Is it Tough Being a Friend?

I’ve encountered my ideal protagonist!

It’s my friend, Hinomori Ryuuga. We’ve become the closest of friends after entering high school.

My first impression of Ryuuga was “This is the kind of protagonist you’d see in something like an anime.” Then, that thought soon changed into conviction.

First of all, this guy almost never talks about his past. Also, he frequently slips out of class. As soon as he comes back, he gets extremely tired, blood comes out from his lips, the sleeves and cuffs of his uniform get torn, and so forth.

Furthermore, there’s always beauties that are surrounding Ryuuga. The one who’s like an idol within the school, Yukimiya Shiori. The cool expert of the sword, Aogasaki Rei. The mysterious transfer student, Elmira McCartney. It’s very tiring for me when these people appear in front of Ryuuga. I have to frantically make a fuss by saying things like “H, hey Ryuga! How did you get acquainted with Yukimiya!”, “W, why did the beautiful swordswoman Aogasaki come to the classroom to specifically meet Ryuga?!”, or “E, E, Elmira! What is it that you see in Ryuga!”

…So why am I doing this? That’s because I, Kobayashi Ichirou, am a pro at being a friend.

My life’s calling is to support Hinomori Ryuuga, the protagonist amongst protagonists, as a close friend character.

―Let the curtains open for the rom-com presented by co-starring best friend, Kobayashi Ichirou!

So first and foremost, the protagonist is damaged in the head. Instead of being s*upidly oblivious to girls he has a drive to stay a support character to straight up insane levels. This matters more to him than women or anything else, he is willing to die for it. Which rotates being maddening and funny.

Spoiler

I would argue that drive is why his life-force is strong enough to easily support being a vessel for two evil gods at once.

[collapse]

Many times the plot or issues would have been handled 10x faster if he dropped the "story plots" he's always trying to setup where he stays on the sidelines and supposedly "doesn't know anything".

Spoiler

It only truly starts becoming maddening in volume 6 and 7 when things get more serious imo.

[collapse]

The NTR isn't really a thing unless you're truly so sensitive that you can't stand the MC tolerating someone else liking your ship while she is obviously only into him.

My only true complaint with the story is that several times he grows as a person and realizes that he needs to step up and stop treating people as characters. And than 2 chapters later he freaking reverts back. <<less

As of v6c6 comedy became much worse plot gets more and more drama pieces, MC is real MN not a side char etc. So what I want to say first volumes are amazing but novel degradates amazingly fast.

To be frank adding drama was probably the worst choise. Not even adding, more like replacing comedy with drama - major disappointment. It's like a creamy sweet cake topper with ketchup and steak

This novel started out being very interesting to me however, volume 2 was just uninteresting.

it feels like the author planned out to volume 1.5 but ended up rushing the rest. It feels subpar and boring and Jesus they just start tossing characters around to the point that the harem is a. Too big and b. Not believable. Not like most harems are but this one just doesn’t work at all.

Dropped this. I quite enjoyed the first 3 volumes even if it got gradually more chaotic, I felt confident I would read all the tranlsated chaptes (up to volume 6) without any issues. It's a s*upid novel, but it wasn't that bad of a read, it was actually somewhat amusing at times, in other words, a good waste of time, which is really what most of us are looking for as it's hard to find more true gems after reading so much of what is available.

I was amply warned about... more>> the flaws of the first few volumes and was prepared to face them, which is perhaps why it didn't really bother me. The borderline NTR, which really isn't NTR but more like the author telling jokes about this evil spirit with the same appearance as the MC ending up on "dates" with the women around him or trying to chase the "main heroine" if we can call her that. Never crosses levels of holding hands and the guy is really only interested in one of them who has already put her guard up against him. I don't feel like it's anything to be worried about even if it did rub me the wrong way every now and then. It wasn't really an issue, some people just hate the very idea or possibility too much, but go in knowing it will happe and it's not a big deal.

