Sakura was mu*dered by her family.

The place she was born in again was exactly the same place she read about in her favorite novel.

That is, Leycia, a kingdom that coexists with spirits.

The person she was born as was Claudia, a member of the Letsya duke family that commanded the kingdom’s army for generations; and also hated by everyone for the divine protection she received from the dark spirits’ king.

Because of that, Claudia was feared by her surroundings from a very young age and her family had a hard time bringing her up.

In the novel, Claudia was forced to marry into another kingdom in order to bind a peace treaty. But when Leycia opposed to the pact in the last moment, Claudia was taken as a hostage and mu*dered in the enemy kingdom.

Could Sakura who still hold memories of her past life avoid the sorrowful fate of Claudia?

Started off with potential. I was personally moved at first to find out that a JAPANESE author was writing a story about a girl of color striving to overcome racial scrutiny and decided to give it a read. Then, cruel reality hit me like Truck-kun hitting a shitty bland Isekai MC when I reached a certain chapter (9 or 10 I think, don't know, I was too angry to think straight after what I read) where the MC receives the "Blessing" of the Light spirit and her skin becomes... more>> lighter to the point that there's no longer any trace of her former self. Suddenly, everyone one that was avoiding her like a goddamn plague (including her worthless mother) became interested in her. Even going so far as stating lines like "You're now 20% more beautiful now" and other ignorant sh*t like that. The author of this novel is a f*cking as*hole who deserves to be &#^$%* in the @#% with a red hot poker.

Sooooooooooooooooooo, bottom line:

If you're a racist dickbag with little to no compassion for your fellow man, you'll enjoy this.

If you're not what was stated above and are actually a human being, don't waste you're time.

Kudos to the translator tho, he's doing a wonderful job.

(Update) Today, the Japanese Staff on Alphapolis (the ones responsible for making the manga/comic for this novel) have, as of Chapter 12, redone and edited her image to make her skin dark again after the initial release was met with backlash from JAPANESE readers! Just goes to show how out-of-touch the novel's author is with modern society and morality. <<less

Most of the characters are too dumb to live. I also don't get how a fairy tale from before recorded history (no proof it ever happened) would make a mother hate and fear her own daughter from birth. At least not to that extreme.

There's not much fluff; the author seems to prefer focusing on how hated and feared the protagonist is to the point of making almost everyone act like they have IQs below 50.

I'm not sure what the author's trying to accomplish here but I predict (not having read... more>> past chapter 6) that it will continue with 2/3 people hating or fearing her for no reason and acting like dumb jerks, and 1/3 people coming to her defense, mostly by pointing out she's a duke's daughter. And then at the last chapter people will suddenly realize that she's actually a human being, not a monster, and she'll live happily ever after with the male lead and will never suffer discrimination again.

At least if the discrimination had some variation, or if ANYONE was smarter about it. There are plenty of ways to bully someone without directly attacking them in public. There are also plenty of ways to discriminate without telling her to her face they hate her.

2 stars because the translation's good and the basic premise is decent, if poorly executed. <<less

I'm so frustrated at how this novel is turning out to be. I loved the premise of having a dark-skinned MC and her changing her destiny and overcoming society's prejudice. For a while, everything's been good: she made wonderful friends, gained some support from the people around her, and ... more>>
Spoiler

even sent that b*tchy heroine to the hell she came from.

[collapse]

But everything changed when the fire nation attacked. But everything went downhill after the war like SERIOUSLY
Spoiler

when the Light Spirit King changed her skin color, I had to scream. WAS THAT REALLY NECESSARY??? WTF CHANGE IT BACK!!! And what's worse is when people began treating her differently just because her skin color changed. Her mother, who couldn't care less about her and even accused her of harming his son, suddenly wants to make amends? And everyone suddenly wants to be her friend? There was even someone who praised her dark hair and eyes. Omfg just say you're racist and go.

[collapse]

What I'm saying is, it would've been a lot better if the story stuck to its original premise. It would've been A LOT MORE SATISFYING if the MC proved people wrong by staying just the way she is. With the way things are now, I understand why she herself is feeling hurt, angry and disgusted at how everything turned out. Damn, if she chooses to destroy the world now I would even cheer for her. Those people are nasty.

