The novel is not as strong as Gong Xinwen's other works that I've read (Apocalypse Arrival, Let the Villain Go, Dandere General and His Lord).

Heroine Saves A Gentleman shares many of the same themes, settings, and types of characters as the aforementioned works, but I would strongly recommend them over this one.

Many people are mentioning the h*mophobia in this story which is in fact pretty overwhelming. I was able to ignore it because I came directly from the author's other work (Dandere General and His Lord) which also has overt... more>> themes of male-on-male s*xual violence. However, it became harder over time because while in that story it felt like the disapproval was toward r*pe and not homosexuality itself, in this story the characters are very clear in failing to distinguish homosexuality and r*pe, which is disappointing.

However, I ended up having to drop the story for a different reason. I enjoy Gong Xinwen's works in large part because of their sensitivity to women's issues, so when the male lead's best friend attempts to r*pe the main character and this is simply shrugged off because he is the male lead's friend, I was unpleasantly surprised. Furthermore, the main character starts sucking up to this best friend who threatened to kill her, insulted her in various misogynistic ways, and - I cannot emphasize this enough - tried to r*pe her. I see this plot point a lot in straight romance stories and I honestly can't stomach it, not to mention that it was all the more shocking coming from an author I expected better from.

Maybe I would have hung in there if the novel was otherwise outstanding, but the plot is very rushed, sloppy, and rather staid compared to the author's other works I've read. I would rather reread them than force myself to stomach an inferior and offensive version. 2/5. <<less

I have a few small gripe about the novel.

The translation isn't exactly right. Many time the spear got translated into gun or rifle, confusing the reader (me).

Then the Jin Dynasty enemy is the South Vietnam, when the Jin Dynasty don't even share the same border with Vietnam, which was Daiviet at the time, and instead was at war with Southern Song Dynasty.

Also the time travel thing really messed up and not well thought out at all.

I also don't like how they just ignore the original body.

Okay, this book didn't linger much in my head after I read it. I remember the plot decently but ultimately it was dragged out in some areas then super abrupt at the end. Like the last part of ML's journey was s*upid, like I understood why he did it but he never really had that ambition until he was pushed to it, and then achieved it too quickly. Like it should have been set up earlier instead of dragging out the villain's counterattack, so you could have had a better... more>> understanding for it.

Initially I liked the concept of modern girl put in the body of a mentally disabled martial art train servant girl, she's staffed by the villain's family and what do you know she ends up saving this soft scholar from their clutches. It kinda went down hill though. There was conflict set up that didn't seem to add anything or just went outside of logic. ML was kind, open and sometimes naive. I liked how forwarded and honest MC was, she's a simple character no scheming. It's just her awareness of things, like PTSD, could be kinda bad I'll be honest. She even tried to say she knew her stuff but no she did not! Her thoughts on his PTSD, it seemed almost homophobic? Saying it was trauma caused by it being a gay guy wanting ML instead of the whole actual being kidnapped, tortured & noncon bit. Like honey I don't think it being a straight dude or a girl would change that. If anything MC's roguish behavior later on, should trigger ML (because my God she is very forward and not shy at all especially in the last bits)

Spoiler

I also felt her going back to her world was a misstep, it gave her closure but why did it seem determine to develop something with the 2nd ML and it really just seemed like the author just wanted to have her in her original body that was scandal free/not weighed down by certain problems unlike the body she originally took over. I don't know if that was the intention but that's how it came off. And how casually they covered up how quickly ML's remarriage (yes still to her but outsiders don't know that), like from an outsider POV you see the guy who wholeheartedly loved this lower class girl, immediately jump into a marriage to random woman who acts like her. Also their ability to travel between the worlds, didn't care for it at all. The risk out weighes the benefits, and it just felt like a show off move for MC.

[collapse]

h*mophobia is bad but the author's "no homo" attitude led to some very funny lines. This line had me cracking up "the two young heteros*xual bodies were pressed in the foggy hot spring together, " like why did you have to write it like that other than to say Look at my very straight CP! No gays here... other than a villain of course 🙄 It came off so ridiculous. Another unintentionally funny moment was when MC said something like "he doesn't do a bit of foreplay but always keeps his hips moving" like that's such a weird flex that it's hilarious af. <<less

What I like about this novel is the characters, they have such a vivid personality and the interaction between them is just funny. Both FL and ML are lovable.

But the story itself is just alright. It started really strong with how FL was saving ML, but it kinda goes downhill steadily from there. Not sure if there will be a turning point in the story, but there is not much going on. Somehow you just get lost with the pacing/story because the resolution of each problem is not satisfying. It... more>> was too quick and too simple.