Then there are the parts about how it deviates from the original concept quickly and becomes very chaotic. I agree on this, it would've been better if the author managed to keep to the original setting, from a "friend" setting, the protagonist quickly goes to the "love interest" of pretty much every female in the story and a very powerful guy who might have even more mysteries to him than what was explained by volume 4, some things are hinting at that. That's fine too, though. I do like overpowered protagonists and I didn't mind the more rom-com focused setting as I was also expecting that. I found it pretty decent and fun to read, I didn't have the expectations that it wouldn't devolve into a chaotic mess. But I honestly felt myself wishing that the MC could stop whining about being a friend all the time and wanting to break off the more lover-like relationship but failing to do so because he's simply too kind and can't take any drastic measures. It feels unnecessary and overdone. It's fine at first but after seeing him whining consistently and trying to stay as a "mob" type character for many chapters, it starts grating on your nerves, making you wish he'd just accept his current situation and make the best of it by changing his goals. After all, can't a boyfriend-type character also be a good supporting character on the sidelines? There are ways to solve it but he seems to refuse anything but going back to the old "friend" setting. His acting also feels a bit half-assed, at the start the exaggeration and attempt to act as a pe*verted friend type character was somewhat off-putting, later on he has no real special characteristics anymore, he just tends to screw himself over all the time because he tries to make things more "dramatic" and trying to steer a situation he has no control over...

So, while it certainly had quite a few flaws, I did enjoy it enough to read without feeling that I wanted to drop it or finish all the chapters already which tends to happen while reading boring novels. But that changed rapidly at volume 4. The novel hit me in the face with an unexpected development I absolutely abhor and wasn't prepared for at all.

Spoiler

A child of an apostle of hell and a guy from earth is introduced. One of the girls disappears claiming to have sided with the apostles and then, after having to read about the mc's s*upid homework situation which one couldn't care less about, the MC finds her and it turns out that she pretty much adopted that toddler which was left behind after its parents died and now apostles are trying to kidnap it. The girl in question suddenly shows motherly attributes and acts as a protective mother to the kid for no good reason, her personality was never even close to that before, but now she sees herself as a "mother", it's creepy and I hate crap like that. It made me cringe way too hard.

Then other girls of the story start acting motherly as well and their supposed desire to get a child intensifies more than ever before and the author introduces various situations where it's shown, like some lady walking by with a child and the girl going "oh sooo cuuuuute" and "I want to become a mother too" "what do you want to name our children" etc. I abhor the thought of how it will continue to intensify as all the girls take care of the mongrel toddler. Sorry, but I dislike kids and I don't want to ever become a father, for me, kids are a huge minus and "motherly" traits is a big turn off unless it's just about them being more caring and loving towards the protagonist himself, it made me dislike all of the girls, thanks author. Only in special situations are kids welcome and it'd have to either not be that relevant to the story (like the kid of someone else that just shows up for a chapter or two) or already grown up and matured enough to be bearable instead of a whiny, snotty annoying brat, like myuu from arifureta who is quite honestly adoarable, but she's already able to talk and way more mature than her peers because of her experiences. Toddlers are only welcome for the last chapter. It's such a big turn off and annoyance that I have to drop it because of that, the author took it too far, not only introducing the toddler but changing the heroines' personalities when close to it and putting too much focus about children. It's not as if it was the only flaw either, so perhaps we could say it became the straw that broke the camel's back instead of being the sole reason for me dropping it.

By the way, the MC always refuses to accept any of the females' advances, even the more proactive ones, it pisses me off when girls throw themselves at the MC nude but he just acts as if it's a huge bother and refuses to do anything, s*x is always made out to be so special that you can't do with anyone but the one you marry, but I feel it's honestly s*upid how they can't have some s*x for fun and if the author doesn't want that, he shouldn't make girls actively getting in the mc's bed naked while literally asking him to sleep with them. Keep it at both sides being too shy or "not ready" if you want to avoid s*x and "perverse" stuff, making the girl get nude and repeatedly asking for the mc's meat rod just makes the MC seem impotent and pathetic for refusing all the time...

[collapse]

It's essentially a vastly inferior version of "to be a power in the shadows", which can't even be compared to it. The guy in "to be a power in the shadows" has no moral restraints nor any restraints whatsoever, he'll do ANYTHING for his goals and to act as a power in the shadows. He stays true to his goals even if it means selectively ignoring everything happening. He puts all of his power into acting and fitting into his chosen role, going to extreme extents for his role to the point of making it a reality, never complaining. He's an amazing character and the story is full of life and hilarity. But this "is it tough being a friend" novel is just too inferior, the MC can't fulfill his goals whatsoever, he's worthless and just complains while being bound by his morals to the point where he can't do anything even slightly "evil" to the girls even if the situation calls for it. His desire to stay as a worthless side character also becomes a bit frustrating.

