A mysterious natural phenomenon caused the Earth to be plunged into darkness. The world turned into endless bloody chaos and mankind is on the brink of extinction…

Chu Yun Sheng, an ordinary white-collar worker, discovered his family heirloom, a book, shining a bizarre light by accident. Out of curiosity, he tried to study the book.

After long research, he still only understood a few symbols written in the ancient book. However, he was shocked when he figured out what messages the ancient book tried to tell him: the sun will disappear, and humanity is doomed…

He tried to spread the message, but no one believed him; his family and friends even tried to take him to see the psychiatrist. Eventually, he gave up telling anyone but prepared for the apocalypse in secret.

Until one day — the sun really disappeared…

Amazing novel in terms of making us see the different aspects of MC, the storyline is so different than other novels that makes us feel as though we are reading something new. We just don't where the novel is headed towards and that's what makes this novel worth reading, as always we read these novels for the journey not the end result (as most ends are disappointing). But if the journey is amazing enough, then we can always come back to this novel, for all the emotions it gives us.

OK let me get this straight out of the way.

Yes it's kinda bad in the first 100-200 chapters.

Yes the MC is somewhat a dumbass but that's because we're the readers.

Yes the translation is kinda shitty but it's fan translation, which is already somewhat better than machine translation.

Yes I used to want to rage-quit after couple dozens of chapters.

But the writing gets better through the story.

It's like a process of experimenting and learning to the author.

We see him and the story develop through time.

It's like an unpolished gem really.

I am surprised that this novel is rated so low. The story is very good, you can tell its a good story by how it can invoke all kind of emotions. Unlike all other Chinese novels the MC does not think with his d*ck or is not arrogant. You will not see a lot of plot armor if you look at the story as the whole. If you gave seen an anime called Trigun you will get a similar feel to that.

Well, anyway I am not a good review writes.... more>> But I am very picky when it comes to giving ratings to novels. I hate novels with Echi, BL, Harem and young masters. I hate cruel MCs like the one in that warlock something novel. And this one does not have any of that cra*. The story will make you sad, but you should expect that knowing there is a tragedy tag on this novel. I wish there were more novels with good stories like this one. <<less

To be honest, I'm less than twenty chapters into the novel and already I can see signs of idiocy that usually only sprouts up much later when the author has run out of things to write about.

Spoiler

The MC encounters a group of people surrounded by bugs and notices that the typical middle-aged man is abandoning this young girl to save himself. After he kills the bugs he decides to lecture the girl on her choice of relationship. This raised a red flag for me as I can easily see him going off to stick his nose into other people's business for some inane reason, and lo and behold, less than ten chapters later I was proven right.

The government in this story is clearly in a huge state of unrest and is going out out their mind trying to find ways to combat the apocalypse. There is a scene early on when an ability user is taken away and never heard of again. In short, bad things are happening. In this sort of situation, you would think that it would be wise to lay low and not attract more attention than necessary. You'd be wrong. The MC blurts out his full name to someone he plans on taking to a military compound, as if he was afraid that the government didn't know what he could do and who he is. While this doesn't pinpoint exactly who he is, it wouldn't be hard to connect the dots with so few people with these kinds of powers around. Hmmm, someone who can use ice arrows and is named Chu Yunsheng... Hey Dale, wasn't there that rumour of ice arrows around building 8? Get someone to check that out will you? Yeah thanks. The repercussions of something like this is obvious, when the world turns to sh*t so does normal human laws. His family are still out and about, so it'd be simple for them to coerce him into giving himself up.

Soon after this, he chanced upon a group of students and their teacher, which confused me to no endless degree because for what godforsaken reason would people still go to school in the apocalypse? That aside, of course they have a problem that he can potentially solve (getting medicine from a hospital), and of course he agrees to it almost immediately. His decision is made with zero information on the amount of bugs at the location or even scouting out the area in case it's occupied by the government or meta humans. This is done after mentioning how precious medicine is, so clearly the author knows that people will be vying for the resources there.

What annoys me the most is not that the MC is a blubbering idiot, it's the fact that he's not self-aware enough to realise that he is rash and easily tunnel visions in on what he feels at that moment, consequences be damned. His power does not equate to what he wants to achieve at that time, but he dives in headfirst because that's the "manly thing to do". There is next to no hope of character progression for someone this old and yet still so ignorant. At most he'll get someone smarter with him to make all the decisions for him.

[collapse]

TLDR: The MC is an idiot. Don't read if you want any sort of actual thinking involved. <<less

I can't continue. I just can't. This Protagonist's advantage during the apocalypse is knowledge in the form of a book. The book also gives him some mystical cultivation help, but it is the knowledge that helped him the most. Hell, the author even made the MC untalented in cultivation of Yuan Qi.

