The seventh prince, Arnold Lakes Adler. The young man who was inferior to his younger twin brother in every way, the dull prince.

Incompetent and lethargic, Arnold wastes everyday just playing around. However, behind the scenes, he is one of the only five SS-Class adventurers called ‘Silver’.

Seeing the intensifying battle for the throne he decided “I don’t want to die so let’s have my little brother become the emperor…”

This is the tale of absurd secret manoeuvres of the prince who is uninterested in the title of the emperor.

I gave this series a second chance, part of me wanted to like it but I really can't bring myself to.

As it's been pointed out by other reviews with similar ratings, this series isn't very good. Honestly speaking, it takes a person that actively seeks/enjoys physical and mental pleasure from masochistic play, verbal abuse and possibly self-cucking themselves to actually find this piece of literature remotely interesting. Just because the initial premise in the first few chapters was relatively unique, doesn't automatically means the series or any other series... more>> good.

The only noticeably good thing about this series is the surface level of political strife between the direct descendants of a kingdom's emperor, fighting for the throne, that you'd see in monarchic settings and that's pretty much the end of my positive comments.

Story doesn't show any promise because it seems that the author is the type that repeats the same cliché situations and writes new scenarios in the spur of the moment without any prior planning or any planning at all. Personally, I'd usually test series like these to see if there are any progress that happens in the future so I can look forward to/keep reading by skipping a chunk of chapters without knowing the context and to my surprise, nothing.

Our main character, Arnold, really takes the cake for being one of the mediocrally written MCs I've seen in a long while. Hiding under the facade of an incompetent prince just to boost his brother's reputation and his chances of being the next prime candidate of succeeding the throne.

While in reality, he's actually overpowered, smart, brave, a people's person that's respected by those around him when they find out his true nature. I can understand his qualms about not wanting to become the next successor of the throne because it's simply troublesome but his reasonings behind it is the problem. "I don't want to do it so I'm gonna force my younger brother to do it for me because it's bothersome and attracts too much attention" is his attitude and mentality towards the situation. Why drag your so-called loved ones into the political fray like this when you can just deal with the situation yourself since you're the most suitable person for the job instead of acting like the puppet master in the shadows.

Not only that, Arnold systematically drags and lowers himself down in the eyes of people just for the sake of bettering Leonard's image which is possibly one of the moronic ways of thinking I've seen. He doesn't even give a second-thought about those who cares about him and just does things as he wishes because he can.

I could go on with review but this much will suffice.

Subjectively and objectively speaking, I definitely will not recommend this series to anyone or to people that enjoy reading tr*sh like this because I do not want them to go through the same hell I did. 1/10 <<less

My biggest gripe is that there are too many characters to remember and care about. I can remember like 13 of them but no more. The worse part about that is that even more new characters keep getting introduced so I just gave up trying to remember everyone.

Currently, my concern is that the author might not know where to go after the current rebellion arc. It’s been stretched out for quite a long while now and I feel that the S rank adventurers subplot did nothing but waste time. I’m... more>> hoping that it’ll end soon and move on to focus more on the pre-established characters, specifically the main characters. <<less

A good work has many complaints about the people close to it, even without evidence, they do not have suspicion in relation to the MC, however I think these same people do not understand the fact that no matter how many chapters the time that passed in the universe of the work was short and as strange as some actions of the MC are there is no evidence some moreover she has always demonstrated that this huge amount of events in a short period of time is strange and has... more>> the hand of someone and that even being as strong as is the case with the MC be discovered ahead of time he will have a series of disadvantages and it has already been stated in the work that he always moves when he has full conviction of victory or has no more options making his personality and objective expand events by a large margin so if he goes reading the work take this into account. <<less

The major con of this novel is so many stalling and unnecessary event that will pop up and killing the pace. The side characters is so bland and you will forget them in the next chapter. Also character development is so minimal, there's no much interaction except for talking about their mission.

You will get bored as the novel goes on because you surely feel like waiting for MC's to kick some ass, but yeah what MC's doing is so bland and you don't feel that much excitement.