This might be readable, but if you want a truly good novel, go for "to be a power in the shadows". It's superior in every way. The author of this novel simply won't stop putting in one land mine after another, at some point he'll scare away almost every reader. <<less

so cleared 2 volumes at light speed and my thoughts on this are three:

It is a trope parade breaker, guy pretends to be a pe*vert but seems to have an existential block that prevents him from ever going the distance. Usually you get dense, he is fairly observant and aware of the others feelings, or super pe*vert he is pe*verted for cosplay but not to a high degree.

second, he is aware of the tropes honestly he reminds me of Deadpool a little, he semi-breaks or fully breaks fourth wall when... more>> he monologues. He also is human and superhuman, he has a lot of s*upid skills he still doesn’t realize he is MC level OP.

Third sometimes the story gets weird and too crazy that the development of characters is too stalled or shallow, the cast is already up to 8 heroine candidates at volume 2 with the author trying to point them all at the MC he gives them each events so development is fairly shallow or forced (against the MCs will) down his throat. While I’m all for harem stories every now and then the development between MC and the main are rather ridiculous at times and his quest for normalcy is at time approaching disbelief if not for his existential worldview that he is a side character

Well pretty sure I butchered this somewhere but whatever, this is a fairly interesting story that can definitely kill time and parodizes the standard shonen harem story <<less

I had fun reading this novel, although sadly there is not enough material to read and properly judge it (at least translated material).

I was able to enjoy myself and have a couple of laughters along, but sadly after volume 1, the story seems to be getting messy, I can't see the direction is taking.

Spoiler

At the beginning the MC was supposed to be an "extra", a mob character, someone to support the "protagonist" Ryuuga. But now he is becoming the "protagonist" of the story, and although I have not problem with that, for me it seems too quick and boring how he became OP

[collapse]

Although if we ignore the "story", and how generic the characters are, it is still a fun reading.

Characters - 2/5

there is nothing special about any of the characters, they are predictable and I have yet to see any "growth", they are two-dimensional. They are characters you would see of your average romcon.

Plot - 2.5/5

Just like the characters, the plot is pretty much generic, the only difference is that we see it from the perspective of a "side" character which makes it a bit more interesting.

Protagonist - 3.5/5

The protagonist of this novel is what makes it fun and enjoyable. His inner monologues along with the way he acts with the characters is pretty funny. Although he is not completely original, he is still better than a two-dimensional characters.

My only problem with him is that we have yet to see his "true" self, after all, he created a persona to go along with the "story". Sometimes we see him getting out of character and maybe showing the true him, but he has yet to totally discard that persona.

Romance - 2/5

not much to say about this, is pretty average.

Comedy - 3/5

Like I said before, the MC is what makes this story fun to read.

Well, that's it for now, it saddens me that the translator stopped working on this novel but I comprehend.

Hopefully he or anyone else might pick it up later, so I can see how the story progress and might be able to give it a more accurate "review". <<less

Premise of the story is good. Volume 1 had good potential. The Main Character (the side character-MC) was actually a likeable oddball but is still proactive enough to do his own shit. Then comes in the volumes that comes after it, which just makes the whole novel goes to shit. MC has no problems or sense of security letting his evil spirit counterpart flirt with his girlfriend. He's also very passive with the problems of the other girls, literally having to wait for the OTHER GIRLS to help each other... more>> out before the MC does any kind of help (the girlfriend-hero acts more like a man than the MC). He's literally delusional, not the good kind of delusional but the kind that will make you facepalm and cringe. The 2 star is for the good concept that the first volume has, which then gets butchered badly like a fish handled by an inexperienced fishmonger in the next volume. <<less

It's great. If you've read a lot of stereotype harem stories or just 'Shounen battle' stuff, and if you recognize everything that happens in them that you can already predict what happens in the story. This is definitely a novel you should read. Well, considering you have a sense of humour. There are a lot of comments about NTR, though I don't get why and I don't see that happening in the story in the future. Also it's amazing on how many the characters are but are still memorable, especially... more>> the introduction of many new characters in volume 6.

If you habe read a lot of stories or manga, you will definitely recognuze the things that Kobayashi Ichirou is saying. The usual tropes and stuff you find in usual the usual stuff.

