly protects their students outside, kinda doesn't really do that except only twice and that only for one student
  • I'm not gonna describe political intrigues in detail because they're middle-school level
[collapse]

lack of imagination or lack of skill? Probably both

First of all - the title is freaking clickbait. The real translation of the title is more like - the world of immortals and demons. Nothing about devil transformation. Cut a star for that.
There is filler description of everything. And this makes the pace a bit slow. The MC as some people would call, is "balanced". But, he isn't interesting enough (not on the smart side, nor funny, just a guy cultivating with some advantages). Certainly not an average novel about cultivate, fight, upgrade, find treasure, blah, blah and... more>> repeat. World building is good in terms of political aspect (MC's country/kingdom and opposing countries). Similarly character development seems good, due to just too much descriptions and the political aspect.
Seems much similar to Monarch of Evernight. Slow pacing and not OP MC.
FUN FACT - There is romance. But its just MC falling head over heels for a girl at the first sight. <<less

More : “Chronicles of Immortals and Demons”

And less “Immortal Devil Transformation”, so don’t let the title fool you like it did me. The current title kept me from reading. I ONLY started reading and caught up on the WUXIAWorld. com translation site when I saw it was very high positives there.

On Novel updates, I saw and didn’t think much of it. But I figured since my fellow wuxiaworld. com peeps gave it good thumbs up why not try reading a few chapters?... bad idea.

I binged ALL the chapters til the... more>> most recent ones.

Here are my reasons for why I binged:

  • It reads like a novel. No short action and no underdeveloped characters of any sort. All’s a stage and everyone had a good acting role in that stage.
  • The world was a GREAT stage. Well thought out rules of conduct, culture and customs. Familiar enough to go ‘hmm... nice people.’ Weird enough for ‘hm... uh. DEFINITELY not Kansas, but great to visit as a tourist.’
  • The theme and moral of story: “Tourist” attitude of the MC reminded me of the Death March MC, his attitude that this is different world, why NOT enjoy it? Why NOT try to live a good life? After all, this is the isekai life we’ve always wanted! Best part is, the MC is NOT an idiot. Not act clueless. Unlike some MC he actually get’s it. And even in the face of true human evil. He smiles. He lives. Because... he can and he should!!
  • The villains are multidimensional, sure there are the arrogant young masters, but as time goes by, you find that they are NOT as simple as you think. Everyone has a secret. Everyone has issues. Some are big, some are small.
  • It is a complex story woven by a very smart writer.
So if you like the more complex Wuxia world and a more complex, and yet simpler character, give this a read. Just remember, its more about the character and less about their journey!

Enjoy! <<less

This is like Harry Potter if Harry Potter was boring. God it's so slow. The central storyline is flimsy, the plot progression is almost non existent and the conflicts are laughable. It started off so well but volume 2 just grinds to a halt. I mean who the heck thought that 18 chapters about boring classes and no plot development was a good idea? I could have stomach it if the interaction between the characters was interesting but it's just not. The MC's rivals are douchebags, his friends are his... more>> friends and that's it. Nothing interesting, even the cultivation system is not explained in any details and we don't see MC making any major progress. It might get better later on but honestly I have no patient to wait that long and sit through all the slog. <<less

finally something new worth to read from WW.

so far its good, no fillers, no cultivating bullshits, no lots of fortune encounters, etc. Unlike most of chinese fantasy novels that love words count too much, this is a rare gem.

thx. 5/5 atm until proven otherwise.

I liked the pace, I liked the world-building. I really enjoyed it at first, besides a few issues with writing/translation. Sadly it then it devolved into a carricature of itself.

The earlier parts are a 3/5 while the latter parts are a 4/5 for me. This is Wuxia and not a Xianxia. As a result, the story is quite different from your usual Xianxia fare. Personally, I have mixed feelings about this novel. Having completed it, I feel the vol 1-9 have many flaws while vol 10-16 do make for a coherent plot and was enjoyable at times. I don't agree with the predominant theme of this novel, but this is a personal issue.

