The first time they met, he was a downtrodden prince everybody bullied whilst she was a small palace maid responsible for washing the clothes of the people in the palace.

Twenty years of companionship; he is the only one capable of influencing her emotions. For him, she is willing to immerse her hands in the blood of others, to help him rule this world.

Even though she wasn’t the one he loved, and she wasn’t the one he married, she insisted on remaining by his side, aiming to become the one and only woman capable of standing by his side whilst he held court and the one and only woman in his harem – even if doing so would cause her to get insulted by the entire world.

However, that person whom she loved so much, that person for whom she committed all sorts of preposterous acts for – wanted her to die.

He said, “In this lifetime, I don’t wish to see you ever again!”

She returned to him as a spirit, yet he begged for another lifetime together.

“If we have another lifetime together, I want you to love me and respect me from a very young age, and help me clear all the obstacles standing in my way. You would be forced to watch me love one, and marry another – but both of them would not be you. You must love me so crazily and so deeply that everybody knows about it, and yet you would never be able to truly receive my entire love and affection. On innumerable occasions, you would be misunderstood by me, and hurt by me. The only few tears you shed in your entire lifetime would be for me, and ultimately you would have to die for me. Even after you die, you would not be allowed to rest in peace – instead, you would transform into a spirit and return to my side… Only if you do all these, would you be able to compensate me for what I have done in this lifetime.”

I cried so much reading this novel. Unlike the summary, surprisingly the ML is a good man. So it's not about the revenge, it's about their love story.

The pain is because FL has so little confidence in herself, mainly due to their social status difference. In addition with ML's ambiguousness, it results in major misunderstanding.

What I like the most is the ending. How FL and ML want to let it go.

This book tested my patience to the max, at every start of another chapter I was resisting the urge to skip to 20th chapter to see his reaction but author's notes stopped me every time. And is it just me who is disappointed by ML's immediate reaction to the news?
Spoiler

He fainted, which is probably more than being sad but I wanted some shock, dialogues, resolutions, actions instead of just fainting.

[collapse]

I was hoping we get an ML POV that shatters other misunderstandings which we din't so Im guessing MC is right about many things regarding ML being cunning and using her then. Damn these MLs who think and think and think but never communicate. A single sentence about why he loves the one he loves should have fixed at least half of their relationship but no, things have to be dragged until it is too late : (.

An absolute tearjerker! I don't particularly like reading tragedies because it would always leave me devasted in the end, like now. However, this novel really did scratch my itch of reading the male lead regret his past actions. It was a worthy read!

Recommended? Yes

I didn't like the too many flashbacks because I was expecting MC to be reincarnated based on the synopsis. Still, it has its painful moments and sweet moments and overall bittersweet feelings so...3 stars. I actually found a few beautiful phrases such as Si Ze's inscription on his only painting of Hong Jian:

“As a flower is to beauty, so is she. Thus she destroys the flower as cheerfully as she destroys me.”

... more>> That right there is worth a whole star for me.

But honestly, SZ and HJ's entire fate be easily summarized by another phrase in the book:

Spoiler

“So it turns out that twenty years ago that winter, from when they met for the very first time, they had already missed each other.”

I'm unsure how to rate this. The male lead is useless, weak scum. All he can do is cry. However, is that really a bad thing when the whole premise of the story, as laid out in the summary, is that of an ungrateful emperor? It's exactly like what the novel description said.