With that said, I'm still continuing this because of Gerald and Levy.
Spoiler

Also to find out what that little sh*t Ronald is up to.

Its a novel about a girl who try to be above discrimination and the usual avoiding bad route. The story premise is interesting, but there's still no fluff yet typical of otome reincarnation genre. The translation is good, so don't hesitate to read it.

They didn't have to "fixe" her skin colour. Claudia worked hard in order not to be hated by people and she had succed in it so why the need to do that!! Plus how is the blessing of the Light Spirit Queen able to turn Claudia's skin "back to normal" when she has the protection of the Dark Spirit King which should be more powerful?!

Actually this LN is quite short (16 chapters), and 9 out of 16 chapters are about MC is hated/feared by other people or her parents. With only 7 remaining chapters, I think you all know what will happen after this, fast and confused.

Spoiler

After chapter 9 the story turn into awkward... Sadly victory from war not effect much for MC except knights' opinion. At celebration party, the original protagonist try to insult MC lead to the knights and mc's friends go aganist her. So the original protagonist order the light spirit king to kill everyone, but turn out, the light spirit king abandon the protagonist and blessing MC instead, and that make mc's skintone turn to white... After that everyone's opinion about MC are all changed!!! It's kinda like other people's opinion around MC are just base on skin color more than her merit, even her mother (at least, it's a comfort to know that MC is not forgiving type). After that MC turn into popular woman, so ML confess to her and they start dating (everything until now happen in just 2-3 chapters). And remaining chapters (time skip) are about finding a spy that try to assassinate MC, and small ending at the end of last chapter...

[collapse]

I think this LN is quite good if you just read it for fun, but if you getting serious it will turn into a mess. Don't expect realistic plot, don't expect that MC will turn to dark side and then burn baby burn (lol, cuase I am and end up disappointing). <<less

While I wanted to rate this short story a 4 in the beginning, the story sadly just keeps degrading as the plot continues. First off, the translations are great and the story was alright as a short story at the start. The parent's are perfectly written as tr*sh, I personally wanted to climb into this story and brawl the mother. And later on:

Spoiler

Claudia turns pale instead of the dark skin she was born with from the blessing and everyone is much more accepting of her. Her reaction? Literally "What a pain. I don't want people doing a 180 degree turn and swarm to me." Complete with telling her mother and father to (mildly) eat sh*t once they try to cozy up to her. However I do wish she treated them even worse, I hated them so much...

[collapse]

that said, why not 4 stars? Well, the plots cliche and the antagonist, Amelia is absolutely idiotic. She literally runs around, calling people "a mob character", saying it's a story, that "I'm a saint", etc. who in the world older than 7 goes around blabbing and basically saying "I can see the future"?! She's paper thin and basically built to just make Claudia look good.

The story also glosses over the MC's whitewash moment which I didn't mind originally because I expected an extreme furious MC to lash out at how now that her skin lightened she was accepted without a hitch. Unfortunately, there was only a minor lackluster complaint and then focused on her romance. Since it was a short story, I do understand that plots have to move at the speed of light, but unfortunately the beginning took too much and rendered the second half to be pretty rushed and lacking. <<less

The premise is just so seriously racist that the whole story leaves a bad after taste. Dark skin/dark hair means evil and ugly?

Spoiler

And later on she gets "blessed" and gets a lighter skin color and suddenly all is A-ok? I know asian countries have insane beauty standards, but that is so blatantly racist I don't even know anymore.

[collapse]

I like her individually, though as typical for the genre, she is utterly dumb when it comes to social clues, though in this case, it does fit the story. With her family background it's actually normal for a child to grow up with internalised issues. Le sigh

Somewhat interesting and not the worst villainess novel IF you can swallow the blatant racism issue with the skin color. I tried, but in the end it overshadowed all my enjoyment, because it's not just an underlying issue, it's mentioned every other paragraph, just in case you forgot how ugly the dark skin is supposed to be. F*** this, I regret finding this, partially because it isn't the worst and you so desperately want to be able to just have fun with it, but in the end I couldn't. I just angered myself half to death. <<less

The characters are mind-bogging s*upid. Even giving it 1-star feels insulting to other 1-star novels. In a short period of time, the author slaps you in the face with lots of characters which eventually make it difficult to remember all of them (most of them are hardly relevant anyway). It's really ridiculous how the supporting characters and the antagonist act. I was left thinking "these people are too s*upid to function in everyday life how are they not dead yet?"

