Once upon a time, there was a swordsman who wielded the sword, lived by the sword, and died by the sword.

After days and months of battle, the swordsman chose death by his own free will, but was reborn as Fay Hanse Diestburg, the third prince of the kingdom of Diestburg.

Wanting to distance himself from his past life where he lived as if possessed by the sword, Fay decided to just lead a life of a wastrel, earning the nickname: “tr*sh Prince”.

However, one day, because of a pact with the neighboring kingdom’s Afillis royal house, Fay is sent to war, leading reinforcement troops. On the battlefield, Fay witnesses a scene of despair, as the “Hero”, an existence possessing power rivaling tens of thousands, ravaged the battlefield.

Fay considered returning to the kingdom, but a certain knight’s death manages to shake his heart, thus he decided to wield the sword once again — the legend of the strongest lazy prince begins!

Would give it 3.5 but nu wouldn't have it.

If you've read the lazy swordmaster and didn't like it, you aren't gonna love this one.

It started off good, like really good. Then it became... Meh but readable.

The MC is the edgiest protagonist I've ever seen. And I've read dungeon defense, lazy swordmaster and mirai Nikki.

And while some of the aforementioned stories are interesting, this one us just edge abound and nothing more.

Like, there's that character ... more>>
Spoiler

who wears a black overcoat, uses a f*cking scythe as his main weapon and another that cut off his finger just to make a point and they aren't even close in terms of edge to the mc

[collapse]

There was that tiiiny bit of character development and so far, that was all. He's just a super edgy dude who's also super stronk.

As for every other character, they either love the MC or are cannon fodder.

Well, it's still readable so it gets a solid 3.5 in my book <<less

Absolutely beautiful, I always look forward to the new chapter of this story because it is just that damn good!

I like the potential romance, but even if that doesn't come into fruition it is still a nice little subplot.

His past life is very mysterious and cool with a heavy tie to his current one due to what he saw what wielding a sword meant. This is one great MC and probably will be a badass one (I think he is badass even before his fighting).

I can see that this novel... more>> has a monstrous amount of potential and am hyped to see what comes up next. <<less

I'm feeling very conflicted about this right now. I love the premise. It's simple and it's supposed to be sweet, right? It's pretty straightforward.

I don't mind the mental anguish. In fact, it's one of the things I enjoy. It's just not written convincingly enough that I can abandon the plot in the typical way JP novels are written. It's tries to be meaningful but the struggle is pretty shallow. It's as if, the suffering is just self pity. That's pretty much why it might take a while for me to... more>> actually finish this.

TL;DR: Its not bad, there are just other better options. <<less

Imagine this, a random dude asks who you are and your reply is - "I am the third prince X, a man who is burdened by his past"

If it was like a single epic moment like in gladiator it would invoke positive emotion but this novel tries to invoke self pity so much each chapter it feels cheap and cringe.

This novel gets annoying the more you read.

... more>> V1 every other line the MC calls himself tr*sh prince to the point of cringe, but people act really serious.

It's established early on that the MC has a tragic past. Normally you would hide hint it but the details are revealed latter down the line once the reader is connected with the character.

But from the first chapter the past in your face. Half of each chapter is the MC monologuing about the same 5-6 lines in different forms and this halts the progress of the story and takes away immersion.

It gets annoying because everyone is sympathetic to MC for no reason even the villans. It's like they have a look at the MC and instantly know he's sad and he's getting dragged by something but they can't help him, rinse repeat.

To top it off, there is no romance at all so far. Can't even look forward character interactions between the essays of self pity. <<less

It's just a Beta MC + Swordsman.

Don't expect too much. He's not lazy at all.

This novel is very conflicting and it's difficult grasping this novel.
Spoiler

First he makes good points on why he shouldn't live by the Sword. But all he does is that. He has no thoughts of his own and just lets others use his 'Sword'

[collapse]
He does not follow his own advice and it's just a lot of irrelevant information that makes it very contradicting.

Romance: You claim you love MC, yet you put the Kingdom Loyalty before him and still knowingly inflict pain on him making him fight. [From what I can understand. Or am I wrong? The story makes no sense]
Spoiler

He says it hurts wielding the Sword. But he shows no sign of sadness. Just be a Sword for others. A child with a gun not knowing what to do with it. He's weak-hearted and can only listen to others.

[collapse]

If this were Harem, at least he'd have a goal. I'm dumbfounded this got such beautiful art..

MC had a good reason to hide his strength more than just avoiding attention. MC is a reincarnated person who had been through plenty battles and bloodshed. Added with flashbacks, it makes a complex character that you want to root/care for.

