My Underachieving Seatmate Doesn’t Need Any Comforting

Qiao Shao, who worked hard to stay up all night and study, was first in class — if you count from the bottom.

He Shen, who was able to get a perfect score even when he slept all day, in a rare display of kindness, bought a bottle of drink to comfort his s*upid seatmate.

Then he saw the messages popping up on Qiao Shao’s phone—

Dad: Don’t panic, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Dad just ordered a new sports car for you.

Granddad: Grandson, there’s no need to hurry. It’s alright even if you didn’t do well in your exam. Granddad bought a new yacht for you, come and take a break.

Grandpa: Grandson, don’t cry, it’s okay if you didn’t do well in the exam. Grandpa’s billions-worth of properties are all yours.

With a blank expression, He Shen threw his 2.5 Yuan worth bottle of drink into the tr*sh.

Hold your horses! Comfort?

It’s been a long time since I read something so good (even without the sexy parts!). It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it wasn’t angsty even though bad things happened to the MC because he was on the road of getting better.

It’s a story of new beginnings and finding love and friendship and strength to fight the demons of your past with the help of your love ones.

Thanking the translator for picking it up and sticking it to the end!

Like some have said, the summary does not justice for this novel. It's so sweet literally and figuratively... hehe you'll know why when you read it. I love the fluff and that there isn't crazy angsty misunderstandings. I was reading this and though it was a bit slow in the beginning with the development of the relationship (it is a slow burn romance), however it only get better and better as their relationship develops. I like the fact that we can also see both MC and ML's point of view.... more>> The interactions between the MC and his friends are funny as well from misinterpretations of different situations (though sometimes I feel bad for the amount of dog food they have to eat XD). Sorry this is so vague. I rather not spoil the novel too much and hope you read it! I can't wait to see when the truth between their identities are revealed and the unravel of their tragic backgrounds. Definitely and highly recommend this. It also updates pretty much a chapter a day!

Most of all thank you Chrysanthemum Garden and their translators for always putting out quality translations. <<less

Super adorable and heartwarming. I am simply a sucker for a cute coming-of-age school romance story.

The tone is lighthearted and the characters are painted in a slightly caricature-ish manner for comedy relief, but on the whole, the characters all feel very relatable and real. Aside from the utterly lovable interactions between the MC and ML, the story touches on deeper issues and really highlights the various struggles and insecurities of teenagers (eg, appearances, family background, academic grades, etc.)

The author is really good at delivering nuanced emotions that packs a punch when you least expect it. I especially love how the author portrayed Lu Xiao's character (ML's friend). Even though he is super myopic, he 'sees' things the best. He isn't given much screen time for now, but every time he says or does something, it makes me laugh.
Spoiler

When MC asked why doesn't LuXiao wears prescription glasses, ML replied that LX has nothing he truly wishes to see in great detail.

Meanwhile while waiting for new chapter updates, I shall check out other works by this author.

To the translator: Even though Chinese isn't your first language, you're doing a great job! Though you made me laugh when you translated 加油 as 'refuel'!! Haha. The translation for this phrase is usually a tongue in cheek, 'Add Oil.'

This novel is really warm and lighthearted, and will put you in a good mood. There are no major villains; the story is more focused on personal growth. You can’t help but cheer the leads on.

Started reading this about an hour ago, currently on chapter 10. The plot seems interesting. So far I'm only giving it a 3/half rating because I don't like how many paragraphs it takes to perform 1 scene. Like when the MC was doing something normal like walking into the teacher's office to get some school uniform, it took 8 paragraphs just for that to happen. Maybe I'm being weird but I just personally don't like dragged-out scenes, (Most of the scenes were dragged out.) Another thing I kinda disliked... more>> was how the MC was described as a middle schooler. Ik ppl can look weak, and be skinny/short, which ppl often mistake for a "middle schooler" but it just felt kinda weird thinking the fact MC was described to look like a literal 12-year-old and being shipped with a 16-17 yr old. I'm thinking about dropping it for now and starting another novel. I'll probably come back to this but for now, I wanna read someones writing that suits my tastes. Cute read so far though. <<less

It was kinda... meh?