Thoughts:

    • At its core, one of the main themes of this novel lies in the predominant goodness of humanity, that people (both common and cultivator) will recognize the good deeds and sacrifices you do, and will stand with you at the cost of themselves in times of need. One of the main problems I had with this novel is that I did not agree with the way this theme was shown in this novel, given the setting was an Ancient China-esque society. I found the execution overly idealistic and this is a personal point of disagreement I have with the novel.
    • The main character Lin Xi, is a personification of this theme. He is someone that believes and breaths this theme, and uses it as a way to assemble the aid of many friends to overcome problems. I didn't find many flaws with the MC (although executing this theme makes him seem very naive and idealistic). However the way he doesn't care to explain himself results in a lot of poorly setup conflicts in Vol 1 to 9.
    • Before Vol 10, I found my main dislike being that the events were too small and insignificant in scale. I understand there needs to be time to build up the MC, but spending 3-4 vol on an insignificant officials argument is very annoying. I also disagreed with the teaching philosophy of Green Luan, found the golden spoon conflicts very petty, and felt the entire thunder mountain conflict was just chock full of plot holes.
    • After vol 10, it gets significantly better, with alot of stakes and more important events occuring. There's not much to say other than that there weren't many flaws in the execution, people were behaving as their character should, and events followed a rational progression. It was just a solid story with a solid ending.
Overall, I found the writing for the vol 1-9 to be very weak, while vol 10-16 make up a very solid story. I have mixed feelings on this novel, because while the writing is solid, I don't agree with the optimistic outlook of this novel and the way they portray the inherent good of humanity. However, in the end, I would consider this a good read nonetheless, especially the latter half of the story.

This novel is a fresh wind for those who have long since feasted through the best xianxia there are, and only see new novels which are repetitive.

-Set in a militaristic cultivation world, there are empires, politics, military and their interplays, rather than typical sects. Political intrigue is very interesting and complex in this novel. Politics is a main force behind motives and reasoning of people, rather than just 'face'. Cultivators and military are closely related.

-Characters are interesting. Okay so, the government is headed by an emperor, with detailed stratification for... more>> government officials (cultivators included). This is based on ancient China's structures, and so are the traditions and technology. This gives a strong base for the characters, where the motives and actions of the characters are believable, given the world they are living in.

-Translation is excellent.

-The world building is excellent and gradually revealed. <<less

Two stars for only two points of credit I can give this story. First, it doesn't suffer from tropes. Second, it's somewhat thought through. The bad is the author's deceit...

This story dresses itself as an adventure Xianxia with a MC that is intrigued by the prospects of becoming a Godlike cultivator, when actually this story is a boring political Wuxia in which even the strongest cultivators don't amount to something special even against mortals, let alone mortals from a modern world (despite what's being said along the story).

The biggest let... more>> down is the feeling of lifelessness the story projects, as though everything in it is tied together and led by the author's pull. Nothing will happen before it'd be convenient for the story, making schemes, fights, special powers, romances and breakthroughs bland.

My last issue is with the name of the story "Immortal Devil Transformation". I'm mid Vol 13, near the end, with the MC still far from amounting to something worthy of being titled an "Immortal". Actually, although such entities are mentioned in a passing when talking about the lost past of the world, when the story approaching its end nothing still had yet to happen and even if it would, it can only be rushed in order of having a substantial effect on the story. Similar case with the words "Devil" and "Transformation". Too far into the story with the title not making any sense, this proves the author's naming sense is lacking. <<less

I like how the plot is not just focused on action (martial arts or cultivation) but also in politics, intrigue, romance and all kind of "complementary" aspects that makes the characters quite robust, well developed. It is quite balanced. A bit of comedy, a bit of romance, quite a lot of politics or scheming, always with some action and adventures to make it all enjoyable with a good rythm. The plot is solid for now, it is sometimes too descriptive for a fast-pace lovers, but I think it is at... more>> a level that makes you understand the whole novel's society better. <<less

I'm not going to go too in-depth in my review as there have been plenty of people that have already said the majority of what I could say. This is just a well written and well thought out story. None of the cookie cutter plots or repetitiveness that you have in 99.9% of all Xianxia or Wuxia novels. It also appears to have actually been edited as plot points don't just mysteriously disappear, never to be mentioned again, as they do in most of the stuff posted online nowadays. It's... more>> an enjoyable read and the translation is spot on. <<less

There's a lot of good ratings and reviews of this novel so I will just condense the good stuff about this novel and elaborate the bad. This novel is great where there's no cliches of face slapping young masters wherever the MC goes, no tournament after tournament, no adventuring in X forbidden land to offend people and get loot, then adventure into another Y forbidden land to do the same thing over again. This is a novel that tries hard to make an epic story to rival Game of Thrones... more>> with lots of political intrigue with cultivators fighting. But because it tries so hard in being epic that it made this novel fall flat for me.