A downside is that the MC is just too self-deprecating. I'm the tr*sh-prince over and over. In his inner monologue and dialogue. I half get it, he didn't want anybody to have expectations on him, but he says it all the time that it almost comes out attention seeking and... more>> disingenuous.

No harem or any romance (as of now). I don't know if the LN marketplace is just satiated with harems or I just reading a lot of it. It felt like a fresh breathe of air that there's a japanese isekai LN when girls are not flocking, hearts in their eyes over the MC. This gave the opposite effect where I hoped the MC finds a love interest.

As of now, I rated highly. <<less

As far as reincarnation stories go, this one isn't terrible. The MC isn't some useless schoolboy or drained out salaryman who gets shoved into the body of a noble. He's been completely shattered by his previous life, constantly covered in blood and never able to stop fighting until the day he died.

There is quite a bit of repetitiveness when it comes to the feelings and memories MC has towards his past life, but I find that makes the story seem more realistic. He has such severe PTSD that these memories... more>> of loss and strife are on his mind all the time. Meh story, but well written and translated. <<less

MC is immature, whiny little child, who is stuck up in the past (past life).

According to MC outside God everybody is weak. He doesn't understand the difference between the word strong and strongest.

It has a nice plot, but becomes too annoying when you keep reading the same whining again and again and again and again.

Quite good I must say.

It's an action novel for sure but it's main focus is the mental growth of our broken protagonist who is suffering heavily from survivor's guilt. If you like more reading about psychologies of characters rather than pure action this one is good for you. Otherwise you might get bored. Take that advice seriously please. Because the amount of dialogue in a death battle is huge in this one though the author manages to make it mostly about the main character. Even at times I was quite... more>> suprised. I thought why would this guy is helping the emotional growth of our protagonist when he's battling to death with him? So it's a novel where most people are psychologists (including some enemies) and MC is the patient. I didn't dislike it though. His progress is slow but he's getting there at a realistic speed. Not like a battle manga where he crosses sword with some wise guy once and understands the meaning of life.

Also side characters are not so bad but I especially like his friends from his past life. <<less

The pacing is badly rushed, and as a result of this : characters don't have much time to be characterized despite there being many opportunities for the author to do so; progress of the story is not satisfying due to lack of setups, resulting in almost anti-climatic moments.

Dialogues are weak and almost redundant—almost every conversations in the story have "I'm the tr*sh prince so blah blah blah" in it. It also feels 'robotic'.

TL;DR—Not great; Greatly bad.

Nah, the tittle gave some weight, while the content just absurd. I don’t know whether the translation could bring the story into life or the story just that bad in the original. I mean it has a plot, it has a storyline, it has half-originality, it has characters, but when everything put together in this novel they kinda gave me bad taste here and there. Like a chef with many good ingredients but the end result is a plate of charcoal. Or perhaps this kind of plate is a good... more>> taste these days?

Whether the writer or translator needs a professional editor, this story may comes out as a good light novel. <<less

this is so over the top edgy to the point that I can't really hate it for it, it's just silly by now, like looking at the weird melodramatic fantasies one had as a 14.y.o. Teen.

The author should write j-dramas or smt.

I liked that one fight tho, but this is in the category of "so bad it's good"

I really enjoy this series. The translation is great, as well as the pacing, which makes it even more enjoyable. All the characters I've seen so far seem reasonable in their actions and thought processes.

But the thing that I enjoy most are the sad undertones. I love how his past life actually affects his personality and character, making him the way he is now.

On the website, I saw some comments on how they think that the story is rushed, or the characters seem to trusting of MC being strong and... more>> other such things, but I think that's because they don't show much of his life before. I mean, he could have given small hints or something about his real power?

Edit: Yeah, actually, it's sort of edgy... to be honest, the idea isn't bad, but the way it's executed is pretty bad... <<less

I dont really understand all the hate ppl giving this one. It became one of my favourites the moment I started reading. MC is not your usual mr. Nice guy, forming a harem. He lived in hell, reached it's pinnacle and died because he had noone and nothing to live for. He wanted to reunite with those who were close to him but died along the way to their goal. And instead of it he got reincarnated as a prince. His feelings are rather complex. He has a survival syndrome... more>>
Spoiler

most of his team died while saving him

[collapse]
. For this reason he wants to be punished, tormented. He despices the sword for various reasons, but its literally a part of him. He is used to live in a world, where survival in itself was a win, but now he lives in a relatively peaceful world and as a prince nothing threatens him.