I mean, I like fluffy and cute stories, but this one, I just didn't like it.

First of all, it starts with the MC being so tiny and small, so that everyone is like "oh ok let's protect him" he's an high schooler not an elementary boy.

... more>> And why is everyone obsessed with calling their partner wife? If it's just one or twice is ok, but when it's portrayed for too long it's just frustrating, this is a mlm story, he's not your "wife".

Also, I felt like there was no chemistry between them, when I read all of those cheesy lines I was embarrassed in a bad way.

So in a nutshell, it's discrete. <<less

I avoided this because of the reviews, but ended up finding it when I was going through the translator's backlog. I decided to give it a go, and I honestly don't understand why people dislike it. It's very sweet and fluffy--it's a school romance through and through so don't go into this expecting anything steamy. It's just sweet!

Basically don't hate iron for not becoming steel......

As someone with PTSD, I can honestly say that it's a pretty accurate portrayal. And actually I have test anxiety linked to mine as well.

Now I... more>> know I gave it 5 stars but there are negatives here. The pacing could use work. In the beginning there are several inconsistencies, and in the end there are a few plot threads left hanging (exactly what did He Shen do to the Xie family? Did Daddy Qiao help him?), but I don't feel that ruined anything. I'd give this a 4.6 rating for that reason. But I'm rounding up. :D <<less

A beautiful novel about healing. About the power of healthy relationships that motivate you to improve yourself and support others. Honestly one of my favorite MLs ever, and I loved the MC's family. The trauma explored in the story was not the type I initially expected but I'm actually glad it's not what I thought it was going to be. The darker parts of the story still made me cry at times. At the same time, some of the misunderstandings made me laugh.

Regarding mental health in the novel (not spoilers... more>> but just clarification/a rant) :

Spoiler

Yes, trauma & PTSD aren't solved that easily in real life, but I don't think that discrepancy detracts from the value and comfort of this story. It did not feel like the topics of mental health were treated disrespectfully. Rather it was the issue of trauma recovery being treated like a linear process. It's not, but that wouldn't have fit for the plot and length of this novel. Love and companionship are treated as powerful motivators and healing elements but it didn't feel cheap. It was more, the support of people that care about you and finding the power to confront your past because you want to get better. I hope that reassures anyone reluctant to read this b/c of how the author might treat these things too cheaply.

First, I'm going to say based on the summary alone, it was TOTALLY DIFFERENT from what I Expected! But in VERY VERY "GOOD GREAT AWESOME THANK GOD!" WAY!!!

It was So CUTE and Full of Fluff!!! Full of Epic Funny Misunderstanding!

All the Supportive Side Characters are all GREAT!!!

... more>> The MC and ML is So Lovable and Precious and I Love them Sooooooooo Fcking Much!!!

There's even very few and short face slapping moments, but it was soooo Satisfying!!!

The Drama didn't feel so Heavy because it was Equal with the Fluff in very Good way! Everything Delivers Perfectly!

To me, this Novel is Absolutely Perfect! The Characters, Plots, Ending... Satisfying from the start till the end!!!

I Love this Novel with my Eternal Love for the Eternity and Beyond! <<less

It starts off very slowly and with many misunderstandings. At first I was a bit reluctant and almost dropped the novel because of that, but my goodness, was I wrong. The little misunderstandings got cleared up soon and the story got only better and better. I am honestly very much in love with He Shen and Qiao Shao, it's definitely one of my favorite BL books I've ever read.

So please, if u want fluff, amazing comedy (sometimes very much absurd), even more fluff and a heartwarming relationship, this is the... more>> stuff. Be ready for some pretty dark past of the main characters, I couldn't stop my tears. I can't even-- this book is really so wonderful <3 I fell in love and I'm grateful! <<less

Rating: 4/5- A beautifully warm albeit painful story with trauma and healing at the focus.