So comes the problem. The world goes dark. Monsters appear. Humans are helpless. The Protagonist has on hand a book with knowledge that is the equivalent of the Fire brought to humanity by Prometheus. With fire, humanity managed to... more>> carve out the world for our own. But what does the protagonist do with his book? Not a f*cking thing. Photocopy it along with the notes of what he had translated so far so others could cultivate and fight back against the monsters is aparently not an option. He is worried about being kidnapped and studied by the government. What? His advantage is knowledge. Something that can be copied and distributed anonymously. Nobody has to know that he has the original. In fact, if the knowledge is spread, he wouldn't stick out so much as the only cultivator in a word of superpowered awakened people and regular folk.

Withholding this sort of knowledge is selfish. Extremely so. His choice doomed billions to death. I might not care so much if the author acknowledged that fact, but no. The talismans in the books could strengthen humanity. It could protect people. It's as if that never crossed the protagonist's mind. As if he thought knowledge was a super exclusive suprpower that couldn't be shared. <<less

I have not read this novel when I saw it like 2 years ago due to bad reviews. But checked it out recently and was positively surprised. It's decent. Albeit flawed just like MC's illogical behaviour, but he himself said & noticed he's crazy and has mental issues so we can't really say he's braindead and so on. Besides, there's more to that

Spoiler

Many times some alien races were using their technologies to manipulate his mind. MC ended up having multiple personalities. How did it end? I've heard that his human personality died, and his alien personality - extremely cold-blooded - took over the control of his body in the later chapters

[collapse]

Despite the flaws I rate this novel 5 star, made me cry after Dumb Insect arc. If you don't like overflowing tragedy you better stop reading this novel after this arc. It might look like the worst thing ever

Spoiler

but even more sh*t happens later on; this novel is basically crazy, everything is crazy. You better not read it if you are depressed or whatever or you might end up crazy too... MC of this novel is so unfortunate, I can't help but pity him, I probably never met such a guy in the 1200 novels I have read. Just reading what happens to him is a painful process and it gets even more crazier and painful later on. It can't be even called a struggle for a better world. He is basically struggling for experiencing even more pain............

[collapse]

Sigh I have had enough of the tragedies in this novel so decided to drop it. I was curious if there will be a happy ending. This is what I found:

Spoiler

Of course not, it is a freaking tragedy. Human MC died, alien MC took over his body despite the fact that he was begging alien MC very hard to keep his family's memory. Earth has been destroyed. Later on, the human race was forced to leave the solar system. MC's fleet was drifting in the endless dark universe, he brought most of the creatures on Earth with him before it got destroyed, looking for the human beings that had left Earth "millions of years ago": those from chapters 1-555. He was looking for people from his time. In Volume 9 he agreed to work with the last pure human resistance force to "go back in time". However, what he and those pure human beings did not know was that, the leader of the pure human beings resistance was one of the aliens. Besides, at this point, the human race was nearly extinct, so it's not like it mattered anyway. He failed and was trapped in the endless simulation for the entire geological period. Author implies this starting Volume 10 by giving hints such as city name changes from their old names in China to current Shanghai and Nanjing.

[collapse]

So.. yeah. A very very very very dark sci-fi novel. I don't want to continue reading into MC's misery..

Also, readers have been saying that MC typed a lot of stuff about apocalypse on the Internet (volume 1) yet was never investigated when it was revealed later that government knew about apocalypse. Well, this "has been explained" in chapter 560 and 562.

The novel is basically a survival type. For every creature that is not

Spoiler

not a god. Basically all the creatures in the universe apart from those "gods" were doomed from the very beginning. First human race, then elemental races, then crystal being races etc. While MC's space fleet was drifting in the space, they encountered many other alien races, and those alien races' planets were also destroyed. Human races were drifting in the endless universe, and any habitable planets they reached were destroyed or dying. But because the universe kept expanding, it took them longer and longer to reach the next galaxy.

[collapse]

Spoiler

MC eventually realised that he was trapped inside a simulation.

[collapse]

Not sure how it ends, whether the author wrote more to the novel or not. Many info has been taken from translator spoilers I believe.

This is a cliche story. Hero has no real plan or goal. He's not clever or talented. He goes from place to place relying purely on luck to survive. Nothing stands out about this story. In a world where most have superpowers and can kill, people go around picking fights with strangers over nothing. It's very boring, forced, unrealistic, and repetitive.

Kekel hit it spot on. I was trying to give it a 2 star but got 1 on accident.

I'm not angry at the repetition but how the story cycles through he same storyline. Most long xianxia novels repeats the same plot over and over in the story; join sect, get stronger, go to hidden area to get benefits, tournament arc, join stronger sect and repeat. Most novels are a variation of this formula.