When reading this story you should always remember that, Hinomori Ryuuga is the protagonist in the 'story's universe'. But the story is narrated through the perspective of Kobayashi Ichirou, which makes Ichirou the protagonist of this novel.
Spoiler

Reading the comments, maybe peolple expected this nobel to be more of the stereotype Harem novels? Or maybe just no sense of humour for a variety of jokes?

Spoiler

The story started off quite good. It has some potential in my opinion. But it all crashed down because of MC's obsession in becoming "Friend" character. Not to mention that he's seeing everything in the world as some kind of theater where everyone has some kind of designated role. Dude basically got confessed and what he thought was similar to "Now I need to do this boyfriend role". It's irritating seeing that happening. It feels like he doesn't have any human feelings. Just be normal human. And lastly the MC's obsession in becoming just as "Friend" character even though he basically has a GF now was being thrown around quite often even in the volume 1. That can really grate your nerves.

Some people might like the MC's obsession, some might not. I'd say this novel really isn't for everyone. <<less

I have no problem with the series. It has a funny premise that toys with LN tropes in an amusing way. That being said, the author has a problem of trying too hard to make jokes, killing the interesting aspects of the plot in the process. Examples:

Spoiler

I get that taotie is a comic relief character. His problem is that he shouldn't be the comic relief character in this kind of novel. The funny aspect of the character trying to be the stereotypical "friend character" in this novel and failing miserably is destroyed by tao tie: he overshadows kobayashi and does everything a main character would do. That makes him looks like an actual very pathetic character, thus ACHIEVING his objectives.

People think this a NTR precisely because of that: if kobayashi wasn't trying too hard to be overshadowed by others taotie would be a comic relief. In this case he does not good at the story premise and funny events it sets up

Another aspect is the logic of the story. Some funny gags breaking the internal logic of the story are funny because they ADDRESS the logic, meaning the author is aware and is just making a joke about it. But others like Ichirou running from one date to another with no reason an just making himself miserable instead of helping his girlfriens IS annoying. It's established that kobayashi is actually a caring person, that's why he fails at being a friend character, but somehow he's heartless towards his girlfriend and leaves her alone. I find that strange and breaks his character.

His other gag in which the 2 spirits inside ichirou start quarreling just before a fight is also annoying. It makes no sense because ichirou has summoned both at the same time before, and also because he supposedly can just command them. They can't go against him

[collapse]

Anyway, I would like this novel more If the author would have a little more restrain in his gags. Sometimes they're insufferable when they break the story, and that it's not funny. <<less

The premise is new and alluring however, it comes with a sad realization that it was all just to set up a run-of-the-mill rom-com. The story given by the synopsis is distressingly misleading as other reviews suggest and even worse is that it also abandons the story teased in the synopsis with haste. Despite reading the other reviews I had hope that there would be more substance within the first volume but it didn't really do anything justice nor did it allow us to transition from our expectation to the... more>> actual harem rom-com in a gentle manner.

The novel itself is average, even in the first novel; the writing barely brings about any joy or humor to the reader. I'm sure you could actually take his desire to be a mob character and the novel would barely change. The main reason for this critique is that the MC despite his wishes to be a mob character doesn't actively try to regain his past status. In short the author doesn't really mame the MC try to stay true to his character other than him prattling on and on about his mob chara status.
Spoiler

He could have told the hero that he didn't want to date her so many times however despite him monologuing about his wishes he never interjects/clear up the misunderstandings. Despite his understanding that he's raising flags and that his actions can be understood as cheating when the truth comes out he keeps letting misunderstandings build up. What frustrates me the most is that he could have went on with his amnesia plans so many times but in the end it was all just to monologue his desires of remaining a supporting character.

[collapse]

Just about the same level of unsatisfying/unfulfilled from an overused genre that you normally get. Well it gets a 3 from me due to the amazing bait and the novel not really making me have any strong feelings for it. <<less

Like the addition of Taotie, I know he's been added for 'comedic relief', but honestly, he f*cking ruins this novel for me. I didn't mind the twist, but even considering that this is a gag novel, it's just messy and all over the place.

Characterization is weak - the heroines are generic types; plus there's nothing unique about their behaviour or how they talk. They're a bore.