It's a short, okay read. It's good if you like tragedy.

one of my favourite tragedy-romance novels on here.

i’m a sucker for tragedy tag novels and this does not disappoint, make sure you have your tissues prepared for the last chapters.

the story lead up is slow but really good and satisfying when everything falls into place. Though it’s very bittersweet I feel like this story was perfect- as someone who reads tragedy love stories often (yes I like crying) knowing that they in fact do/have always loved each other soothes my broken heart.

i love the ML and MC- honestly one of... more>> my favourite CN main characters. So real and flawed. Though the ML shuns MC because of a s*upid misunderstanding you can tell he loves her.

i can say a lot more about how much I love the story and all the reasons to read, if you don’t usually read tragedy tag be well prepared and don’t rate the novel badly because it does or doesn’t have a HE, honestly a 10/10 from me! <<less

Now, this novel truly stayed at the core of tragedy mixed with fiction. I liked the length of the chapters, the dialogue between the FL and the ML through the whole past of major events and minor events as well. The ending was well deserved, the author didn't disappoint at all. I didn't cry, but it did make me have watery eyes.

It has it's weird plotholes in the midst of this story. The most notorious one is the plot, being comedy designed as tragedy, like the:
Spoiler

Hot soup=fall in love at first sight>20 years of accompany

Glad the FL escaped all of this bullsh*t fate twist, from the ML as well

P.S.: Bed scene, not detailed, only the aftermath.

Goodnight.

Cried so hard my congested nose sort of made me sick. Anyway, the review.

Its very good. Very sad. I agree with a past reviewer’s criticism that it was a little drawn out but after finishing I think it was a wise choice.

The meat of this story is placed in the flashbacks and childhood memories with the MC and ML and how they reached the point in time.

There’s not really any surprises from the synopsis. Read this if you want a good cathartic cry, The misunderstandings being resolved at the end... more>> made me cry even more.

Spoiler

This is not a happy ending. Not for me at least, but I supposed I shouldn’t have got my hopes up with the description saying it like it is. I wasn’t really surprised by how the misunderstanding of the soup bowl culminated as it’s pretty textbook misunderstanding but it still made me cry. So hard.

[collapse]

What made me cry the most?

This is a long spoiler haha but in short; the ending. The ending made me cry the most. Everything about the last two or so chapters.

Spoiler

Definitely the ending. The part when the emperor finally FINALLY discovered her death. How he reacted, how the small eunuch reacted. How he felt when he realised he burnt the painting of her too.

Especially when he wanted to die to meet her in the next life in the dream at the epilogue. The line about how even if she wanted to be a little woman and just a simple commoner wife he would leave his position just to accompany her again. (Making me cry again as I type that sentence. These misunderstandings... were so dumb. He offered to make her empress and she still... sigh.) Also when he found the misunderstanding about the soup and how it was really her all along. It made me annoyed that it wasn’t a HE but again, expected.

Also I cried all over again when another reviewer revealed that apparently afterwards she ended up surviving (?) because the general was the boy from her childhood. So she went back to the emperor and he got better and then she told him she wanted to travel the world and then left. And then how he waited alone for 30 years for her to come back and then it turns out she’s died very early in from her injuries and he knew but waited anyway. Just... the ending.

Personally, this story has a lot of aspects which I liked.

The FL is strong and capable, with grey morals. She has her flaws, but I think overall she is quite likeable. Surprisingly I did not find the ML to be utter tr*sh, maybe the chapters on their childhood made him more sympathetic to me, but I did find some aspects of him to be likeable, although he did do the FL wrong.

Spoiler

And I think FL's comment about them not loving each other equally is spot on. He doesn't appreciate her enough

[collapse]

The way the book delved into the development of FL's relationship with ML made the angst hit harder when it did, so I thought it was a good move on the author's part

My favorite part of the book however was probably

Spoiler

When the second FL call out the ML about how he treasured the one bowl of soup he think she gave him over the 20 years of companionship between him and FL lolll. Second FL is quite likeable tbh and maybe it's because the story was told when the FL is already a ghost so there's no petty harem scheming

[collapse]

Overall it's a well-written angst, that isn't too heavy, and the ending isn't that sad, more bittersweet especially from the FL's POV, I'd definitely recommend reading it. <<less

this rotted in my reading list too long and I specifically made another list just for this because 'it can make me cry'. Haha, it did. Not the sobbing kind, but the teardrop and lips quivering kind with gasp because wtf was that plot twist!?!??!?!

