As long as she could be loved, she wouldn’t mind being starved or beaten. However, when she was thrown to the fire as a sacrifice for her sister, her hopes were shattered.

“Adopt me.”

Leslie, who barely survived in the fire, went to the Duchess, who was looking for a little child to adopt as her daughter.

“No, because I know you’re the best dark magic user in the empire.”

“Leslie, come this way.”

“No, yesterday you ate with first brother, so today you should eat with second brother.”

“Leslie, I have your favorite jelly here.”

My brothers make a contest every morning, asking me to sit next to them. Hey, what is this relationship?

This has really high ratings and I don't hate it but the extreme lack of agency of the MC is alot to deal with. It's one of those stories where she is showered with love from the adoptive family. And that's the main focus of the author. Which isn't bad because it does character build and you end up rooting for her in moment. She's has such lack of agency to apply those skills in a timely fashion. She spends a large part of the book hiding her skills. we... more>> got like so far with her just sorta being carried around or sitting on her butt. It's a fantasy world we barely explore. Rather frustrating. We get massive word count towards floating cookies in cocoa but very few action scenes where she has agency. Err... I gave it 4 stars because it's passable. I wouldn't reread. I wouldn't recomend but I don't hate it.

Weirdly, I enjoyed the story about the mother duke then I enjoyed about the daughter. AGain, not this books fault that it wasn't my taste for MC. Really, it's mostly well excuted. Just not my cup of tea. <<less

Ohhh... it's such a shame, I've being buying the manhwa on Tapas, and when I saw that someone was translating it on here, I was exited, but I'm sorry, I'm probably not going to read a MTL version of this story because I have being ruined by the paid translation of the manhwa, I tried, I really tried, and I appreciate the work of the MTL people, but since I'm way ahead and already reading a better translation I can't.

But I wish you the best, I'll leave my review here... more>> anyway in case anyone is interested, I know not everyone can spend money on pay sites and MTL is an excellent way to read them even if the essence is diluted a bit because of the translation.

Leaving all that behind, I have to say that I am in love with this story very much, The world building is incredibly well done, the characterizations are heartbreaking AND heartwarming, if anything the story shines because of the characterizations.

The "bad guys" are, simply put, irredeemable, but very well portrayed and you "understand" them, you can't accept them, because they really are bad guys but you understand them... I have to say that most of this series are bad at portraying realistic antagonists, you could create an scarecrow that say "bad person" and leave it at that because they are completely unrelatable, but the antagonists on here make a great part of what this story is, and they are used effectively to encompass what will happen in the story.

Then we have our sweet, beautiful MC, who the author has gone to great lengths to make relatable... she's such a charismatic character that all you want is to do what the good guys are doing, hug her and give her everything she wants and fulfil her every wish, and above all, protect her from any harm... I think this is of the very few stories that have made me cry, and it wasn't because of physical pain, it was because of something that I hadn't noticed until it was pointed out and gave me a great shock (because it's there since the start of the novel, I was too enthralled on the characterizations to notice it) enough for me to stop reading for a bit while I wiped my tears... I won't put spoilers, but as a dad, it hurt... it hurt a lot.

Last but not least, the Monstrous Duke and her family, (yes, her) great characters, all the Dukes family are everything you hoped for and more.

All this wonderfully crafted characterizations in service of a fantastic world of mystery and magic, with politics and intrigue, I can't comment much more on that part because since the focus are characterizations, the world is still being built, until the last part of the manhwa that haves being released, I just got to say that the set up is very interesting and can't wait for the pay off to come knocking on the door.

So yeah, read this definitely, if you like well written stories with heart, you should definitely read this.

Not putting stars because my review is based on the manhwa. <<less

I actually read this in the manhwa version. Love how the story goes. Leslie, the FL, is weak at first, but little by little she found her courage to fight those monsters in her family consists of crazy father, uninterested mother, and selfish older sister. Leslie is then adopted by the duchess. The duchess family is hilarious lol, and they love Leslie very much. Bad guys got what they deserves at the end :)

I’m a bit confused on how this works and how to read the manga but this is such a good story, there’s a lot of character development and just so much love in this family

Actually came here from the manhwa version and I loved that our MC Leslie grows from a timid girl to a strong person who will fight for her rights. I love the family that adopts her and how they all truly care for each member and this familial love allows Leslie to finally in the end get rid of the chains of vengeance.

Also the romance is so cute... Like I felt I was about to overdose on sugar.

I adore the MC's journey of growth and thus I rate this high.