So are the romcom situations the MC gets caught up in. They should be the main content but instead they're bite sized summaries and the author is more interested in writing about how meta-aware the MC is and how he plots his way around the story.

MC is... more>> ridiculously hellbent on sticking to his role according to tropes..... which might sound great but since this novel is messily and generically written, it's just not funny or entertaining enough.

I mean:

Spoiler

How can a hero-type girl forced to live as a boy, who relieves her stress by being as girly as possible in her private time with the MC, often by doing erot*c cosplay parades for him; make me want to yawn as I'm reading it?

By the way, the novel cover already hinted strongly that Ryuuga was actually a girl; and of course the way 'he' was barely fleshed out as a character before 'his' unveiling made it obvious that Ryuuga was a generic harem member.

I would say this story is very typical, that initially confused people into thinking it was going to be something unique. The non-protagonist that was inevitably going to be the protagonist is a very common theme in Japanese harem stories. The method they use to get there may differ, but at the end of the day this is still basically teen reader bait. I would agree with people that if the novel had continued the theme of the protagonist helping from the support role and creating wonky events that way,... more>> this novel would have been quite unique and enjoyable in it's own right. It's unfortunate; I suspect the author was taking cues from every other power tripping harem comedy novel rather than attempting to create something unexpected, likely out of fear it would flop perhaps. If you're looking for a Mob Protagonist story in it's truest sense, this isn't it. But it almost was.

Also, the supposed NTR people are talking about is vastly overreacted and doesn't even come close to a 1.0 scale of relevance to the story, just another mask similar to how this novel started to distract you from what this novel is really about, the same old story most people would have read many times by now. <<less

The story is about an MC that is fairly delusional. He believes that life is a story and everyone has their own "parts" to play in it. At first he believed himself to be the protagonist and that he would become someone with superpowers that would save the day. But for some reason because of being chosen not as the hero during a school play but as a lizard that died in the play he started to believe that he was just some side character with no real worth. That... more>> was until he started highschool and met someone he truly believed was the true protagonist and thus he decided that the best role he could play was as a supporting character thats the best friend of the protagonist.

So from there the story goes on and on with the MC trying to hold on to this new role in life while helping the "true" MC as best he can. Problem is that the protagonist who he's been trying to setup with a harem turns out to be a girl who's somehow become deeply in love with him at the same time it turns out he isn't so weak and normal as he once thought. Then in a fairly fun way the story goes on from this and has the MC try and reestablish himself as the best friend instead of the boyfriend/husband part the protagonist is pushing for.

Like many of these stories the premise is pretty fresh and funny but with no real development except adding in more and more girls that are in love with the MC while he grows further and further away from being a mob character into becoming the last boss / hidden boss character it becomes a bit annoying to read and hope for character development only for the MC to regress, which makes one think that the author is only doing this to drag on and milk the story for all it's worth.

Overall I'd say reading the first 2-3 volumes puts the story as a 4-5/5 stars while reading onwards lowers it to a 3/5. I'll rate it as a 5 however just because I had some laughs early on and I believe there are too many low votes. <<less

This novel promises and then fails to deliver.

The premise set up is that the MC is a regular dude that's supporting the "Protagonist" but that's dropped within the first volume and the story shifts to boring garbage.

Spoiler

As some others have said, NTR-lite, the MC gets a clone inhabited by an pedophilic evil spirit with a fetish for the MC's girlfriend. Speaking of which, the MC has a girlfriend that wants to marry him but all he talks about is that he hates being a boyfriend because he's supposed to be a "Friend Character". It's a copout for the MC to be a Harem protagonist while also being in a relationship and paying lip service to the original concept of the novel.

Its a fun novel, not masterpiece of any sort but it still follows a solid novel structure. If you can handle and not be bored of the japanese style of comedy then great. The story leans more towards an SoL and comedic tone and is mostly light hearted but since we got the good old supernatural good vs evil kind of story we get a teeny bit of serious moments. The story actually reminds me of Hataraku Maou-sama. Its worth a read if you like series like that.

But there's a bit of these stories, now, so you can pretty much expect the usual; but still, this one is plenty amusing.

Basic premise: a supremely genre-savvy character caught in their own prejudices, trying to keep a story on track that just isn't going to happen, Ichirou. Some self-aware harem hijinx ensue, but as a parody it's pretty much fast-forwarded.

Not bad.