It is but a case of simple misunderstanding from the very very very start that you can't help but scream at the author and ask why the f*ck is this happening. Ultimately, everything ended with death.

There are others calling MC s*upid, but I don't really think... more>> she's that s*upid. In this situation, everything she did (which are all for the smooth ascension for ML) was, while others were impulsively done, were well-thought-out and planned. She plans a retreat for herself and knows how to distance herself and things. Though, it came out as manipulation, which, looking at it from another perspective, it kinda is. Which is the same case for ML. They're both unconsciously manipulating each other.

While reading I wanted to hate someone but found that I can't because they're both in the wrong and they're also both sweet and just perfect for each other. But sigh, heavens did not let the both of them live a simple life.

This is tragedy played as comedy. The MC is very mentally strong, something I can never be, but I know in that situation she is forced to be..

Spoiler

《At first, she was very scared. She was always very scared, but when she was scared, Lin Si Ze did not comfort her. Therefore, she thought——Probably because no one will comfort me at first, I thus felt I should not be scared.》an excerpt, very painful.

[collapse]

Spoiler

In some ways, I do pity ZYN, she is the reason for MC and ML's th**ny relationship but at the same time, she is only a thorn that was put against her will. Sigh.

[collapse]

The ending was very abrupt though. I wanted to know what happened to ML after. <<less

After reading the ending I hoped there was more but o well...

It brought me to tears and at the same time made me look silly (laughing, tearing up then smiling again lol)

At the end I can only say "No regrets!"

It was worth it and your time if you'd choose to give this novel a chance (>.~) !

I have a bad habit of avoiding angsty BE stories no matter how good the stories are. For some reason, though, I was in the mood for angst, so this was the perfect length for the period I was in that mood. I cried HARD. I wish there was a HE (in a next life or so) but to be honest, this was a satisfying end to the relationship between this couple.

The author is really good. I felt EVERYTHING; joy, sweetness, shyness, apprehension, pain, defeat... EVERYTHING.
I love how the author was able to create a balance between the current events and the flashbacks without dragging the story or making one lose interest. It broke my heart but I truly loved this story. There’s really a love/hate mixture of feelings here.

No spoilers nor summary. Go ahead and read it for yourself. This is the kind of story that needs to be read to really be able to grasp the emotions it provokes.

Also it’s clearly Tragedy and tragedy is meant to be sad, frustrating, heartbreaking, full of bad choices, regrets and without necessarily having a «happy ending ». The beauty of the plot lies in the ability to put you in the shoes of the characters and journey with them so don’t come with false expectations.

This is just the best angst novel I have ever read.... ending is kind of happy I guess for the FL as she was free from the pain and resentment that that sh*t of ML made her feel. Angst novels should end like this where the tr*sh ML will have regrets till his death and onwards..👏👏👏

I have truly no words to praise... author had tested my patience as well showed wonderful tragic story

Our Female Lead is actually I found myself to love... to able forgive everything she had sufferred.

You will look into her you will release that she was not a foolish person, she was just a lonely soul who found her Salvation in her love for male, the very same love which lead her to death and later to be contented with it.

But Most Tragic person is ML.. he was actually a jerk, a... more>> moron who didn't even realize the value of person, who stood by his side, protect him and went through thick and thin at his worst... Ungrateful man who can't even recognize his feeling.

I wanted story to continue to his most Tragic ending, where he would realize at place where he stands he is Most lonely person, where he would witness real side of human being, there would not a single person his side who would willingly to do everything selflessly for him, there would no one to sooth his heart, no one whom he could place his trust truly. To make him reliase that only person who had selflessly stood by his side for his first half of life and protect him from many ugly side of human was driven by death by him itself <<less

A well-written tragedy. While the ending is already somewhat clear, it was still a very captivating story of the events that lead up to the death and what follows. Both translators did a decent job of conveying the emotions and thoughts of the main character.