Spoiler

Problem with this story is the cycle it uses in the story is just annoying as f*ck. The cycle is: train to get stronger while saying to yourself you won't get involved in troublesome stuff till you stronger, gets involved anyways, builds up a life/sect/army/brothers/family/friends/ect then lose everything. Repeat. Literally, no exaggeration, this is the cycle.

He literally loses everything and everyone at the end of each cycle. He even loses his body at one point. He builds up a life and makes connections and then they are all taken away when the cycle is over and it repeats.

After a while it just get painful to read because nothing matter. His friends? They're all going to die or he'll lose them some other way. Family? Either they'll die or he'll lose them. Comrades? Brothers in arms? Town? Sect? Army? Faction? They'll either die or he'll lose them in the end.

The old cycle stories use might get old sometime but this got old alot faster because your just basically reading to watch the MC lose everything everytime he builds anything up.

For me this novel is one of most memorable on entire nu site. A very peculiar atmosphere of hopelessness. Of inevitable doom encroaching slowly but surely. Protagonist got hold onto texts that presage of world's apocalypse and thus readied himself for calamity with help of said texts. He s stronger that your ordinary everyman however anything he do is but a pebble thrown into raging waters. Betrayals, death of anyone but protagonist become but a normal occurrence in this story. First few arcs are very interesting to read however as... more>> cloning was introduced (so any underdog could die few times) and I caught up with new releases I dropped it. <<less

The title is Dark Blood Age but the story is just way too dark. The bloodshed is okay, the struggle to survive is okay. The life or death battles against strange insects is okay. But what grinds the reader down is the never ending sh*t show that is human tragedy, greed, betrayal, selfishness, revenge, etc.

Even at 100 chapters, I'm already burned out of it. You can only deal with reading about people getting chopped into pieces, children losing their parents, parents losing their children, people losing their minds, people selling... more>> each other out, being a**holes, being cowards, being degenerates pieces of shit.

The MC is supposedly this 'holier than thou' type of character that stands above that but the never ending treadmill of that stuff just keeps coming and coming. <<less

First off, I'd like to say that I had a difficult time deciding between three and four stars. I went with three due to lost potential. Had the setting stuck with the apocalyptic Starship Troopers-ish flavor I wouldn't hesitate to give this five stars without a second thought, the author really thrives in that area.

Kinda flaws but not really:

  • In the beginning, until MC starts interacting with other characters, the narration is robotic for lack of a better word. Like the dullest biography you've ever seen. I have mixed feelings on this. On one hand it makes the story incredibly hard to catch the reader, on the other it is definitively not filler and I have to give the author props for deciding not to extend thirty some chapters into eighty plus.
  • The world building gets very, very, detailed. Exploring theoretical properties of other dimensions is cool the first few times, but sometimes I just want to get on with the story rather than explore different aspects of them.
Flaws:

  • The shift from surviving the apocalypse to cultivation/intrigue. Don't get me wrong, I'll happily read a cultivation/intrigue novel however I feel the author's talent for cultivation/intrigue pales in compassion to his talent in scrambling to survive.
  • The tragedy. There is far too much of it. Now I don't say this because I dislike the tragedy and how it affects the plot, but because it just becomes so repetitive and predictable. Where other novels go as rise>country toppling beauty (CTB) >issues due to CTB's beauty>tournament>world toppling beauty (WTB) >issues due to WTB's beauty.... Dark Blood Age goes scramble>tragedy>setback>tragedy>setback>betrayal>setback....
Chapter 545 is the last chapter of the first book, I'm currently undecided as to continue onto what I can of book two or not. If I had reviewed this somewhere around chapter 350 I wouldn't hesitate to give this 4 of 5 stars, with the missing star solely... more>> due to the difficulty in grabbing the readers attention during the beginning. Sadly due to the repetitiveness throughout all of book one I felt it was necessary to knock off another star. <<less

I wonder how many people were also tricked into avoiding this story by that ridiculous top review? Oh, he read to chapter 500? He has to know what he is talking about, right? Well chapter 500+ has been released for over a year, and you should judge for yourself.

This story is a solid 3.5-4 by webnovel standards. The plot is incoherent and disjointed, and there are no particularly entrancing characters; however, the unique setting will draw you in if you're familiar with where the author is drawing his inspiration from.

A... more>> lot of the "problems" stems from the fact the protagonist is an office worker, not a genius reincarnator or some legendary transmigrator. He is just a schlub who lucked out with a manual. So he makes mistakes, he is illogical, he gets afraid, he fails, and so on. Nothing is worse than people who go on about, "IF IT WERE ME, I'D DO EVERYTHING PERFECT! WHY DOESN'T HE FINISH X BEFORE HE STARTS DOING Y! WHY HE SO STOOPID!?" Because the protagonist literally has no idea what the hell is going all the way up until the mid 200s and has to learn like a normal human being.

Don't get attached to characters other than the protagonist either. Everyone is fair game.