I really enjoyed this story. At first I was concerned I would drop it because it had a lot of misunderstandings between the leads and I usually get annoyed when misunderstandings take precedence. However after a few chapters in the more annoying misunderstandings were cleared up and the more major, understandable misunderstandings were left to form a relatively solid plot.

What was novel about this story was the trauma backstory. I won’t say it was incredibly realistic... more>> because I felt there were a few unrealistic reasonings in the recovery and behaviour of said PTSD sufferer, but it’s a web novel and in the context of that I think it was well portrayed.

The relationship is cute and I love the romanticism of how healing it was for both leads (but my honest opinion is that this would be a bit different in reality and not so easy. But again, this is a work of fiction so I’m not complaining)

I think for the length the author got her message across quite nicely even if there were a few plot holes and such. I think it was a wonderful read overall and I’d recommend it. It’s one of the better highschool romances out there. <<less

✧\ (>o<) ノ✧ Another top tier story!!! Even tho everyone has said everything what is great about this but I STILL need to say what really captured me:

  • The MC's family, to be more specific; his father
  • The friends of the couple
  • Their destiny/fate that paved the way for them to be together (there are a lot of stories that makes this as natural as possible but this is in the top 5 for me)

Also, special shout out goes to the misunderstandings, I actually didn't get fed up of it; they were as frustrating as they were hilarious and entertaining. <<less

Hands down one of my favorites. The storyline is phenomenal, and MC and ML's backstories are both very well written, the angst made me cry uncontrollably (although I am sensitive). The flow was steady and nothing was fast-paced. The misunderstandings are unbearably cute and funny, and the side characters weren't forgettable like some in other novels. It starts off fluffy and gets more mature as you read further, and the MC and ML are each other's power. They relied on each other to overcome their psychological problems (physical too haha),... more>> which was heartwarming. The relationships the all characters had with each other were comical--I love how MC is with his dad and family, calling them by first names. I wanted more even after I finished the extras. Don't let the low ratings discourage you from reading! <<less

Ah~ This is really cute! I really like the character development and heartwarming moments!

The angsty moments are treated seriously, so I appreciate that. The secret identity/identity reveal was tantalizing!

The side characters have personality even though they aren't focused on much.

My lame review can't capture how awesome this story is. It has its cliches, but somehow the story they create is really good?

The MC's family is too good for this world.

EDIT: Ah, I see. It's Game Loading's author! No wonder this is good.

Based on the comments, I decided to read that the main character has a psychological problem. But I was disappointed. I finished the story for the side characters. The side characters are very sweet and funny. One of the comments was that MC wrote about autism. The MC character was terrible for me because I kept my expectations high. A good story for a straight reading appeals to people with lower average age.

the author does not know anything about psychology.

-- spoiler--

I would like to point out that MC is not... more>> autistic. The story states that there was trauma due to abduction. An attempt was made to contact the main event, but the links were broken. MC's memory loss and behavior is not correct. The character MC emerges as a spoiled, liar and selfish personality, as the author cannot connect. In addition, MC's intelligence level is 10 years old. So I couldn't find MC cute. He lies to his family to go to school. He's lying to his friends. While he thought the food costs were expensive for a student, he did not complain about ML paying for him. Used foot hurt for a long time. He did not make a gesture to ML's help. When a friend helps you, you make a nice gesture, but he always waited for the gestures. Towards the end of the story he decided to order food. I don't know what the author really wrote to such a low personality. Even from the beginning to the end, without any feelings between them, MC knew how to use ML. MC's view of ML and other friends was terrible. A stealing incident was also given in the story to support MC's heroic halo. The struggle of a psychologically abducted kidnapped teenager against the hooligans is great. Is this normal? Is it realistic? Is the author taunting the reader? Why readers do not pay attention to these details. Criticizing makes the story beautiful. Do not blindly note. Let's not mislead people.
The author of the ML character was perfect in everything. However, a genius emerged as a Babysitter of her psychology. The author ruined the ML character because of MC. Geniuses may be a little pe*verted, perhaps the author wanted to draw attention by making such a choice. The ML character was actually a marketer, and then he could write a big code. I couldn't understand this part. I don't think it's too hard to introduce MC. In short, the characters are not alive. A low profile story written to get high scores. I think the side characters are more seated than the main characters. It is better to interact with blue hair school bullying.