The author tries very hard in world building, so everyone's grandmother and their cousin and their nephews and their goldfish would get a backstory. The beginning is fine but as the story progresses, you get backstories of person X and what he/she is doing for 5 chapters and they are suddenly killed off. It's fine if they somehow tie back to the MC but it doesn't, so that pisses me off. To me, that's basically writing 5 chapters of filler just so the author can get more money and stretch the novel out. Another bad thing is the novel jumps around to different perspectives of the MC's enemies, his rivals, and their country. There's so much information and so many names that if you don't binge read it from beginning to the end, there's no way you're going to remember who is who. And when some characters do tie in with the MC, they are suddenly barely mentioned like they no longer matter because they've connected with the MC. The worst part that annoys me is a war that drags on on for god knows how many chapters because so much information is elaborated from every single perspective.

My advice is to read this when the novel is nearly done translating. And beware that this is one of the bottom feeders of wuxiaworld when it comes to editing. The beginning drove me nuts when sentences had 8 commas in them and became world record breaking run on sentences. <<less

It is an intricate tale with a lot of world-building... too much world building, actually. A slow, plodding story with frequent infodumps that crush the momentum of an already exceptionally slow start, with a vast array of characters (many of whom are unimportant) that all seem to need their own introduction. At some point all the arrogant people blur into one congealed mess of s*upidity to me, and many only really exist to annoy the MC. Reminds me of when I went on a tour for a school assignment and... more>> the guide would stop us every few meters to explain something. Only this is a story and all the names, places and events mentioned mean absolutely nothing and I'm not being tested on it, so I don't care. I do appreciate the effort, but the delivery is about as boring as it gets. Still better than the dime-a-dozen cliche fests, even if my eyes are glazing over as I wonder if I even need to bother remembering anything just in case it appears later. <<less

This might be my favorite.

The start of it is not particularly amazing, it gives you the impression that it will be your typical reincarnated cultivator with a special power ready to slap arrogant young master and split the heavens, but it then surprises you.

The good

    • The characters feel authentic, they love, they hate, they grief, they change.
    • There aren't many arrogant young masters, might feel like that early in the story when he is younger, but the real enemies have more depth then that.
    • The world building, while the world is small so far it has a lot of depth, the different empires feel different from each other, and even within the empire there are internal factions with individual motivation that don't always line up. There is also room to expand the universe, hints of unexplored land with possible powerful civilization and cultivators.
    • Cultivation is toned down, cultivators don't suddenly break thru one realm and start splitting mountains, even the most powerful cultivators (introduced so far) are human, they can be exhausted and killed if you throw enough regular soldiers at them.
    • MC has a pretty OP ability, but it has limitations, the MC does not always get the outcome he hopes for even after exerting all his effort.
    • The fights are depicted in great details (double edge sword, as it can get wordy at time)
The Bad:

    • The story can get wordy at times, the author gets lost in the details sometimes, not really an issue if you got chapters piled up to read, but when you are waiting for a new chapters to see how a particular thread will climax and a large portion of the chapter is spent painting a picture, and you don't get much closer to the climax, that can feel a bit frustrating.

Don't expect this to be a typical 'light' or 'web' novel. Expect world-building, story and pace to be at the level of depth of a published work.

Story gets better as it progresses. It is still quite enjoyable to read in the beginning unless you're extremely impatient, so give it a try.

Edit (completed) : Probably 4/5 overall, considering the slow start, petty reasons for villains attacking MC, last volume (ending was okay but the last volume enemy and plot was just bad).

Amazing novel. If you like Mao Ni novels (Ze tian ji, Joy of life, Nightfall) then you will certainly love this novel and another novel by this author called Sword Dynasty. If you're not familiar with these novels, they are written very well and similarly.

Back to this novel:

Pros:

    1. MC is done very well and actually progresses in mentally from the beginning.
      Spoiler

First he sees himself as a traveler from another world. After spending time here and meeting all the new people, he gets attaches and starts working hard to protect what he has here.

      [collapse]
    1. MC's cheat is handled well and he is not too OP and it is fun reading about other characters baffling at MC's choices
    1. World doesn't revolve around MC. There are other characters and they have their spotlight and grow as the novel progresses.
    1. No harem, the women actually have personalities and make their own choices.
Cons:

    1. Slow start and buildup. MC starts as a peasant pretty much and works his way up.
    1. Villain's are crappy, few are well created and have reasons for their actions, others are arrogant young masters.
Overall a well written novel with good characters, good plot progression and a fun story. I recommend it if you can stand the slow pace.