Most contradictions you find in his actions can be solved by a simple thought: he didn't want to be reincarnated. Most of reincarnation novel MCs dont mind to be reincarnated. Mostly they are happy actually. They see it as a second chance, as a gift, but this MC sees it as a failure. So he basically lives in his memories, which explains all the flashbscks. He's like an old soldier who spent all his life fighting wars and doesnt know what to do in peaceful times. He has strong principles, his own code of honor, created in that world of war which cant be understood by people who didnt live there. He isnt fit for this peaceful world. But he enjoys it. So hejust wants to live without doing anything, spending his days inleasure, waiting for the day he dies and finally meets his friends. Yeah it all sounds cotradictionary, but if you think about his circumstances it kinda makes sence.

Spoiler

Someone in the comments didnt like his answer to the princess about becoming a beast like him, but remebering his background, his former world and how his life ended it perfectly made sence to me. Even more, it was the most obvious answer. She didnt need the power, he had, in this world. And the price of this power is to big for her.

[collapse]
.

To bad it was dropped at 5 volumes and only 4 of them translated. I honestly wanted to read it till the end and see him become happy eventually. <<less

2/5, misrated.

I read a review that said considering this is a light novel, you need to understand the slow pacing is inherently in the formula.

This convinced me to read another volume or 2 of it but seriously, slow pacing isn't what makes this an unbearable read, it's the inescapable flashbacks that are literally in every chapter. It's one thing to have some world/character building in the form of flashbacks but no that's not what we get.

... more>> Instead we literally keep getting some character (some irrelevant) repeating something along the lines of;

"you're weak, "

"let me protect you since you're weak, "

"don't be like me, become stronger, " etc etc.

I get it, I got it the first 30 iterations of that of those flashbacks and frankly you're allowed to have some repetition to ingrain how the main character's past experiences were, but it's volume 4 now and nothing has really changed and it doesn't seem like it will. Plot has moved forward, flashbacks have cleared up some mysteries, character identities have been revealed but still it cannot escape the same classic repetitive self loathing BS.

If you're going to read this novel you need understand that 50% of the time in the literal sense, it'll take place in flashbacks and that those flashbacks won't really be anything beyond dialogue that from the main characters point of view, is just a way of himself reminding himself how weak, powerless and full of regret he is (I'm sure other readers can find more depth to them).

-As my first review of a series even though I've read quite a few and dropped even more, I think what really prompted me to write is my personal regret of not having dropped it earlier than I have. <<less

I dont know why but, I am crying when I read this series. What I seek from story is not strong or OP MC but Noble MC that just love people without asking anything in return. This series gives us a story about the reincarnation of MC who is tired of fighting but because of the promise, he holds the sword again to protect the thing he loves in his second life. What a noble and pitiable MC, that fighting to seek place to die and to life without any... more>> regret.

Spoiler

When MC say "One Slash, One Kill. My heart and My Mind is always in the Battlefield"

That line make me goosbump

And when he say

"If I can die without regrets, maybe I can finally meet you all again"

That line make me cry

[collapse]

The writing technique of the author which balances the way of thinking, regrets and memories of MC coupled with the words that are issued is truly a masterpiece. I dont know why the review so bad, but I love MC that have badass and noble personality and I hope this series end with a happy ending <<less

I read the early chapters, and I don't like the style of writing, either due to bad translation or author just really bad at it.

It felt sick to read an edge lord (MC) that's on whining rampage, constantly remind reader and others he's on edge and a great mystery of his past blah blah blah. I get it, you are on edge because of past and suffering for it, but we (reader) do not need to be remind every chapter.

Honestly, the premise was interesting so I started to read but it slowly got predictably boring.

I do like the protagonist's sword but other than that there was nothing that interested me.

The protagonist's past life seems interesting. I'd much rather read a story about his past life than this mediocre thing.

... more>> The MC and cast are so carbon cardboard cut outs that I can't connect or invest myself in them and the plot is slow due to the MC always remembering about his past life friends and being sad.

TLDR, not worth your time <<less

Passable, a pretty good read if you’re bored but it doesn’t really connect with you. Grammatical errors every few chapters, and is the author a chuuni? It gives me those vibes. The MC is too caught up with his past life, and specific situations are over dramatically drawn out to create his character.

Not really my kind of thing ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯

Nice story with some fresh plot.

Dropping because of monologues and because human can't change from cold blooded mu*derer to classic Jap MC. If you train simply good martial arts for a year your thinking process will change a bit. MC spend his live while killing and now he is a lazy guy? That's pathetic