This story should be reviewed <<less

If you like a light and fluffy read, this novel is for you. There are some angst that could make you cry, but it wasn't that heavy. I could say light-moderate angst (if you want a heavy one try the Seeing Eye Dog). My pros for this novel is that it's pretty fluffy and the CP are devoted to each other, and one of my cons is that from start to finish of main ending, it only covers 7 months of relationship (there was a translator note that author changes... more>> the date so MC actually transfer in mid-month of May btw). Reading it looks like you read a novel plot that spanned for years, but the setting was only for a few months, which kind of make it a bit unrealistic for the romance progression and being "we'll only be for each other till we get old". But still read it if you just want some fluffy read.

I also recommend to not read some other reviews or the spoilers. It made me quite conscious of when things should happen. I could really feel the meaning of the chinese idiom, "The emperor doesn't worry but his eunuch does." Lol

I still want to give some comments though about what happened in the novel, so read at your own risk:

Spoiler

There were only that monthly test in May/June, then that final term test in June/July, that MC got last place. I was thinking of the other reviewer's comment saying all of the tests, which made me unconsciously thought that MC failed a lot more or something. His psychological condition was pretty reasonable too, and I really want to point out that reviewer who says that MC was thinking about his mother every time he took the test that's why he always failed, but it wasn't. It was silence from the traumatic experience that can make him have his PTSD episodes aside from the term mother.

ML's character after his grandfather's bday was pretty weird. I almost felt like the subdued/obedient ML was so out-of-character. It made me so uncomfortable till the main ending. It was understandable though because they live on the same house with MC, but I wished the author gave more scenes of ML'S wolfish character when they were back to school or maybe when they were alone together. I really missed that in the later episodes.

There was also that chapter after the final term test, when they finally confessed to each other. ML said I loved you for so long, but it was only for 2 months, hahaha. If only there're a way in real life that you can have a stick-to-one boyfriend that you had only met for a few months and wants to pamper you and get married inmmediately.

Cute, short, and sweet. If you're looking for some fluff, you've come to the right place. This novel isn't overly complicated and there's not much drama. It's just the process of two teenagers falling in love. However, it does seem as if the author changed the trajectory of the novel midway through. Either way, still a good novel if you're looking for something to raise your spirits.

At first it seemed like they were setting on ML to be some miserly kid who was barely scraping by, pinching pennies to buy some medication and food, but all of the sudden he changed into the runaway heir of some big conglomerate?

I like the translated chapters by CG so I braced myself and MTLed the rest. It's surprisingly easy to understand (that or I'm getting used to MTL, lol). I will still read the incoming translated chapters, I probably missed a lot of details I'm not even aware of.

The summary, as most summaries here especially in BL genre, doesn't do the story's justice. The backstories of the MC and ML is a bit more angsty than Fake Slackers but the overall feel is almost the same? Lighthearted and really fluffy most... more>> of the time. Like, in Fake Slackers the main characters are faking their actual intelligence while in this stlry, the main characters are hiding their social status and wealth.

The misunderstandings in this story are actually not exaggerated, lol, like if you're in those situations the conclusions you will also draw are same more or less so they're more hilarious and not frustrating unlike some stories with that plot.

The way the romance progressed is also so satisfying, like we don't have wishy washy characters here, I love MC and ML, okay. <<less