Spoiler

Her mother literally became catatonic after giving birth to the MC because GASP she has the dark spirit king's blessing and also her skin color is dark and that shocked her half dead. Really, how come the wind blessed people don't have green skin since the author wants to go by this light/dark skin logic? Also the reason the people fear the blessed of the dark spirit king is because of their history, where there used to be a hero blessed by the dark who selflessly helped build their kingdom eventually turned against them after being treated horribly by the people around him out of fear. Despite knowing this piece of history the people refuse to learn anything and continue to publicly ostracise the dark king's people. Logic is clearly in short supply within this kingdom. They keep talking how frightening the dark blessed are and yet they keep bullying these people. Imagine crying that you're deathly scared of wasps while you're humping its nest.

[collapse]

Maybe this novel is secretly satire and the author is sitting somewhere in Japan snickering to themselves. Anyway there's not a lot of chapters translated so if you have some extra time and you're feeling down because you think your writing is sh*tty then read this. You'll realise maybe you're not so bad at writing after all. <<less

This story is SO good, would definitely recommend. 5/5

My only gripe is that that the 'next chapter' and 'previous chapter' buttons aren't really made well, so it might be better to keep the NU page open.

There's a lot that can be said about this novel, and I do mean A LOT. I also find it really offensive how the lord of light or whatever it was turned her "black" skin light. If we're going base off of the cover art you can see her skin isn't black but indeed tanish. The fact that people are trying to treat her better because her skin is no longer "black" irritates me. Because as a black person I can just wake up and have my skin magically become lighter! Even if it's fiction it's still offensive <<less

Quite interesting premise and also quite refreshing from other Isekai action genre, I feel like that since I'm not overly familiar with otome game/genre in general

The story is about MC who reincarnated into a game world which she played before, she know her demise and overall story, and try to avoid it at all cost.

This one did a fine job of manipulation. 5 Stars and well deserved The only failings I can point it out, are the following. It's too short even though it does manage to fit quite a bit in a small package there's more that would have been really nice to have. It's a little on the simplistic side but who wants Finnegans Wake the web novel ? The characters are a little too good. But man they were good. It was truly nice to see a main character with a... more>> purpose and a goal who didn't continuously get in her own way and do everything imaginable to stop themselves from achieving it.

The war scene was a disappointment and I had hoped that she kept her dark skin since it was what made me read it in the first place.

Also, the s*upidity of the heroine 'nuff said.

[collapse]

Honestly, it became boring too boring to read and the only thing that kept me going was the presence of the Dark Spirit King. (He's hot~) And though the MC is likeable, there's not much else to expect.

This was too shallow for me. If the author would have got in depth of the MC being tragically misunderstood and had more details about the side characters and what not, then it would have been a great read.

If this continues I would still read it--it seems that there is a plot coming soon based on the side characters, but here's to hoping that it will be more serious than this light fluffy thing it's airing now. <<less

Other reviews are really overhyping this novel waaaaay too much ! Like Yeah the start was good and all but after some chapters it becomes unbearable to read the MC doesn't have any backbone to defend herself even tho apparently she has the All-So-Powerful Dark spirit king with her that can destroy the world also the backstory and the reason why people avoid and fear her is utter bs even for medieval times.

2 stars in appreciation for the translation's efforts.

The novel starts well and interesting but it soon shows its failings. The MC is likeable, she has suffered in her previous life for lack of parental love and even in her new life she inspires fear and hate from everyone because she is protected by the Dark Spirit. (Let's just ignore how much people hate her just because she exists). In spite of everything she tries to live ignoring other people's rude comments and at the same time establishing friendly relationships with... more>> people who could help her overcome her bad ending. So far, so good.