____________________

There are genuine problems with the story. Like most webnovels there's no overarching theme to connect the narrative to a central idea. Most characters are 2 dimensional and don't show much growth or emotional development (But to be fair, that is because most characters don't survive that long.). The author is terrible with transitions, and every time-skip is jarring and confusing.

Once again, read the story for yourself. If you can slog through the "wait a minute, weren't we just talking about [blank]?" moments, you'll probably enjoy it. <<less

The translation quality for the early chapters are pretty bad but it does get better later on. Unfortunately, the entire novel will still be plagued with wrong punctuation, spelling mistakes, bad grammar, and words left in Chinese pinyin.

Our MC is a University graduate but he's more like your average joe working as a cashier in the supermarket. He is kind-hearted, not very smart, but slowly becomes stronger because of family heirloom book that he deciphers to give him some cultivation techniques. He is trying to survive in the apocalypse where... more>> alien insects have invaded Earth for some reason. Since there are no laws and humans have turned back to the animals they are, our MC is trying to maintain his principles and holding onto the only thing keeping him from going insane - friends and relatives. This is a very important concept because all his dumb decisions are based on trying to hold onto that emotional anchor.

There are a few factors that stops the novel from becoming a four or five star novel and why so many people rated it one star. I agree that keklel's review kind of nails it but it's kind of exaggerated angry mode.

Our MC somehow keeps falling for traps made by people smarter than him and he's just like a chess piece being tossed around. When the author makes a MC being played around consistently to the point where the reader doubts everything everyone in the novel says, it gets very tiring. Readers either go along with the journey or imagine themselves as the MC. If you make the MC a stray cat that keeps getting tortured everywhere he goes, it turns off the reader.

The MC is supposed to be super strong or even overpowered inside the novel but that author keeps handicapping him either with a X problem or a Y reduction in powers. It keeps reading like our MC is Superman but loves to carry kryptonite inside his underwear. There were many times the novel was going in a good direction with new ideas etc but then once again, it fizzles because the MC gets handicapped. He just can't win in life.

In the future, the readers kind of find out why the alien insects have invaded and suddenly, there's confusing mystery on top of mysteries as the MC finds out more things. Now, because everyone has been lying to trap the MC, us as readers aren't even sure if the mysteries are real or not when they've been revealed. It could be just another trap to make the MC do something s*upid, again.

My recommendation is to give it a read because I was hooked in the beginning. But as the mysteries get revealed, the story feels rather idiotic and similar to the bland fizzle I keep experiencing. <<less

If you're looking for typical cultivation novel where the MC will steamroll others or such things, you can just skip this. But if you're looking for a really good story, you can definitely find it here. There's huge plots everywhere and the tragedy is heartwrenching and good at the same time. The author tends to do a lot of world building that is a bit too complex, but the world building behind it is still good. Please give this novel a try if you're looking for an awesome story.

All right I’ll admit that the translation is not as good as the professional translators out there. But the story has heart can really tug at the heart strings. It doesn’t rely on the standard cliche’s for powering up the MC and some of the story arcs can be a little bizarre but I find that refreshing. It can get pretty dark as the MC experiences the horror of the apocalypse. But those times demonstrate character growth. Definitely does not deserve so many terrible ratings in my opinion.

MC is consistently weak (there is pretty much never a point where his life isn't under imminent threat from the bugs), s*upid (he just constantly makes poor decisions), and selfish (he hoards the secret knowledge left by the ancients to protect humanity all to himself and makes staggeringly poor use of it). Like I wouldn't mind so much, him being a selfish prick leaving the rest of humanity out to dry that is, if he actually got anything out of it - like if by hoarding the secret knowledge he... more>> became really strong or something but... no. it's goodn't lol

Depends on you...

Of course the story is good or the plot rather, but boy the MC is annoying.

... more>> It's always like that.

Btw is this chinese novel?
If so, then it makes sense.

They are good at creating plots, starting a story.
Might be great if a japanese wrighted it though. They are cool lol, they don't divert much from what they want.
A chinese creating plots and a japanese writhing it would be cool.

So anyways, like the others. This one is cool. Good plot, good start. Then as like the others the MC might annoy you and of course the other characters too......

Now that I think about it, koreans are good at creating characters!
They are also good at engaging their readers!

Boy would be cool if a chinese created an idea of a story then hired a japanese to wright it.
Then that japanese is asking for an idea to a korean, asking for creating a situations and character personality to be exact.

Boyyyy! Would be amazing! Lolol...

Oh yeah, the author has lots of control in this one. I mean not literally, Of course the author would be in control of everything lol silly me...

Anyways, I don't really knows how to explain it. Ahrr🤔 he's trying to control a lot of situation too much??? It's hard to describe lolol

But I assume lots will not mind that kind of thing. Doesn't mean you hate it, others will also hate it. We're all yin and yang yow lol. <<less