Spoiler

Like how ML was going to military. There is nothing leading up to this, and in a chapter or two, suddenly he came back as a war hero. Then in a chapter they suddenly got married. I think it would be more interesting if the story tell us more about it.

[collapse]

Conflict would get dragged on, but resolution was short and sudden. Because of this, it feels more like reading a summary rather than a story.

Translation comment:
Spoiler

Translation is quite alright, some things would be better with TL notes (like Lord Wu is the Fifth Lord or ML, but it wasn't explained. Also Lady (太太) that would be better to be called as Madam as to not get confused with the young lady (nth奶奶)). Sometimes pronoun got switched too like the first chapter, or some minor mistranslation. But considering this is historical, there are a lot of things that are quite difficult to translate so I think it's quite decent.

[collapse]

This novel is actually only 50 something chapters but was separated into 3 or so in the translation. So even though it's written as 152 chapters, it's a short story. Overall it's pretty fun following the characters but the storytelling is a bit too fast paced so it might get confusing.

Might not finish reading this novel, but we'll see. <<less

1 thing I like about this novel..

FL didn't transmigrate into 'TYPICAL-noble-young-lady' with the same 'TYPICAL' >abusive-family >lead to TYPICAL major face slapping 'party' > and then 'revenge' > TYPICAL Quick Level Up power & bla.. bla.. so on...

Only that I don't have enough & wish author could give us 'extra' chapters ^0^/

The ML is one of those elegant scholar types - not at all overbearing. The FL is assertive (in fact, she is more assertive than ML and ML always gives in to her), charming, and heroic. I really enjoy their dynamic. FL teases ML a lot, while the ML gives FL her freedom. I think this was a very fun read, because the FL was so unique. FL was straightforward and a risk-taker, not at all scheming or oblivious. I don't mind cunning/oblivious protagonists, but this was definitely a very... more>> welcome change of pace. The FL was smart and resourceful, but she never seemed all knowing. The way the ML treats the FL is also very heartwarming and cute. <<less

Noooo how did it just end like that? I need an explanation 😭 will they be going back and forth? No? 😩 Other than that I loved this book. The FL and ML, really some of the best characters ever. The respect they have for each other, the trust, the gentleness. They accept their partners for who they are, encouraging them, supporting them and neither are immature and reckless. Love them to bits.

i really want to steal our ML, really. But I’m terrified of MC, so I’ll just have to wish... more>> them a happy life 😌 <<less

Good so far, the MC and ML's role are sort a reverse. Instead of a strong ML weak get a weak, pretty one. Instead of a weak MC we get a strong one! LOL!!

This novel gets 5 stars from me simply due to the fact that both the female lead and male lead love each other, AND THE MALE LEAD WILL FIGHT FOR THEIR LOVE even if others disapprove! After reading so many novels where a male character gives up on a girl because of family/political pressures, this was a breath of fresh air. I love the female leads practicality at the beginning and eventual softening to acknowledge her love for the ML.

In summary, a really great refreshing read with two main characters... more>> who treat each other sincerely and will fight for each other. The gentleness of the male lead is a standout - WE WANT MORE GENTLE ML! Minimal dog's blood angst compared to SO many novels out there. <<less

I liked this so much I read it all in one go. I almost didn't because of the bad reviews, but now after finishing it I feel like they were really dishonest.

Probably the best novel of its kind I ever read.

Just to clarify some complains I've seen in other reviews (not spoilers, these things appear very early on) : there is no "original soul", the two souls combine/unite to form one. So for whomever was crying "but why did no one think of the poor original soul", you just... more>> didn't read carefully.

Same with the insta love. They spend a long time on the road, even though we don't see every tiny detail from their day to day life.

I even enjoyed the part after they got married just as much as the other half. I like reading about established relationships and the plot could veer off into a more political and interesting direction. <<less

I was actually very disappointed with this novel. The early part of the novel up to when the female lead went to the capital, was actually very entertaining. I could tell the novel has potential to go far but as I was enjoying the read, it was ruined by the latter half of the novel.

When she was at the capital, the plot line became a bit rush. Everything became dull, there was nothing entertaining. The writing changed from hereon. When the male lead was in comma due to poisoning, it... more>> was solved TOO easily. I definitely didn't think the writer would write something like "power of love could save everything" here. Imagine how disappointed I was.