Then, you realize how everything and everyone, apart from the MC, is childish and sometimes illogical. Her "enemy" acts like a 5-old child, she speaks without thinking and even her thinking is so over the lines that it hurts to read. For example:

Spoiler

She is called Amelia, is protected by the the Light spirit and is also a reincarnated person, the first time she meets a girl who in the novel is her friend, she says to her: "Why are you defending Claudia, you are my best friend!". Obviously the supposed friend is like "She is crazy" but Amelia is completely oblivious to her surroundings. In more than one occasion, she literally screams out of nowhere how Claudia is a bad person, everyone should hate her while she is a saint that everyone should love.

[collapse]

I don't understand why the author chose to have this s*upid character as a rival, but I guess it probably would have cost too much effort. Another problem is the shortness of the novel, things are rushed over and oversimplified: the war mentioned in the description is so important that gets resolved in half chapter.

To conclude, read if you are 10 years old or are extremely bored <<less

I enjoyed the story right up till they completely invalidated the entire premise of it. To be fair though, I don't totally blame the author, I also blame his editor and publishers who no doubt pushed for this change in plot, or if they didn't, they didn't say anything about it until they got serious backlash from their readers and then they quickly retconned it. Not that it saved the story in the end. Too little too late really.

Whatever the case, seeing how the novel was then wrapped up in... more>> seven-ish more chapters and dropped faster than hot lead, it isn't shocking to note that the 'ending' feels more like the aftermath of a train wreck.

So to wrap up: Good story premise (Which earned it a 2.5/5) but sadly destroyed by real life @ssholes. <<less

E.g. MC being ostracized all her life by people WOULD suffer a mental breakdown when they suddenly do a 180. This is why she felt more hurt that her father and the rest of the world started 'treating her kindly' as opposed to the mother who straight up admits starting over is impossible and tries to "meet her halfway".

[collapse]
Its also why I feel whitewashing skin tone is 'necessary'

Now let us discuss the thing I feel are 'undeserved'. The claims of racism with 95% complaints mostly directed to "whitewashing the chocolate milk skin". To discuss this, we go back to the beginning.

"MC gets blessed by a Dark Spirit which results in dark skin and dark hair, then ostracized."
Why dark skin? The obvious "racism plot point" aside. Dark skin is easily seen. You CANNOT hide your skin color but you can still bleach and dye your hair. This means the MC has no options but to accept being ostracized. (before anyone says hair dyes don't exist, their clothes have color, so dyes SHOULD exist)

Why whitewash her skin later? Again, the skin cannot be hidden. It proves to the world that she is blessed by the light spirit with no arguments like hair dyes.

The 20% more beautiful comment? Somewhat distasteful but not surprising. They live in some magical medieval Europe where dark skin do NOT exist. I repeat, MEDIEVAL EUROPE. You know... the era people do bloodletting for brighter skin?

Now let us talk about the bad points. Remember when I said the whitewashing is necessary? It is also BAD. How? The story is not over yet but the novel already lost the one thing that made this story unique. It would be great if the story had pretty much ended then and there (after "solving" the 180 problem via the absolutely cheesy power of the romance tag) but then there is another arc or something. <<less

When I first glanced through the reviews on here to see the general reception, I saw a lot of one and two stars. I went against my better judgement and kept myself from reading the reviews and jumped straight in. This was a mistake.

This story starts off strong, where the MC chooses not to actively pursue strength gain and made efforts in creating bonds, well bonds limited to school classmates and the family butler, anyways. She actively avoided a few characters because of the discrimination the MC had been put... more>> through. While not pursuing strength was a good decision on the MC's part as the narrative would've framed her as dangerous; I really can't stomach how the rest of the story was played out after the war.

The author tried to (keyword- tried) shed light the ongoing discriminatory tactics practiced against races and how perception of others rapidly change when the subject of discrimination appears to be the same as them.

The MC in this story has a drastic change in physical appearance during the banquet post-war and people's nature flips like a chameleon changing colours. What was once "ugly" became an object of adoration. What was once "abhorrent" was now beautiful.

The author fails to handle the ending of the story, it is awful how things suddenly start turning for the better and how much goodwill she is showered with. But where the author does succeed is in capturing the fickle mindedness of people.

Is it worth the read? Yes, it is. Because this will give you a new benchmark for scrutinizing bad novels. The one and two star reviews you see here, along with mine are people who had once held high hopes for the story. Only for it to spectacularly crash and burn. <<less