It's a good novel... more>> tho, but you will find yourself skipping some chapter as you read it <<less

It was a pretty solid novel until it got to the sister arc where things got so unnecessarily long. The general quality of the story also started to fall at around this arc and at this point I just can't bring myself to read it any longer. Its quite unfortunate as the novel really was a great one before all the extra bull**** started piling up.

The heroines are somewhat annoying. The MC works because his competence makes you wonder on a chapterly basis why he doesn't want to be an emperor candidate. The pace is pretty stable throughout. Sure, the battle chapters are faster, but not that much fast. As for the battle scenes, I can say that I have read novels with worse battle scenes and worldbuilding.

One of the worst written novels

Jokes are out of place, MC is strong but doesn't use it efficiently enough

The darkness is too light

The story is about the contest for the throne yet none from the MC side gets harmed

Even though the main character is reckless, there are very little fights but very poorly written

All the pretty women seems to be attracted to the mc/his brother

Spoiler

Duke kleinert household is a powerful and influental aristrocrat that's why the MC wants to get their favor to join their side yet the one who guards the gate is his son?

[collapse]

Spoiler

For a smart and strategist MC he did a clumsy thing such as: He return to his room in the dukes house using teleport after he complete the request then took off his mask without knowing someone is inside just to reveal that he is Silver to the dukes daughter

[collapse]

Spoiler

MC ship his Beautiful older sister to a persistent stalker but good natured piggy duke?

[collapse]

Spoiler

The Hero is scared of water, because the hero accidentally drowned the MC when they bath together in the past/childhood days

[collapse]

Spoiler

Over 400 chapters in WN and only Finne know that the MC is Silver. Kinda boring right? The story would be interesting if he reveal his power in a right time. Like if the Hero knows his identity there will be more funny interactions between them or when there is an enemy like a demon that can't be beaten by anyone but the MC and the mask broke in front of loved ones/siblings he saved such after the intense battle that would be cool. But nope that won't happen (maybe)

[collapse]

Still interesting because of his secret and character interactions. Would be more interesting if there is little bit of political crap and more on character interactions and adventure. Still 4/5. <<less

You have to know what you're getting into before you judge it. It will be like walking into a chunni's wet dream (but in a kinda uncool, beta way; compared to Shadow, who does it in a cool, Alpha way).

Spoiler

I don't want to make it sound like I have hate for JP books, because I don't really (To Be a Power in the Shadows is A++). Normally shortcomings in the genre are made up in other ways like humor or art. Unfortunately this one lacks humor and has limited art.

[collapse]

It also has that distinct JP style that I can't really put a finger on, but tends to drag fantasy stories like this down. It might be slow pacing and bland characters, but mostly it's that the story has trouble drawing you in like others in the fantasy genre.

That being said, the translation is okay, but would greatly benefit from an editor. Story as a whole is fine, but I'm unlikely to finish it.

As a JP novel: 3.0

Overall (CN, KR, western) : 2.5 (but you know it's a JP fantasy going in, so go off above score) <<less

Not what I wanna read right now but not as awful as people make it out to be.

Most people’s biggest issue with this novel seems to basically be the Clark Kent/super man effect. Everyone thinks it’s extremely obvious but the reality is people aren’t nearly as observant or smart as they think they are. As an observer sitting outside the story things are obvious to us because we have all the facts, but if you were actually in the situation where you don’t have all the facts you’d behave differently.... more>> As a reader you don’t have the same emotions as someone in the situation does.

Obviously the author has failed to get your emotional investment but that’s more a characterization flaw.

In the end I dropped this. More because I realized it wasn’t going to be a fully happy go lucky story and that’s all I really want to read right now.

Its middle of the pack but the author is willing to let the MC suffer setbacks if temporarily. And while many characters are pretty flat the MC and his brother are slowly developing. <<less

The story seems good and somewhat thought out, but the grammar mistakes take you out of the story. An example of this is the use of synonyms where another word works better. An example of this would be saying he run from him. It just makes you stop reading for a second and ruins the story. Otherwise, decent story and idea.

The story is not bad. However the third arc is a disaster. It is almost unreadable with how wordy and overdone everything is. All character development takes a back seat while the plot is terribly strung along. It was very disappointing to see this lack of thoughtfulness after reading the first two arcs.