I was imagining some tension, perhaps, the female lead would embark a journey to find herbs or something that could help him, but, no. All I could say, again, the latter half was too much of a rush and the translation starting from here was a bit off as well.

I couldn't tell who is who, very confusing with their title. It is definitely an incorrect translation. Read up to the part when they were in the capital and you will realize what I am talking about. This is just wholly my opinion. I am a literature student and the latter half of the novel irks me so much. <<less

So refreshing to read this story that give's you some feeling of satisfaction. It's hard to find a story like this now. MC is strong independent woman who got transmigated. I like how she depends on her own strenght, no drama and sh*t like that. ML is lovable damsel in distress.. Even if he gets kidnapped a lot of times, it doesn't matter because he's the type of ML so different from other bastard perveted ML on other stories.

At about chapter 100 the book got extremely contrived. Plot was all but pathetic. Everyone knows how to solve the problem as soon as it shows up but the extremely dense MC can't figure it out for 50 chapters. Random people jump out to cause problems that the author tries really hard to force into the plot. But essentially its all just word vomit to fill up their quota of words and chapters.

I am mentally screaming because I just got caught up and its at a cliff hanger. This romance is fantastic, and while a few of the plot points were just too convenient (namely the pre-cursor to their marriage), I fcking love everything else about this. Interesting characters (supporting characters included), good writing/translation and an amazing protagonist. Love it.

i didn't rate it because it doesn't deserve 3 stars while giving it 2 is a bit overboard.

i only have 2 words for this novel, plain and boring.

from the very beginning there was really nothing much going on but I held on hoping it would get better and better, unfortunately things just keep going downhill. the characters are all very lacking and everything is extremely rushed.

IMHO I dont like the MC- AT ALL. she reminds me of those s*upid transmigrated females who take actions without thinking of consequences and troubling... more>> people around her... this for me is a big no no. <<less

This is sweet novel. I recommend it to those who are boring of reading those novels about overbearing male leads and arrogant female leads that think they know everything because they're a transmigrated person.

I really enjoy this story but I agree with other reviewers that the ending was very disappointing. There's so many loose ends and things left unexplained, for example:

Spoiler
  • MC and ML suddenly went back to the modern times by chance and there's no explanation whether it's temporary or not or whether they're be able to go back to ancient era again or not. If they couldn't go back to ancient era, what about their loved ones there? No matter what, ML wasn't an ordinary person. He was a marquess and the crown prince's right hand. He also had a loving family and friends so for them to disappear without saying goodbye, it must cause an uproar and when their loved ones couldn't find them, they would be sad for a long time.
  • What about ML's identity in the modern world? Modern world was different from ancient era. You couldn't just pop out of nowhere and lived there without any identity. He also didn't have any family and a job so it's rather surprising that MC's family could readily accept him and let MC marry him.
  • What about the grand princess? Did she really die or just go back to modern times?
[collapse]

I really hope that the author would add several extras to tie the loose ends but since this novel was already released a long time ago, I think the chances were a bit small so I could only leave all that to my imagination. <<less

I really like this story. It is different from other transmigration novel that I read so far.

No unecessary drama and MC has a really realistic view regarding love and life. If men did not want you, then you can search someone else! No need to be sad~ there's plenty of fish in the sea!!!

But I gave this novel 4 star because of the resolution towards the end is really fast! It seems like the author really want to end this novel as quick as possible sooo there's a lot of... more>> plot hole in the story

Overall it is a great distraction for you who's upset after reading dog blood novel <<less

There's blatant h*mophobia with wording, villains being cut sleeve and men liking men being potrayed as something that is disgusting and traumatizing. Sure s*xual assault can't be excused for any case but the blantant disgust for homosexuality is just wtf. They don't put emphasis on it being a s*xual assault, but it being 'gay' is disgusting like man???

I'm surprised this isn't mentioned much by other reviewers as a very questionable aspect of the novel lol. Anyways other than that the FL is unnecessarily OP n seems to be very perfect... more>> in everything and anything. Also I expected her to be valiant n ML to be like the opposite and them taking reverse gender roles (as implied by synopsis). However the novel turns out to be a normal Mary Sue ish novel with a standard plotline. Idk it's just disappointing for the most part. <<less

I'm surprised I rated this four.

It's actually a good story, fluff, and the couple's relationship is cute. I love MC's strong personality and ML doting person. But, I felt Bland. Like their relationship sure had these obstacles, but I felt it resolves too quickly? Idk I felt there's something missing, I'm not sure why. Yeah, that's why I rated this four. It's a light read.
